  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 16, 2016 -> 12:45 PM) As always, a great way to let less interesting discussion die is to not respond to it with your own uninteresting opinion. This is true. I just have no idea how any person thinks that they aren't in a fairly substantial rebuild. It's very obvious that they aren't done and they aren't going to turn around and buy. It keeps getting talked about though. I keep taking the bait though like an idiot because it's a stupid opinion.
  2. Is that when I joined? Touche if so.
  3. They have this bench and first thing we all do is blame the coach? Please. It's regular season NBA hoops. Once they get to playoffs, they'll have 2 of the best players on the floor. And they'll probably win a series. And then lose the next series just like we all thought heading into the season. Hoiberg isn't a great coach but blaming him for having s***ty players and draft picks that can't earn PT is pretty lazy.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 07:59 PM) I wouldn't mind if they stopped now and dumped all the players at the midseason mark if we suck. See how we do, then trade them all if we reek with our new manager. Give him a chance to win first. Right now we got rid of Sale and Eaton. Big deal. Two of the pitchers we acquired were IN THE BIG LEAGUES last season. They could join the rotation and "arguably" the rotation would be fringe playoff caliber RIGHT NOW as it has been for many seasons. We've added a MLB ready second baseman who is supposed to be a star. Yes, the loss of Eaton weakens an already lousy outfield, but maybe we could actually sign a GOOD free agent outfielder and get a catcher who is not a disgrace. No I wouldn't mind if we stopped now. I don't want to win 50 games next season. Greg, those guys are all going to the minor leagues.
  5. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 04:36 PM) Soo.. is Beer the second coming of Bryce Harper? What's all the hype about? No. Bryce Harper was a generational talent as a 16 year old. Seth Beer is very good and fun though. A lot can happen in 2 years of college baseball but he reminds me of Josh Hamilton crossed with Hunter Pence if that makes any sense.
  6. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 15, 2016 -> 08:05 PM) Great post. I can't believe our fans trust our front office to draft the right guy. We'll probably draft a pitcher who is Rodon-esque. I have nothing against Rodon, but... You must have a lot of money. You'll "have fun" rooting for a team down 4-0 in the second inning of a Holland or Shields start and 8-1 after 5? You are a helluva fan. I would puke in the scenario I've described after snarfing down a 6 dollar hot dog. Greg, with the way the White Sox operate, they are finally doing what puts them in the best place to sustain long-term success. They've been bad in years when they've gone for it and haven't reaped any of the benefits of rebuilding (spending a little more internationally, signing guys with the intent of flipping them, trading away valuable assets and sunk cost guys). The Sox have basically been seeing the results at the ML level of a team that is rebuilding without any benefit. Go away for 2 years. Complain about the draft and "prospects". But if they draft a player in 2018 that ends up being a franchise cornerstone I'm going to call you out when you root for that player.
  7. This is what Keith Law said: Nick: If you were Lunhow, would you trade Musgrove + Martes + Tucker for Quintana, and why or why not? I go back and forth as an Astros fan but think I’d be happy with him pulling the trigger. Klaw: If I’m Luhnow I do it. If I’m Hahn I’m not even countering because it’s so low. FWIW, I don’t know that that was ever discussed by the clubs.
  8. QUOTE (FT35 @ Dec 16, 2016 -> 07:47 AM) I just don't know...I've been burned before by trusting everything I hear...shoot, we were all convinced Sale was going to Washington--then things changed in a heartbeat. Our GM and owners comments only show what they are thinking at that moment...they are free to change course and HAVE in the past. All we're saying is that it's possible that they got more than they thought for Sale and Eaton and modified their course of action. The landscape of the organization is DRASTICALLY different than it was before those deals happened. It's realistic to think that there is some reevaluation happening--and a different course of action is being discussed. The thread wouldn't exist if there wasn't a little speculation that this could be the case. If nothing else, it's an interesting theory that many have enjoyed discussing. That's the point of these boards--(over analyze the crap out of our team!) try to think of everything...it's impossible for 1 person to be right about everything along the way--unless you're the great Dick Allen. No one posting in this thread would be the least bit surprised if Q, Abreu and or Jones were dealt, but until it happens...it's an interesting thought to think the plan has changed. This thread is a dumpster fire. It's not interesting. This website is much, much dumber than it used to be. Used to be my favorite place to go. Now I dread reading many of the threads. It's sad actually.
  9. The White Sox aren't forfeiting any draft picks. They want to trade everyone. How is this still not clear for people? If Rick Hahn had it his way, he would have made 4 more trades right now. They want to be terrible this year. And they should be.
  10. I thought the Thread Title said: Matt Purke Dead
  11. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 02:15 PM) I don't root for losses in baseball because the draft is too unusual. The picks rarely pan out so I'd rather compete for a wild card. Meh. The worse you are the more money you are allowed to spend in the draft. You want to pick as high in each round as possible if you're bad so you can get a larger bonus pool.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 01:01 PM) With the new caps, it really isn't going to work like that anymore. I mean they could spend over this year, but all of the best Latin American talent is signed, so pretty much it would have to come from Cuba or Asia. Who out there is worth signing now that is worth handicapping ourselves for the next two years? I can't think of anyone. Then factor in that when with the new caps, those dollars should buy a whole lot more players than it used to in the next July 2 class. On top of that, this the era the Sox need to be able to sign as many players as possible for each season to load up on talent, instead of punting on two full years worth of international talent in the middle of a rebuild. The new agreement starts for this next year's class on July 2nd. White Sox have $4.75 million to spend. They can acquire up to another $3.5 million to spend a total of $8.3 million. There are like 10 teams basically out which I documented earlier in the thread. In an interview with Brian last year, Paddy insinuated that they'd be signing a pretty big name pitcher internationally this year. None of the top 30 or anything has even been released yet.
  13. QUOTE (Dunt @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 01:26 PM) Apologize in advance for the dumb question, but I was hoping to gain some clarity on the service times of Giolito, Lopez, and Fulmer. Baseball reference has all 3 hitting free agency in 2023, is this accounting for them likely spending most of 2017 in the minors or would they gain extra control if they stayed down there until, say, September? I know Moncada's clock hasn't started yet since he was a September call up, but for these other guys, it would almost make more sense to leave them in the minors all season if it means more control, no? None of them will come up until around June. Their first year won't be until the 2017-2018 season. They will eligible for FA after 2022-2023 season. Think of it as part of this season and then 6 more years after.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 10:32 AM) So how does this work? There is another thread that pretty much states we should cheer for losses and the team to suck for the draft pick. So should we cheer for Holland to suck or be a Cy Young candidate? Seems to me, the #1 overall pick is worth more than some measly prospect a team may give you for 2 months of Derek Holland's services. Someone needs to start, Dick. He's a guy that could recoup some value and potentially get moved. You don't have to cheer for losses. Do whatever you'd like. Losing a f***load of games this year does get the franchise closer to a world series though. And that's always the goal.
  15. I've been rooting for losses during the 2nd half of the past 4 seasons. At least this season they will get some of the benefits of actually rebuilding.
  16. Adding the best talent overall is the best way to do this. I hope they continue to do so. When their 1st round pick comes around in June, if the best player is a RHP, they should take him.

  18. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:56 AM) Do they actually trade the funds or just he ability to spend the funds. I still do not see the White Sox spending any more money then they are comfortable with. They do not spend in free agency or internationally and will give nice contracts to players that give them a hometown discount. If this strategy is not changed I see no reason to believe they are going to spend the money doing things differently. This is similar to the Bears in that they spend enough to fulfill the criteria of spending but then short change the organization in other areas. Otani will end up the Yankees, Dodgers, cubs, Giants or Mariners. I disagree. Once they were given a draft pool to spend, they've chosen to spend the whole thing and even went over twice. The Sox will no doubt spend the entire $4.75 million they have for international prospects. They should acquire $3.5 million more though.
  19. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 14, 2016 -> 08:52 AM) Isn't the idea that teams will use some loophole - sign him for a modest amount, agree to DFA him after 1 year (or whatever it's called when you let a player go early in career, and he agrees to sign back for some predetermined massive amount? No idea but that's probably the only way around it and it will be heavily frowned upon if so.
  20. This is what I posted in the other thread regarding the new rules: Here's the Baseball America (paywall) explanation from Ben Badler: http://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...hyAyO7IBYWtT.97 Clubs either get $5.75, $5.25, or $4.75 million to spend on international prospects under 25 per year. Teams can trade all of their bonus amounts but can only acquire 75% of their bonus pool in trade. Here are the amounts. $5.75 million Arizona Baltimore Cleveland Colorado Kansas City Pittsburgh St. Louis San Diego $5.25 million Cincinnati Miami Milwaukee Minnesota Oakland Tampa Bay $4.75 million Atlanta Boston Chicago Cubs Chicago White Sox Detroit Houston LA Angels LA Dodgers NYM NYY Philly San Francisco Seattle Texas Toronto Washington Players that cost $10,000 or less don't count against the pool. The following teams can't spend over $300,000 on a player because they are in the penalty from previous years: Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Royals, Athletics, Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Nationals, Padres, and Reds. All of those teams can trade their full amounts however. The White Sox can trade for up to $3.5 million more in international money. This is absolutely something that they should be doing. White Sox can spend $8.3 million internationally if they trade for the maximum that they can. I'll be very curious to see if they do this.
  21. Guys, I explained all of this in a thread last week that I started in Future Sox thread. Feel free to have a look. If Otani comes next summer, the most $$ that he can possibly from anyone is like $10 million. The most that a big market team can pay is $8.3 million. That's it. Those are the rules. And that would be an entire bonus pool minus guys making less than $10,000.00
  22. Honestly, I'd take Jarlin Garcia and their competitive balance pick. That's like having an extra 2nd rounder. Sox would have 3 picks in the top 50.
  23. QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 03:52 PM) http://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/ml...e120496093.html At least one of the affiliates is already very happy with the new direction. The Charlotte lineup should have Yoan Moncada, Adam Engel, and Jacob May in it. The rotation will consist of Giolito, Lopez, and Fulmer with Clark and Burdi in the bullpen. Fun team.
  24. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 04:28 PM) Just saw the draft order for the competitive balance portion of the draft was released. Marlins can always throw in their pick to a deal. I would love this idea. Acquiring that pick from them would be great.
  25. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 13, 2016 -> 11:38 AM) Have any recent Texas Tech quarterbacks had success in the NFL? A bit cautions about some of these "scheme" QBs in college, where anyone steps in and dominates. No they haven't. They are usually noodle armed guys though. Mahomes is way different. He's raw and will need to sit but he has the biggest arm in the class.
