"Drive" was very good, very cool. I must really be getting old, though, because I absolutely hated the distracting soundtrack; it reminded me of a bad, late-nite cable 80's flick.

  3. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Feb 24, 2012 -> 06:06 AM) I would say 2013. That is of course provided the world doesn't end this December. You watch. Everything works against the White Sox. First it was the player's strike, now it will be the damn Mayans.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2012 -> 11:32 AM) Chuck Garfien ‏ @ChuckGarfien I asked Jake Peavy if he'd like to pitch Opening Day. He said, "I'd love to see Johnny [Danks] get that nod." I think that's cool.

I'm trying to psyche myself up to start "Infinite Jest." Its length and all the footnotes make it a little intimidating. Has anybody here tackled it?

"The Thing" prequel was underwhelming. It was kind of cool to see some of the "tie-ins" to the original, but John Carpenter did all of the same things much better in the original. I hope "Prometheus" doesn't similarly disappoint.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 23, 2012 -> 11:41 PM) Anyone looking forward to WANDERLUST It has Jennifer Aniston and Malin Akerman, so that's a big YES.
  8. Be good to yourself. Do something, buy something, go somewhere you would never have done if she was still in your life. I also completely endorse working out; that goes along with being good to yourself. Excessive drinking does not, so don't overdue it. And I'm a hyprocrite for saying it, because I've failed to do it myself, but cutting off all contact is absolutely for the best. Another problem with drinking is that it lowers the resolve as far as that is concerned. In the end, there's no substitute for time, which its going to take, no matter what you do or don't do. All the best
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 24, 2012 -> 08:12 AM) Sorry, but an independent arbitrator found him not guilty. Technically, "Guilty" or "Not Guilty" are criminal law concepts determined by a "reasonable doubt" standard that have NOTHING to do with what was determined by baseball's labor relations arb panel. Legal semantics aside, getting off on a procedural technality (like improper chain of custody) is a far cry from the exhoneration he will spin it to be. Edit: The technicality also makes it unfair to condemn him as a definite juicer.
  10. Dave Duerson's family is apparently suing the NFL for wrongful death over his suicide. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/foot...8&eref=sihp I guess they have that right, but to me, that is wrong on a number of levels.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2012 -> 11:03 AM) Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan Peavy is ten pounds lighter, about 190, to take weight off his right ankle. Oh, yeah. With all the talk about his reattached lat, I had forgotten about his ankle.
  12. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 23, 2012 -> 09:06 AM) At least 162 games and October 3rd Not necessarily. "Sometimes it rains."
  13. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 22, 2012 -> 01:33 PM) If he knew he had one and hid symptoms to keep playing he's a complete idiot. I really hope that isn't the case. You have a point, but on the other hand, because of the concussion, he literally may not have been in his "right mind." I'm not sure the effects of those things are completely understood.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Feb 21, 2012 -> 11:06 PM) Just started "The Given Day" by Dennis Lehane on a friends recommendation. I liked it, but its kind of a departure from his other stuff.

For a movie with no conventional plot whatsoever, "The Tree of Life" was a cool experience. It was different, beautiful to look at, and made me think. I think it helped that I knew a little about what to expect going in and tried to keep an open mind. It was absolutely gorgeous--as one might expect from Terrance Malick--and although it wasn't really entertaining in the traditional sense, it held my interest by keeping me engaged in trying to interpret everything I was seeing (even though it did leave me feeling a little dumb in that regard and probably could have been 15 to 20 minutes shorter). I had read Roger Ebert compare it to "2001" that way, and I think that was a good call. My wife, who at first thought I had brought home a "Brad Pitt movie" absolutely hated it and went to be after a half hour. I certainly can understand that reaction.
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 20, 2012 -> 02:30 PM) D-Rose plays today... in 30 minutes. Go Bulls! I guess if he can play, he should play, but I'd sure be tempted to keep him out through the break.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 16, 2012 -> 02:35 PM) Chris Kuc @ChrisKuc NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says Chicago "is on the radar" for a future NHL All-Star Game. Whitney Houston's Super Bowl anthemn has been mentioned a lot lately (for obvious reasons), but Wayne Messmer's at the last All Star Game here (also during Gulf War I) was really something, too.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 16, 2012 -> 04:18 PM) Dealy Plaza really changed the way that I viewed the assassination. I had no idea how small of an area we were talking about until I visited it. Plus the Museum was incredible. Agreed. And it left me with an odd feeling of deja vu, visiting a place I'd never been to but yet had seen countless times.
  19. Does Dealey Plaza count?
  20. QUOTE (Capn12 @ Feb 16, 2012 -> 12:22 PM) I was about to revolt until I went and saw the name of the song is "If I Wanted Someone". Someone covering a Beatles song makes me angryface, but thats not the case here. Ugh, my bad. Sorry. Ironcially, the tune almost does sound like it could be a cover, but of Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

I thought "Contagion" was pretty well done, considering there's like a billion movies with that premise.
  22. I first heard of Dawes from this thread a few years back, and I'm grateful to whoever it was that posted about them. I'm in love with their second album, and the track "If I Needed Someone" is terrific.
  23. One night before a Republican primary, a liberal, a moderate and a conservative walk into a bar . . . Seeing this, the bartender cries, "How come you're not out campaigning, Gov. Romney?"
  24. A question about running distance for the math majors on here: Can I assume treadmill distance is calculated merely as a function of time and belt speed and doesn't account for stride length? I've always thought 0% incline treadmill running was supposed to be "easier" than on the road, but lately find myself having a harder time doing equivalent distances and times indoors than out. I'm 6'5" and a long strider, so I'm guessing that I'm actually covering a bit more more ground than the machines at my club are telling me, assuming they're even correctly calibrated to begin with. Does that make any sense?
