  1. I even booed Crede when he was still with the White Sox. He infuriated the hell out of me by waiting a year too late to get sugery, sticking with Boras, having a "money first" attitude, and committing so many errors last year while fanbois still thought he was great. Ugh, I pretty much hate the guy.
  2. I'd probably use "Minority" by Green Day with an emphasis on these lyrics: "I wanna be the minority, I don't need your authority, Down with the moral majority, 'Cause I wanna be the minority" The reason why I pick this song is because I can see myself being ejected from games a lot for arguing with the umpires.
  3. For me, I don't find any books or magazines helpful because most of the leagues I play in are 20-team leagues where 500 players are drafted. Too many magazines and books out there are only good for 12-team leagues.
  4. Attention: the FDBL will be cancelled this season due to low interest. It will be attempted next season instead. The GSBL currently has 15 players signed up, still has 5 open slots. The SZBL currently has 12 players signed up, still has 8 open slots. If anyone is interested in joining the SZBL or the GSBL, send me a PM. They're both 20-team leagues.
  5. Hey everyone, I'm very interested in joining a league with Soxtalk people. I've been playing since 2003, I prefer head-to-head play and simple 5x5 scoring. Also, if possible, I'd love to join a 20-team league, I'm a 20-team expert and I can't get enough of it. Please let me know if any openings are available, send me a PM or whatever.
  6. Lemme see if I can make any sense with this post: I noticed the other day when I think of White Sox players, that I usually equate them with a certain jersey. As in, I seem to remember a player most in one jersey instead of another. Does anyone else have this sort of visualistic problem? For example, if I were to get a Danks jersey, I would only get the white jersey, because most of my memories of Danks is in the white jersey. Get what I'm saying? Here's a brief run-down of past and present white sox players and the jersey I remember them best in: John Danks: white Paul Konerko: white Juan Uribe: white Carl Everett: black Jermaine Dye: black Frank Thomas: white Carlos Quentin: black Freddy Garcia: grey Gavin Floyd: white Jose Contreras: black Carlos Lee: grey Bobby Jenks: white Damaso Marte: black Neil Cotts: black Josh Fields: white Orlando Hernandez: black Tadahito Iguchi: white Mike LaValier: white Dustin Hermanson: black Joe Crede: grey Aaron Rowand: white AJ Pierzynski: white Anyone else have this same dillemma? Which color jersey do you best remember some players in?
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 02:51 PM) I never understood this sort of thing. Why wear a shirt making fun of some other team, when you could wear one that roots for your own? Because my hatred for Cubdom is so intense, that jabbing at the agony of Cubs fans after a demoralizing defeat just feels sweet.
  8. I'm ready to make life miserable for friends of mine who are fans of the Cubs. ...I got my first "L" t-shirt today.
  9. Morneau looks almost like an Aryan Skinhead in that pic. He'd probably fit right in with the Aryan Brotherhood if he ever got sent to prison. All he'd need would be a bunch of aryan tattoos and a shaved head. Watch out for Morneau, guys, or he'll shank you.
  10. QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 02:07 PM) Baseball is not a feasable sport for small/medium market expansion. Otherwise, Indianapolis and Charlotte would already have franchises. Hmmmm, isn't the size of the markets in Milwaukee and Denver about the same size as Indianopolis nd Charlotte?
  11. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 03:25 AM) No thanks, Jermaine is an awful defensive player, I'd look to fill the role with a David Eckstein or Nick Punto type. Someone who can slap at the ball and make lots of outs. LMAO!!! I know you're taking a shot at me, well played. Anyway, even if Dye ended up being moved to DH, he would still be able to play a couple games at RF if they needed him to. He can even play 1B if needed as well. Unlike some other DH players out there. *cough-Thome-cough*
  12. Wow, that was an interesting article, I've always been fascinated by Atlantis, too bad it wasn't the real thing. Am I the only person that think it's possible that Atlantis is now completely under ice and is currently what we now know as Antarctica? I've always suspected that Atlantis was shifted because of the tectonic plates and ended up at the south pole.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 20, 2009 -> 12:33 PM) One of (in order of my guessed probability): Chris Stewart (may be washed up though, spring will tell) Cole Armstrong (seems to have come into his own lately, but hits lefties poorly, bad match for AJ's backup) Corky Miller (great defense, no bat whatsoever) Donny Lucy (best choice if he was healthy, but, no telling how bad his knee injury was or where he is at now) Tyler Flowers (probably not ready yet) Ugh, that's such an ugly list. I can't help but think that Corky Miller will suck as bad as Paul Bako. I'm probably the most interested in seeing what Stewart can do, and I also think Flowers might need a little more seasoning in the minors. As for Lucy, please no. Armstrong? I probably rank Armstrong above Lucy and Miller.
  14. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 20, 2009 -> 12:49 PM) DIE-on Vee-cee-AY-doh edit: I know the question was for Cubano but Spanish is Spanish. Sweet, that's how I've been trying to pronounce it.
  15. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Feb 20, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) Hey Cubano, how do you pronounce Dayan's name? is it..."DIE-yawn" "vi-SHEN-do"? I REALLY hope I haven't been mispronouncing his name. If I have been, then I'm embarrassed.
  16. QUOTE (YASNY @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 11:11 PM) How can a DH be a defensive liability? Lol, how come I gotta clarify everything I say? If a player wasn't a defensive liability on the field, like Thome was when he tried playing 1st base in interleague games, then they wouldn't be relegated to only being used as a DH, now would they?
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 08:42 PM) This is one of the most worthless posts I have read on here in quite some time (outside of the filibuster.) I know it's your opinion and you're entitled... but ouch, you (IMO) have not a clue if you really think this. Lol, I'm sorry, but I'll be honest, it takes more than just monster home run jacks to impress me. I like baseball players that can contribute defensively on the field as well as offensively. It's funny, but I also don't like how the NL has pitchers batting, so I'm at a big personal impasse between how the NL has pitchers batting and how most AL teams utilize slow defensive liabilites as DH's.
  18. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) Because that's completely idiotic. The DH position was created for older players to continue in their careers. LAA didn't use the DH spot like you mentioned as Vlad, Anderson, Hunter, and Matthews are not speedy slap hitters. They had to rotate those guys because they put themselves in that position with that dumbass contract they gave Matthews Jr, and then signing Hunter to a huge deal. If Ty Wiggington is capable of playing so many positions? Why in the world would you waste him at the DH spot? The DH is for players who can NOT play more than 1 position in the field. You've managed to contradict yourself twice in the same post. How did I contradict myself??? Nowhere did I contradict myself. As for last year's Angels outfield, you nailed it right on the head, that was the word: ROTATION. I believe that the DH should be utilized as a rotating position for fielders. And again: having a player on the roster who cannot play on the field and can only play as DH is completely wasteful of a spot on the 25-man roster.
  19. QUOTE (qwerty @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) Something this silly could have only been said to bait people. I am rather depressed in myself actually... You do not know the purpose behind the dh i take it? I know the purpose behind the DH, I just don't agree with the way it's implemented. If a player is too old to play the field, then they should just go ahead and retire.
  20. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 04:39 PM) The Designated Hitters for the last 18 American League Champions: 2008: Cliff Floyd, 35, Defensive Ability: Zero 2007: David Ortiz, 31, Defensive Ability: Zero 2006: Marcus Thames, 29, Defensive Ability: Very little 2005: Carl Everett, 34, Defensive Ability: Very little 2004: David Ortiz, 28, Defensive Ability: Zero 2003: Jason Giambi, 32, Defensive Ability: Very little I'm not going to get into every single player, but here's how I think the 5 most recent American League champions' DH players' value are compared to Thome: Thome Thome Thome Thome = David Ortiz (Both useless, neither can play on the field anymore) Thome
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 04:03 PM) Why would you want a player who can play multiple positions as a DH? That ruins the purpose of the DH, because you lose that versatility the second you pencil him in as the DH. I also despise speedy slap hitters because it still takes two hits to score them. I'd much rather have the guy who can drive himself in with one hit than the guy who needs 3 hits to score 1 run. *sighs* You still don't get it. Here's an example scenario: Lets assume the Sox had Ty Wigginton for the 2009 season instead of Thome, and lets assume Thome's no longer with the Sox and that Wigginton can play 1B, 2B, and 3B: Game 101: (normal positions) 1B: Konerko 2B: Getz (assuming Getz won ST battle) 3B: Fields DH: Wigginton Game 102: (Konerko tires) 1B: Wigginton 2B: Getz 3B: Fields DH: Konerko Game 103: (back to normal as game 101) Game 104: (Getz gets a break) 1B: Konerko 2B: Wigginton 3B: Fields DH: Getz Game 105: (Fields gets a break to stay fresh) 1B: Konerko 2B Getz 3B: Wigginton DH: Fields Game 106: (back to normal as game 101) THAT's exactly how the DH spot should be used, with a player that can give other players a day off from the field. I don't know why it seems like no one gets it. Having a player like Thome takes away valuable flexibility. I'd probably rather still have Swisher than Thome, to be honest, only because Swisher can play 1B/RF/LF/and a little CF.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:21 AM) I thought about it, and it turns out you are wrong. Since he comes up to bat the same amount of times per game as every player in the field he couldnt possibly be called a pinch hitter. He is a DESIGNATED hitter which means his bat is what he contributes and a good power one at that. He may contribute a good power bat to the batting order, but all his contributions are negated because of his inability to play a position on the field. I'd rather have an aging player that can still play the field as a DH, even if it means they won't produce as much with their bat. Instead of Thome, I'd rather have a DH similar to Milton Bradley, Ty Wigginton, Adam Dunn, Rich Aurilia, Jerry Hairston Jr., and even Carl Everett, just to name a few. The player batting at DH doesn't have to be a flashy big bopper, what really matters is if they complete the team on the positional depth chart.
  23. QUOTE (Felix @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:11 AM) This coming from a guy who thinks an unproven 19-year old Cuban who has never seen major league pitching will at least top Frank Thomas in home runs. It's all beginning to make sense now. There is a big difference between making predictions on a rookie like Viceido and stating the obvious that a veteran Thome is no longer as valuable because he's unable to play a position. Plus, Viciedo might even be able to play as many as 3 positions: 3B, LF, 1B. Viciedo can even play DH at 19/20 years old while still having the ability to play positions on the field. To me, that's much more of a valuable commodity than having an aging player like Thome who can only play DH. Even Paul Konerko, despite being slower than Thome, is a more valuable commodity because he can still play 1B, which Thome can't do.
  24. QUOTE (hawksfan61 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:01 AM) LOL, glorified pinch hitter, are you serious? I would like to see all the pinch hitters in the league that can hit 34 home runs and have a .362 OBP playing full time. You can't have speedy slap hitters as your DH, Thome is the least of this team's problems. Why not have a speedy slap hitter as a DH? That's exactly what this team needs, someone that can slap the ball through the infield gaps for a base hit. The DH position should be utilized similar to how the Los Angeles Angels used it last year with their crowded outfield. I'd also much rather have a player that can actually still play on the field as a DH instead of a guy who gets sore playing 1B in interleague games like Thome does. I think a player like Ty Wigginton, a player that can play multiple positions, would be a perfect DH player.
  25. Good OBP or not, I'd rather not have a player who can no longer play a position on the field wasting a spot on the 25-man roster as DH. Thome's nothing more than a glorified pinch-hitter, if you think about it.
