QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 30, 2015 -> 08:59 AM) I agree with most of what you said except for Cardale Jones. He cannot read a defense. You watch him more than most of us. Won't someone still take him fairly high though thinking he has "stuff" you can't coach? Like raw tools. There are times when he looks like Daunte Culpepper. Other times, not so much.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 29, 2015 -> 04:41 PM) None of those QB's should be taken in the first round, especially not ones who are in a pass-happy system. I haven't seen any of them approaching the level of a surefire first round pick. Cook is probably tops for me, mostly because he runs a s***ty offensive system very well. I think the Bears will be picking top 5. At this point, it seems like Jared Goff is the only one that you could consider that high. If they pick 5, they are guaranteed to get a good player. Joey Bosa, ND LB Jaylon Smith, OLE Miss DL Robert Nkemdiche, ND LT Ronnie Stanley and Ole Miss OT Laremy Tunsil. Connor Cook reminds me of Andy Dalton. Cardale Jones has tons of upside. Matt Miller of Bleacher Report has 5 GM's that have said that Hackenberg is still a 1st round guy. As soon as Hack starts working out for teams, his stock will rise again. I really like Carson Wentz of ND State and I think he'd be a household name at a bigger school. Cody Kessler is probably an NFL backup according to most media draft types. It should be very interesting but unless they love Goff for some reason, I wouldn't expect a 1st round QB for the Bears unless they move up into the back half of the round.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Sep 29, 2015 -> 06:59 PM) Care to expand why? Devers is a top 20 prospect according to most outlets. Owens was consensus top 50 before he lost his eligibility this year. Benintendi will very likely become a top 50 prospect as he rose his stock more than any other player in the 2015 draft. I don't think the Sox want to go in the direction of prospects, but if they did, this would do it. The Red Sox would be the team that wouldn't think about it. I agree with raBBIt that Boston probably doesn't make that trade. Something similar is what I would need for Quintana though. He's a stud. 8th in fWAR since 2013 and extremely cheap. He's underrated but that doesn't mean the Sox will get equal value for him which is why I'd probably keep him.

QUOTE (daggins @ Sep 30, 2015 -> 07:05 AM) He's had ~1100 MLB plate appearances. He hasn't shown any growth in power or plate discipline. He's awful defensively. I'm not saying the Sox need to cut bait, but he can't be considered a starter in 2016 if there are pretenses of contention. I completely agree with this. You can't just stick him in RF next season and plan contending. My biggest issue with him is the defense. If he was a good defender, I'd be willing to live with the offensive struggles for a bit longer.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 29, 2015 -> 12:27 PM) Spotrac @spotrac 19h19 hours ago The #Bears now have $91.9M allocated to 37 players on their 2016 salary cap, an est. $60M in space to work with. http://bit.ly/1LYgwWc They clear even more space by releasing Houston, Bushrod, and Gould.

QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Sep 29, 2015 -> 10:14 AM) How are catchers evaluated I wonder? It's not very obvious how to measure their defensive performance. Flowers is top 5 in the league in pitch framing. Along with past White Sox targets, Miguel Montero, Jason Castro, and Yasmani Grandal

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 29, 2015 -> 07:50 AM) Ugh no. He's a volume passer in a pass only offense. You don't waste a high pick on a QB this year. Trade down and load up on defense. You could always move back into round 1 for a QB. If they pick in the top 5, it'll be defense or LT

QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 10:53 AM) oh man, i was really trying to be mr. positive here. you are not helping. you do make a point a really good point. it is the big "IF". if they can produce, if they can gell with each others, if the can merge into the team if crawford can continue to be a #1 goalie.....etc good post They have Toews, Kane, Hossa, Seabrook, Keith, Hjalmarsson, Crawford, Teravainen and a bunch of promising new guys. I think they'll be just fine. Not expecting another Cup this year but when you have the guys they have, they are in the conversation annually.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 10:46 AM) Depends on how it plays out. If we end up losing only a 2nd round pick for Heyward, I have no problem with that. It's a 2nd round pick and something in the range of $160 million. When have the Sox ever spent that much $$ on a free agent? People here talk about the bad contracts the team is burdened with. Danks 5 years at $65 million LaRoche at 2 years $25 million Melky Cabrera at 3 years $44 million. Those were seen as big commitments for the Sox. Heyward will be crazy expensive.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 10:36 AM) Yeah I guess I'm not excited about this year at all. I'm intrigued by Hoiberg, but it's still so maddening to me that the Bulls keep having these elaborate offseason plays to get another star player, and then the other top teams just run circles around them in doing so. Spurs are loaded. Cavs are loaded. Not sure what our purpose is as a team. I didn't realize that happened this offseason.

Tonight could be Rodon's last 2015 start

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 10:07 AM) Am I the only once who noticed the lack of "this year" at the end of that tweet? Yep. Rodon is going nowhere. -
QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 06:12 PM) This is the least excited I've been about a Bulls season in a while. I'm excited. I love Hoiberg's style. Also, the Bulls should be a contender but I'm more interested in seeing what happens at season's end. Does the roster get re-made? Noah is a free agent next offseason. Do they move him or Gasol? Do they finally trade Gibson? The cap goes up and they should have some flexibility to remake the team the way Hoiberg wants it. I'm interested in seeing Mirotic/McDermott/Portis actually play some meaningful minutes. Should be interesting for sure.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 08:19 AM) If we're to go after the Big 3 outfielders, I hope it's Heyward, Upton and Cespedes, in that order. I still think Heyward will hit for more power as he enters his prime, which frankly is the only weakness in his game right now. Cespedes could be a head case sometimes and we already have too many guys who couldn't draw a walk in this lineup. Cespedes is the only one that won't cost a draft pick. I think there's a slim chance the Sox will sign a QO free agent with a top 10 pick. I think there's zero chance they do it without a top 10 pick.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Sep 28, 2015 -> 08:09 AM) FWIW, Dan Hayes, Tom Fornelli, and Scott Merkin conversed on Twitter last night about the Sox offseason. They speculated a signing of Zobrist, Cespedes, and they argued over whether trading Quintana could net a fair return. I was in that conversation with them. My handle is @JamesFox917. Merkin thought there was no shot of Cespedes for over $100 million.
-
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 27, 2015 -> 02:42 PM) It's not all bad though. Kind of offers the Sox protection in the draft. If they finish in the bottom ten, then the second rounder given up for Heyward is replaced by a better pick for losing Shark. Basically a free free agent if i understand correctly. Arguably the talent acquired in the trade would have been better than the pick but like you said, it is what it is. The White Sox are not signing Jason Heyward. Why do people keep talking about this? He's going to get $160+ million. Is that really something that anyone thinks the Sox will or should do?

QUOTE (jblastick @ Sep 27, 2015 -> 09:48 AM) Sorry if this has/is being discussed in another thread. With the Sox on the brink of becoming the equivalent of what the Clippers were in LA for two decades, it's time to pay John McDonough anything it takes to get him here. The Sox (and the Bulls for that matter) lack vision and direction (our GM admitted that the way the Sox are going about business is more difficult than typical!) and McDonough has proven that he can make teams relevant. The Hawks were an afterthought in Chicago before he and Rocky took over. The Sox are on very thin ice in this town. The Cubs, to their credit, are built for sustained success and it's going to be a challenge to generate interest in the South Side. Winning of course helps and I'm not saying McDonough fixes that but the Sox need revenue and being relevant would create more dollars. John McDonough doesn't turn the Blackhawks around without Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, etc. Those guys were there when he took over. He's good at his job but lets not get crazy here. The Hawks have 3 of the 12 best players in the NHL.

Southsider brought up Matt Wieters and I scoffed at the suggestion because of the QO. Rumors out of Baltimore, according to Heyman are that he may not receive one. If he doesn't get a QO, the White Sox should be all over Wieters. Could be an interesting option.

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 01:51 PM) This is a disgrace. Kindly move somewhere far away and burn all your indian head attire. Blackhawks fans should be better than this. I don't have any Indian Head Attire. I made a joke about Julie DiCaro because she's bad at her job and she usually speaks when my radio is on. It was in poor taste but it was tongue in cheek. I don't really care. Relax.

Some disturbing Sox numbers…yet the status quo remains
Y2Jimmy0 replied to captain54's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 12:51 PM) And without them, they have no chance at all. That is the difference. Completely agree. I'd argue that Toews/Keith are the two most important people in the franchise. They could "live" without Kane but I agree with the premise. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 12:34 PM) Rodon = new Quintana? No. He'll get way more respect that Quintana. He was pretty much the consensus top player from last year's draft class.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 10:19 AM) Definitely easy to do when LaDunn isn't playing clogging up the DH spot. I think LaDunn may be offensive to Dunn. At least he hit homers. He had an awful 1st year with Sox but he made an All Star team in his 2nd season.
-
QUOTE (LDF @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 10:34 AM) dang it, what happen to cause him to do this/ He did it because the mother made up a story about the "bag" being dropped off at her house when she had it all along. The DA is pissed because the report made his office sound incompetent and that's just not true.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 25, 2015 -> 09:36 AM) Great, now the Blackhawks are THAT fanbase. Way to go guys. Chicago Sun-TimesVerified account @Suntimes Threats aimed at @670TheScore's @JulieDiCaro over Patrick Kane coverage keep her from work. http://chicago.suntimes.com/blackhawks-hoc...ick-kane-threat https://twitter.com/JulieDiCaro/status/6472...9752705/photo/1 At least I won't have to hear her stumble through updates today.

In Defense of Jay Cutler

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 24, 2015 -> 02:19 PM) I don't really care much for hypothetical positions being safer bets. LT has been no sure thing recently. Nothing hypothetical about it. I listed 5 players that I would draft before any of the QBs.
