  1. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 24, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) Apparently the entire organization disagrees with you, along with the vast majority of fans. I have no problem with being in the minority of opinions. I like Chris Getz, but when every reputable metric points to Jayson Nix being the better player, I can’t help but be swayed in one direction over the other. In the end, I don’t think either is the ideal option. Hell, I’d kill for CJ Retherford to win the job, but if defensive really is a priority for this team then Nix is your guy.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 24, 2009 -> 12:37 PM) You're being awfully generous - he was brutal at SS. Enough to make me feel stupid for suggesting he see extended time at SS earlier in the year. My point is that he never should have been playing SS or LF for that matter. Jayson Nix isn’t a utility man, he‘s a damn good second basemen. Chris Getz, however, has experienced some success all around the field in the minors. That’s where I think he belongs in the bigs. If he can be serviceable off the bench, all-around the field, I see value in him. Mostly, because I really like the mindset that he brings to the table, I don’t think he has the proper skill set to start for a team in the AL, but I really do think he’s the most fundamentally sound player (other than AJ) on this team.
  3. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 24, 2009 -> 12:18 PM) His defense wasn't flawless by any means at all, it was flashes of brilliance at times, and extremely erratic at others. He was still ten runs better then Chris Getz. He was shaky at SS, because he'd never played there before. Getz is the more worthy utility man, becasue Nix is the drastically better 2b.
  4. QUOTE (Molto @ Oct 24, 2009 -> 11:57 AM) Defensive specialist? Nix may be slightly better than Getz, but that doesn't make him anywhere near the defensive ability of Uribe or Anderson. And just as easily as you can talk about fans always complaining about the poor defense, you can also bring up fans complaining about all-or-nothing swings, which is what Nix is all about. Goes both ways. Nix is better then Getz on both offense and defense. Getz will hit for a better average, with less power and less of an ability to get on base. Getz was really, below-average last year, but hell he's a grinder so let's give him the benefit of the doubt. The double standard on expectations that some people have between Nix and Getz baffles me. Getz proves himself a hard-nosed player with limited offense and defense skills, and he's our future lead-off man. Nix hits a dozen homeruns, and plays great defense, and he needs to be begging for a job.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 24, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) um, I'm a fan of Nix's defense too (see my posts from this summer), but... Nix saved 3.1 runs on defense in 2008. It's a limited sample size, but that's really good. Furthermore, he was even better on defense this year. Hell, he was even better on offense this year. I'm not seeing the logic in anyone saying that he didn't improve.
  6. QUOTE (oldsox @ Oct 24, 2009 -> 09:49 AM) I actually think Nix played over his head offensively in 2009. I remember how overmatched he was in his two shots with the Rockies. 2009 might be as good as it gets for Nix. You do realize Nix played only 22 games, got only 65 PA's, was getting his 1st shot in the majors, and even then played nearly flawless defense, correct? He was then sent down to destroy AAA, and help lead Team USA.
  7. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 11:44 PM) I am not privy to everything that Swish does in his private life, nor what occurred in our clubhouse last season, but wow, I'm not sure I have ever seen a guy go from generally liked to completely reviled so quickly (and without anyone really knowing what he even did in the first place). I'm shocked at the sheer venom of some of the hatred directed towards Swish. He had one bad year, and suddenly he's a drug-abusing, son of a b****. i don't see the need to try to destroy someone who did little to deserve such hatred.
  8. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) Hughes just refused to listen to Posada. Tried to get too cute and should have definitely gone with the breaking ball again. Which is odd because Hughe's curve was supposed to be phenomenal when he was coming up in the minors. He's just another pitcher who fell in love with his fastball.
  9. Seriously, you have two runners on, and you bunt with Figgins? Figgins? Sure he's having a bad series, but the kid can hit.
  10. This team's slavish adherence to the bunt will be their downfall.
  11. Getz is yet to prove he has the skills of a leadoff man. His OPB trends suggest he will never get that close. Furthermore, with below-average defensive skills and no pop at all, he is far from an ideal option for an America League club competing in a home-run hitters park.. I'm yet to see why people thing Getz will be so good, must arguments suggest he'll turn into a radicaly different player.. I understand he's a smart guy, with great speed, but he's not much of a hitter and he's not much of a fielder. I'd let CJ Retherford compete for the job, and hope like hell, Nix can hit for a sustained batting average.
  12. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 08:55 PM) That's Peavy and Buerhle money and they are proven major league winners Furthermore, Chapman's performance in Cuba was far from flawless. He has great stuff, but he's very much a raw arm and even a bit of a project.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Man-Ram looked remarkably like a guy who could no longer use steroids as a crutch. FIXED
  14. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 08:24 PM) The man wants 10+ mil a year. There's no way he's in the bullpen. He 's not in the pen or the long-term. I'd give a spot start, here or there, but for this year his value lies in improving our pen and proving he can pitch in the big leagues. Hell, if he outpitches Huddy and Freddy he can have the 5th starter spot too, i don't think he'd be given the chance, nor do i think we'll end up signing him. I just think of him as a great talent, whose value for this year is getting the lay of the land and filling the Thornton as closer Void.
  15. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 06:14 PM) Is Chapman going to AAA? Is Garcia being sent to the bullpen? What about Hudson's future? The Sox really don't need another SP. I'd put Chapman in the pen for this year as our second lefty. I'd groom him, like Hudson, for a place in the rotation next year. I'd move on from there. I see no problem with having too many good options to choose from.
  16. Deadspin still produces solid commentary, but a lot of their site just pisses me off. They can't really control the environment they've created anymore, there's no need for the people in the comment section to take a cynical approach to EVERYTHING. "Hey, some dude died horribly? Time to make a bunch of puns!"
  17. Not the best source, but i find it credible. I love the kid's arm, if it's a worthy price you sign the deal. If not, you say, "hey, we have Peavy, Danks, Floyd, Buehrle, Hudson, Ely, and Brandon Hynick in our system. Let's move on with our lives."
  18. MLB Trade Rumours (not the most credible source on the planet) claims that the White Sox have expressed interest in the kid. No suprise here.
  19. IF Danks was able to turn on a Strasburg fastball (even for a single) his wrists are better then good.
  20. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) The fact that O-Dug and Brian Roberts are that low on the list saws a lot right there. Hell, Aaron Hill is a negative .8. There is nothing on that list that makes me think UZR is at all reliable. In fact, if anything else, it tells me that UZR is a joke. Either that or Hudson and Roberts had bad defensive years. As, players are prone to do.
  21. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Oct 22, 2009 -> 02:10 AM) This is a great move with lots of upside, he won't be a franchise player or anything, but he'll be a lot better than Mackowiak and Wise. Rob Mackoviak really wasn't that bad. He shouldn't of been playing CF, but he worked his ass of their anyway. I'd say there's little chance of De Aza being better then Rob. That's actually not that bad a thing anyway.
  22. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Oct 21, 2009 -> 04:36 PM) There must not be sh** else to do in ALL OF Connecticut. Fixed that for you. Trust me.
