  1. So, I was at the A’s-Tigers game today. Fantastic seats, right behind home plate. The Coliseum is an interesting structure, big block of concreate on the outside, very bare bones for the most part, but the actual playing field is monstrous and quite cool. The game was fantastic as Tomko managed to shut everyone but M-Cab down, and Porcello and a couple of the Tigers pitchers got their socks rocked off by what was essentially, the Sacramento River Cats. Also nice to see the A’s help the White Sox out.
  2. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 12:59 AM) I love Getz and he's the grinder you need on the team. Why do we need a grinder on this team? I'd prefer someone who plays plus-plus defense and can hit for power.
  3. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 12:12 AM) I'm not missing "El Profundo's" times at the plate. Well, it was easy to do. All you had to do was blink.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 17, 2009 -> 03:37 PM) Between Bill Hall and Chris Young, there are a couple of good lessons on why you should be careful about big contracts too early in a players career. Also, in investing in players who know how to take a pitch.
  5. Winston-Salem is probably our least interesting minor league team. I mean i enjoy following Morel and Loman, but they don't really offer any other form of excitement. I'd say Birmingham is my favorite to follow with Brisol, being something of a dark horse, bringing up the rear.
  6. QUOTE (beck72 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 10:54 PM) But some facts don't lie like hitting 40 points higher. Let’s say Chris Getz came back from injury tomorrow. He's walk onto the field gets 4 hits in 7 AB’s, each one of these hits is a single. In the other three AB’s he strikes out. He's now batting .571. Now, let’s say Jayson Nix comes to the plate. Goes 2-6 with a BB, but each of his two hits were home-runs. Jayson Nix is now batting .333. The 1st batter, Getz, is batting about 230 points above the other batter, but in this instance the second batter has driven in (at least) two more runs then the higher-average player. Thusly, it doesn’t really matter how many hits per ab’s you get, instead it matters how impactful the hits that you do get are. Furthermore, Nix’s real value lies in his glove. The offense, if any, is a happy surplus.
  7. QUOTE (beck72 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 10:06 PM) "Far superior defense" is a little vague. If Nix's defense was so superior to Getz, then Getz would be replaced in the field by Nix every time the sox had a late lead. The Sox staff know the strengths and weaknesses of both players far better than us. Getz isn't a liability in the field that people seem to think he is I think the sox can do better than Uribe reborn. I like Nix as a bench player, but not as a starter. This organization has started Ken Griffey Jr and Rob Macoviak in CF, defense has not been its priority since the Ozzie era began. Also, I continue to hear “Getz looks pretty good on defense to me,” but the numbers prove otherwise. This is an argument between stats and the eye test that goes far beyond the respective values of both Jayson Nix and Chris Getz. Regardless, Nix “looks very good to me” at second, the numbers back this up.
  8. Nice to see Flowers back in the lineup
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 08:08 PM) Yet you hold against Getz what he did the first 65 or so AB in his career. Nix is hitting .228. He's not very good. Nix is also pulling his own weight defensively, walking, hitting home-runs, and essentially doing everything, but hit for a high average which is a statistic that is pretty much meaningless given that he’s doing all of the aforementioned things. The numbers don’t lie. Nix is the better player, by a fairly wide margin. I don't care how many hits per AB's he has. I care what he does with the hits that he has.
  10. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 05:04 PM) Probably the most overrated TV show ever. Friends. /Thread.
  11. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 05:01 PM) WTF Sonix you have ESP? I'm 27. Nah, my computer wonked out and deleted the post, but if it helps Sonix look awesome, it was worth it.
  12. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 05:00 PM) You joke, but if you were here late in 2003 that statement would bring back quite the memories . Dateline: To Catch a Predator type memories?
  13. None of predators better prey on me… 19. 20 in a month.
  14. QUOTE (stretchstretch @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 04:42 PM) these are the games we need to go our way.... How about we let the games we're actually playing in go our way 1st?
  15. Nice f***ing work Aardsma. How's that straight heat working for you?
  16. Leave it to the best defensive CF to double-clutch on a play at the plate.
  17. Looks like Aaardsma going to have Thames, Raburn, and M-Cab in the bottom 9.
  18. Polanco up with two outs, two men on in the 8th.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) What? He appeared in 22 games. How can you possibly draw a meaningful conclusion from that? Exactly, Nix had 65 plate appearances at the major league level, and was sent down and then preceded to hit .303 in AAA with 17 homeruns and 51 RBI’s, thereafter he went on to contribute to the US Olympic team before having to drop out of the tournament after fouling a ball off his face.
  20. I have Jayson Nix as being worth about 9 more runs then Getz defensively. I’m sure there are people more adept at this sabermetrics stuff then me, can anyone check my math?
  21. Half of these statements that you guys are making about Chris Getz and his playing abilities aren't even remotely similar to the kind of player that Chris Getz is right now. The guy was a literal out-machine in the 1st half of the season, with occasional flashes of brilliance. What he has going for him is a grinder reputation. And personally, I'd prefer to interject another 20-25 homer guy into a softball lineup, then a straight singles hitters.
