    2014 TV thread

Emmy Nominations come out today and Actor in a TV Series is going to be All Time Ridiculous: Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Matthew McConaughey (True Detective), Woody Harrelson (True Detective).
  2. Some anonymous Red Sox players dumped all over Pierzynski on his way out: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/...asyleaguegm.com I'm not surprised that AJ wasn't the best teammate but some of that stuff isn't really his job. Where was that Giant Smiling Syringe Ortiz at? I thought he made everyone feel better.
  3. I don't want anyone that costs the Sox a first round draft pick.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) The question you're dancing around is...assuming the Bulls have missed on Anthony, what player could they feasibly get that fills your requirements, and would that actually make them competitive for the title in the east? Hard for me to see the answer to the 2nd of those being yes for just about any random solid but unspectacular shooting SF. If it's Ariza, Gasol, Mirotic, and McDermott, I think they can win the East. Remember that Derrick Rose will be back people. That team is good for an ECF appearance.
  5. I think bringing back AJ would be a terrible idea. Why are so many people interested in doing that? He isn't hitting and he's awful defensively. He also didn't get along too well with Ventura. I don't see it happening.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:37 AM) Does anyone know how the amnesty rule works in NHL? I imagine it's gonna happen in the next few years with Hossa. I believe if he retires early before 2021, the Hawks could face some major cap penalties. And the Crawford deal still sucks. Yes they can amnesty Hossa at some point if necessary. Pay his salary but won't count against the cap. I think they are allowed to use the provision twice.
  7. Heyman detailed 60 players that could be available at the deadline. Lots of White Sox as expected. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-he...go-or-have-gone
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:43 AM) Defensively Kyrie-Waiters-James-Love Verajao (but realistically their backup C due to injury) is possibly worse than rockets with only 1 plus defender (James) Kyrie-Wiggins/James-TT-Verajao(but really backup C) is still not great. That would all really depend on Wiggins development. Kyrie still has yet to be as great as people assume he is, to me he's nothing more than a streaky shooter and capable ball handler on a bad team that increases his usage rate. I wouldn't trade Wiggins for Love. I think Wiggins is going to be a star and Love is empty calories to me. Somebody has to get those points on that terrible team. He's good. Just not worth the max contract that he wants.
  9. Some of the Mets pitching prospects to the Cubs for a SS makes too much sense in my opinion. I agree with an earlier poster about the pitching staff. They have Arrieta and Wood. If they got Wheeler for one of their SS and signed Masterson or Lester, they'd have a pretty decent rotation. They have like a $30 million payroll. I'm pretty sure they will spend a little next year.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:36 AM) And his June numbers still are pretty similar to the year Mitchell had in AA when he was supposedly "rushed" to AAA. Davidson should finish out the minor league season, then see if he is worthy of a September call up. Other than the leading the league in homers part. Aren't Davidsons doubles and homers numbers about the same as his minor league career still?
  11. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) Kyrie's better than anything he ever had in Cleveland. Honestly, I think Lebron, Varajao, Wiggins, and Irving is better than Lebron, Bosh, and Wade at this point.
  12. David Kaplan reported yesterday that it sounds like Kane and Toews will be getting rough;y $10.8 million per season.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 10:41 PM) You're right, Aiken has no leverage at all. He either signs for $5 mill, or he goes JuCo, in which case he's not getting drafted that highly again for at least 2 years, or he goes D1 and then he can't get drafted for 3 years. He HAS to sign. It's a goodwill offering by the Astros that they're giving that much. Appel did have a little less leverage than Rodon. So long as Boras has not had direct negotiations with the Sox, he can go back, but you can point to what Appel got as a senior draft pick #1 overall. It's still 99.9999%. The most that the Pirates could offer Appel was like $3.2 million. He went back to school and got over $6 million I believe. Rodon will get $6 million now and most likely won't next year.
  14. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 02:30 PM) This really should not be a shock. Anderson oozes potential, but his lack of defense and poor K-to-BB rate will cause him to drop in many eyes. Everyone else in our system has major flaws. Rodon no doubt would be there, if eligible. the guys at BP love Anderson. They think he may end up at 2B, but they love the power potential as a Brandon Phillips type player. Anderson didn't even crack the BP Top 101 in tyne offseason and Parks talked about regretting that after seeing him more. Now he's up to #38.
  15. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) That's fine, they can bluff all they want up until the deadline, but the Sox should not budge and at that point Rodon is an idiot if he refuses to sign. There is no reason the Sox should increase their offer as the deadline approaches. i don't necessarily agree. We don't know what the Sox offer is. If it's the slot amount of $5.7, then yes they absolutely should budge. But we have no idea.
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) First of all, I doubt the difference is $250-500K. I'm guessing the difference at this point is closer to $1-2 mill. If it were as small as the original numbers, they'd take a few hours and iron out their differences. Also, if I were Rick Hahn, I'd counter with "You are getting $6 milllion. If you think he's going to get significantly more than that next year, you're crazy." There is no way that they are $1-$2 million off. the slot amount is $5.7 million. The Sox literally only have like $6.5 million left. It's not old system. There just isn't any magic money that can be spent. I bet they are quibbling over the difference between the remaining Sox slot money, something just over $6 million and the overage without incurring the draft pick loss which would be over $6.5 million. He will sign. He won't get $6 million next year.

  18. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 12:17 PM) Not many pitchers are worth $100M per year. And it won't be packed till they're winning. A lot of casual Cubs fans I know HATED that deal and told me they're done with prospects and want to just win a couple games. The more baseball fanatic ones get excited, but the casual ticket buying fan couldn't give a f*** until they're at least in playoff hunts. Cubs fans that hate that deal are stupid. Those same fans that hate it will be back when the team is winning though. I always ask people if they like Jake Arrieta. Or Kris Bryant. If they say yes, then they have to like the current plan in my opinion. You can't be overly excited about the prospect of a Kris Bryant and gaga for Arrieta and be pissed that Samardzija and Hammel got traded. Arrieta and Bryant and all those other guys wouldn't be in the organization without the current plan. If people were smart, this is exactly the time that they would buy Cubs season tickets.
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) We know they aren't going to eat the contract. What does he make the second half of his final season anyway? 10 million? No team is going to pay that for Mr. Whiff. He's not the kind of guy a team needs. If a team is a contender by now, they probably have somebody way better than Dunn. He's still on base at like a .360 clip. Offers LH power. You don't care about this because you only remember him striking out. Mr. Whiff is clever though. Instead of thinking about clever nicknames, do some research and some simple math and find out the guys on the Sox that have committed more outs than Dunn has this year. But hey whatever fits the narrative.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) At about that time they will be trying to reverse nearly 10 years of falling attendance. And they don't have the cash, otherwise they wouldn't have lowballed Smarj and then needed to trade him. This isn't true though. That place will be packed as soon as next year when the kids are there. They didn't want to sign Samardzija. They offered him that lowball deal so that he'd turn it down and they could trade him. He is already going to be 30 and not worth $100 + annually. They could have signed Samardzija. They chose not to.
  21. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 05:06 PM) It amazes me that guys continue to refuse to get help and sacrifice millions upon millions of dollars. Two of the most talented WRs in recent memory (Blackmon and Gordon) and neither of them will be suiting up on Sundays this year. Who knows? Maybe never again. Just think: If they would have just beaten their wives or girlfriends instead of doing drugs & alcohol, they'd be playing football this year.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 10:18 AM) Counting on those guys is just like a Sox fan expecting anything out of Micker Zapata. High school arms are notoriously difficult to project. Keep in mind, Straily's gone through something of an Erik Johnson season of his own. His velocity has mysteriously dipped from the 90's to around 88. Until they show the ability or willingness to sign/trade for/acquire one of the BIG FOUR (Scherzer/Lester/Shields/Price), nobody's going to buy into the Cubs Kool Aid. If you subtract Danks from the Sox rotation, they're in virtually the same place payroll-wise, but I'm sure the White Sox aren't going to be willing to give up a $100+ million contract to one of those four pitchers regardless. No it's really not. It's the same as a Sox fan expecting anything out of Tyler Danish and Spencer Adams. The Cubs have guys like Eloy Jimenez and Gleiber Torres that you could compare to Micker Adolfo but I never did that.
  23. QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 6, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) funny seriously does anyone really think we can trade dunn for anybody viable? I say let him stay, and leave when his contract is up. I think he has done all he can do esp as a clubhouse presence. Yes. Dunn will get you a decent prospect in return if you eat the contract. I'm guessing the Sox will deal him for for two high upside types in A ball that are in the teens of someone's system and take the salary relief though. Dunn can help a playoff contender. Not sure why people think he can't.
  24. Lots of real stupid going on in this thread. I don't understand it. The Cubs have like a $30 million payroll. I think they will spend a little this offseason and you will see Bryant, Baez, Alcantara, and probably even Russell at some point next season. The Cubs don't have any pitching thing is false as well. They don't have immediate front of the rotation pitching. They have a ton opt depth though. The Cubs don't have a Carlos Rodon but I'd argue that they have more pitching depth than the White Sox do in their system. The Cubs already had : CJ Edwards, Pierce Johnson, Duane Underwood, Kyle Hendricks, Paul Blackburn, and Tyler Skulina to name a few. In the draft they added: Stinnett, Dylan Cease, Carson Sands, and Justin Steele. They also have a couple late inning type relievers in Arodys Vizcaino and Armando Rivero at AAA Iowa. Not to mention the young bullpen arms in their ML bullpen. The big name hitting prospects are the reason why they have the #1 system in baseball but the pitching in the system is underrated in my opinion.
  25. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 5, 2014 -> 03:30 PM) Any contender that wants Dunn will not be a contender much longer after acquiring him. He'll be a Sox the remainder of the season IMO. This comment makes me want to go all taylorStSox on you but I like reading the site too much.
