  1. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 03:57 PM) Interesting to see what the strategy is whether you try to use all $4mil+ on 1 player, or divide it up into a few, etc. I would think it would be dispersed. Spending it all on 1 16 year old is pretty stupid. I really just hope that they acquire the extra $3.5 million to spend.
  2. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 04:05 PM) somebody remind me again why we get the same amount as the Cubs? Chicago market.
  3. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 03:46 PM) I wouldn't mind Valbuena as a signing. I think he can play 3b/DH so we can have days rotating lawrie/Saladino at 2b/3b, and rotate our OF with Garcia going to DH. Have Matt Davidson as a potential option as well
  4. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 02:33 PM) As one of the last holdovers, I want to point out, that the more I look at the free agent market, etc, the more open I become towards the idea of tanking. I don't think the Celtics alone can provide the package we want, but they are probably the best destination spot for a Buckets trade (not saying we need to do it now, although you could), mainly because if I moved Butler, I'd want lots of high picks plus young players with lots of time left on cheap contracts. I hate the idea of giving up Butler, cause he's so freaking good and so cheap, but if we got the right offer, I'd be 100% on board at this point. Boston has young assets: Crowder, Smart, Bradley, Jaylen Brown. They also have Nets 1st this year in a swap. Also have Brooklyn's #1 pick in 2018 and LAC and Memphis' 1st round picks in 2019. If Boston wants Jimmy Butler, they can absolutely get it done. They need to pony up though.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 02:21 PM) It will be so interesting when the first trade for int'l space goes down. I have to believe the first time it will be a pot sweetener because teams will be so unsure of value going in. Remember though, they can't trade for space until after July 2nd. There's a solid chance that the Sox have agreements with guys and don't officially get the $$ to sign immediately. They can acquire space from July 2nd until June 15th 2018 I believe. I agree with you though that it should be interesting.
  6. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 02:25 PM) The question is, do we sit out this summer and wait and see if Otani is coming over for sure or not in the winter? I haven't seen any confirmation that he is definitely coming. He's not coming under these rules. He can wait until he turns 25 and get paid $200 million. I believe Sox will be linked to players for this period. Probably already have agreements. Should start hearing about them in February. Under the new system, it also doesn't make sense to "sit out". Sox should spend their guaranteed $4.75 million every season and try to get up to $8.3 million total to spend.
  7. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 01:39 PM) As someone who isn't as up to date on the nuances of the international FA market, can someone give me a brief summary on the White Sox's position for the '17 signing period? Do they have their full allotted money? Is this expected to be a good class? Looking back I noticed a few teams went all in and signed prospects to bigger $ deals, is this something we could expect to see out of the Sox? I posted this a few weeks back: Here's the Baseball America (paywall) explanation from Ben Badler: http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...hyAyO7IBYWtT.97 Clubs either get $5.75, $5.25, or $4.75 million to spend on international prospects under 25 per year. Teams can trade all of their bonus amounts but can only acquire 75% of their bonus pool in trade. Here are the amounts. $5.75 million Arizona Baltimore Cleveland Colorado Kansas City Pittsburgh St. Louis San Diego $5.25 million Cincinnati Miami Milwaukee Minnesota Oakland Tampa Bay $4.75 million Atlanta Boston Chicago Cubs Chicago White Sox Detroit Houston LA Angels LA Dodgers NYM NYY Philly San Francisco Seattle Texas Toronto Washington Players that cost $10,000 or less don't count against the pool. The following teams can't spend over $300,000 on a player because they are in the penalty from previous years: Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Royals, Athletics, Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Nationals, Padres, and Reds. All of those teams can trade their full amounts however. The White Sox can trade for up to $3.5 million more in international money. This is absolutely something that they should be doing. White Sox can spend $8.3 million internationally if they trade for the maximum that they can. I'll be very curious to see if they do this.
  8. QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 09:08 AM) This only happens because Carlos Rodon was otherworldly as a sophomore and couldn't possibly live up to the expectations place on him. Sox were lucky to pick third that year. Damn lucky Miami was picking 2nd too. It's nice to pick #1 of course, but obviously. a lot can happen obviously. What's cool is the year the Sox should have their highest pick for a long time there (perhaps other than 2014) is such a big prospect in Beer up there. Aren't there multiple guys worthy in the 2018 draft? It's a good year to suck, right?
  9. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 08:03 AM) Sure, if we move Quitana & Frazier we might have a shot at challenging the Padres, but it doesn't seem likely we'll move Todd before the season. I think you're underestimating how bad the Padres will actually be next year. Sox are a bottom 5 team with Frazier IMO. Quintana is going. If he doesn't, this team traded their 2 best players and will continue to purge.
  10. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 18, 2017 -> 06:44 AM) Team is not nearly bad enough to get into the Beer mix as it stands today. It's about a 70 win team. Once Q and Frazier go, you are looking at 65 win territory. I expect other guys to move as season goes along. San Diego will be awful but Sox should be right in that top 5 mix. Seth Beer has 2 seasons still before he can even be drafted. People are going a little overboard. We have the 2017 draft, international period, trade deadline, and offseason before we even get to worry about Seth Beer. It's a bit ridiculous. You're also overrating current roster. This is a bad team that won't be able to score runs.
  11. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 03:24 PM) That's the status quo for the Score much of the time now. As it should be. Nobody cares about hockey and the Cubs are the best organization in town other than the Hawks and happen to play their games on that station. They will ramp up Bears draft coverage soon but what else are they supposed to talk about it?
  12. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) I'll bet the house the 49ers are still regretting passing on him. Lets just leave it at that. Some teams also drafted on need at that time, not BPA. Hell, some still do. They would have played him right away and he wouldn't have been anywhere near as good though. Rodgers needed a ton of mechanical work to turn into what he has.
  13. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 12:41 AM) Sox need another starting pitcher or two that can eat innings, abnd possibly a middle relief guy that can do that. They also need a decent Lefty set-up man to replace Zach Duke. I am going to be pulling for Tilson and Davidson to make the 25 man roster. I think bullpen is set: Robertson, Jones, Putnam, Petricka, Covey, Ynoa, Jennings, Soto as options.
  14. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 10:31 AM) Rick Hahn to Blame for Q market stalling out? This is from The Athletic, I don't have a subscription so I can't read anything past the first paragraph, but looks like potential blame shifting to RH taking too long to make a deal piece (basing that on context clues). It's not that. Solid article actually. Basically just said Hahn wrecked the market with his outstanding deals. Never blamed him.
  15. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/213616014/20...picid=151437456 It's crazy to see 3 White Sox on this list. Glasnow is 2 and Martes is 5 which is fun because Sox have been linked to both guys in Quintana talks.
  16. QUOTE (reiks12 @ Jan 17, 2017 -> 07:38 AM) Astros fans on Twitter are actually saying they would rather send their top prospects for Sonny Gray... What in the hell is wrong with them? I don't think Sonny Gray is available. A's would be stupid to sell low on him.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 15, 2017 -> 07:32 PM) It is a stab in the dark based on nothing other than a vague statement from months ago, but it isn't that hard to make a leap of faith here. I tried finding some information on this July 2 class, but there is nothing out there as of yet. Usually by early February, MLB.com releases their International Top 30. Badler soon after with a top 50.
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 15, 2017 -> 03:03 PM) Since it hasn't been addressed in this thread, let me just point out how absolutely ludicrous and overly complicated the international free agency rules are. I posted this on the FutureSox board awhile ago: Here's the Baseball America (paywall) explanation from Ben Badler: http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...hyAyO7IBYWtT.97 Clubs either get $5.75, $5.25, or $4.75 million to spend on international prospects under 25 per year. 19. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Jan 15, 2017 -> 12:26 PM) If the Sox really believe in this player they can go over the international signing bonus and suffer the consequences: All overages are taxed at 100 percent. Exceed bonus pool by 5 to 10 percent: Team is not allowed to sign a player for more than $500K in the following international signing period. Exceed by 10 to 15 percent: Team is not allowed to sign a player for more than $300K in the following international signing period. Exceed by more than 15 percent: Team is not allowed to sign a player for more than $300K in the following two international signing periods. The Sox need All Stars at almost every position to compete for a World Series championship. that is also why Hahn will not trade Q for a bunch of prospects who might make it to the big leagues as average players. Q is the only player left on the roster that might bring back a A+ position player prospect. So the best way to get additional potential All Star type players is from he Draft or from the International signing pool. I say go for it. Try to get this player. They can't though. Sox are rumored to be on guys for this July 2nd period. If they have deals made with those players then they can't over the previous year without reneging on those deals.
  20. QUOTE (spiderman @ Jan 15, 2017 -> 09:06 PM) It doesn't appear that Levine is even aware or "in the know" on whom the White Sox are in talks with other than re-reporting what has already been public knowledge. The only news in his column is that the White Sox want to move him before spring training (i.e. the White Sox have said there isn't any timetable in their pubic statements regarding any speculation). Levine was clearly told that teams are upping their offers. He's been at Cubs Convention felting players and coaches all weekend. He wouldn't have taken a break to write about Q unless he got something IMO.
  21. Weren't we waiting on ab numbers for Miguel Gonzalez and Zach Putnam?
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 13, 2017 -> 08:45 AM) Phillips seems like a solid hire. The only problem is he's a 3-4 guy, and they were a 4-3 team so there is going to have to be an adjustment, and he is 70 years old when the season starts. Will he stick around to see it through? He doesn't really run a traditional 3-4 front. He runs a 43 under front (3T (Donald) to the weak side, 1T (Brockers) to the strong side. Wade walks up his WLB in a standup position generally though. It should work out fine. Most teams are in nickel 70% of the time anyway.
  23. White Sox reached 1 year deals with Jake Petricka ($850,000) and Dan Jennings ($1.4 million)
  24. QUOTE (G&T @ Jan 12, 2017 -> 01:27 PM) Abbatocola not producing Bernstein and Goff. Interesting... Nick Shepkowski is the Executive Producer for Bernstein/Goff. I'm guessing Chris Tannehill as well.
