My original point wasn't that Ozzie was (or recently became) a bad manager against the AL Central, but that KW has failed in recent years to give Ozzie a roster that "matches up" well and can win against AL Central opponents. I don't see Ozzie doing anything radically different in divisional games than other games that would explain the poor record against the Central in recent years. I'm therefore sorta blaming Kenny by process of elimination.

As coach of the Chicago Bears, Dave Wannstedt went 1 -11 against the Green Bay Packers in six years. This was cited as a major reason for his dismissal. As coach of The Ohio State Buckeyes, John Cooper went 2-10-1 against Michigan in 13. This was also cited as a major reason for his dismissal. Just this year alone, the Chicago White Sox are 0-5 against a fourth place, sub-five hundred Minnesota Twins team. Their intra-divisional record is a feeble 7 -14. I'm too lazy to look up records in other years, but I'm pretty sure its not good either. It seems to me that baseball, like most sports, is a game where you have some ability to field a team specifically tailored to beat other teams; i.e., if the top teams you compete against are loaded with left handed hitting, you can go after a particular LOOGY or lefty starter; if an opponent relies on speed, you can emphasize holding runners close, make sure your catcher and right fielders have good arms, etc. You can't win championships if you can't beat your primary and closest divisional/conference/league rivals. It seems pretty apparent that the White Sox, as constructed by Kenny Williams and managed by Ozzie Guillen, cannot. This can't be a fluke or just a mental thing. I love Ozzie, but have never thought of him as a great manager. In contrast, I've always loved Kenny and his balls to the wall attitude, but this team sucks within the AL Central. Its got to be more than just the players not playing well or Ozzie mismanaging games because of the color of a particular opponent's uniforms. I have determined that Kenny must go. Not because of the Teahan contract, not because of Dunn, not because of Rios, and not because of the two Swisher trades. As awful as those recent moves have been, he still probably has more hits than misses. He has to go because the roster he has built seems incapable of beating the teams it must in order to succeed. That should mean Ozzie goes too, because a new GM has to be able to hire his own guy. I'd be ok with that, but I think most of the blame for this debacle has to lie with Kenny. I hope the Sox get hot and Kenny makes a key deadline acquistion that puts the team over the top as we demolish the Tigers, Royals and Twins in the second half (we've done well against the Tribe so far, I know). I just don't see that happening, and sadly, don't see that anything will be done about it if it doesn't.

I don't see any basis for a federal law like that in any event. IMO, unless a crossing of state lines would be involved, it would have to be adopted on an individual state or local level, and Congress would be powerless to enact it.

JC -- There are numerous signs flashing at you in blinding neon light, all of which read: RUN FAST. RUN FAR. Seriously, you sound like too nice a guy to get ensnared in all this psycho-drama. Nothing is worth that. She was likley nuts long before she met you, and will remain nuts long after you're gone from the picture. There's nothing you can do to change that, and therefore nothing assholic whatsoever about checking out immediately. Its completely the best thing for you to do.

I grew up with the Apollo program. The Shuttle program couldn't really compare with the grandeur of that, but it was still exciting (and it and the ISS were much cooler than Skylab). I'm sad to see it go, and sadder still to think that for the first time in over 50 years, our country will not be sending astronauts into space. Instead, we'll be paying "space fare" to Russia to do that for us. That was once unimaginable.

I agree with Badger. I think its hard to overcome the natual instincts of ordinary folks to not want to accept or believe that a sane mother would murder her own, beautiful child with pre-meditation, let alone convince a jury of that beyond a reasonable doubt with no concrete, direct evidence. They should not have pursued the dealth penalty for murder one.

Last week, he was still going up to the Metallica cover of Bob Seger's 'Turn the Page."

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jul 5, 2011 -> 01:59 PM) The prosecution "trunk guy" testified that there were traces of chloroform and elements of decomposition present in the trunk. The defense "trunk guy" said the decomposition could have been something else, but I don't think they rebutted the chloroform. Also, I got the impression that the body was pretty wasted away, like a skeleton. Would they have expected to find chloroform during the autopsy? I was checking around and saw this was right: the prosecution experts said the level of C was "shockingly high," but the defense said no more than would be found in common cleaning products. I believe the state of the body did make it hard for the autopsy to conclusively determine the exact cause of death, which was something that obviously worked to the defense's favor.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Jul 5, 2011 -> 01:41 PM) Their defense was a story that is completely incoherent and depends on the word of people (Casey and her parents) who are known to be liars. Sorry, but I think any doubt about her guilt is unreasonable. You don't do google searches for "how to make chloroform" and "neckbreaking", then have your daughter go missing for a month (which you don't report because you're busy partying), and have the trunk of your car have traces of chloroform and the stench of death....all as a coincidence. I may be wrong, but I don't think there was any chloroform found in the car. I know none was found in the autopsy.

Not saying I would have voted that way, just saying I'm not surprised by the verdict. Call it the "Bruckheimer Effect," but in the age of CSI, I think juries are loathe to convict solely on circumstantial evidence. Evidence of internet searches and of being a party-girl, lying slut are just not equivalent to DNA, etc. As a practical matter, science has given a whole new meaning to "beyond a reasonable doubt."

Not surpirsed. My wife watched this all weekend. I tried to avoid it as much as possible, but it seemed from what I gathered that although there was lots of damning evidence against her as a person, there was little that she actually committed the murder of that the poor little girl.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 5, 2011 -> 11:25 AM) Its easy in the sense that if you make a motion towards home, either you throw home or you balk. It isn't like a move to first base where every ump has a little different subjectivity to what the line is exactly. Watching it again, last night wasn't "motion," (as in windup or stretch) so much as subtle movement of his shoulder, more like a slight lean.
-
For me, unless a pitcher stops half-way through his motion, there's almost no such thing as an "easy" balk call. I have to be honest, I've watched baseball for a long, long time, and I almost never pick it up on my own.

Huge props to Coop for Humber, but you can't teach heart. Phil battled all day. He's the story of the first half.

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jul 2, 2011 -> 04:39 PM) Why wouldn't it be? A no hitter's a no hitter, regardless of whether the team wins. It was only 8 innings. Yankees were on the road.

Good Juan.

Lucky call there.

New blog post about Hawk, "Moneyball," Sabermetrics, etc
clyons replied to 3GamesToLove's topic in Pale Hose Talk
That blog entry was well written. I'm sure Hawk probably does qualify, but as some have pointed out in this thread, not all Moneyball critics are blinders-wearing, old-timer Traditionalists. -
The title of this thread made me mildly excited, as I thought it perhaps implied that, like in the song "Ode to Billie Joe," the main character had jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge. That, of course, was wrong of me, because as far as I know, Billie Joe McAllister never hit a game-winning, RBI triple in the Crosstown Classic at Wrigley Field.

How awful for anyone.

Second nice come back in a row. f*** the cubs.
