I've seen exactly 0 nominated films, although I brought home "Midnight in Paris" and "Moneyball" from my library last night. I find it much more surprising that Jonah Hill got a best-supporting nod than Melissa McCarthy, who I thought was great in "Bridesmaids." Brad Pitt, too for that matter. Again, I haven't seen it yet, but I wouldn't think that acting the part of a baseball executive requires superior dramatic range or skill.

SOXOBAMA's opinion: Payton > Jordan

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 19, 2012 -> 03:33 PM) Walter Payton was really good. I don't know about best ever though. I like Jim Brown and Barry Sanders too. I'm close to 47, and I watched Walter's whole career. He wasn't quite as powerful as Brown or as gracefully elusive as Sanders, but unlike anyone else I have ever seen, he combined the best elements of both. All things considered, I believe he was the greatest running back to ever play in the NFL. All of that said, Jordan was more dominant. I consider myself truly fortunate to have seen both win championships and play in their primes. -
Caught "30 Minutes or Less" last night on DVD. Danny McBride and Jesse Eisenberg are both essentially one-note actors, but I find just about everything McBride does to be hilarious, while Jesse's act is getting kind of old.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 16, 2012 -> 09:18 PM) Everything onto a credit card. Credit cards paid in full once a month from bank account online. I used to do this, both for convenience and to maximize credit-card airline miles. I learned the hard way that you really have to be extra diligent in checking your bills for accuracy before they get put on the card, because once they do, you lose leverage in a billing dispute. Now I only do that with payments that I know will be the same amount every month, like my gym membership.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2012 -> 09:40 AM) I am in the middle of a great book called Columbine by Dave Cullen. I have gotten about 150 pages down in about three train rides. The book is amazing and really dispels a lot of the things that were reported and now ingrained about what actually went down there. I am going to pick up the King book when I get a chance. Thanks for the reviews. That book is excellent. I met Dave Cullen this Fall at my library, where he did a Q&A and signed my hardcover (another reason why I'll never get a Kindle). I'm halfway through "11/22/63" and thoroughly engrossed.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2012 -> 08:04 AM) The Debt was pretty solid. Liked the way they unraveled it, even if the story was obvious. I liked it, too. I was kinda disappointed with "Horrible Bosses." Found it amusing, but not hilarious. Some of Jennifer Aniston's lines were great though.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 11, 2012 -> 07:19 PM) Refs bailing NW out multiple times in 2nd half. Didn't see much before the end of regulation, but as a neutral observer, Willie got hosed Big Time at the end of regular time. NW guy was fouled multiple times by two (or three) different MI players as he tried for the winning shot, but instead got whistled for an up and down. -

I know plenty of Domers who won't be happy with this: http://espn.go.com/chicago/ncf/story/_/id/...tract-extension He's contractually their coach until 2016. That's one year beyond the expiration of the last guy's extended contract. -
QUOTE (Disco72 @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 02:59 PM) It was good, not great, imo. Interesting but not nearly as compelling as The Devil in the White City. I second this re "In the Garden of the Beasts," but to be fair, "White City" is a hard one to match, let alone top.

I haven't read Steven King in years, but I asked for "11/22/63" for Christmas, as it seemed to have an interesting premise. I'm not far enough into it to have an opinion yet. I really liked "The Art of Fielding." It has a baseball backdrop, but really can't be called a "baseball book." Finished "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" ahead of seeing the movie, and found it to be a rare instance of my liking the film better. For me, the 1st 2/3 of the book really dragged. And I feel like a real heathen for saying this, but "The Road" bored me silly.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 6, 2012 -> 10:10 AM) Pffff. Only to morons who can't smell a starf***er when it's right under their nose. Listen, when the girl's argument is she "passed out" presumably from being wasted, it's hard to believe Castro would just get on top and start banging her. She was into it, and realized there's a good chance for cash. Some men sexually assault women. Some women set up rich men. Personally, I have a hard time telling the difference just going off the internet.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 2, 2012 -> 11:07 PM) Finally got around to watching The Prestige. Not bad. I'm a big fan, but I thought I was in the minority on that one. Christopher Nolan is really on a great run.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 3, 2012 -> 09:24 AM) Wonder if Phillips was canned as well........ George McCaskey......a new Rocky Wirtz........ I think Lovie does a nice job would liek ot remove all personnel decisions from him I think it was Martz(Lovie) v Angelo wiht Angelo having no leg to stand on I'd be surprised and a little disappointed if Phillips is gone; I think he's more a bean counter and adminsitrator than a talent guy. And perhaps it's a tad early on the Wirtz comparison? -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 1, 2012 -> 12:10 PM) Girlwith the Dragon Tattoo met and exceeded my expectations. Likewise. David Fincher is cool.

Interesting piece on the Illini and their "Interim Bowl" in SI Online. Apparently, several assistant coaches aren't at all happy with their treatment during the transition: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writ...p;sct=hp_t13_a2 -
Will Tell-- If you bought the tickets and have the order # or receipt, maybe you can call Ticketmaster or the box office and report the tickets as lost or stolen, so they can issue you replacements.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 03:15 PM) He was saying that the contract wasnt all he wanted. Luckily Beckman can coach D somewhat, i'm sure he'll bring someone in that is from one of his previous gigs. Illinois' D-Line coach is staying, so that's something. That's really been a strength the last few years, and he's supposedly a good recruiter with Florida ties.
