Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa
Y2Jimmy0 replied to Rooftop Shots's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I thought that Semien profiled best as a utility player and Bassitt as a reliever so I think this is an awesome deal. Getting Samardzija to extend would put White Sox in contention for a long time. I was hoping that a package like this was all that it would take but I was skeptical. Great thread guys. -

If they move Danish, the org must feel like he's a reliever long term. -
I'd much rather have KRod on a short-term deal than Robertson for $50 million.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 01:34 PM) But of course, just signing James Shields for comparable money while holding Alexei makes us even better than that. Right but I'd rather have Samardzija than Shields at this point. Shields is 33 years old and will be getting a 5 year deal. No thanks. -
QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 12:48 PM) Meh. He doesn't have much of a track record and that's probably above market value for a #5. I think they could lose this deal quite easily. Surely could go either way though. Could be. That's not very much money if he pitches close to what he did last year. Obviously a candidate for regression though. Like it much better in the NL.

Jason Hammel back to the Cubs. 2 year $18 million. 3rd year option. Really good deal for them.

QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 8, 2014 -> 09:37 AM) Some who've spoken with Oakland re: Samardzija don't expect the A's to grant a negotiating window to any interested team. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/541978259609505794 I'd rather not have the negotiating window. The price will be less for a 1 year rental. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 7, 2014 -> 12:44 PM) Yet had FSU or OSU lost yesterday, Baylor would have benefited from NOT having a title game. Everyone is talking about The Big 12 going to a title game. I think it's a worthwhile gamble to not have one. For instance, if Ohio State and Florida State lose this weekend, Baylor and TCU probably both get in giving the Big 12 the chance to be represented twice. With a title game, you are only being represented once. Now would you rather have the title game and most likely put 1 representative in the tournament most years or would you gamble that you may have 2 undefeated teams or 1 loss teams at some point in which you have two representatives? I think the conference could decide to continue to not have a title game. -
Okay so be ready to call me out. I have long been a draft pick defender and advocate of not signing players with QO's attached. I'm still not advocating doing so but pondering a strategy. If the Sox sign David Robertson and give up their 2nd round pick, would it benefit to dip back into free agency this year for another QO free agent? If they were to sign two players with QO's, they would be giving up their 2nd and 3rd round picks. While just writing that statement makes me cringe a little bit, does it make sense to do it at this point?

Would the White Sox receive any sort of compensation at all? I know that Friedman just left for the Dodgers. When Epstein went to the Cubs, why did the Red Sox get compensation for that? -

I hope we get Alabama vs Ohio State and Mariota vs Jameis. That'd be awesome. -
QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Dec 6, 2014 -> 04:47 AM) We get Daz Cameron then eventually trade him for Nicholas Konerko. I was waiting for someone to make the joke. I'm sure it wouldn't matter but doesn't Mike Cameron hate the White Sox organization? Is hate too strong of a word? I remember his 4 HR game and him talking about it because he never wanted to be traded.
-
Brief snippet from Jayson Stark 10 trade candidates column sums up nicely from an executive exactly why Quintana has more value than Hamels: "Here's my take," said an official of one club that has traded an ace in the not-so-distant past. "I think the Phillies can make a good trade for Cole Hamels. I don't think it will be a grand slam. If he was making $5 million a year, then they might get a grand slam. But he's not. I think they can make a good trade, one that makes sense for both teams. But I think there are too many different starting-pitcher options available for a team to give up the kind of prospects they're asking and pay that money. Teams don't have to do that right now. And they're not going to do that."

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) Too early to make sweeping generalizations about recent drafts? You just called Fuller a cornerstone player after playing in less than one season. Very good point. My bad. I do a lot of NFL Draft work in my free time as a hobby though and I think Fuller was the best CB in the draft. His early success was not a surprise to me because I broke down like 5-6 of his games. I think Kyle Fuller will prove to be a cornerstone player. Should have stated it differently. -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 09:43 AM) If the bears are lacking in talent it falls on emery now, he has had three years to make progress on building the team and he has not. From this draft they have one player contributing, Fuller, two if you count the punter who is no great shakes. The defensive linemen may turn out but it has not shown so. Vareen and Carey have shown nothing, Leno allowed the PAT to be blocked yesterday and that is the first I have ever heard his name. Bostic, Brown, Mills, Washington and Wilson have not done anything to show they are anything better than just guys. Bostic has some talent but he misreads every play. Greene looks to have some talent. One player from the 2012 draft, Jefferey is the only hope there. McClellain is still on the team because he was a first round pick. Through three drafts he has Long and Jeffrey and hopefully Fuller who I hope is hurt because he has done little or nothing the last few weeks. He may be able to blame the coaching staff for not developing players but he hired them. He also was a reach hire as well. I disagree with much of this. It's too early to make sweeping generalizations about recent drafts. It's also lazy scouting. The Bears are in this position because of years and years of bad drafting by Jerry Angelo. The only way to get out of the mess is by years and years of good drafting by Phil Emery or whoever else. Just the way it is. -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 09:15 AM) There are bad football teams every year but the Bears are not coached they are simply not coached at all. Football is a good amount of game planning and coaching and you can tell the Bears have none of it. This is not a talent issue it is a coaching issue. Special Teams, Offense and Defense. From Ted Phillips on down they should all go and even if they do, they will replaced by a new set of incapable cheap options. Emery should have been fired after the Shea Mc pick, he got lucky with Long and really blew the coaching search worse thing I have seen since the Mike Smith / Alpo Blackhawk days. Emery's 1st draft was really bad. He only has Alshon Jeffery to show for it. That being said, Jeffery is a cornerstone player. The 2nd draft was better. Long is a stud. Bostic will be a starting caliber player at his natural WLB position as well. Greene looks like a bad pick but the Mills, Washington, and Wilson picks were all good with where they were taken. This past draft was his best so far. Fuller is another cornerstone player. Ferguson and Sutton should be defensive contributors for a long time. The book is still out on Brock Vereen and Charles Leno. Fales was a bad pick and I'd never ever draft a punter. They also snagged Christian Jones as an UDFA and he looks like he could develop into a nice player. Some bad picks, but Emery has also drafted 1 cornerstone player in each draft. His issues have been that 1st draft as a whole and hiring Marc Trestman. I agree with signing Cutler and Marshall so I'm not going to criticize those decisions now. I believe that Emery dumps the entire coaching staff and stays on board for the near future. He can't afford to go 1 more year with Trestman because if it's bad again, he's gone as well. Just my thoughts. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 09:10 AM) I think part of it is linked to Jay's reputation in the City and his mental state. It seems like whenever Jay falls under some criticism, they dial the offense back to the short passes to protect his psyche. Otherwise, he tends to start just winging the ball all over the place, interceptions ensue, and it just sort of snowballs. That is really my only explanation, other than Trestman just not having a clue how to make adjustments. There are many reasons. WR injuries early in the year. Penalties. The OL has been pretty bad. Cutler is a good QB but not a great QB that will rise above all else when everything else is bad. The play calling has been really bad as well. No speed threat. No semblance of a running game and no interest in having one. Too many turnovers. This is an extremely poorly coached team that lacks talent in many areas dating back to bad drafting. Many, many issues. -

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) Yes, as in when the Red Sox call about Sale, Hahn says that the package starts with Pedroia, Nava and Owens, and then the conversation is over. I would start it with Betts, Bogaerts, and Owens but yes.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 06:32 AM) Random text from my bro-in-law from CA last night, "This Conte guy is terrible" Sums it up perfectly. Conte is the best Safety on the roster too. Think about that. -
The Challenge: Battle of the Exes II starts in January. Ryan Knight and Diem Brown are both in it.

If the draft played out like that I'd probably take Bickford or Daz Cameron.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 12:39 PM) When Sale pitches at home, it's $20, $15 on Sundays with a t shirt to sit in the K-Zone.(Or anywhere else you may find yourself) And that it is never sold out, shows the whiney Sox fans who use excuses about pricing and lower deck excess, are just full of hot air. Every time the White Sox come up with something that cancels out a common complaint, like the upper deck (fixed), the blue seats, (fixed), cheap lower deck access (fixed) they come up with something else. As someone who goes to a lot of games, I prefer it not crowded myself, it is pretty comfortable. Sacrificing comfort for a better team though is an easy call. Dick this is a great point. I love the fact that I can buy tickets for cheap the day of the game and head out with nobody there. I would gladly pay more $$ and sit with 40,000 people if the team was awesome though. -

I saw Sale vs Scherzer last year $7. Tickets really aren't that expensive at all. If you are bringing kids and a wife or GF and buying a ton of s*** then yes it's expensive but not much more expensive than going to the movies is.
