  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 04:51 PM) Until yesterday, Lou Brock had the lowest OBP of anyone else in the HOF. I did not know that. That obviously then also gives him the lowest OBP of any first-ballot inductee. Funny what over 3,000 hits, 900+ steals and lifetime BA just shy of .300 will cause some writers to overlook.
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 07:08 PM) He's probably the 2nd best leadoff hitter of all time. Are you just forgetting about Lou Brock or do really think Raines was better? I'd want Ichiro at the top of my order before Raines as well.
  3. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 7, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) Cardinals Me too. Midwest city; good fans; great history; whoop the Cubs.
  4. That new Taco Bell commercial where the dude asks to order from "Denise" to get the inside deal for 89 cents is ridiculous. No Taco Bell on earth employs two girls remotely that attractive.
  5. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jan 5, 2010 -> 05:22 PM) easily the best lefty of this era....right up there with clemens maddux and pedro as the best overall...legit arguement can be made for him being the best of this generation in fact a legit arguement can be made for him being the best lefty ever and among the top 5 or so pitchers to ever play I agree with the first half of this post; not sure about the second, especially the last part.

    Remember when...?

QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 09:17 PM) You could actually buy pop in glass bottles. . . . and you had to return the bottles to the Jewel to get your deposit back?
  7. QUOTE (Knackattack @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 11:54 AM) If we could land one of those types of bats for just Gavin, then yeah, go for it; however, I really don't think we could get a Fielder/Gonzalez without parting with both Gavin and Hudson. I think you're right. Welcome to Soxtalk and Happy New Year!
  8. QUOTE (Knackattack @ Dec 31, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) No way. Floyd is signed cheaply and has proven himself in USCF. If anyone gets traded, it should be Hudson. I don't think Hudson could net a Fielder or Gonzalez in return. I love Gavin, but given the chance to add a bat like that to team that still would have Peavy-MB-Danks at the top of the rotation and Hudson/Freddy/Torres at the bottom would be too sweet to pass up.
  9. I can't recall any particular warm fuzzies of my own, so I'll share one I have from 2008 with my own son, who was 4 years old at the time. It was the super-hot, August day game against KC when the Sox hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs. But that wasn't even the best part. We had club seats, and at one point sought refuge in the air-conditioned concourse. While we were sitting on a couch watching the game on the plasmas, a Sox employee came up to my son and asked to "borrow" his mitt. The look on my son's face said "not on your life," but he politely relented. The guy returned it a few minutes later, and when my son went to put it on, he found an official ball inside. I'll never forget the look on my son's face then.
  10. QUOTE (SockMe @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 02:35 PM) I just got standing room tickets. For anyone who has done that before, what is that like? Where do they let you stand? Is the new Madhouse bar like the Bullpen Sportsbar where you have to get there super early to get a good view of the action?
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) From what I have read, it was the kids total lack of respect that brought on the threat of being kicked off the team Then to me, he should have been kicked off the team (or suspended) for that lack of respect, and that would have been the end of it. Even if "the shed" or "the closet" weren't exactly "the hole," it seems apparent that Leach sent him there because he reported a concussion. Post-Rashidi Wheeler, etc. that's just absolutely, flat-out stupid behavior from a coach. Nevertheless, I still think there's more at issue here than has come out so far. This seems pretty hypocritical coming from the school that hired Bob Knight.
  12. Toews, Keith and Seabrook are Canadian Olympians. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/...eam-canada.html
  13. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 12:45 PM) If I am Cincinnati I hire Leech to coach in their BCS Bowl game. The Sugar Bowl kicks off in like 54 hours.
  14. From the ESPN article: "He [Leach] wrote [in his affidavit] "absolutely" no evidence had been given to him that showed he had violated any university rules or standards." I'm going to assume that Texas Tech believes that this statement was untrue, and thus added to the "cause" for which they fired Leach. Its pretty likely that the school presented Leach with "some" evidence (even if Leach considered it weak) to justify the suspension in the first place. Otherwise, firing him on the courthouse steps just prior to his hearing seems pretty ballsy, if not foolish.

    DIRECTV

I've been a customer for 11 years and have a love/hate relationship with them. I've had a handful of billing and technical issue over the years, and dealing with customer service has always been an absolute hassle. How they win all those "JD Power" awards I'll never know. Maybe their people are just mildly less stupid than your average phone flunky for cable, but most of them are more annoying than helpful. The "rainfade" used to drive me crazy, but as others have said, it has gotten a lot better. In any event, unless they resolve the Versus issue, I am gone for At&T Uverse as soon as my contract is up. To pay $100 a month for TV and not get to see the Hawks in the playoffs makes my blood boil just thinking about it. There is a really informative satellite forum called dbstalk.com (I think). I suggest you check it out.
  16. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 05:03 PM) I'm not mentioning anything from 2005. WAY too easy. My top 10 in no order: 10:The game against Indians at home right after completing a perfect 7-game sweep on the road against those same Indians and Yankees in 2000. The reception the team got that night had me shaking like a leaf. 9: Carlos Lee's walkoff slam against the Cubs in 2001. 8: The comeback against the Cubs in 2002 in which we were down 8-0 and won like 12-9 or something close to that. 7: The game against the Twins in 2003 in which Konerko, who was doing his best Brent Lillibridge impression to that point in the season, hit a two out, game-tying HR in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extras. Then the greatest player in franchise history ended in the 12th. 6: Jose Valentin mocking Sammy Sosa's HR trot in I believe 2003? 5: Jose Valentin's walkoff vs the Cubs in 2003. 4: Joe Crede's slam against Chad Qualls in 2006 that tied the game at 5. It was so eerily similar to PK's slam. 3:Mark's no-hitter vs the Rangers. 2: Mark's perfect game against the Rays. 1: Wise's catch that saved Mark's perfect game. Honorable mention: Not White Sox related, but Steve Bartman and game 6 of '03 the NLCS will always have a special place in my heart. Great non-'05 list, but imo Game 163 has to be on there somewhere, and there may have been better City Series moments than 9, 8, and 6 (Gooch's slam after the brawl, AJ's game-winning 3-jack in the Urinal).
  17. Wire-to-wire division leaders, back-to-back-to-back-to-back complete ALCS games, and 11-1 in the playoffs says alot. Not as much as consecutive national championships by co-ed collegiate lacrosse players, but a lot.
  18. QUOTE (G&T @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 08:24 AM) Got to love the Sein. And to further hijack the hockey thread, "Happy Festivus" to all.
  19. QUOTE (Mr. Showtime @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 10:38 PM) Where did ESPN Classic go? I have DirecTV and have it. Channel 208. After getting it for all of my 9 years as a customer, they recently moved it out of my package and to a more expensive tier. Its not a channel I watch a lot, and I didn't even know it was gone until I tried to watch the Illinois-Northwestern football game this fall.
  20. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 07:35 PM) Someone keep me posted. I come home and DirecTV has screwed me. SOB. Same here. Since I last re-upped with DirecTV, they've taken away Versus and ESPN Classic. So much for them catering to the sports fan. If I miss playoff games because of their pissing match with Comcast, I'll go absolutely apes***.
  21. Just noticed this in the Player of the Decade poll: "Mark Buehrle: No hitter, perfect game, 1-0 with save in World Series, started longest World Series game in history" The "World's Greatest Newspaper" embarrasses itself again; Burls started WS Game 2 and got a ND; Garland started the marathon Game 3 (which Buehrle did save).
