  1. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Feb 5, 2017 -> 08:51 PM) Because whether the trade happens in the next few weeks or at the deadline "soon" is vague enough to cover all basis for him. Doesn't exactly take a genius to know Q will be traded sooner or later. If he was really that confident he would have been more specific about the trade happening before the season. He said it would be before spring training and the WBC and that Rodon would be the story of camp. He's been consistently saying he's gone before the season starts.
  2. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) We have not had any indication that talks have advanced or that any deal for Quintana is close Offers have been exchanged, but neither the Pirates or Astros are blinking as of yet The Rangers rumor appeared to be a White Sox generated leak to stir the pot Nightengale said that Houston and White Sox are re-engaged on talks. Levine has been saying for weeks that Q goes before the season starts.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 01:59 PM) And that would be basically #30 draft slot money. Big deal. It's not like a top of the line guy is dropping. And then your pool is depleted for the 75th on down. Teams draft multiple guys in the top 10 picks for $100,000 or less and save $$ for after all the time, White Sox included. If a player drafted in the top 10 rounds doesn't sign, then the team loses the ability to spend that bonus money. It's a big reason why college seniors start getting drafted in rounds 8-10 and players drafted in rounds 11-19 make more than $100,000 to sign.
  4. QUOTE (ptatc @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 02:00 PM) The Bears have always been known for their poor healthcare. Always rank toward the top in medical lawsuits. It's been better since Michael Mccaskey is no longer in charge. I would wager he is behind this one. I just read more about it and Bernstein is talking about it now. It's not as egregious as it sounded. Multiple states are doing it or don't include professional athletes in the first place. It's about wage differential. You can earn wage differential for workman's comp issues through the age of 67. It was intended to benefit pipe fitters, bus drivers, etc. McCaskey's and the other 4 pro teams in Chicago are on board with getting the age changed to 35. Lawyers have been arguing that players should receive wage differential through the age of 67 even though they'd be retired long before then and winning by the letter of Illinois law. It's very specific.
  5. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 01:41 PM) It doesn't necessitate "deals" with their first and second round picks. If a team needs/chooses to overspend on pick 11, 49, or 75, savings can be gained by drafting the college seniors later. I think you are significantly underselling the flexibility that comes with a larger draft pool. Especially when the draft is absolutely where a rebuilding team needs to knock it out of the park. Exactly. Sox pick at #11 ($3, 998,900), #49 ($1,325, 800), #87 ($606, 100). If the Sox got the 75th pick ($730,800) and went over their bonus pool to the maximum allowed, they could sign a $2 million player at #49 if they want.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 01:26 PM) That would be if you underpay someone. The White Sox currently aren't in the position to look for "deals" with their first round and second round pick. They need to take the best player available. Those guys usually don't give discounts. The $800k would be used on that 75th pick. Screw that. Get someone who has some professional history. The way the draft is anymore, there is very little sliding due to signability. The $800k wouldn't make much of a difference. Your thought process is extremely short sighted. I completely disagree but I'm not going to argue it.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 01:07 PM) Don't live in Illinois so I don't follow this, but If I remember, a few years back, there was a lot of issues with the Saints when their owner was pushing some legislation that was anti-player? I don't remember how it ended, but there was a lot of bad press at the time. In Illinois, athletes can receive Workman's Comp benefits up until like age 67. This bill proposes for the benefits to stop at age 35. This would affect every team in town a lot in addition to minor league athletes that play in Illinois. It's disgusting and the McCaskey's should be ashamed of themselves in they are indeed pushing this. Ryan Pace, Theo Epstein, Rick Hahn, etc should be really angry about this.
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 12:36 PM) Regarless of if it could be traded or not, why would the 75th pick in the draft interest anyone? Get a player that has been developed and can be projected far more accurately. And I am all for Reed. His stock has fallen, he isn't even expected to make their team, but last year he would have been a headliner. He might bust, but the payoff could be as huge as he is. If the 4th piece is a Victor Diaz type, I'd rather give my scouting director the extra 800K and the 75th pick. That's something that allows you to potentially throw $1 million at a guy overslot during the draft.
  9. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 10:38 AM) Maybe not, but if a team takes him in the top 10, that's probably the production they are thinking when they get him. He's going top 10 for sure.
  10. QUOTE (pablo @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 10:26 AM) Yes but scouts were very split on Reed to begin with before he came up and critics point to last year as an "I told you so". Some thought he was a first division 1B and others thought nothing of him (which I realize can be said about any prospect). I am suprised by the 21-22% K numbers in the MiLB that another poster brought up so last year's 34% K-rate is likely to decline. I would hope Hahn could take advantage of his stock falling and get him as a 4th piece. The similarities to Rizzo are obvious but probably overstated. I can't remember what scouts said about him when he was coming up. Here's an old report from fan graphs on Reed prior to his call-up: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/projecting-...ugger-a-j-reed/ He was a top 30 prospect in baseball and raked in the minor leagues in some good hitters environments. Low A .936 OPS 174 wRC+ High A .911 OPS 141 wRC+ High A .1085 OPS 190 wRC+ AA .1000 OPS 168 wRC+ AAA .924 OPS 142 wRC+ 141 major league plate appearances: 3 homers, tons of strikeouts and .532 OPS.
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 09:45 AM) I think Cleveland is thinking very hard about bringing Watson home, I wouldn't be so sure about Garrett They can get Watson at #12. Garrett is clear #1. And if not, he'll go #2.
  12. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 09:41 AM) They have. They are both disruptive interior players. Allen - 6'3 290 lbs Donald - 6'0 280 lbs Not all that much difference. Allen a little bit more suited for 3-4 5T, but that stuff doesn't matter all that much. Mike Daniels plays 5T for Packers and he is same size as Donald. Allen has great pass rush ability. Last two years he had 22 sacks. That's why you are drafting him top 10. Now if you are worried about injury totally get that, but that is up to teams to figure out with doctors. Sorry, if we can compare Thomas to Watt, we can compare Allen and Donald. Even if you don't want to compare those two play style. The production Donald gives you is what teams expect out of Allen. I don't think Jonathan Allen is Aaron Donald in his very best dreams.
  13. QUOTE (oneofthemikes @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 09:41 AM) International Bonus Pool money can be traded, right? And the Astros were also just gifted $2M by the Cards. It can but $$ for this July 2nd can't be traded until that period starts on July 2. That $2 million gifted by the Cards is basically the value of the 2 picks they were given.
  14. QUOTE (shipps @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 08:34 AM) How do you feel about Garrett at 3? I'd run to the podium. Garrett is going #1 though.
  15. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 03:30 PM) People have compared Allen to Aaron Donald. No they haven't. At least they shouldn't. Donald is a 3 technique DT. Allen more of a 5 technique in a 34 front. He should be a good pro but I worry that he's about as good now as he'll ever be and the shoulder issues are scary. I think Solomon Thomas from Stanford is the best DL in the draft. He could be JJ Watt like at the next level. If they didn't go QB, he'd be my pick at #3.
  16. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Feb 3, 2017 -> 08:14 AM) I take it the Astros picks are tradeable? Only the 75th pick is which is in the Competitive Balance round following round 2. You would get the 75th selection and $800,000 more to spend on the draft pool.
  17. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/c...vival/97431050/ Wow. Jim Crain flat out saying they are trying to get Quintana. This is a good sign. Thanks, Bob.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 02:10 PM) Read my edited post...I think it shows where I was going with my initial question. I'm kidding man. Just frustrated with the entire org.
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 02:08 PM) I agree with you (ignoring coaching staff). I think we are the right superstar away from being in the picture of the best teams in the league (Curry would fit that bill) and a really good point guard away from being a top 3 seed in the East. I also agree that it doesn't mean we don't have other flaws that would have to get addressed though (and by no means is that like a "lock"). Well that settles it. The Bulls should keep Jimmy Butler and get Steph Curry. Problem solved.
  20. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 01:56 PM) To all the parents out there, if you teach your son one thing in life, make it how to throw a baseball left handed. That's a nice signing for Cleveland. Logan was good last year. He put up a 3.23 FIP pitching home games at Coors. He only allowed an .OPS of .477 vs LHH too. 11 K/9.
  21. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 12:43 PM) C - Soto >> Maile (Ramos is out at least until May and may not be able to catch) 1B - Abreu >>> Miller 2B - Lawrie > Franklin SS - Anderson = Duffy 3B - Frazier LF - Cabrera >> Rasmus CF - Tilson RF - Liriano DH - Garcia > Dickerson I think their lineup is worse. Probably the second worst in MLB behind the Padres. SP - Q = Archer SP - Rodon > Odorizzi SP - Shields SP - Gonzalez > Cobb SP - Holland >> Andriese I think the rotation is pretty much a wash. This is very generous. Avisail Garcia would dream of a .469 SLG with 24 homers. In no universe is Avisail Garcia a better player than Corey Dickerson is. The Sox bad players are worse than the Rays' but that's fine.
  22. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 12:42 PM) So anywho...anyone been watching IT lately? That dude is so damn fun to watch. Sure, he's an awful defender but he's not on my team so I don't give a damn. Do you know who could help make his defense not matter as much? Jimmy Butler
  23. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 12:36 PM) Exactly. Not every star is DeMarcus Cousins who is willing to stay in the NBA hellhole known as Sacramento based solely on money. There are various other aspects that impact these decisions and free agency/trades won't change. Which free agent next offseason is leaving his current situation to play with Jimmy Butler in Chicago?
  24. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 12:28 PM) You keep saying this but every time the NBA tries to make this happen, stars still leave. You ignore that there are advantages beyond money for these guys. Endorsements, exposure, weather, income taxes, playing style, championships, etc. all play a factor. I think it will affect some guys. It's not going to kill FA signings or trades. Which star player will leave their current team to come play with Jimmy Butler? Maybe Gordon Hayward. That move the needle for you?
  25. QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Feb 2, 2017 -> 12:30 PM) A HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE if that won't come to fruition for another 5 seasons. What's the rush? Butler is still under the Bull's control for 2 seasons. If they strike out in FA this summer, do this next year, or the year after. A 30 year old starting all-star butler is on par with a 28 year old starting all star Butler. He'll return the same value. Brooklyn's 2017 top 3 pick won't be available after next season though.
