QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 3, 2016 -> 08:54 AM) And with that last announcement OSU is done for the day. I'm not sure how Tuf Borland will do in the Big Ten but he was an awesome high school player.

MLB looking at strategy of deliberate tanking
Y2Jimmy0 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Teams should be able to do whatever they want. Sometimes it is essential to get really bad in order to get really good. -
I'd prefer Ethier because of the lack of LH starting pitching in the Sox division. I've also been on record as wanting to keep the comp pick. That being said, I'm not sure how the roster shakes out with Ethier on it. You'd essentially need a RHH platoon partner for LaRoche and Ethier. Garcia could be the platoon bat for Ethier. Sands could be for LaRoche. You'd have nobody that plays CF on the bench though. I'm interested to see what happens.

My buddy played baseball at UIC with Granderson. They played Stanford his Senior year. He told me that Quentin hit a ball that still hasn't landed. They widely speculated at the time that he was on juice. Man Quentin was a fun player.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 2, 2016 -> 12:16 PM) It's Cowley so who knows how much is made up: http://chicago.suntimes.com/sports/7/71/12...lf-preservation I've heard similar from an athletic training type that I know. He knows some of the guys at the Bulls. Jason Goff has been talking about this as well. Seems like Forman could be done at year's end.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 2, 2016 -> 12:42 PM) The Astros drew 7,165,030 over the past 4 years, helped by a playoff jump this year. They did a rebuild, lost major attendance numbers, yet didn't wilt away and die like everyone claims the Sox would. I don't think it's that they couldn't handle it. It's the simple fact that teams with Chris Sale, Quintana, Rodon, Abreu, and Eaton don't rebuild. It doesn't make sense.
-
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 2, 2016 -> 12:04 PM) Umm...even with those numbers, would you be comfortable paying $36 million over 2 years to a 33 year old who's essentially a platoon player at this point? I'm desperate, but not that desperate. I never said that the Sox should pay him $18 million per. Dodgers would have to eat some.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Feb 2, 2016 -> 11:01 AM) I STILL don't understand why everyone is so fascinated by Ethier. Yeah, he used to be good, but he's old and expensive now. Unless the Sox could package LaRoche and a REALLY low level prospect, I want nothing to do with him. Here's why: Ethier put up a 2.9 fWAR and had a wRC+ of 137 last year. He was really good vs RHP. Vs RHP: .385 wOBA, 150 wRC+, high .336 BABIP, with a .900 OPS.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 2, 2016 -> 09:18 AM) Man I loved listening to Thibs on Simmons podcast. Biggest problem of Hoiberg for me is he has a "system" and is not out there minimizing his teams weaknesses well. He basically puts the weaknesses full on display. They don't even run his system though. It's all iso's and guys taking turns getting theirs.
-
QUOTE (ozzfest @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 11:24 PM) Is Hoiberg a bad coach? Maybe. But the conversation needs to shift to John Paxson and Gar Forman. They are the decision makers here. They pick the players. They pick the coach. They run the show. And this show sucks. The Bulls have ranged between B- and B+ for seventeen years now. That trend is going to continue as long as Paxson is running the show. Good post. I actually think this is the year that Paxson launches Gar Forman. Not sure what happens after that though. This team blows. They have talent but they are 12 guys running around with the same jersey on. I was a fan of bringing in Hoiberg and it isn't working currently. This team isn't that good though. It's a poorly constructed roster. I wish they would sell off what they could but they are so delusional about competing. No, it wouldn't look like this with Thibs. The end result will be the same with either guy though. Getting beat early in the playoffs.

QUOTE (daggins @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 01:35 PM) well vs rhp Eaton Melky Abreu Frazier Ethier Laroche Lawrie Desmond Avila/Navarro and vs LHP Eaton Melky Abreu Frazier Sands Lawrie Desmond Avi or some other RH bat (Coats? Raburn????) Avila/Navarro I feel like either of those would be pretty solid lineups. Edit - with Saladino as the spare IF and Sanchez in Charlotte. You can't have a bench with Sands and Garcia though because you have no backup CF.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 12:44 PM) What position does he play? H-Back/TE? Probably. Loggains does incorporate a FB into his offense more than Gase does too.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 11:50 AM) If Phil is reporting it, we might as well close this thread. The last time Rogers was right about something, the Sox got Kevin Youkilis

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 10:35 AM) That is great, but the Bears will use the franchise tag so that means worse case, Jeffrey has 2 more years until Lions can get him (or best case depending on whose shoes you are in). Reality with the franchise tag in play, Jeffrey isn't going anywhere (unless someone wants to make a significant trade offer). Sucks Megatron is retiring (from a selfish perspective that he was so fun to watch, that said, he's accomplished a ton and he's gotten beat up the past few years, so if he's ready, I wish him the best and I'll be glad not to see him go up against our non-peanut db's). In his prime, he was the most impressive wideout I ever saw. I think Moss was better.

QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 10:08 AM) http://espn.go.com/blog/detroit-lions/post...f-lions-targets So they'd be interested in a guy that won't hit the market if he hits the market? Fantastic. Jeffery is getting the franchise tag.

QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 07:16 AM) Detroit going to try and sign Alshon away? Jeffery won't be a free agent

So when we're right around .500 in July, what do we do?

QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Feb 1, 2016 -> 08:14 AM) Blame the bad fans for not supporting a competitive team. Did they do that recently? -
QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 31, 2016 -> 04:29 PM) Saw this rumored a few weeks ago. Not sure if this applies to him but this CTE stuff will definitely make guys think about extending their careers longer than they have to. He has knee problems.

Y2Jimmy0 replied to ChiSoxJon's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If they are .500 I think they will add and try to go to the playoffs. And then try again next year. They won't even consider selling off anything until middle of 2017 in my opinion. Why would they? This team should be in contention and can always add in season. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 03:39 PM) Expiring contracts aren't really that valuable anymore given the huge jump in the cap that's coming. Plus there's no shot the Bulls blow this up when there's a small chance of beating the Cavs and getting to the Finals. Was there a bus accident I haven't heard about? The Bulls have no shot at beating the Cavs. I can already see the Bulls offseason now: 2 year deal for Gasol at big $$ and a max deal for Harrison Barnes. Championship.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 10:20 AM) It's not great that Bernie is an atheist but clearly everybody has the right to not be a believer. I'm not so sure Hillary is much of a believer. I think I read somebody speculating she isn't into religion either. My bad if that's wrong. We have some weird candidates this time around. We have Cruz who seems like the male Hillary personality wise, kind of a jerk. We have Bernie who is an alleged socialist and I guess a non believer. We have Trump who is a selfish businessman And we have Hillary who feels she's entitled to be president for some weird reason. Is Jeb Bush so bad after all? Just asking. I'm sure we've had many atheist presidents already.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 10:00 AM) I don't think LA has a concept of odd man out. I think they'll just hoard everyone. They only have so many roster spots though. Starting INF of Turner, Seager, Kendrick, and Gonzalez. Ellis, Barnes, and Grandal at C. These are their OFs: Crawford, Ethier, Puig, Van Slyke, Pederson, Trayce, Guerrero, and Enrique Hernandez. I'd try to get Van Slyke.

-
QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Jan 30, 2016 -> 08:04 AM) I think they will still keep k***' just because he's so cheap and so valuable as a utility guy. Gerrero and Van Slyke are the guys I can't see a spot for. I would take either 1, but isn't Guerrero automatically a FA if traded or something like that? Van Slyke makes a lot of sense for both sides in my opinion. Can't what they would want for him, but doubt it would be much. Van Slyke has a career 142 wRC+ vs LHP

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 10:57 PM) This crap has to change. Older guys that break into the bigs late get absolutely screwed. Any guy who's not elite gets screwed. It's not always about the money. FA is supposed to be this great "you earned it" moment, and guys cant even pick where they want to go because the amount of offers shrinks down to almost nothing in some cases. They could accept the QO?
