  1. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ Sep 27, 2012 -> 04:43 AM) Gentlemen, this season isn't over yet. We have a tough task ahead of us, yes. We've made it this far, and who knows by the end of tonight's play we could be in a tie for first again. True dat. Belushi/Germans/Pearl Harbor etc.
  2. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 26, 2012 -> 11:57 AM) Releasing transcripts is common. Even GWs were released I'm not certain that's correct, at least about W. I recalled those being "leaked," and found an old article from the New Yorker that seems to support that: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/1999/11/0...LIBRY_000019458 Everything else I've found from a Google search on the question seemed to come from highly partisan sources (on both sides), but I believe this is a newly Trumped up "issue."
  3. Isn't the release of several years of recent tax returns a commonly accepted campaign tradition started by Romney's dad? I've never heard of a similar thing regarding decades-old college transcripts, how and when did that start?
  4. "With one swing, Dunn produced as many runs as the Sox had scored in any game in a week." http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writ....html?eref=sihp
  5. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 25, 2012 -> 07:28 AM) It was the first time Pestano has allowed a homer on an 0-2 pitch in his career. That makes it even more remarkable. That guy has been solid. And The Big Lebowski intro was awesome.
  6. Important, late September home game against the Indians, with the team sputtering and clinging to the slimmest of first place leads. Something about this scenario seems vaguely familiar . . . . Here's hoping this is the night we GET OFF THE LEDGE and never look back.

Just finished "Billy Lynn's Long Half Time Walk" by Ben Fountain, which had been very well reviewed as the "Catch-22" of the Iraq War. I liked the "Catch-22" of WWII a lot better.
  8. Morel was bad. Youk is much better. The Sox are better off with the latter than the former. Thanks, Matt Klassen. That was really asute.
  9. I met a gin-soaked barroom queen in Memphis She had a moist vagina she took the midnight train going anywhere I said train kept a-rollin' all night long Train kept a-rollin' all night long Train kept a-rollin' all night long Train kept a-rollin' all night long With a heave and a ho Well don't you know that's the sound of the men working on the chain gang Oh, Oh, these chains of love got a hold on me, yeah. One of these mornings the chain is gonna break Chain, chain, chain (Chain...chain...chain..) Chain of fools! Wise Men say only fools rush in You got no money, you got no car, you got no woman, and there you are Sittin' downtown in a railway station, one toke over the line I don't get angry when my Mom smokes pot, Hits the bottle and goes right to the rock She's so high, like Cleopatra, Joan of Arc or Aphrodite Dear mother can you hear me laughing? Mama, I just killed a man A bullet had found him, His blood ran as he cried, No money could save him , So he laid down and he died "Where'd ya get the gun, John?" Told him take off all his clothes and put your penis next to mine And the Bulge in my big big big big big big big big big big big big big big BIG Even though sometimes it's a pain in the ass, I like having a detachable penis. Swingin' to the drums, swingin' to guitar, swingin' to the bass in the back of my car Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm It's like candy, I can feel it when you walk, even when you talk it takes over me Tequila Truck on down to the candy store, Bust your konk on peppermint candy Standing on the corner with a piece of pizza, Eat To The Beat Isn't it awfully nice to have a penis? Like a rock, standing arrow straight I wish I was anything but a rock. Heck, I'd even like to be a policeman . Mama, Mama. Someone said they made some noise, the cops have shot some girls and boys. Police and thieves in the street, scaring the nation with their guns and ammunition. Take me home, take me home, ooh baby let's get outta here. They got the guns but we got the numbers, gonna' win, yeah we're taking over. Tell all the folks in Russia and China too I'll give you a man who wants to rule the world I'm gonna sell my house in town and I'll be there. To shine in your Japan, to sparkle in your China, yes I'll be there. Everyone around me is a total stranger, everyone avoids me like a cyclone ranger I told her dealer I was broke, he hired a camera man. We did a porno film for coke, I hear I'm big in Japan Hot sweet cherries on the vine Hey little apple blossom, what seems to be the problem? Worries, worries pile up on my head, Woe is me I should have stayed in bed. This is my penis song. I wish that I had a bigger shlong And I'm crazy for you Pink Thing. Put my cards out on the table. Your black cards can bring you money so you hide them when you're able A case of aces done up loose for dealing. A piece of island cooling in the sea. I take a look at my enormous penis, and my troubles start a-meltin' away Its the same old story, same old song and dance, my friend.
  10. QUOTE (La Marr Hoyt HOF @ Sep 17, 2012 -> 10:12 AM) Sox desperately need this one today ... Tigers have 13 games against the Twinkies and Royals to close the season ... Let's go boys!!! I wouldn't necessarily use the "D" word in reference to the Sox, but this game is HUUUGE. Let's go get this one.
  11. There are 18 games left. Is the vesting of Myers option still a viable concern?

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) About 2. Just had to go read two more chapters during my lunch break. This book may not live to see tomorrow. That sounds about right.
  13. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 02:22 PM) Sometimes the landscape of the sport pits traditions against each other, and you have to decide which traditions to keep. The recent trend of DePaul, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova, and St. John's made playing in a predominantly Catholic conference and a good conference mutually exclusive options. Agreed. What do you think will happen with ND football in 10 years? Lots of variables to anticipate, but if they have to surrender independence (which if trends continue seems more likely than not) do you think they'll go all in with the ACC or finally join the Big 10? Sounds like an increased exit fee may motivate the former.
  14. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) Being Catholic may have been a factor that was played up by the media, but from ND's perspective, overall academic reputation was more important than specifically being Catholic. Also, four of the ACC schools (BC, Duke, WF, and Miami) are private and a couple of the public schools (UVA, GT) are on the smaller side for state schools have have much more of a private school atmosphere. Access to markets has always been important, in fact, the movement of a lot of those markets from the Big East to the ACC (Miami, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Pitt) is a big reason why ND is making the move as well. The Big East is a failing league, the Big 12 never had a chance, so it was down to the Big Ten and ACC and which one would blink first and offer ND a chance to remain independent in football. Not with respect to the point I'm trying to make. Being Catholic is central to the university's identity and for a very long time was heavily emphasized by the school itself with respect to athletics, dating all the way back to it having to withstand Fielding Yost leading the blackballing of ND from the Big 10 in the days when anti-Catholic biogtry was so prevalent it caused scheduling problems. I recall the membership of other Catholic schools specifcally cited by ND as a factor when it joined the Big East, although I don't presume it was the dominant factor over academics. I get how the ACC is the better play for the school against the modern landscape and in light of how wobbly the Big East is after the recent defections. It just seems that this is another one of several things once trumpted by the Domers as important to their traditions--not playing in bowl games, never firing a coach under contract, that have gone by the boards of late, and I wonder how long it will be before football independence goes. too.
  15. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 11:00 AM) None of those schools are of any use to ND. DePaul, Marquette - ND is already big in the Midwest, especially Chicago. Georgetown, Providence, St. John's - Maryland, BC, and Syracuse provide access to the same markets. Plus the ACC gives ND access in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Also, ACC has seven top 50 schools academically, the Big East has one. My point was more about ND's character and place as a private, Catholic university, something that it will now share with only 1 fellow conference member (and I think w/o BC joining first this doesn't happen). That used to be cited as major factor in all decisions impacting the school, and was one that was mentioned alot in its decision to join the "old" Big East years ago. I think its interesting that this now appears to rank relatively lower among factors considered, which as you note, seems to driven more prominetly by "access to markets."
  16. QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 12, 2012 -> 10:20 AM) I would prefer Notre Dame to be a full fledged member now but it is just a matter of time now. Really the only conference that makes sense since there is no interest between ND and the Big 10. Yeah, the Big East made no sense for Notre Dame, especially as long as it was keeping football and hockey out. ND has nothing in common with schools like DePaul and Marquette, let alone Georgetown, Providence, Villanova or St. John's.
  17. I wonder what our response will be. A rocket attack upon an embassy is technically an attack upon the U.S. and thus an act of war, but this appears to have been the work of a mob, as opposed to the Libyan government or army, and Libya is profusely apologizing and saying all the right things. I would hope arresting and turning over the responsible parties to the U.S. would be the goal here and that we take control of that, but no doubt this thing will become an election year political football.
  18. Gavin was getting off to horrible starts when he was pitching in the regular rotation. What are the chances he suddenly comes out (and stays) sharp after coming off the DL? I agree with the decision to start him tonight over Liriano, but I am not optimistic. Hopefully, the rest and his record of success against the Tigers will carry the day for him, but I think the first few innings will really be key, as is often the case when he pitches.
  19. Whoa, that's impressive. Sox gotta win just to reward that effort. Let's do this.
  20. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Sep 11, 2012 -> 10:21 AM) BURN! Yeah, that was a good one.
  21. For some reason, I had a hard time getting out of bed that day. My wife had already left for work when I heard about the first plane from 'XRT news on the clock radio. I was sure it was a small, private plane and turned on the TV wondering if they would even have pictures. My first (groggy) reaction was that it didn't look too bad and could be fixed. Then I watched the second plane fly into other tower live as it happened. To this day I have dreams about 9/11 more often than is probably "normal," considering I didn't personally know any victims.
