  1. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 09:32 PM) Who are the worst franchises in sports? 1. Raiders 2. Nationals 3. Thrashers 3b. Panthers The Panthers and Raiders each played for their respective sport's championship within the last 12 years. To me, that gives them a pass (but I'm old and still remember the 1996 Cup Finals and the Bucs v. Raiders Super Bowl). I'm sure most Detroit Lions fans would agree.
  2. I'm a positive guy, too. I'm positive Javy will never be more than a .500 pitcher who will crap himself in big games.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 08:00 AM) I'll agree with one thing, I don't care about prospects anymore. We need to get someone who can contribute immediately to the starting rotation, or, worse case scenario, a couple more potential closers that are AAA/1st/2nd year service players. The Brewers can't give us any starters, unless we realistically believe they'll give up Parra...which wouldn't make much sense, because you have no need for an elite closer if you have so many holes in your rotation, opportunities to save meaningful games would be somewhat limited. The other place to look is CF, and there you're talking Hart, Billy Hall, Gwynn Jr (as a fourth/fifth outfielder...which we don't really need, already having Owens/Anderson/Wise/Lillibridge). Trading for Hall is illogical, that doesn't save you any money at all, assuming Jenks will go up to around $5 million or so this season from $500K. I think we're in agreement. When I speak of value to the current squad, I'm not referring to top prospects (as someone else mentioned above). They have future value to be sure, but remain question marks themselves until they prove otherwise. I'm talking about guys who, if removed from the current roster, would leave a gaping whole. Given our bullpen woes, Bobby's loss would be huge. That doesn't make him untouchable, but if he goes, we need to make up for that loss by improving the current team in other ways, as ninth innings will become even scarier. Personally, I'm not sure we match up well with the Brewers for Bobby (although Lord knows they need a closer), because the best value we could receive for them would seem to be from their farm.
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 07:08 AM) You could say "they suck/ed" about 1/2 the players the White Sox have brought in over the last ten years...I'll highlight some particular names for you. Contreras D. Hermanson Politte Thornton Jenks Marte Uribe Gavin Floyd Alexei Ramirez Esteban Loaiza El Duque Tadahito Iguchi Jermaine Dye (not that he sucked, just was a big risk coming off injuries) Javier Vazquez Scott Podsednik Octavio Dotel Miguel Olivo Sure, there will always be plenty of Julio Ramirezes and DeAngelo Jimenezes to go around, Sisco, Aardsma, MacDougal, etc., but we have a pretty darn good track record of maximizing the potential of many of the prospects/suspects and undervalued veterans we've acquired in recent years. Sure, Nick Swisher was a pretty big disappointment, but he wasn't a big enough problem to keep up from winning the division, thanks to the likes of DeWayne Wise. True; but other than Pods (and maybe Contreras and Floyd), none of the above were acquired in exchange for a player of Jenks' value to the current squad. Most were acquired for cash. All suckage is relative. If we trade Bobby, we need to be fairly certain to get players back who can contribute now, not guys with mere potential.
  5. The Clippers. Nearly forty years of suckage; no titles whatsoever.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 09:04 AM) There once was a girl so tall Whose chest could not fit in a bra For filling a sweater There was no one else better
  7. Per the collective bargaining agreement, its the team's perfect right to offer arbirtation and Cabrera's whether to accept that offer or not. A sustainable grievance has to arise out of a violation of the agreement. There wouldn't be one here.
  8. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 10:53 PM) I have to agree. Avery seems like a first class jerk and I don't like him, but to suspend a guy indefinitely for a comment like that is going way overboard, and most people would agree if they weren't blinded by their hate for Avery IMO. How did MLB handle Ozzie calling Jaybird a f**? Did he get suspended or just fined and sentenced to sensitivity training? BTW, the suspension is only "indefinite" through today, as the jagoff is meeting with Bettman this morning (12/4).
  9. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 02:34 AM) To all those who voted for Grinch... Which one? The cartoon or live action? There is only one as far as I'm concerned: The Boris Karloff narrated classic.
  10. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 10:00 AM) Yep. Word out of the AFL is that people were pretty impressed with the development of his slider. Enough so to put him on the top 20 AFL prospects list. This makes me believe Poreda will take Logan's spot in the pen. I voted Richard and Broadway, but will keep hoping for someone more established.
  11. QUOTE (Texsox @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 07:33 AM) False. The person below me has used beer cans in a festive Holiday decoration True. Back "in the day," we made chains out of the old pull ring tabs. False to Steve; bummer, dude. The person below me has watched "Dancing with the Stars" for the hotties.
  12. The most disturbing aspect of this entire story is having to accept that a complete POS tool like Avery can score both Elisha Cuthbert and Rachel Hunter. There is no god.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) No way to Garland!! We just cleared the salary of a very "average" 4th starter in Vazquez. No need to reverse the gain of clearing that payroll and turn around and get similar or even worse (albeit predictable) results. Wolf, Oliver Perez and Garland will all get $10-12 million per season, and 3-4 year contracts. Heck, if Kyle Lohse can get 4/41, Garland might even get $48/4 despite his pretty pedestrian season. The Angels also offered him arbitration, FWIW. The Astros didn't with Wolf. Viewed as a Garland for Vazquez swap (plus the added Braves prospects), I don't think it would be such a bad deal IF we could get him (as a Type B free agent) for 3/$38. I think at least some of this freed up cash should go into the rotation, and a sure 200 innnings and double digit wins is nothing to sneeze at. I may still be wearing my 2005 blinders, but I see Garland > Wolf > Perez, and think he is the best of the "second tier" free agent pitchers out there.
  14. We better acquire somebody who has proven he can eat innings. I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but a rotation that includes two untested rookies AND relies upon no regression from Danks and Floyd, doesn't sound championship caliber to me. I know its cliche to pine for the return of ex-Sox, but does anyone think Jon Garland might be an option for 3 years or less? His so-so season might make him semi-affordable, and he wouldn't cost top picks.
  15. QUOTE (heirdog @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 12:40 PM) I, too, think that Abreu would be in our plans to play right/left and bat 2nd. He was a potential target around July 2007 (for Dye nonetheless) and I can see KW keeping track of him and grabbing him when he gets a chance (i.e. Vaquez, Griffey et al). We would still need a CF that could lead off (Tavares?). I know Abreu isn't the base stealer he once was nor is his power the same as in the past, but as a 2nd hitter, he could be great. The top 3 with CQ at #3 and #9 hitter (Getz?) sets up a nice group of non-base cloggers that will be followed by our base cloggers (thome, kong, aj). At least we have Alexei and Fields in there who seem less base-cloggy. I also think this may be Kenny's plan (to the extent his plans can ever be predicted). I'd be happy with this if we could get Abreu for two years and Tavares for small potatoes. But I'd rather have Uribe/Alexei up the middle than Alexei/Getz.

    Razors

Phillips Norelco, but not that super-cool looking three headed one they're advertising now. I use the flip-open "mustache trimmer" to get longer neck hairs first, moving up from Adam's apple to chin. Then I move in the same direction with the regular shaving foils. Works fine for me.
  17. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 08:28 AM) I'm just trying to figure out whether you actually believe they are called 'samwich' picks I believe the correct term is "sammich."
  18. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 1, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) The person below me didn't sleep last night False. The person below me shoveled or cleared snow this morning.
  19. As a kid in the 70's, I heard about this in my Catholic School every time we had a fire drill. I just learned earlier this year that a guy I've know for several years survived this as a first grader. Channel 11 had a gut-wrenching special about this several years ago. There are also a couple of books.
  20. QUOTE (shipps @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 09:24 AM) This is like a SNL Weekend update story. Its more like the skit when Bill Russell hosted (I think it was Russell), and he complains about being disciplined by his mother (Garrett Morris). "Mom, is it because I'm Black?"
