  1. Not only will he be enshrined, they will change the name to "The Hall of Beckham." The current museum will become its foyer.
  2. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 3, 2009 -> 09:37 AM) Here's the problem I have with this...how do you penalize a team for finding a way around the system? I mean, if this is the case, all you can do is say, going forward, this won't be allowed. But, everyone agreed and signed off on it, including the NHL, I'm assuming or else they wouldn't have been able to announce it, yes? I couldn't agree more, assuming that's what happened (I'm certainly no "capologist"). If the Hawks merely found and exploited a loophole, then they certainly shouldn't be punished for taking advantage of the system; the existing loophole should just be closed. And its true that in order for the NHL to establish wrongdoing, someone in the Hossa camp or Hawks' front office would have to rat themselves out, so I don't see that happening. What's weird is that you'd think a competitive, thriving Hawks franchise would be so good for the league as whole, it would be encouraged and supported rather than attacked, as seems to have been happening lately. Not that they should get a free pass or anything, but this can't be the first time some team has thought of this. Frankly, I have a hard time accepting that the Hawks could be that smart.
  3. Illinois v. Arizona. 2005 NCAA Midwest Regional Final. My hands remained swollen for two days from clapping so hard, and my voice stayed hoarse for five.
  4. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 2, 2009 -> 12:28 AM) I think that I've come to terms with the fact that Wise is this year's Timo. "C'mon, Dweezy! C'mon Dweezy!"
  5. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 04:57 PM) Nix is doing a fantastic job at the plate today. Yo, T. You need a new sig, brotha!
  6. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) Dude behind home plate is screwing with SouthPaw. . . . and that just ain't right.
  7. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 10:28 AM) I understand where you're going with that, but if they were recording conversations (either by tape or email) about circumventing the salary cap, that would be so much dumber than a clerical error that it's not even in the same stratosphere. Again, there's no proof that they did that, but those last tacked-on years of the contract certainly raise a red flag, which is why they're being looked at now. I know, and I wasn't implying that Dale was doing anything that Nixonian, merely that maybe there was a wisp of this nvestigation coming down the pike before he was canned, and perhaps factoring into it.
  8. QUOTE (robinventura23 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 03:44 PM) Wouldn't it be great if he started that make up game at Wrigley after all that hype about them getting him? Yeah. Better still if he beats them.
  9. This just puts the Tigers in a better position to compete with us. Like last year.
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 08:35 AM) And if pulls the ball, well, Fenway park is probably the worst place to be for a left handed home run hitter. Besides Big Papi, there was this dead pull hitter named Williams who seemed to do ok there. Also another lefty with a funny name. I think I've heard Hawk mention him before.
  11. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 02:40 AM) Even though it's fairly obvious that this was the intent of the cheap years tacked on at the end, I don't know how you prove that unless there are tapes or emails out there. Which would be INCREDIBLY stupid. Agreed. It would be real, real dumb. Like failing to get offers out on a timely basis. A guy could get fired for doing stuff that dumb.
  12. Take the kids to "Kiddieland" in Melrose Park. It is closing after this season.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 08:07 AM) Heck, I'd like to see the original sources as well, not just the discrediting ones. I understand it says "WHO Said...", but I'd like to know more. I may have to go Googling. I'm pretty sure the obesity and infant mortality points are valid, and quickly found the following: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/health/07stat.html http://abcnews.go.com/Health/GlobalHealth/story?id=1266515 http://www.forbes.com/2007/02/07/worlds-fa...08worldfat.html
  14. I should also have mentioned the back-to-back-to-back-to-back home run game last year vs. KC. You don't see that everyday.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 09:38 AM) Whoops...van Yeah, one that he can live in . . . . DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!!!
  16. I didn't see this posted yet. Interesting article on the perfecto's "unsung hero," our anti-Bartman. http://blogs.chicagotribune.com/news_colum...im-unsteve.html
  17. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 08:20 AM) That Phillies' video makes you realize how monumental this feat was... only 18 in history. The whole f***ing world was watching Mark Buehrle THROW A PERFECT GAME. Yeah, I saw that on ESPN News and thought it was one of the cooler aspects of their coverage. The Phils reaction to Dweezy's catch was awesome.
  18. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 08:42 PM) Unfortunately I had to work today but it got me thinking. Which games have I attended that were the most memorable. Here's mine in order: 1 - Game 4 of the World Series (Only post season game I ever attended unless you count my next pick) 2 - Game 163 3 - The 1993 clincher when Bo Jackson homered 4 - Late inning comeback on Frank Thomas' first game as an Athletic 5 - The first game the Sox played here after their impressive 9 - 0 road trip in 2000 I was at four of your five (I missed #3). I also made the dropped third strike game (2005 ALCS Game 2) and the Blowout of the BoSox in ALDS Game 1. IIRC, #4 ended on a walk off bunt by Pablo Ozuna. Good times.
  19. For some reason, it makes watching a no-no so much cooler when there's a great catch to preserve it; it not only enhances the drama, but almost creates a sense of the inevitable. As a kid growing up in Chicago, I remember seeing highlights of Billy Williams leaping into Wrigley's vines to preserve one for Kenny Holtzman. I vividly remember watching OneDog lay out to keep Wilson Alvarez's alive in his first White Sox start. This one, coming in the 9th to preserve a perfecto, was the ultimate. All things considered, it was one of the greatest catches I've ever seen PERIOD, and will be remembered by each of us forever.
  20. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) In Mark's no hitter, Dye brought back a homer. In this perfect game, Wise brought back a homer. And in Mark's no hitter, Dye hit a granny. In this perfect game, it was Josh.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) thanks MLB.tv btw for letting me see that. Yes, that was very, very cool. And thanks to whoever shared that in the gamethread.
  22. Wanted so bad to post in the game thread, but didn't want to be the jinx. WAY TO GO MARK!!! Helluva catch Dweezy !!!!
  23. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 22, 2009 -> 05:02 PM) Strong willed kids are TOTALLY different then compliant kids. You can't generically say one things works and another doesn't because every kid is different. I do my damndest to keep my oldest in line, but if she's going to act like an ass in public, frankly, there's not a damn thing I can do about it, and anyone that says "that kid's a spoiled brat" or "those parents must be idiots" - I have two words for you. f*** off. You don't know me or my child, so please don't pass judgement on things you don't know. I HATE it when my kid acts up, and I remove her from the situation, but the scene has been already created. It drives me crazy for people to pass judgement on situations like this. /soapbox Yes, even within the same family, every kid will be different, and what works with one is not guaranteed to work with another. I am careful not to come off to my kids as passing judgment on their friends or friends' parents as individuals; that can create its own bad precedent and problems. However, when a kid is acting bratty in public, I see no problem in pointing that out to my kids as an example of how not to act, if they don't want to get in trouble. I know bad behavior when I see it, and I want my kids to know it too. However, I agree that a glimpse of such behavior doesn't qualify me (or them or anyone else) to pass judgment on a person's overall character or upbringing. That's bad behavior in its own right.
