  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 10:18 AM) Strikeouts are a huge problem in baseball and I'm glad the Sox are going away from it. I don't care what the statties want to say about a strikeout not being worse then a hit by ball...it is far less entertaining and makes the game slower. More strikeouts, mean less contact, means less plays / action as a whole. I completely disagree that they are a huge problem.
  2. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 15, 2017 -> 08:12 AM) After reading bleacher report article we should reread Grant Bizbee's sbnation article he wrote prior to the draft evaluating each teams draft. But really the Sox weren't really in a position to be bold. Teams in top 3 with a comp pick can be bold. This is a great point. It's tough to save too much at #11. That pick value was $4.2 million. I bet they sign Burger for like $3.4 or $3.5 million. Sheets and Gonzalez likely get full slot. The savings are going to Kincanon and Skoug.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 14, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) In the back of my mind I wonder if the Robert signing is forcing the team to try to save a few bucks in the draft by not picking the high dollar HS players, in general. No that's not the case. I don't really think they saved much. It's hard to do so when picking 11th. I would think Burger gets something like $3.4 million. That saves about $800K. I bet they use the savings throughout to sign Kincanon and Skoug for overslot. Hostetler mentioned that they were likely going HS in round 3 and that player got picked ahead of them. He said it happened a few other times too. He could obviously be lying but there's no reason to offer that up.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 11:32 AM) I missed that. Interesting. He said that he could likely handle Kannapolis but might need some seasoning initially in Great Falls. I bet he finishes the year in Kannapolis and begins next year at Winston Salem. Middle of 2019 trajectory.
  5. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 13, 2017 -> 07:17 AM) Here are some details on White Sox 2nd round selection Gavin Sheets http://www.chicagonow.com/future-sox/2017/...h-overall-pick/ Can someone pin this topic? I don't know how to do that. Thanks.

  7. I really don't see the Fulmer comparisons with Bukauskas other than stature. Fulmer didn't throw strikes in college. J.B. is a 20 year old Junior that has started in the ACC for 3 solid seasons. He has great stuff. I think he's more along the lines of Lance McCullers and Marcus Stroman than Fulmer. I'd be fine with that pick if the bats they like aren't on the board. I'd be down with them taking Evan White for a slight discount though and I'd definitely take Evan White over Pavin Smith.
  8. I'll say they end up with either Jeren Kendall or JB Bukauskas at #11 and Florida HS SS Chris Seise at #49.
  9. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 7, 2017 -> 09:05 PM) Another bad game for Burdi. He's nowhere near as ready as they thought He has a 2.19 FIP, a BABIP of .382 and is averaging 13.5 K/9. I think he'll be fine.
  10. I think Caulfield was actually arguing in favor of Rodon wasn't he?
  11. Nelson Acosta is the most well regarded pitcher on the Sox DSL team. Here's a tweet from raBBIt on him from last year. Brian Bilek‏ @BrianBilek_ Nelson Acosta went 6 innings with 10Ks and four hits for the #WhiteSox Dominican Summer League team. After today: 37/1 K/BB in 33 innings.
  12. Rodon's stuff was really good today and he looked healthy. Struck out the side in the 1st on 10 pitches. Very promising
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 6, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) Have you looked at the 2012 Cubs team? There are some pretty good players on that team. Maybe suggesting that they didn't full tank is incorrect, but they didn't have a good team regardless. They didn't gut their roster like the 1997 Marlins did or didn't have a team so devoid of talent that they couldn't win games like the 2003 Tigers. Frankly, your position regarding the draft position strengthens my argument. Where you end up really doesn't matter because the MLB draft is a crapshoot any way you slice it up. It's incredibly important to bring in the necessary talent, but that talent doesn't always work out. The best thing to do is to acquire as many young assets as you can and weed them out from there. Finally, if the Sox had taken Ian Happ instead of Carson Fulmer, I don't think you'd be asking that question. Happ went 1 pick after Fulmer. And it's not like the books is closed on Carson Fulmer yet either. I disagree with the premise that it doesn't matter where you pick. People that say that don't follow and understand how the draft works (In this thread, Greg is a prime example). Could Nick Hostetler draft someone at 8 that ends up as the best player in the draft? Sure. That's not really the point though. If you are going to be bad anyway and don't really have any long-term pieces playing on your major league roster, it's imperative to lose as many games as possible. The bonus pools are extremely important. The teams picking in the top 3 usually have around $12 million to spend (Note: Those teams receive competitive balance selections and Sox don't). The White Sox this year have $7, 921,400 to spend on the draft. If they pick in the top 5 next year, they'l likely have around $10 million to spend. It's a huge difference and it allows you to save money with some picks and add more quality throughout the draft. You want the highest picks possible because with those picks comes the ability to spend more money. I'm sorry, I don't give a s*** if Mike Pelfrey and Miguel Gonzalez get rocked every time they start. It doesn't matter. I'd like Anderson to do well. Abreu will be fine. I hope Q is good enough to bring back a solid return. The rest though? There aren't many guys on this team that matter and it's super important for them to pick really high next year. The good thing about this is Rick Hahn understands this to be true and you can always get worse.
  14. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 6, 2017 -> 08:54 AM) It's not about avoiding Boras for me, it's about selecting a guy with serious boom-bust potential in the first round who is unlikely to ever agree to an extension. I was 100% for selecting Rodon with the understanding we'd probably only control him for 6 1/2 years. He provided a rare mix of floor & ceiling and was hands down the BPA at his spot. The same can't be said about Kendall, who may have the loudest tools but also has some serious question marks. If he was hands down the BPA or we were talking about a 2nd round pick, I'd be fine with it. But when comparable overall talents should be available at #11, I'd rather avoid the Boras risk if possible. Will there be comparable talents on the board though? I don't believe there will be. Jake Burger and Evan White are significant steps down from Kendall ability wise. Austin Beck and Jordon Adell have similar issues and are further away.
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 6, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Isn't the "good/younger/healthy" Austin Jackson a pretty good comp for Kendall...? Kendall is left-handed and I think his arm is better. I really like the Ellsbury comp actually.
  16. Something like this with the first few picks would be ideal for me: #11: Jeren Kendall OF Vanderbilt #49: Chris Seise SS HS (FL) #87: Daniel Tillo LHP Iowa CC #117 Lincoln Henzman RHP Louisville (if they really want this guy, hopefully they'd wait until round 4 rather than 3).
  17. This is what Eric Longenhagen of fan graphs had to say in his mock draft: 11. Chicago AL – Jeren Kendall, CF, Vanderbilt If any of the three toolsy outfielders (Adell, Beck, Kendall) or UVA hitters are here, I think they’re the pick. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/fangraphs-2017-mock-draft/
  18. If the Sox take Jeren Kendall at #11, I hope they go High School at #49. Could be any number of options: RHP Steven Jennings, LHP Jacob Heatherly, RHP Hagen Danner, SS Chris Seise, SS Jeter Downs, 3B Mark Vientos, 3B Ryan Vilade, OF Drew Waters.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 4, 2017 -> 09:33 PM) Guys like Nate Jones and Addison Reed in the later rounds are the ideal...obviously, Hector Santiago, Petricka, etc. Kanhle was originally drafted by the Yankees in the 5th round. Swarzak was 2nd round, 61st pick by the Twins, for another example. Nate Jones was a 5th rounder and drafted as a starter. Reed was a 2nd round reliever. Petricka was a starter as well.
  20. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 4, 2017 -> 10:54 AM) Also Sox have had a former Phillies National Crosschecker join the scouting team solely as the national crosschecker for relief arms. Sox speculstely looking to grab Lincoln Henzman in the 3rd. Henzman's people think he's more of a 2nd rounder though. This is what MLBpipeline.com has to say about Lincoln Henzman. He's their #163 prospect. Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Cutter: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 50 | Overall: 45 Henzman overcame Tommy John surgery as a high school junior in 2013 to make an immediate impact as a freshman reliever at Louisville two years later. After an inconsistent 2016 season, he turned down the Mariners as a sophomore-eligible 31st-rounder and has taken over from White Sox first-rounder Zack Burdi as the Cardinals' closer. Henzman tied for the NCAA Division I lead with 16 saves entering the regional playoffs. When Henzman keeps his 90-95 mph fastball down in the zone, it's almost impossible for hitters to lift. His changeup has similar action, behaving like a splitter, and grades as a plus pitch at times. His cutter climbs into the upper 80s and is an effective third offering. Henzman blitzes the bottom of the strike zone and has permitted just one homer in three college seasons. He could move quickly through the Minors as a reliever, but he also had success as a starter in the Cape Cod League last summer and could get a shot in that role. He has enough pitches to work out of the rotation, though he'd have to prove he could maintain his velocity with a heavier workload.
  21. Sox could be 24-31 after today and 2-4 remainder of trip makes them 26-35. It's starting to go according to plan.
  22. I would hate that pick in round 3. I'm not a fan of drafting relievers. Didn't like the Burdi pick last year either though.
  23. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jun 4, 2017 -> 11:25 AM) Talking with some people to try and figure it out, but I think Sox take it very slow with Robert this year. Reasoning is not necessarily for his own development but with consideration of the tax ramifications of his bonus. Where he plays affects, which country, which state and how many days will affect how much he takes home. I've heard similar. I thought for sure he'd play for AZL or Great Falls to end this season though. The plan should be for him to start in Kannapolis next year and I don't think that happens if they spends rest of season in DSL.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 4, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) Going to need to beat "Luis Mieses" in my head when looking at DSL scores. 1/4 with an RBI for Luis. 1/2 with a double for Josue Guerrero. Where'd you get stats? milb.com?
  25. http://www.baseballamerica.com/statistics/...ankings/majors/ Sox are 2.5 games back of the #2 pick.....
