QUOTE (beautox @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 01:28 PM) Serious Question: If Carl Crawford could be had for Tyler Flowers Jordan Danks John Ely and Nevin Griffith, with a 48 hour window to negoiate an extension would you pull the trigger? Crawford is 28 and for the season he is putting up this line .313/.370/.462 .832 for his career .295/.334/.438 .772 over the past 3 years batting lead off .252/.323/.357 .680 batting in the #2 hole .311/.348/.470 .818 for comparisons sake Rios over the same span in the same spot in the line up Rios batting lead off .280/.336/.488 .824, Rios in the #2 hole .367/.393/.670 1.063 and for good measure batting third in the order .293/.351/.460 .811 Way too much considering we could just go after him as a FA the next year. Should be interesting to see what the Rays decide to do.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 12, 2009 -> 01:05 PM) Unless he's converting to WR or RB, we dont have a spot for him. He wont want to be a backup. Imagine the wildcat formation with Vick. Double reverse with Vick and Hester. Man that'd be sweet -

"I say deal J. Thome. Sure he hits some home runs, but Rios can do better overall than Thome. " Why the f*** do people post things on the internet when they know absolutely nothing? I just picture drugged up monkeys mindlessly mashing on a keyboard with 95% of "comments" on stories.

Hasn't Rios led off?

QUOTE (Pumpkin Escobar @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 04:09 PM) I feel like this may actually be his best move. He took a vastly overrated prospect who developed into a worthless player with power and dealt him for a flame-throwing lefty. Borchard is a a bust and was one when we dealt him and Thornton is one of the best setup men in the game. My favorite move though I feel like is going to be this Rios one. I've always bashed him in the fantasy baseball world for getting praise of 30-30 and being ranked top 40 for it before the season but I've always liked his game. I find it funny anytime the Sox get a guy they magically are just an average guy with no excitement about the upside to these writers and such. Lord knows if Boston, or NY, or the Cubs claimed him this guy would not only be proclaimed a 5-tool 30/30 guy. He'd be a 7-tool 40-40 potential guy who plays gold glove defense. Danks and Floyd I am always still torn on. If Quentin could stay healthy and prove last season wasn't a fluke - his is a great one. The list goes on but I just have a gut feeling about Rios. You can't hit like TCQ did last year and be a fluke (since they test for roids now, anyway) And Thorton was considered a failure of sorts too in Seattle, so at the time it was just a failed pick for a failed pick. Really all his moves have either been awesome or just neutral. The Swisher move sucked, but is anyone dying for any of those 3 guys back? -Floyd/Danks -TCQ -Dye/AJ/Iguchi/Pods and a ring -Rios/Peavy hopefully.

QUOTE (suicidesqueeze @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 03:24 PM) It's not his first year at the position. The Sox have been telling anyone who will listen that SS is his natural position. Doesn't look like it to me, he was better at 2nd last year. "First professional season" is correct.

QUOTE (beck72 @ Aug 11, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) I pick "C", he keeps the IF as is, signs Pods to a deal for LF, has Rios for CF, Q for LF, and has either Thome or Dye as DH. We're gonna have 2 LF?

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 08:12 PM) My beef? I have no beef. I just don't think he's the savior everyone here thinks he is. He's a nice player, not a $60 million player. Thats the thing though, he was a 60 million dollar player when he signed the contract (as guys like Hunter). It doesn't make him less of a player, just means he signed at a time when there was more money around. And again, we're not the Marlins, this doesn't bankrupt or even risk bankrupting the team.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) I was asking what he would get after this season if he was a FA. Hunter and GM Jr. were signed in different economic times. But why does that matter? We couldn't have signed him for less in the off season. We also could be stuck with Fukedome or Hunter for the same money. Its not like our payroll is 40 million, we still have money left even after Peavy/Rios additions.
-
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 07:57 PM) Alex Rios > Tori Hunter > GMJr Hunter $18M through 2012 GMJr $11M in 2010, $12M in 2011 Rios $9.7M in 2010, $12M 2011-12, $12.5M in 2013-14, $13.5M club option ($1M buyout) in 2015 So yeah, we win and f*** THE ANGELS Jesus, what in the holy f*** were they thinking with GM Jr? That dude made one catch and is set for life

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 07:55 PM) I hope so, they are committing more money to him than they gave Mark Buerhle. Rios plays 162 games per season, he should be making more than a pitcher
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 07:45 PM) Ibanez got 3 years $31 million. In fact, Manny and Texiera were the only non pitchers to get more than $31 million. Rios is owed $60 million. He's got himself a good deal. He's not the hitter Ibanez is. Bradley - 3/30 QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 07:45 PM) Ibanez isn't a CF though, and Ibanez isn't going to steal 30 bases a year. this as well. Ibanez = Dye defensively

QUOTE (Tex @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 04:54 PM) Easy in my mind. The team is in second place. KW has the pressure to win the division. I believe the most logical places to have the biggest impact down the stretch are starting pitching and the outfield. What pressure is there on the Jays? Possibly to shed $2 mil for the remainder of the year? While I do not believe there is much pressure on this deal, what little pressure there is would seem equal or even a little more on KW. The thing is, KW doesn't NEED Rios. Would he help? Most likely, but you also don't know the effect it has on Dye/Q/Pods not playing everyday. The pressure is all on the Jays, its not about just saving 2 million this year, its about risking not being able to move him PERIOD in the offseason. If they take a gamble and pull him off waivers to attempt a better offer in the offseason, and don't get it, they're screwed. With the way the economy is now, there's no way teams are going to both give up big name prospects and take on that salaray. -

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) I didn't mean as much as our financial commitments as much as as his decrease in performance the past few years. But we also have to take into account locking up young guys that are currently on the team or will be in the future. Beckham, Danks 1, Quentin, Alexei, Floyd. Too early to throw Hudson, Danks 2, and Flowers in there? Say we lock up the youngsters is '11. We'd have at least 40 million to play with, and too early for Danks 2.0/Flowers etc since they might not even be up by 2011. Beckham - either lock him up now or just ride out the 6 years we have control of him Danks 1.0 - 10ish mil a year, or possibly less if he signs the extension offer from last year this offseason Q - See Danks Alexei - 2 more years of him for cheap Floyd - locked till 2013. Dayan - locked till 2012 So we'd have 40 million for Beckham, Danks, Q, Alexei -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) Is that counting Peavy? Yes, 15, 16, 17 million extra each year respectively. Not including arbitration however (which shouldn't be astronomical anyway) Oh and 2013? - $0. (only arb) This team is in an incredible situation financially. -

QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 03:52 PM) I think that if we take on Rios' contract, it's going to bite us in the ass eventually. Maybe not this year or next year, but it certainly will by 2014 IMO. 2009 - ~98 million 2010 - ~60 million 2011 - ~43 million 2012 - ~27 million Not seeing how we're going to be strapped for cash anytime soon -
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 03:00 PM) Well this is getting off topic, but I think it's a legit question, why is there no comparison? Why is fighting ok (encouraged) in hockey? What does it add to the game that it couldn't/wouldn't in basketball? It gets mostly overlooked in football too, but I don't see why people treat basketball players so different, like basketball is not a physical sport. Basketball IS a physical sport, but not anywhere near the level that hockey/football are on. There's also the fact that the NBA's #1 priority is to make sure their league doesn't appear to be run by thugs, so they pussify the game to the point that players can't react normally anymore.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 10, 2009 -> 01:50 PM) I'm certainly not aiming this towards you but I can't help but to feel race is an element in these situations. Some young black kid makes it to the NBA, MLB, NFL, etc and continues to smoke pot, hang out with "thugs", or whatever and everyone calls them out on it. "What an idiot." "He just hit the lotto ad blew it." and on and on. And for some reason this guy blows it because of stupidity and it's because he's "developed problems". Don't know who this "everyone" is, but I couldn't care less about Hamilton. I've ripped that stupid "comeback story" since day one. I don't give a s*** that he was stupid enough to smoke crack after being drafted #1 and blew all his money. I'm tired of his story and I'm tired of him being given a stage to spew his religious garbage. Stupid doesn't have a race. It may be more prevalent with the young black kids since....and this may be a stretch here....but they come from poor neighborhoods where 95% of the population are thugs.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 9, 2009 -> 11:42 PM) I don't think there is any doubt that we failed with Javy. I have a feeling we did improve his mental makeup a bit, and perhaps the Braves were able to turn the corner with him on his mechanics. There is no denying that he has been an absolute horse this year, experience a renaissance of sorts. Granted he is pitching in a pitcher's park, in a weaker league. But anyone who wants to rip on Javy needs to have the same concerns with Jake Peavy. Their situations are quite similar. Big Game's "good" years: 2001 Expos (68-94, 5th place) - BG 16-11 3.42ERA 2003 Expos (83-79 4th place) - BG 13-12 3.24ERA 2007 Sox (72-90 4th place) - BG 15-8 3.74ERA -

But that, at this point, I’m thinking that I’m staying here. That’s the way I have to think about it,” Rios told reporters. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=cbc-...c&type=lgns Thats about the exact opposite of him saying he will deny it. He is saying that he has to assume he will be a Jay and can't think about all that other crap. Jesus man, stop reading so much into all these bs quotes from these guys. There is absolutely nothing "between the lines" in any of these quotes, its just standard issue fabricated one liners. Nothing more. -

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 9, 2009 -> 02:04 AM) Maybe it isn't the White Sox: KW on whitesox.com "You know how many times we've been sitting here and we [hear], 'Most likely it's the White Sox. They are going to do this, they are going to do that, the White Sox are involved in trade discussions with this guy, that guy,'" said Williams, holding court with the media prior to Saturday night's game against Cleveland. "And I'm sitting at home and I call [assistant general manager] Rick [Hahn] and I say, 'Hey, have you had conversations with team so and so? No, I haven't, so let's call [White Sox chairman] Jerry [Reinsdorf] to see if he had any.'" He CAN'T say anything about it. Do people expect him to just say "yeah I'm goin after Rios, just got off the phone with JP." -
