The Official 2014 Opening Day thread
Y2Jimmy0 replied to southsider2k5's topic in 2014 Season in Review
Daryl Van Schouwen @CST_soxvan 4m Ventura said Konerko might get Opening Day start at DH over Dunn because it will be his last one. "It's a possibility,'' he said. Well Greg will be happy. -
How much $$ will we get for Dunn when we inevitably trade hi

QUOTE (greg775 @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) Damn. Just bench Dunn. Bring Davidson up. Let him bat! Can't. White Sox kept a mascot on their active roster instead. -

The Twins will be starting Ricky Nolasco on opening day, Does everyone think that the Sox will go with the "everyday" lineup consisting of Flowers and Viciedo, or may they go with Nieto and De Aza with the RH on the mound? -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) I just want to point this out, something to think about... Adrian Nieto last year, age 23, 6th MiLB year, High A: .282/.371/.446, 11 HR, 18.3% K/PA Kevan Smith last year, age 24, 3rd MiLB year, High A: .286/.370/.484, 12 HR, 14.9% K/PA Offensively, I am not convinced Nieto is any better than Smith at this point. In fact I'm fairly sure I'd take Smith's bat over Nieto. Defensively, Smith was considered raw, but also has improved and there are positive reports about his pitcher handling. His CS% in 2012 (2013 I can't find) was 33%, and he had 14 PB in 92 games. Nieto is considered better defensively overall, and the pitchers seem to like him in camp (which is big), but.... His CS% in 2012 (I can't find 2013 data) was 32%. He had 14 PB in 85 games. Numbers aren't the full story of course, especially with catchers. But looking at the body of work, I am not sure Nieto is any better as a total package than Kevan Smith would be. Similar hit and OBP results, Smith more power, Smith better contact rate, similar CS% numbers, and defensively I think Nieto may be at best only slightly better. And Nieto has had 3 more years to develop. Why are people convinced Nieto is ready for the majors and Smith isn't? I think it helps that Nieto hits left-handed as well.

I think I would call Mike Rizzo everyday and offer him Adam Dunn for Adrien Nieto.

Jose Quintana extened thru 2018 - 5 yrs, $21.5 or $26.5 mill
Y2Jimmy0 replied to Feeky Magee's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) Who was the last pitcher of any age to sign an 8 year deal? CC Sabathia? I think Felix signed a 7 year extension with the M's at one point, so he was locked up at a high price for 8 years. The difference between those guys and Scherzer is that they were in their mid 20s and still getting better. Scherzer has had 1 really good season and he's going to be 30 years old next year. I hear you. He's already like 30, right? It's still ridiculous but I bet he can get more. -

QUOTE (oldsox @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 07:32 AM) Sherzer = the epitome of the greedy athlete. Supposedly he turned down a 6 year deal to get 8 guaranteed years. He can probably get 8 on the open market actually. -
Tyler Flowers is your 2014 starting catcher

Scott Merkin @scottmerkin 1m Quintana agrees to five year extension potentially worth $26.5 million. Dan Hayes @DanHayesCSN 1m Guaranteed money in Jose Quintana's deal is contingent on arb status. If he qualifies for super two, it's $26.5 mil. If not, $21.5'mil. Dan Hayes @DanHayesCSN 1m #WhiteSox give Jose Quintana 5-year, $26.5 mil extension. Deal has options for $10.5 mil for '19, $11.5 mil for '20. (1/2) -
QUOTE (southside hitman @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) "SS Tim Anderson: Body beautiful; plus athlete; swing is silky smooth, loose and easy; a hands hitter who attacks the ball out front and can drive it; very impressive hand-eye at the plate; natural ability to square up the ball; hit tool is going to be plus; power could be late to arrive but could also be plus; defense at short is shaky despite quick-twitch athleticism; wasn’t quick in his reactions to the ball; actions were a little stiff; arm looked average to solid-average; not as fast as I originally thought, more 55/60 run." That's all I can see as a unsubscribed reader, does anyone have the rest of the content? It's not much more than that. He says that he could be average defensively at SS and above average at 2B. Role 6 ceiling with a natural hitting skills that should make him a top prospect.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 09:38 AM) Um, we turned a 3rd round draft pick (Addison Reed) into the teams probable future starting 3B for the next 6ish years, at a cost that will probably be around $14 million TOTAL. That is why you don't forfeit draft picks without a damned good reason to do so. This deal is exactly the value play that everyone is talking about. Excellent Post.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 09:24 AM) I get a kick out of everyone kicking Reed saying he won't be anything special, but once you start mentioning forfeiting the second round pick, guys like Reed, because he was a 3rd rounder IIRC, suddenly get mentioned as guys you don't want to lose the opportunity to acquire by signing someone their former team feels is worth at least $14 million for a season. The bottom line is if Davidson sucks, the deal wasn't worth it. It is up to him. There is some team out there that would have given up a useful piece for Reed. The White Sox felt Davidson was that piece. If he is a below average 3rd baseman, they aren't going to be happy about it. Dick, it's not even that he won't be anything special. He's just a reliever. The Sox can develop those. Relievers also get way overpaid in the arbitration process because of the save stat. If Nate Jones has a tremendous season, I would still trade him for 6 guaranteed years of control for a young catcher or LF that the team feels like can be a starter. If Davidson busts, it was still a good trade. It just wouldn't have worked out. There's a big difference in my opinion.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 09:24 PM) Those tweets are pure music. The '13 draft has a chance to be a goldmine. In the BP article, Parks states that he thinks Tim Anderson will be best suited at 2B though but says that he has no doubt that his hit tool is + and he has a chance to develop + power sometime into his ML career. He said that Anderson should have been in the top 100. He also raved about Miles Jaye, saying he should have definitely been in the White Sox top ten.
-
Jason Parks @ProfessorParks 4h #WhiteSox RHP Myles Jaye working 92-95 w/ FB showing good late arm side life; SL at 81-83 with long wipeout break. Liking this a lot. Frasor for Jaye and Webb was a really good trade.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) I sense that there are a few regular posters here who are grieving over the release of Boggs, since they were very enthusiastic over his signing. I liked the Boggs signing. He was pretty bad though. Didn't have the stuff he used to have.
-
QUOTE (chisoxfan310 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 11:24 AM) I see Cleto making it over Putnam for sure but I wouldn't mind Purcey as a long reliever/third lefty in the pen considering we really don't have any long-reliever options left if both Webb and Cleto make it. Webb will be up by mid-season easily anyway. At this point, I would go with Jones, Belisario, Lindstrom, Downs, Veal, Cleto, and Webb. Let Petricka close at Charlotte.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) Also, how are guys like Zach Putnam and Blake Tekotte still there? Well both guys are non-roster invitees. The release of MItchell Boggs does take the 40 man to 39 though.

Roster Moves today Colleen Kane @ChiTribKane 4m White Sox announce moves: Davidson, Jordan Danks, and Petricka to AAA. Axelrod to minor league camp. Plan to release Boggs.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 09:24 AM) All the more reason to then. Hawk is a boob. There is no doubt taking a high school pitchers presents a huge risk because of their age, lack of playing top competition, overuse, maturity, on and on, but if you're scouts say the high school kid is the BPA, you take him despite him being a high school pitcher. As evidenced by his various gripes against sabermetrics, Hawk's opinion these days is about as valuable as a nickel. Absolutely. Tyler Beede is probably going to be a solid #2 starter. If the Sox think that Kolek or Aiken will be #1 starters, then my philosophy is to take the HS arm. Not sure that they will and I know some people will differ with me on that. It's just 2 different philosophies. The people that say to take the most sure thing college arm aren't wrong either. Should be an interesting few months.

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 06:47 PM) Saw Hawkins bat a few times today. He has no plate coverage at all. Unless it's on the inner-half, I can't see how he makes contact. I have been kind of an apologist for Hawkins but he had two horrible at-bats yesterday. He looked completely lost.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 04:58 PM) So are they really back to looking at Axelrod as a 5th starter, with Surkamp and Rienzo out of camp for now? I'd almost rather see Beck working with Cooper for one year and going through all those struggles than that. Heck, might as well start Boggs or Cleto. No. Paulino will be the 5th starter. He has looked good at times. He will go into the season in the rotation and go from there.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ Multiple outlets are reporting that the Marlins are talking about trading RHP Jacob Turner due to their pitching depth. Would anyone here deal Viciedo for Turner? Turner is arbitration eligible in 2015 and doesn't hit free agency until 2018. The Diamondbacks are one team linked to Turner in talks with the Fish.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 20, 2014 -> 11:06 AM) Cust was also fat, slow, and terrible defensively. Baez plays 2B/SS and is 46 of 55 for his career in stolen bases. Baez should be a regular at the MLB level. Regular? I'll go with 1st division player. The guy is going to hit 30+ bombs a year and play in the middle infield. I know as a Sox board many of us love to pretend that some of these Cubs prospects aren't exciting but I refuse to take part in it. Wite, this is by no means a shot at you, I'm just saying. I usually cringe in the Cubs thread because of the stuff I see.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Mar 20, 2014 -> 02:40 AM) Like the poster above stated, it's all about service time. Plus, Gillaspie didn't really have all that bad of a rookie year... Did he? The problem is that Gillaspie should probably only face RHP. If Keppinger could play 3B and they went with a straight platoon, it'd be fine. Ventura would let Gillaspie face a LHP so often last year though. Look at his splits.
