  1. Longoria is married to a Playmate. Ten years ago, the White Sox acquired Scott Podsednik, who also is married to a Playmate, and immediately won the World Series. Therefore, it is imperative the White Sox acquire Evan Longoria, so that they can immediately win another WS. I also understand that he happens to be kinda good at baseball, which can only be deemed a bonus.
  2. I did not realize that 6 years for a 31 y.o. pitcher was unprecedented. That he has had health issues (unrelated to pitching, I know) makes it more even so. And it could vest to 7 years? That's awful. Still, they have given themselves a pretty decent four year window to win. If they don't, Jed and Theo likely won't have to deal with years 5, 6 or 7. Given the team's cash and their century + of futility, this is a move that only the Cubs make, and I don't mean that as ridicule. Funny to think that the A's added Lester and Shark to a first place ball club and ended up winning dick.
  3. Because I want to pad my post count . . .
  4. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) I mean Imagine LSU coming up to Madison WI to play in December. Think of Bama playing in deep lake effect snow in South Bend. It would be AWESOME It would be beyond awesome, but like Hickory, I can't see it happening.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:20 PM) i honestly dont think Rex Ryan goes back to DC. His name and history is probably going to get him another HC job(a la Lovie) I'm not convinced of that. He's coached good defenses, but pretty crappy teams. Granted, the NYJ are a clusterf*** management-wise, but I don' think he's done much to distinguish himself as a head coach.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 02:24 PM) Worst kept secret of all time. Now the question is how mad will the fans be where its not their first or second choice. You're referring to Harbaugh, I presume?
  7. How likely is it that we could replace Mel Tucker with Rex Ryan, and would it make a damn bit of difference?
  8. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 09:17 AM) The Nebraska and Michigan vacancies are irrelevant to Illinois. They aren't going to be hiring from the same coaching pool anyways. I didn't mean to imply they were in the same class or pool; they certainly aren't--but all Power 5 vacancies are relevant to Illinois, if for no other reason than "trickle down."
  9. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 08:45 AM) Unfortunately I agree. I just hope this isn't a Zook situation where we're stuck with him for 3 more seasons. It was "bowl or bust," so its the right move to keep him for at least one more year, made more so because Mike Thomas hiring in a market that has vacancies at Neb and MI would be an utter disaster.
  10. Beckman is bad. I don't think I've ever hated an Illini coach more. But if they somehow beat NW and make a bowl, than his team has achieved a goal and a reasonable measure of success and, maybe more importantly, over come adversity by finishing strong to do it. If that happens (and I don't think it will), he deserves to stay (shudder).
  11. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 06:52 AM) One word: genius fixed: ("plastics" was from Buck Henry's screenplay)
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) good breakdown but I meant to ask how do the prospects for the 2015 draft look because the Bears should have a pretty decent pick. God, it sucks to be thinking about this in mid-November, but I guess its better than watching games. I don't know how these CBS lists are put together or by whom, but FWIW: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2015/OLB http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2015/ILB http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2015/SS http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2015/FS
  13. QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 08:47 AM) then who is Ellie May I like it. Of course we all know Jethro retired following his trade to Oakland.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) I don't see why. The guy just went through two serious injuries that took him off the court for two seasons. He had a kid in that time frame. I guess i'm assuming this, but you have to think that's going to put your basketball life into perspective. Another serious knee injury and he's not getting a contract with the Bulls, or if it is one, it's going to be for a back-up role. The fact that he's thinking about his future, to me, means he's put things in perspective. He's not an invincible 20 year old anymore. He - gasp! - might change his game a little to ensure he's got a decent future. Again, isn't this something we all kind of want? That he's not so reckless when he plays? That he maybe avoids a little more contact than he used to? That he not play when it's not really necessary to do so? It's a reach because you're taking issue with those citing the quote as proof of his stupidity, yet citing it as proof of him having some kind of enlightenment. As you say, they both involve assumptions. To me, given his history of less than stellar PR moves, the former assumption just seems a bit more likely.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 12:21 PM) My God, the kid gained some perspective on his life. Again, the horror.... I understand what you've been saying in your previous posts, but this seems like a really big reach.
  16. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 07:50 AM) No clue. Was it the Bcs title game? Assumed the illinois loss spoiled it. Yep. Nope.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 09:01 AM) It seems to be, but I don't think they are meant to be. I just think the guy is probably one of the nicest guys in the NBA, one of the most talented guys in the NBA, and in the team photo for least intelligent guys in the NBA. Sitting in the front and f***ing center.
  18. I'm not sure why exactly I think this, but I think he could be one of those Julio Franco/Edgar Martinez types that could rake as a DH into his 40s (not that I would want to give him 4 years; but I think he is worth big bucks for 3), especially since he hasn't really caught in years.
  19. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 30, 2014 -> 09:15 AM) I think the official scorer got caught up in the Bumgarner hype. The official scorer can only make the change on pitcher of record, if the pitcher was "ineffective in a brief appearance" according to the official rule. Affeldt was neither ineffective nor brief, so he obviously deserved the win. That was my take on it, too, but that doesn't reflect well on him as a supposed professional, whoever he is.
  20. Is anyone interested or intrigued by Wallenda's walk across the Chicago River this weekend? I am not hearing that much pub about it. I would love to go downtown and check it out, but will likely just tune in.
  21. This is a great hire. Absolutely, no question. So was Dusty Baker's. So was Lou Pinella's. So was Leo f'n Durocher's. Ned Yost just came within one or two bobbles of winning the World Series, which is closer than Maddon's been. Great, great hire. But the impact (especially in this town) is going to be vastly overstated. Next week's addition of Jon Lester will mean significantly more.
  22. Can someone please explain to me why (other than arguably deserved media slurping) Mad Bum was briefly credited with last night's "win?" I think the rules are absolutely clear that it should have gone to Affeldt who pitched 2+ shut out innings and was the pitcher of record when SF took the lead for good. In that scenario, there is no room for the official scorer discretion that can enter the picture when a starter doesn't go 5. Joe Buck can sometimes be an idiot, but after first acknowledging MB's "5 inning save," he later announced "word from the official scorer" that he was credited with the W. Later, ESPN announced a "scoring change" giving it to Affeldt. WTF?
  23. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 02:46 PM) Who do you guys have tonight and do you think it'll over/under 7 runs? I'll take the Royals and the over. Which means, of course . . . It is my sister's b-day today, and she got a ticket to the game as a gift from one pretty damn generous friend.
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 29, 2014 -> 06:31 AM) Jake sucked. It didn't matter because the Giants never scored. Hunter Pence prepares Jake Peavy for postseason starts.
  25. I'm really looking forward to tonight's Game 6. Curious to see what "Big Game Jake" brings and for how long.
