  1. QUOTE (shipps @ Oct 5, 2016 -> 08:51 AM) This is going to be a common theme with him throughout his career it seems. Meh. I don't really believe in the term injury prone. He overtrained and needed shin surgery. He got hit in the ankle while playing a violent, dangerous game and most likely has a high ankle sprain. We'll see him in the 2nd half of the season.
  2. I think if you really listen to what Rick has been saying lately, it seems like the rebuild is coming.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 01:54 PM) Which is a great illustration of why the only correct option for this team is rebuilding. The FA market will not fix this mess unless we win the lottery 3-4 times and find guys who dramatically overproduce their contracts. Otherwise, we are constantly trying to patch positions with guys who are "good enough" and then trying to acquire one big name player to overcome the fact that 4-5 positions in the lineup and a large chunk of the rotation and bullpen are filled with guys who are barely good enough. That's the "Rick Hahn Special" that we saw starting with Keppinger - "This guy is better than the complete vacant gap we have here and therefore that's a major upgrade". We've seen how well this works over and over and over again over the past 4 seasons. Either the big name isn't quite as big as we thought, or the guy who was supposed to be barely good enough does slightly worse and rapidly crosses over to terrible. Or both. I think they could rebuild and still sign Castro though. He's a benefit to our pitchers regardless.
  4. QUOTE (zisk @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 01:20 PM) Hostetler-my bad. he is now director of scouting and ran this years draft. I think we should all look back 3-4 years ago when Courtney Hawkins, carlos sanchez and tyler saladino were our top minor leaguers. the system now has some depth and another good draft could really go a long ways s toward sustained success without having to endure 2-4 more bad seasons. LDF?
  5. QUOTE (Dunt @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 10:41 AM) I guess one of my biggest questions for planning for the future is how they plan to implement Collins. Realistically, I'm pretty confident he will be on the major league team no later than 2018, so will he be taking over at C or DH? Both are areas of weakness, so replacements are needed, but it's much easier to have a plan on attack for this offseason if you can envision where the team plans to use him. The Sox can go 1 of 3 ways: Go For It -See if Shields bounces back in spring training next year, if not, DFA him. No competitive team can trot him out there every 5th day and hope to play in October. -Sign Jason Castro to a 2 yr contract. Excellent defensive metrics again this season, great framing statistics, poor to mediocre offense which could be offset by the addition of a big bat. -Sign one of Encarnacion or Cespedes. You need another big bat in the middle, Encarnacion is the better bat, but he's older and doesnt provide any defensive value. Plus, if the Sox see Collins as DH, it would make more sense to go Cespedes and move Melky to DH, so you can slide Collins in to replace him after he leaves. For the sake of this exercise, I will say they sign Cespedes. -I think Carlos Gomez gets more offers than expected, so I think it would be beneficial to look at a guy like Rasmus for CF. The offensive numbers weren't really there this season, but he is a plus defender in the OF and with Eaton and Cespedes maning the other 2 positions, the OF defense would be massively upgraded. If he doesn't work out, you can always try with Tilson while Engel gets more seasoning in AAA. -Start Burdi in AAA and bring him up in June or July to provide a shot in the arm to the pen SS Anderson RF Eaton 1B Abreu LF Cespedes DH Cabrera 3B Frazier CF Rasmus C Castro 2B Lawrie/Saladino BE Lawrie/Saladino BE Narvaez BE Tilson BE Davidson? SP Sale SP Quintana SP Rodon SP Gonzalez SP Fulmer/Shields CL Robertson SU Jones SU Petricka RP Jennings RP Putnam RP Fulmer/Shields RP Ynoa? RP ? Buy and Sell This is the route I ultimately think the franchise decides to go. I think Chris Sale's days with the White Sox are numbered and I think they will ultimately do pretty well in a trade for him. I think the team tries to capitalize off that one trade and compete while also planning for the future. -Trade Chris Sale to the Red Sox for Andrew Benintendi, Rafael Devers, Michael Kopech, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Blake Swihart. In this trade, the Sox get someone they covet for some reason in Swihart, they get a stud CF, the eventual replacement for Frazier, a young power arm, and a rotation piece for the present. Fills needs but also builds for the future. -Sign Edwin Encarnacion to offset the loss in pitching. I'd personally go somewhere around 4 yr, $92 million. -Sign Boone Logan as your second lefty in the pen. -Bring up Burdi and really make the bullpen a strength. Shorten the game for the starters and make the bullpen lock down. RF Eaton SS Benintendi 1B Abreu DH Encarnacion LF Cabera 3B Frazier C Swihart 2B Lawrie/Saladino SS Anderson BE Lawrie/Saladino BE Narvaez BE Tilson BE Davidson? SP Quintana SP Rodon SP Gonzalez SP Rodriguez SP Fulmer/Shields CL Robertson SU Jones SU Burdi RP Jennings RP Logan RP Putnam RP Petricka Rebuild This is the hardest to predict. If they start a massive rebuild, I look for Quintana to go to the Dodgers and Sale to go to the Red Sox. I think Frazier, Melky, and Robertson go at the deadline. Lawrie probably goes for a flier piece in the offseason. I love the effort. I don't think they'd give up the 12th pick in the draft to sign Encarnacion though. I just don't see them giving up a pick and I hope they don't.
  6. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Oct 4, 2016 -> 08:48 AM) And where do these "better players" come from? There aren't many good free agents. The few that are out there will be given ridiculously massive contracts from teams like the Red Sox, Dodgers, etc. This is why I want to rebuild. I don't think a Jason Castro, Lind/Alvarez, and Saunders/Rasmus/Gomez offseason is that much of a difference but I could see them doing it.
  7. Some are angry but I agree with Hahn that it doesn't make any sense to state a direction. I think they will shop Sale and Quintana. If they get what they are looking for, I think they move Sale and go from there. If the offers aren't there though, I could see something similar to last offseason but with better players added. I highly doubt they will be spending on a player with a QO attached though.
  8. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 2, 2016 -> 10:03 PM) Hoyer definitely does a better job reading defenses. I don't find him very accurate but he knows how to read a defense and make quicker decisions and avoid the rush much better than jay. Jay is more talented but we know what he is and while he will make more big plays and more things from nothing he will also make mistakes (Hoyer does too just not as frequently as jay) You must not have ever watched Hoyer after like week 9. He's a much different QB in the 2nd half of seasons for whatever reason. Do you remember how awful he was in the playoffs for Houston? Brian Hoyer is a solid backup QB that played pretty well yesterday
  9. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Oct 2, 2016 -> 10:17 AM) The #WhiteSox have one more meeting scheduled tonight with manager Robin Ventura, and unless Ventura changes his mind, he intends to resign. https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/782577304904097794 He isn't really resigning though. His contract is expiring.
  10. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Oct 1, 2016 -> 06:30 PM) http://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/white-s...-rick-renteria/ Well Don Cooper will be staying. I wonder if a new hitting coach will be hired and if there will be staff changes.
  11. Scott MerkinVerified account ‏@scottmerkin White Sox broadcast teams, both on radio and TV side, will be returning for the 2017 season
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 1, 2016 -> 04:55 PM) Does it have to be a major announcement? Can it just be a standard end of the season blah blah blah meeting with the press? Ventura is out of contract so I would say we get some clarity on Monday.
  13. It's got to be Ventura leaving and then announcing a managerial search. They'd just do a press release if Ventura were staying.
  14. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Oct 1, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) Dump Shields however possible (which means just paying him to go away) Retain M. Gonzalez Trade Q and Robertson to Boston for Travis Shaw, Eduardo Rodriguez, Rafael Devers, Luis Alexander Basabe, Michael Kopech, and Blake Swihart I think a trade like this works out great in our favor. There's no question in my mind that we need to trade at least 1 of Sale or Q to rebuild an organization that obviously doesn't have enough talent. A trade like this would add 3 very young and talented prospects into the system to develop while also adding Shaw and Rodriguez to the majors roster as young pieces to build on. Swihart being the wildcard to take a shot on as I'm sure Boston wants him gone. This also adds some payroll flexibility by forcing Boston to take on Robertson's contract as well. I'm sure there will be some outcry because I'm not getting 1 of Boston's big name prospects but I don't think we can sacrifice quantity for 1 big name like Bennitendi or Moncada that will hurt the overall package we can get back. Free Agent Signings Nick Hundley Michael Saunders Jeremy Hellickson -Hundley is another shot at adding a vet to stabilize the C position for now, could be 1 of several names on the FA list if you don't like Hundley -Saunders is talented and relatively young still. Can play good OF D and adds pop as well. He won't be cheap but also won't break the bank. -Hellickson is a solid vet who can be a stable presence to the rotation. Will come back down to earth a little back in the AL but he should be above average and consistent. Again, shouldn't break the bank either. C- Hundley/Narvaez 1B- Shaw/Abreu 2B- Sally/Lawrie SS- Anderson 3B- Frazier LF- Saunders CF- Eaton RF- Melky/Tilson/Swihart DH- Abreu/Melky Eaton Melky Abreu Frazier Shaw Saunders Anderson Hundley Sally/Lawrie Tilson/Swihart battle it out for last roster spot on offense. Most likely Tilson because of D. SP- Sale SP- Rodon SP- Hellickson SP- Rodriguez SP- Gonzalez Middle Relief- Putnam Petricka Purke/whoever steps up as the 2nd lefty Kahnle/Ynoa Late Inning relief- Jennings Jones Fulmer Burdi Just put Fulmer in the pen and let him throw gas. He's not built to be a starter and his mechanics and stuff aren't built for it either. Fulmer/Jones/Burdi could make a dominant force in the pen to shorten games ala the Royals. Go ahead and tear it apart.... 4 years of Quintana has to bring back Benintendi
  15. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 30, 2016 -> 01:43 PM) Especially since Kershaw actually leads the NL in fWAR despite only throwing 140 innings. Sale leads the AL in fWAR
  16. QUOTE (Reddy @ Sep 28, 2016 -> 08:24 PM) and why are we ignoring that Gary Johnson couldn't name ONE SINGLE FOREIGN LEADER? Hahahaha Wasn't it that he couldn't name a Foreign Leader that he looked up to? Tad bit different of a question.
  17. QUOTE (The Gooch @ Sep 28, 2016 -> 02:12 PM) Fox is overrated Absolutely. Gase has no track record of success though. His offense was fine last year but it wasn't an all time great offense. Most of their best plays came from Cutler making something happen after the play broke down. Gase is perfectly qualified to be a HC. I'll never be upset that he's not the HC in Chicago though.
  18. QUOTE (Brian @ Sep 28, 2016 -> 02:06 PM) Firing Fox a year after we let Gase go would piss me off. Gase is overrated.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 27, 2016 -> 07:31 PM) I really think Fox is gone if this season goes as expected Completely disagree. He gets a 3rd year regardless. Teams can't dump regimes after 2 years. It sets you back so much. I also don't expect a 2-3 win season. They'll bounce back and win 5-6 games.
  20. If the Sox weren't willing to up the ante for Cespedes last offseason, why would they do it this year and give up the 12th pick in the draft to do so? It doesn't make sense.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2016 -> 01:11 PM) Chris Kuc ‏@ChrisKuc 49m49 minutes ago Source: Artemi Panarin seeking six-year deal worth $6-plus million per with #Blackhawks: Sounds about right
  22. Really good stuff by Brian. It's really easy to be upset about them not blowing past the pool but what Paddy said does make sense. They can sign guys that would be 500-600K players for 300-350K. Many of these guys have made it stateside from the past few signing periods: Micker Adolfo, Nelson Acosta, Ricky Mota, Felix Mercedes, Jhoandro Alfaro, Amado Nunez, and Franklin Reyes. Tatis is highly regarded and was obviously traded to San Diego. The most recent class landed three OF's ranked in the 30's in Josue Guerrero, Luis Mieses, and Anderson Comas. They signed 9 players total. We really have no proof that some of these guys are worse prospects than guys signed for $4 million bonuses. If they ever do go over, this is the year to do it. I doubt it happens though.
  23. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Sep 27, 2016 -> 08:51 AM) Greg with a home win Friday, the last week of the season could pit 8-0 Loyola v 8-0 Rice at Rice......Loyola does not travel well......of course Rice has to get past Carmel and Rita neither of which are what they used to be. If the Rice QB continues playing like he has, they could be the best team in the state along with HF, Loyola and LWE. That Lockport conference is an absolute beast. The CCL Blue gets a lot of recognition but other than Rice and Loyola the other teams make their noise in the lower classes of the playoffs. There is a huge difference between 6A and 8A in the state playoffs. Our conference lost Lincoln Way North and Both Joliet Schools this year. We should send 8 teams of the 13 to the playoffs though. HF should be 9-0. LWE probably 8-1 and Bradley-Bourbonnais will also win 8-9 games. Lockport, LWW, and LWC should all be in that 6-7 win range. I think Thornridge will make it at 5-4 as well and Bolingbrook is fighting for their playoff lives from here on out. Stagg, Andrew, Sandburg, Thornton, and Thornwood are all pretty down but a very tough conference.
  24. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 26, 2016 -> 11:25 PM) I was assuming Collins, Hansen and Burdi/Call I think Collins and Hansen will be on top 100 lists. Burdi won't be on Law's list but I bet all 3 are on other lists.
  25. The Bears aren't very good but it's overreaction city on defense. They are down their 3 best players: Goldman, McPhee, and Trevathan. Also missing Fuller and Callahan. Next man up is just a cute thing that coaches say. But when "Next man up" is a guy that sucks, this is what happens. Their decimated defense isn't good enough to withstand getting nothing from the offense. If you could guarantee me the #1 or #2 pick right now I'd take it but I don't believe they will be that awful once Cutler returns. They have absolutely no depth, their offense and OC are bad, and they are decimated by injuries.
