QUOTE (daggins @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 12:56 PM) Even a bright guy like Keri is severely underrating Quintana. Mass perception is a strange thing. Yeah I'm not sure that Tijuan Walker has more trade value than Q.

http://www.si.com/mlb/2016/03/02/mlb-trade...rankings-part-1 Keri has Jose Quintana as an honorable mention this year and he has Carlos Rodon as #42.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 11:26 AM) I realize the Bulls are cheap, but does Hoiberg get a 2nd year? Honestly, this is a disaster. Yes, there are injuries, but they don't even play. Someone has to lose their job for this season. Yes Hoiberg will be back. Hopefully they will get some players that fit the system but there's a big problem. Everyone's favorite "superstar" Jimmy Butler doesn't fit what the head coach wants to do either. He's an isolation 2 Guard. I think the most likely scenario is that Gar Forman gets launched and Paxson/Reinsdorf hire a new GM. Not that it really matters but I think that happens.

2016 Ticket Pre-Sale - Wed 3/2-Thurs 3/3. General Onsale 3/4

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 10:05 AM) Thanks, got Saturday tickets vs. Indians opening weekend. I'm going to go to that as well. I'd rather go to the Saturday Game because it's probably a Chris Sale start. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 09:31 AM) And I'm not too stoked about the upcoming draft class, so I don't think missing the playoffs for a higher pick is that big of a deal. It's not a big deal but I don't really want to see this team play a playoff game.

Sox Claim OF Daniel Fields off Waivers from Dodgers
Y2Jimmy0 replied to shysocks's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This was a write-up on Fields from Kiley McDaniel back in 2014:http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2014-top-10-prospects-detroit-tigers/: The Year in Review: Fields finally got the hang of Double-A in his second go-around in the league. He hit .284 with a .791 OPS but his struggles against left-handers (.684 vs .840 OPS against RHP) took a bite out of his overall results. He stole 24 bases in 31 attempts The Scouting Report: A curious decision to rush Fields’ development early in his career almost permanently derailed his MLB dreams. The young hitter rebounded well in 2013. He flashes average or better power to go along with 15 stolen base potential. Fields continues to strike out way too much to hit for a consistent average in the Majors and his struggles against southpaws could force him into a platoon role. Defensively, he’s played a lot of centre field but is probably more of a corner outfielder in the Majors due to his solid — but not exceptional — range. The Year Ahead: Fields will move up Triple-A in 2014 and, if he continues to improve, he may be one of the first outfielders promoted to the Majors in the event of an injury. The Career Outlook: The young prospect has to be commended for staying with it and not giving up or getting too frustrated with his lack of development. With that said, he has a lot of work to do against lefties to become a future regular. He's still only 25. If he can play average-above average defense in CF, I'd rather have him as the 4th OF than Shuck. Shuck isn't good in CF. I'd also rather have the LHB on the bench that hits well vs RHP. Shuck is better vs LHP. Fields is a little interesting. I kind of just glossed over this claim before. He's probably bad but guys with power/speed combo like this are always worth the flyer. -
The guys on the radio today were saying that missing the playoffs would be the worst outcome for Bulls. I very much disagree. I think making the playoffs would be worse. You have 0 shot at winning a title. You have like a 1.5% chance at winning the lottery. I'd much rather miss the playoffs.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 09:43 PM) I want to trade Eaton because he would bring far more in trade than Thompson (esp off of a career year). Also, Thompson would be a competent replacement (for sure he can handle it defensively) and would have addressed a big need: defense. I don't want to dump Avi because we would get zero for him. I don't hate Eaton nor love Avi. Trading only players you hate is "selling low", a philosophy I consistently reject. Why don't the Dodgers play him or trade him? Maybe they don't think that baseball ends in 2017 like you and KW do. Otherwise, I have no idea what their plans are for him. Let me ask you: Why did the Dodgers take Thompson/Montas/Johnson instead of Frazier??????? I didn't like out 73 win team making short term deals 2 years ago and I don't like this 76 win team (which, with pythag 72, may have been worse than the 73 win team) doing it either. If this were a legit 80-82 win team and then you make those deals? Yes it makes sense (the Frazier deal would; the Samardizja trade was inane on all levels). Eaton is a 3-3.5 WAR CF. Trayce Thompson is a 4th OF. This is absurd.

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 02:11 PM) Couple of easy reasons why it makes sense 1) The guaranteed money will more than cover the double Franchise money 2) The chance of an injury derailing a career or hurting value always looms Especially point 1. Alshon is not as good as Dez Bryant. Nobody said he was but he'd get close to it on the open market. Dez and Demaryius signed identical 5 year $70 million deals with $45 gtd. I said earlier that Jeffery would get 5/65/38. It's not the same $$

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 01:00 PM) I dunno, that's like Bryant/Thomas money. He had a bad year last year in the durability category. I'd say $12 million per is max. With the young talent coming out at the receiver position every year, I'm shocked the market for these guys hasn't softened yet. I think the Bears will have to tag him twice if they are insistent on $12 per. No reason for him to do that. Thomas' deal was for $70 million and $45 million guaranteed. What I proposed is slightly less than that.

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 12:26 PM) Twenty-eight (nine) is not young for an NFL lineman. Yep. I think Jeff Allen and Brandon Brooks are the OG's that Bears will be looking at.

While I would like Austin Jackson added to the fold, it seems as if the White Sox will add an OF via trade or waivers. There are 4 teams I can think of specifically with OF surpluses. Tampa Bay: Jennings, Guyer, Dickerson, Kiermaier, Mahtook, Souza, Pearce Oakland: Burns, Canha, Coghlan, Crisp, Davis, Fuld, Redick Los Angeles: Thompson, Pederson, Ethier, Crawford, Puig, Van Slyke, Hernandez, Guerrero Houston: Marisnick, Rasmus, Gomez, Springer, Tucker Of these players, the most likely to be available for cheap are: Fuld, Crisp, and Guyer. Like everyone else, I'd love Scott Van Slyke or Josh Redick. Should be interesting but these are the names that I'll be monitoring as the spring goes on.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 11:55 AM) Yup. Like you said, that 2 day grace period let's teams/players negotiate/agree to deals, then become official on Wednesday. Many of those free agent deals were already consummated at the Scouting Combine. That's where it begins.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 11:35 AM) Where are you hearing these rumors? I wouldn't mind getting a little more speed on the edge, but the Houston/Young combo combined for 12 sacks. That's pretty solid. Houston himself had 8, you'd think someone would be interested in making a trade if they do wanna get rid of him. I've seen Vernon mentioned by Aaron Leming, Hoge. Biggs had a snippet in his column about a Texans FO guy talking about Lamarr Houston being released by Bears possibly. I don't really agree with it either. He was pretty productive once healthy last year.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 11:32 AM) Finally a realistic look at our team instead of a rosy outlook when everybody is 0-0. Our defense assures us of no playoffs. The team would have to hit like crazy to make up for this defense. The formula remains defense and a great bullpen and we have neither. If we wind up somehow outslugging every team in baseball, my bad. But the Sox hitting has not been great of late and as this thread suggests the defense is horrific. THE SEASON IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miller getting the franchise tag means Trevathan and Malik Jackson will hit free agency. I think Trevathan to Bears is a poorly kept secret at this point but I don't expect the Bears to pay what it would take to get Malik Jackson.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 11:18 AM) Vernon is a good player, but I wouldn't spend big on an OLB if I was the Bears. Houston/Young quietly had a good year last year. Vernon seems undersized for the 5 too. He'd play OLB for Bears. They are reportedly interested. There are also rumors of Bears possibly cutting Lamarr Houston.

The battle for shortstop - applying some odds

QUOTE (oldsox @ Mar 1, 2016 -> 07:34 AM) I think 13 pitchers is one waaay too many. It's not 13 it's the American League. 5 starters, 7 relievers, 8 position players, DH, and 4 bench guys. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 27, 2016 -> 03:17 PM) So...just something I was pondering over last night. Let's just hypothetically say that Rollins were to win the SS position and let's focus on defense, position by position. OF - same as last year. 1b - same as last year 2b - Lawrie - he's an upgrade over Johnson but he's a downgrade compared to Sanchez. SS - Rollins - he was a downgrade defensively from Alexei in 2015, both UZR and DRS agree, and Alexei wasn't that great last year. 3b - Saladino was excellent there and Beckham was ok, Gillaspie was terrible. Frazier is an upgrade compared to the last 2 but a downgrade compared to Saladino. C - upgrade compared to both as long as they stay healthy. So overall compared to at least the 2nd half of last year, the defense around the infield is worse and the OF is the same. That's a pretty poor defensive lineup in the IF with no really strong anchor anywhere. It's better than what we started with in April/May of last year, but unless someone improves over last year, not by much. I agree that the defense is a concern but bad defense isn't why they lost last year. They had one of the worst offenses off all time and they didn't improve as a team once Saladino, Sanchez, and Thompson were on defense either. Hitting covers up a lot. -
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 03:33 PM) Unless Alshon absolutely does not want to play in Chicago (which I doubt). 4 years $11 per would be awesome. Not enough in this environment. I bet he's asking for $15 million per year. Bears are probably offering $11-$12 million hence the wide gap. I think right around $13 million probably get its done. 5 years $65 million with $36+ million in guaranteed $$.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 02:56 PM) Its not about nominations, its about opportunity. There was probably one minority acting snub from all of the roles, but there were other white people snubbed as well. The point is the roles available arent equal therefore nominations dont happen. This is probably a better question for caulfield but I've heard multiple people bring up the fact that Asians are generally racist. Movie studios make a ton of money overseas and in Asian nations, they don't want to see movies with black people in them. I'm not sure how true this is but Bill Maher brought it up and I've seen it mentioned in a couple of other places as well.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 29, 2016 -> 11:21 AM) Given how much more ideologically separated the parties are these days compared to say 30-40 years ago, voting straight ticket makes sense if that's where your ideology lies. If someone is very strongly conservative, where's the scenario where they would rationally consider voting for a Democrat over a Republican? I guess this makes sense. I have a friend that votes for every Republican on every ticket because he claims to be a "Republican". You make a good point though. I think there are differences though. Kasich and Cruz are from the same party but are very different. I'm with Republicans on smaller form of government and similar issues but I can't go with them on almost any social issue. I could vote for someone like Kasich. I couldn't vote for Cruz. That's all I meant. If you go Republican because you dislike Hillary or go with Hillary because you are afraid of Trump I understand that. But I still think that far too many people ignore what is actually being said by the candidates and go with Democrat or Republican because they feel like they are supposed to.
