  1. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 01:22 PM) Would folks here be happy with that type of return? Is that the type of return that positively reshapes the entire outlook of the franchise? Nope. That doesn't really move the meter.
  2. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 09:44 AM) brutal He did own up to the mistake today. Something not many politicians would have done. https://www.yahoo.com/news/gary-johnson-res...-135404310.html
  3. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 09:56 AM) That's what I'm trying to say. Obviously you don't trade Q for trash just to get rid of him because Sale is out the door, but I think Q should be aggressively shopped if Sale is dealt. Obviously they shouldn't move him if they don't get a good enough offer, but trading him is an idea I think they should consider if they do in fact move Sale. We'll see. It will be an interesting offseason for sure. There are so many different routes the Sox can take, hopefully they pick the right one. I got you. I don't think hanging onto Quintana is the worst thing in the world. He can always be traded later is my point.
  4. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 02:36 PM) Bears just gave Kyle Long a massive extension. Biggest ever for a guard, 4 years 40 million, 30 of it guaranteed. That's left tackle money but Kyle is worth it. Kelechi Osemele got a 5 year deal for $58.5 million in offseason but only $25.5 million in guarantees. A few things about the Long deal: Long is signed for next year for $8 million. His extension takes effect the following season and is 4 years for $40 million with $30 million guaranteed ($23 million completely guaranteed). Long is already 27 years old and this deal will take him through his age 32 season.
  5. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 09:30 AM) The same thought process applies to Sale, IMO. If either of Sale or Q are dealt this offseason, the team won't be good for several years. Why let a legit ace in Q rot on a 65 win team for years if Sale is traded? Trade both or trade neither. You still aren't understanding this. Trading both would be ideal. If you get a monster package for Sale and a monster package for Q then yes it makes sense. I think you are more likely to get the huge package for Sale though. They shouldn't trade Sale for a ton and then deal Q for less just because Sale is already gone. That doesn't make any sense.
  6. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 09:17 AM) It would be such a White Sox move to trade one, get a decent haul of prospects, but keep the other and do that annoying halfass going for it/selling thing It would be more annoying to trade them both for a "decent haul" of prospects.
  7. QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 09:14 AM) What's the point in moving Sale if you don't move Quintana? He's only signed for one additional year. The point is that if you don't get a s***load for Quintana there is no reason to trade him. He's locked up for the next four years and it isn't out of the question that they won't get appropriate value for him. Trading Sale makes much more sense in my opinion. The same goes for Adam Eaton. He's a 27 year old 5 WAR OF that's locked up for 5 more seasons. There's no reason to trade him unless you get blown away.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 09:04 AM) Ultimately, they can only keep throwing scapegoats out there for so long. Same thing with that same old storyline about finances being tight. Fine, if you're not willing to spend, you have to leverage the assets that you do have in Sale, Q and Eaton. The new emerging narrative seems to be that we have to trust this new process under Hostetler....but are any of those guys other than Collins and Burdi going to arrive to take advantage of the presence of Chris Sale? Selling Fulmer, Burdi and Tilson won't get them very far this offseason. And the fans are desperate for the White Sox version of Kris Bryant...especially when they started envisioning all those young players who theoretically would have come over from Boston, Texas or the Dodgers. When that evaporated and we were left with Avi Garcia again...well, crickets the last two months. I don't think they are trading from the system though, caulfield. They are going to do what the fans want this time. I think that the Matt Davidson's and Charlie Tilson's of the world will get a ton of playing time next year while adding more to the system through trades, drafting, and the international market. I hope they sign some fee agents with the intention of flipping them though. The losing shouldn't be a problem. The Sox have been losing without the benefits of rebuilding.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 8, 2016 -> 08:22 AM) Has anyone seen any plausible suggestions yet to get the White Sox out of this miasma? Something has to happen...a final tipping or inflection point. Things can't continue like this much longer. This is an interesting article by Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald: http://www.dailyherald.com/article/2016090...orts/160909115/ This offseason will definitely be interesting. It sounds to me like Ventura and most of coaches will be gone. It also sounds like some advanced and pro scouts will be on the way out. I've heard from multiple people that the rebuild is coming (Dick Allen, raBBIT, other ST holders that I know, as well as media members like Matt Spiegel). How much of a rebuild is the real question. I think Chris Sale is getting traded this offseason because he's signed for the next 3 years and it's tough to see a definite path to success that includes him in next 3 seasons. I would expect that Robertson, Cabrera, and Frazier will move as well. I think Eaton, Abreu, and Quintana are tricky though. They won't want to move everything because honestly, they aren't looking to suck for 5 years. I am convinced that some sort of "step back" is coming and I would bet that it involves moving Sale.
  10. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 10:07 AM) Me and some buddies combine to do a pretty high money survivor pool every year. We have to pick 2 teams a week. Seattle is our lock, the 2nd one is being debated like crazy. I'm leaning GB but not confident in that at all. Any thoughts? This week is super hard. I picked Seattle for mine as well. I was trying to pick against Cleveland but they are playing Philly.
  11. QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 09:48 AM) Only two more years on Sale's contract, right? And the Sox will never re-sign him at market value. Plus he called KW an M.F.'er. Sale....he GAWN! Quintana....probably not. Sale is signed for the next 3 seasons for $39 million. Quintana is locked up for the next 4 seasons at $36.85 million. Ridiculous
  12. QUOTE (Special K @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 09:12 AM) Does the Shields trade win the award for worst trade of the 2016 season? Having trouble thinking of worse trades... Shelby Miller trade is worse
  13. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 06:27 PM) Like I said, I don't think Connor Barth is better. Maybe Gould has regressed that much during the off-season, but last year, Gould was better then Barth. Barth is better from inside 40. Bernstein said on the air yesterday that John Fox never trusted Gould and was looking to get rid of him. Hub also said that one day at practice prior to Browns game, Gould pushed 4/5 kicks wide right from 40-50 yard range. He had a really bad camp and they just decided they'd rather have the certainty of Barth inside 40. Gould was 42/51 on FG and 17/23 on FG from 40+ over the last 2 seasons. Barth might not be clearly better but he's not definitely worse and he's way cheaper.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 09:16 AM) What's weird is the Cubs usually only feature 1 or 2 guys they actually drafted. Yep. One of them is the NL MVP though.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2016 -> 08:47 AM) If they are truly rebuilding, there is no reason to keep him. Even if it is a rebuild, I'm not positive that they end up dealing both Quintana and Sale. Do they also deal Eaton? What about Abreu? Where does it stop? Gonzalez should have some value with the lack of SP available.
  16. I can't tweet at work but Josh Nelson just retweeted something that said Burdi's season is over. He's headed to Louisville to take classes.
  17. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 10:31 AM) The shock, disbelief, and outrage over the Gould release shows you how much attention the average fan actually pays to things as they develop. Gould was mediocre last year and the release didn't happen in a vacuum, preseason showed his decline probably wasn't a fluke. He hasn't really been the same since his injury, really. He was being paid top dollar for a kicker. It just didn't make sense to keep paying him regardless of how much cap space they had. Kickers as accurate as Gould over the years are hard to find, but decent kickers aren't. It's not like Gould was groomed and drafted, the Bears plucked him out of nowhere after their kicker got hurt early in the season (I forgot his name, it was Paul Edinger's replacement). Not even the average fan. People like David Haugh ( the lead columnist in the #1 newspaper in the 3rd largest market in the country), Laurence Holmes (670 the score host), others on Bears beat, and Michael Wilbon (national boob and blowhard) questioned the decision making process. It's all mind numbingly insane. Gould was bad. They didn't bring in competition because they didn't love the options. They liked Connor Barth better. He became available. They released Gould, saved money, and signed a different kicker that they were familiar with for less $$. The whole thing is really quite unbelievable.
  18. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) You see loads of cap space and think sign free agents. They see it as they have a ton of players who they need to resign. David Bakhtiari, Eddie Lacy, TJ Lang, JC Tretter, and Micah Hyde. Because they let Sitton go and didn't sign any big name free agents, there is a pretty good chance they can bring all those players back. Yeah I understand how the process works. They also don't do it because they want to recoup comp picks for free agents that leave. This is a sound strategy. But when your QB is getting older and the entire team's success depends on him it might behoove them to dabble a little bit more to fill holes instead of relying on 4th and 5th rounders to step in and cover injuries.
  19. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 10:05 AM) This guy has only won 1 Super Bowl as a GM and 1 as a director of player personnel. Been a part of playoff teams almost every year. Total bum. I know a lot of teams that what kill for 1 Super Bowl win and to be a contender every year. Ted Thompson has his faults, but he is still one of the best GM's in the game. That's not just my opinion. This whole thing with Sitton may come back to bite them, but I will give Ted Thompson the benefit of the doubt for now. I can't think of one player that he let go who ended up still being great and the Packers looked dumb. Marco Rivera Mike Wahle Scott Wells Aaron Kampman Greg Jennings James Jones Charles Woodson Tramon Williams He was second guessed on all of those. None of those players did much when left. So Sitton may be great for another 5 years and the Packers look dumb, but I would be more willing to bet he doesn't finish that deal with the Bears. Also, the Packers have a lot of homegrown talent because they draft well. Free agency is not a sound strategy, I wish Thompson was a little more active, but outside of the Broncos, most teams that live off free agency are bad and stay bad. Also, I never said he was a bum. I also never said that they should live off free agency. I said it would benefit them to add a guy or two once in awhile. Especially when the roster has holes, they are a super bowl contender, and have loads of cap space.

He's not the greatest GM ever that should never be questioned though. That's how people act about him.
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 01:53 PM) He's not that good a player. I'd release him and let some other organization deal with his distraction. Last time I looked this was a "team sport" and he has grasped all the attention on that team. Good luck to them winning anything of note this season. The Niners will probably be 3-13. That has nothing to do with who sits or stands for the National Anthem though. He can do whatever he wants. I don't care. Stand. Don't stand. Whatever. It did a good job of exposing stupid people on the internet and stupid people that I encounter on a daily basis though. Where is the Josh Brown thread? Oh wait there isn't one.

  23. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Sep 6, 2016 -> 08:08 AM) Packers just don't value the guard position that much. Mike McCarthy yesterday said they value some positions more than others. So the Packers cut a player on the wrong side of 30 who has seen his play decline last year and this preseason. They have a young guard who they think is ready to go. They save almost 6 million dollars which will almost certainly go resigning their LT. I still think Sitton is a good player, the Bears aren't getting garbage, but I don't think he is a top 5 guard anymore. He must be bad if the genius Ted Thompson got rid of him. The same Ted Thompson who has had 2 of the greatest QBs of all time and has 1 SB appearance in his 11 years on the job. The Packers are a really good organization but the slobber fest that people have over TT is crazy. Their team isn't loaded with homegrown talent because they are all great. It's because they don't cut any of them. They don't use free agency which is generally a sound strategy but carrying over $20 million in space every year for a SB contender with holes doesn't really make any sense. He got the QB position right though and it covers up a lot of holes. GoSox, this isn't directed at you. You seem like a good fan and you are a good poster. I just don't really understand the Ted Thompson thing. I never really have.
  24. QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 10:14 AM) Absolute BOMBS http://m.mlb.com/video/?affiliateId=clubMEGAMENU Oh yea Jose is back. With the addition of a few players, this offense is going to be much improved next season. This is what I want to see: Fowler Eaton Abreu Frazier Cabrera Moreland Wieters Lawrie/Saladino Anderson Really digging the balance of that lineup - speed at the top and bottom, high OBP at the top, and power in the middle. That's a lineup combined with top 3 in the league pitching that can win a lot of games. Would you be in favor of forfeiting a draft pick in the 11-15 range in order to sign Dexter Fowler? I would not.
