  1. QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 24, 2009 -> 11:02 PM) It might actually be better. Don't know how, but that's what the stats say. Ok, here's where I think the grey area is: Yes, Crede's stats were good for 2009...... but he only played in 90 games. I'd rather have someone who can play 150 games or so and not have to worry about constant DL stints.
  2. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 24, 2009 -> 09:49 PM) Crede's glove has never been in question. I have no clue what the hell Southsidedon is talking about. Saying Mark Teahen is a better defensive 3B than Joe Crede is like saying Scott Podsednik's OF defense is superior than that of Franklin Gutierrez. The only reason why I said Crede was a downgrade over Teahen is because of Crede's propensity of getting hurt. One awkward movement, Crede's back is messed up. If anyone hurt their back, they know how much it can affect your range. For that reason alone, I'd rather not have Crede back no matter what. Crede's defense is no longer as stellar as is was in 2005, either.
  3. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 08:11 PM) Are we really going to scoff at him for being the only good pitcher in 2007? How is that to his detriment? He did his job the team didn't. I don't think a franschise with our tenous history with pitching can really afford to look down on: 33 Starts per year, 200 + K's and innings with an era of around 4 in a hitters park. With years like 2006 29 CHW AL 11 12 .478 4.84 33 32 0 1 0 0 202.2 206 116 109 23 56 2 184 15 0 7 872 98 1.293 9.1 1.0 2.5 8.2 3.29 2007 30 CHW AL 15 8 .652 3.74 32 32 0 2 0 0 216.2 197 95 90 29 50 2 213 7 0 5 882 126 1.140 8.2 1.2 2.1 8.8 4.26 2008 31 CHW AL 12 16 .429 4.67 33 33 0 1 0 0 208.1 214 113 108 25 61 2 200 6 0 2 890 98 1.320 9.2 1.1 2.6 8.6 3.28 I never said he was a superb pitcher, i've said multiple times that i'm glad he's gone, that he couldn't perform in the stretch run, that he's homer-prone, but to argue that he did nothing for this team is absolute bull. It reeks of a flawed mentality that a guy should take a permanent hit for a small sample size. You said he performed in 2007 when the team didn't. Well in 2008, he didn't perform when the team did, and that hurt us the most because we lost momentum in the playoff series against Tampa after he botched the first game. I predict Javy will have an ERA of 4.60 with his usual 200 k's.
  4. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 07:30 AM) Why? Even if we signed him, Crede would be a defensive upgrade over Teahen at 3rd (for however many games he could last). Not to mention that he's not really much of a hitter. Crede would be a defensive downgrade over Teahen. He had a bunch of errors with the Sox in 2008 at a very alarming rate. He's just not the same player anymore and he no longer possess his gold glove-caliber defense capabilities. With such a bad back problem, I don't know why people doesn't realize this. At this point of Crede's career, his defense will start being worse than average because of his back, he's deteriorating. I'd prefer Teahen's defense over Crede's, and I'm not even a fan of Teahen.
  5. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Dec 21, 2009 -> 11:57 PM) I think I do all of the things listed. I finish my kids' puzzles after they've moved on, eat my food one item at a time, check my alarm several times before going to sleep - and then I can't figure out why it was turned off at some point during the night. I arrange bills in order in my wallet, put my shoes together by the front door when I take them off (my wife and kids leave their shoes throughout the house for me to trip over), check my pockets for wallet, keys, phone several times a day and always before I leave work for home. When I get home, these items are placed in a hat that I have on my kitchen counter. If I can't find them there later, someone has been in my stuff - though nobody ever admits to it. I've never weaved a basket, but I'm sure if I did, I wouldn't stop until the job was done. I may be nuts. Lol, I've taken my dad's habit of leaving my keys, wallet, and change in whatever pants I was wearing earlier in the day. For some reason, instead of emptying my pants' pockets at the end of the day, I just take my pants off, and leave them on the floor of my bedroom with everything left in the pockets intact. At least my dad was a little neater by hanging his pants on a hook. :-p I just leave mines on the floor near the hamper. :-p Also, I always have my wallet, change, and random papers in my front left pocket, my car keys, pens, and coin pouch with my poker card guards in my front right pocket, and I have a cell phone holster on my belt on my right hip. I actually never ever put anything in my back pockets. I don't know how guys can sit with their wallet in their back pocket. o_O Oh, as for the money in my wallet, I have them all organized from biggest to smallest from left to right (I'm left handed), but I don't pay any attention to which direction each bill is facing, though.
  6. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 04:12 PM) I am very excited about Season 6, but it's going to be a little bitter sweet. A group of my friends do LOST season premier and finale parties... but sadly one of them unexpectedly died on Monday, so... it just wont be the same on Feb 2nd. My deepest sympathies, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.
  7. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 23, 2009 -> 12:27 AM) Here's how I rank my top 3 Rotations in the MLB, the White Sox, Red Sox, and Yankees. Peavy = Sabathia = Beckett: Dead even, they all are good pitchers. Lester > Buehrle >>> Burnett: Lester is better than Buehrle, but every now and then Buehrle likes to over achieve for his stuff and start dominating. Thats why I have Lester as better, but Buehrle can be better. Burnett isn't close to either. Floyd > Lackey >>> Pettitte: Floyd has more upside than Lackey, who was overpaid, and had a phenomenal stretch last year. Don't know how much Pettitte has left in the tank. Danks >> Vazquez > Daisuke: Javy's good, but Danks is better (and it's been beaten to death, but he can step it up at times). I think Daisuke may be closer to last year than this year... Garcia/Hudson = Wakefield/Bucholz >>> Joba/Hughes. Freddy is better than Wakefield, and Bucholz, while very good, I think isn't a world better than Hudson. Both 5's & 6's are better than Yankees. Great post!
  8. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 10:57 PM) How does Floyd > or = Lester? Lester is a BIG step ahead in my opinion, and the best SP Boston has. I just can't help but think Lester just had a career year and that it's over-exaggerated because he plays on an east coast team.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 10:12 PM) If everyone stays healthy, look at the top 3 in the Red Sox rotation now. Beckett, Lester, Lackey. Lackey doesn't need to be a #1, but they have 2 really good #2 starters behind Beckett. Matsuzaka fits in spot #4, which could be pretty good for a number 4. Lackey/Lester being a #3 is really where that rotation could shine. Who would you take for a full season, Lackey/Lester or Burnett/Pettitte, for example? The back end of their rotation could be solid or it could be a surprising weakness, but that top 3 should be really good. But...I'm not sure I call it the best in baseball. I actually think Boston's rotation looks very similar to the White Sox rotation, it's almost a deadheat: Peavy=Beckett Buehrle Floyd>or=Lester Danks>Matsuzaka Garcia=Wakefield
  10. This is how I see it if Buehrle is the #1 starter: Buehrle Peavy>Burnett Floyd>Pettitte Danks>Vazquez Garcia=Chamberlain/Hughes Sox looks better to me there. Or... if Peavy is the #1 starter: Peavy=Sabathia Buehrle>or=Burnett Floyd>Pettitte Danks>Vazquez Garcia=Chamberlain/Hughes Seems closer, but I still give the edge to the White Sox.
  11. I'll be honest, I always thought LaRoche was a little overrated. I don't really see anything special about him, and I don't really see him as a power-hitter. I actually prefer having Thome back instead of LaRoche, and I'm really against having Thome back. And like others have mentioned, I also prefer having Aubrey Huff as well.
  12. QUOTE (GREEDY @ Dec 21, 2009 -> 11:57 AM) I guess the main point I would like taken from my post is that Rios' strengths are: #1 A good defensive CF with pop. #2 A great defensive RF. So either pair him with with two mashers in the corners, or a good defensive CF, not a speedy coner outfielder. It seems like Kenny Williams in wasting Rios' strengths and that could not have been the plan. 3. can hit lots of doubles. 4. can steal bases. 5. not only can he steal bases, but he can also get about 20 home runs along with at least 20 stolen bases and be in the 20/20 club with guys like Granderson and Sizemore. 6. should be a solid batter in the #2, 6, or 7 spots in the order. Also, now that we got Pierre, it's gonna be awesome watching Pierre steal bases, then have Rios on base a few batters later threatening to do the same. Having 2 guys like that is better than having just Pods.
  13. I cannot sleep at night unless my bedroom door is closed and locked. I also always put salt and pepper on my food before I take a bite. A lot of times discretely "pat" the outside of my pocket to make sure my wallet is still there. I always have a phobia of losing it.
  14. I like the Dolsi acquistion. I think he has a lot of potential, and I just realized that he seems to be the "poor man's Arredondo".
  15. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 03:07 PM) Is this a political forum now or still a baseball forum? Threads like this are one reason I hope the Sox stay away from the likes of Delgado. Actually, I began and ended my last post by mentioning Delgado, so it's still a baseball thread
  16. QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 02:36 PM) What is "intellectual" about refusing to stand to honor America during the 7th inning stretch? I interpret that as selfishness and a lack of respect for rules at the workplace, which aren't exactly traits that I want to pass on to my children. I actually like Delgado for refusing to stand for the 7th inning stretch. I think it's borderline brainwashing to have everyone stand up and "honor" our country in a forcibly-obligative manner. I actually refused to stand up for the Pledge of Alligience all throughout high school and middle school because I just didn't believe in it. I think forcing kids to say the Pledge in schools is similar to various activities kids had to do under Hitler Youth. People should not think that having a dissenting stance on our country is a bad thing. In fact, having a dissenting and nonconformist stance on our country is more patriotic than having the stance of someone who mindlessly chant "Go USA" and stand for every pledge and "God Bless USA" song like a brainwashed zombie. I wish more people was like Delgado.
  17. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 02:14 PM) I think Joe Crede would be a great pick up, but then that's just me Oh god, c'mon dude! You're such a Crede fanboi. Crede's career is more than likely over, and we shouldn't want someone with such a fragile back on the White Sox.
  18. QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 09:54 PM) Well, as I said, I tend to agree with you, but how can you say for sure that Vizquel and Kotsay and Putz really are going to give you more than a few league-minimum type guys? And even if they did, you can definitely argue that getting a fewer high-profile guys who would be getting most of the playing time would have a far greater impact than some lesser role players who would be getting very little playing time. I think the crux of the disapproval here is that many of the moves Kenny has made are moves a team like the Yankees or Red Sox make to shore up holes in their roster, after they have already addressed all their key needs. A lot of people think Kenny made these moves in lieu of actually addressing his key needs. I think KHP even stated that Kenny has approached things backwards, which is a pretty accurate way of looking at things. Hey one point to point out... I know Kenny is probably more than likely to not sign any of the big-name free agents out there, but maybe the reason why Kenny approached things backwards is so he can make the team more attractive to a potential free agent he has his eyes on. It's totally possible. I mean, look at it this way, if Kenny went to the big-name free agent first and the free agent sees the team has a bunch of guys like Josh Fields, Chris Getz, a hole at left field, and a bench filled with only Kotsay so far, then the free agent might think, "Eh... no thank you." if he thinks the team is not built to win. However, by going backwards by filling the roster with upgrades such as a leftfielder who can leadoff and has the numbers proving he can bunt and steal bases in Pierre, a former closer who was solid before injuries caught up to him in the set-up role in Putz, a bench consisting of solid veterans with winning track records such as Vizquel, Kotsay, and Jones; and Jones still has the ability to hit 20 homers as indicated last year. And by going "backwards" Kenny made the team much more attractive as a potential winning team to free agents who wants to sign with a team that will win now rather than just a team that will pay the most money. And doing this allows Kenny to use money to fill other holes before approaching a big-name free agent. Because if he approached a big-name free agent first and signed him to a big contract, then he'll have less money to fill other holes and we'd be stuck with scrubs like Fields and Lillibridge again. But by filling the other holes first with proven veterans with track records, Kenny puts himself in a postion of offering a contract to a potential big-name free agent for less money and saying something to him like "This is all we can afford to pay you, but our team is already built to win, you can accept less money to be with us than another club if you want to have a chance to be on a winning ballclub. Deal or no deal." If this is what Kenny's strategy is,... then he is a freaking genius.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 20, 2009 -> 09:52 AM) Oh i looked it up too. Good use of a little used word. but it was sitting there on a tee, so I had to see if I could at least leg out a double it seems like fungible is a fungible word.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 19, 2009 -> 09:34 AM) It wasn't even a failure. Its well known that part of what Coop preaches is taking a few ticks of speed, in order to get better consistency in delivery and location. Its part of his philosophy. so any uptick in velocity going elsewhere is simply indicative of a different style. Yea, one perfect example is Nick Masset. Coop convinced Masset to taking a few mph off his pitches in order to get better control, yet when we trade Masset to the Reds he starts throwing 100mph again and puts up better stats. Sometimes I think Coop should come up with catered plans for individual pitcher instead of having everyone follow the same philosophy.
  21. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 18, 2009 -> 03:21 PM) Are we even trying? Man, this sucks. But I do think that once the Sox no longer have some big contracts, such as after Konerko leaves next season, that we'll start seeing the Sox taking advantage of cheap free agents. ....but then we'll still be paying a lot of money to Peavy and Rios. :-/
  22. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 02:12 AM) I'm guessing that one of Nix, Lillibridge, or De Aza doesn't make it to the new year on the 40 man. I honestly hope we get rid of Lillibridge somehow. Honestly, the guy instills no confidence in me. I actually felt more confident in having Wise in the lineup than Lillibridge. :-/ Hopefully we can trade him to another team looking for a late-inning defensive replacement/pinch runner/bat boy.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 01:07 AM) I'm not at all crazy about the light hitting Pierre. It makes me feel better about seeing Teahen out there compared to Pierre. I actually feel the complete opposite. I feel excited to have Pierre, but I'm feeling disappointed in having Teahen. I just can't help but think Pierre will have a lot of spark-plug moments at the top of the line-up, and wreaking havoc on the bases like he did for the Marlins in 2003, but I also can't help but think Teahen is going to be nothing more than another #9 hitter who hits worse than Uribe. I'd actually rather have Uribe than Teahen...
  24. I think the bullpen will be something like this: Closer: Jenks Set-up: Thornton Set-up: Putz MR: Pena MR: Linebrink LOOGY: Williams Long-relief: Torres I think Hudson should be in AAA getting full-time starts every 5 days so that he can be on a routine and waiting in the wings in case something happens to Garcia in the rotation. I also wouldn't mind upgrading Williams with a better left-handed reliever, and bump Linebrink down another spot.
  25. QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:14 PM) He have like 4 guys that can play CF. As for backup infielder, that is clearly Nix. This is our current roster. For the starters, I listed where they are predicted to start first and then the other positions they can play. 1. Konerko 1B 2. Beckham 2B/SS/3B 3. Ramirez SS/2B 4. Teahen 3B/2B/RF/LF 5. Pierre LF/CF 6. Rios CF/RF 7. Quentin RF/LF 8. Jones All OF 9. Kotsay All OF/1B 10. Nix 2B/SS/3B 11. Vizquel 2B/SS/3B 12. DH yet to sign 13. Pierzynski C 14. Backup C yet to sign (or Flowers, whatever they decide) Then you have the 5 starters and a bullpen of Jenks, Thornton, Putz, Linebrink, Pena, and Hudson. 14+5+6=25 Note: Williams should be no where near this team. Darn it! You beat me to it. :'( ...
