QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:38 AM) Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 7m7 minutes ago Sources: #Padres still talking to SS Alexei Ramirez, as first reported by @MLBBruceLevine. Would require shorter term than Desmond. Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal 7m7 minutes ago Signing Ramirez also would enable #Padres to keep 2nd-round pick (1st pick, No. 8 overall, is protected). SD could get six picks in top 100. They wouldn't lose that pick. They'd lose the Upton pick. Why do insiders keep saying things like this?

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:33 AM) Would you rather: Sign Cespedes and then sign Desmond to a 1 year prove it again deal worth 11-13 million, then offer him a QO after this year and recoup that pick for the 17 draft. Sign Cespedes and resign Alexei to a 1 year deal 5-7 million dollar deal. Sign Cespedes and let Saladino be the bridge to Anderson. Thoughts? I'd sign Cespedes and let Saladino play SS. I'd try to spend the $$ that would be spent on Ramirez on a RHP

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:01 AM) http://www.baseballessential.com/news/2016...asyleaguegm.com White Sox wouldn't lose their 2nd round pick. They'd lose the Samardzija pick.

QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:13 AM) So what happens to the team that signs Fowler, assuming it isn't the cubs? Do they still lose a pick, and if so, to whom? The system doesn't work that way anymore. If a team with a late 1st rounder signs Fowler, they lose the pick. However, the Cubs would then forfeit that selection "in the comp round) because they signed 2 free agents with QO's.

QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 09:47 AM) And Avi at DH? And Avi not on the team. Melky at DH. LaRoche sitting. -
QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 10:55 AM) Posted this in the Cespedes thread previously but thought it might warrant a separate thread; feel free to move if needed. I really don't want to give up the pick for him, especially to the Cubs, but Fowler is an intriguing fit as a secondary option after YC/JU. It's not as splashy, but he could play an effective CF and it would allow us to move Eaton to LF and put Melky in the DH spot. And I think most importantly, Fowler would fit perfectly in the 2 hole and provide the Sox with 2 guys at the top who get on base at a good clip in front of the heart of the order. And Sliding Melky down to 5th or 6th in the lineup is a better spot for his bat to produce imo. Having said all that, I of course prefer Cespedes The Cubs won't be getting a pick for Fowler because they signed 2 QO free agents. I wouldn't give up a pick for Dexter Fowler. I'm pretty sure Sox won't give up a pick unless it's for Upton

QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 09:06 AM) I didn't know Boers was retiring. Wow, when did they announce that one? They haven't yet. I know someone that knows Terry Boers' son and he all but confirmed it.

I honestly wouldn't mind Sands as a bench option. He could play RF vs LHP if the Sox land Cespedes. -
The next market inefficiency...2nd/3rd tier pitching
Y2Jimmy0 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 08:35 AM) Yes sir. We need as many of the QO free agents to sign with teams that haven't given up their first round pick yet as well as the Padres (likely landing spot for Desmond). The Padres would lose their highest comp pick for doing this which would move the Sox into the 2nd spot in comp round. Good call -
QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 05:24 PM) I wonder how this will effect the Score broadcasts. Boers is retiring after the Super Bowl so that should shakeup the lineup. Not sure what 670 decides to do. Bernstein will need a new partner but they are going to be preempted a ton by Cubs baseball.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:02 AM) http://www.royalsreview.com/2016/1/6/10724...her-ian-kennedy Royals moving on Ian Kennedy, with links to Cliff Lee, Latos and Gallardo as well. Chen and Fister given lesser consideration...Chen too expensive + Boras. Ian Kennedy to the Royals would give the White Sox a higher draft pick. So that helps. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 08:21 AM) hahaha The Kings have three guys who are both awesome and incredibly flawed in Cousins, Gay, and Rondo. They always make for interesting theater. The Kings need to keep winning. The Bulls get their 1st rounder if it's outside the top 10. Currently sitting in the 10th position.

QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:28 PM) Reported that he has a mutual 4th year option as well for $12M or a $4M buyout. Proving once again that 3 years won't get it done with the top two. They know that 3 years isn't getting it done

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 07:39 PM) Let me state once again my belief that Ian Desmond (or perhaps Fowler in June), one of the remaining Tier 2/3 starting pitchers and Parra/Jackson OR a trade for an outfielder that doesn't cost Anderson/Fulmer...that's the better set of options. Two of those four. All needs being addressed is completely unrealistic. As it stands, doing more than one might be hard. I'm pretty sure Upton is the only player left that the White Sox would give up a top 30 pick for.
-
The White Sox are posturing guys. I think they are in a good spot too. If they really want him on a 4 year deal it does them no good to leak out that they want a 4th year. Allows someone else to swoop in and go 5. I think the White Sox are the favorites for Cespedes. I could be wrong. I won't be joining the freakout though until I know for sure that Avi is the starting RF.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 02:07 PM) That part seems obvious, they'd give him the 4th year because the White Sox were offering 3 years and they upped their deal to beat that? No. If the Sox were offering 3 years, I'm pretty sure the Royals would have re-signed him to a 3 year deal with a 4th year option. We weren't getting him for the same price as Kansas City.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 11:22 AM) I'm guessing that is what it is. And if the White Sox were the competition with KC for Gordon, why would KC have had to offer 4 years with an option for a 5th if the White Sox were only offering 3? That is another thing that doesn't make much sense. So either the Sox were offering 4 or 3 with an easily attainable 4th year vesting option or another team was offering 4. This is a great point. My guess is that the White sox offered something like 4 years and $75-$80 million.
-
QUOTE (spiderman @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 10:09 AM) That could be a reasonable position to take in terms of Gordon, but what if the White Sox have this same standard for Cespedes or Upton? Do you really believe that they do though? I don't.
-
QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 09:55 AM) If the Sox think they can get one of those two for three years or less, we might as well get over the fact that they aren't landing one now. I don't think they actually believe this but I also don't think that these guys have markets. The Orioles can't afford Davis and Upton/Cespedes. Giants are trying to trade for Ozuna and are linked to Fowler. Angels supposedly have no $$. Detroit is supposedly out of $$. The Rangers want Upton on a shorter deal. I still think the Sox are the favorites for Cespedes but I could be very wrong.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 08:42 AM) I thought they would give Lovie another year. I wonder if it has something to do with personal decisions. There were 6-6 and finished 6-10. Their drafts have been good (Jason Licht makes the picks) but Lovie runs free agency, the 53, and has personnel control. Here is why he got fired: Michael Johnson, Alterraun Verner, Dane Fletcher, Bruce Carter, Sterling Moore, Henry Melton, Tim jennings, Chris Conte, and Major Wright. Hitching your wagon to bad football players usually ends up being your demise.

Trade targets: who is available and at what cost?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 08:45 AM) What is your solution, other than the obvious? Waiting with bated breath...as for Duensing, he is good friends with Gordon and I would have invited him to come in and compete with Jennings, Carroll, Beck and Turner as a non roster invitee. No guaranteed salary. Gordon wasn't coming to the Sox. He had his heart set on staying in KC and they eventually ponied up. Sox could have offered 4 years and $80 million (which is the most I would have offered) and I believe he stays in KC still. -

I wonder what the Cubs would want for Chris Coghlan? He'd be fine as the LH portion of a platoon with someone like Austin Jackson/Steve Pearce. -
QUOTE (zenryan @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 10:08 PM) Well the Glazers had Chip Kelly a few years ago until he changed his mind at the last second. Any coach would want a chance to come to an organization where you have a franchise QB who just turned 22 today. The Glazers better not have made this move bc they were scared of losing Dirk Koetter. Koetter was a good OC but that doesn't mean that he should be a HC. Some guys are just coordinators. Nothing wrong with that. I think it'll be Josh McDaniels. Spent 5 years with Jason Licht and he's leading the search.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jan 6, 2016 -> 09:52 PM) Bucs were top 10 in total offense coming into the final week. Thought he should've been given another year with Winston. In general, I think teams that have this much coaching turnover are dumb. Lovie is a bad coach though and a terrible talent evaluator. He had personnel control and made many questionable decisions. They'll be bringing in an offensive guy.
