  1. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) Has Konerko ever been more talented than Dunn? Seriously. I am glad someone else said it. To answer your question: No. Dunn has always been the more productive player. I understand why White Sox fans don't like Dunn but he was one of the most consistent players in the game for like an 8 year stretch before joining the Sox.
  2. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 12:04 PM) C'mon man. If you look at it through the casual fan's eye it makes sense. The casual fan absolutely hates Dunn with a passion. They don't say "Oh 30 hrs at the end of the year, nice." You always hear something like "that motherf***er strikes out or fails every time I see him bat" or "why the f*** can't he get over his self-quoted 'stupid, stubborn ways' and learn to hit the baseball away from the shift." This is the casual fan. Not my opinion but what you hear on the streets, at the game, at backyard bbqs, playing bags etc. How can you pretend this line of thinking isn't everywhere in Chicago? It doesn't make sense on any level? That's ludicrous man when you know damn well the city generally despises him more than any Sox I can think of in recent memory. I'd even try to argue Dunn's presence results in tickets not being sold. It's still illogical. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 03:12 PM) Yes, but if you weren't earmarking that for the pick and going to go cheap on that pick just to spread that amount around later, it even further decreases it's value, at least player-wise. So I take it pretty much a wash since you wouldn't be paying that player anyway. I can understand a team walking away from signing a free agent because they would lose their first round pick. But not solely because they lose the 2nd rounder. IMO, the Sox thought they could get Granderson fairly reasonably earlier, but with the QO out there, they probably realize they could not. I also think they put Granderson's worth at more than just his numbers. I think he was/is the type of veteran they would like influencing the young guys. Exactly. The Sox have roughly $9.5 million for the draft. If that pick is worth $1.4 million our whatever it is, you lose the ability to spend that money. That really hurts the Sox chances of going under slot in Round 2 or 3 and grabbing a lot of wildcard over slot guys in later rounds. It just hurts the overall flexibility and Granderson's impact would not justify the move in my opinion.
  4. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 16, 2013 -> 12:08 AM) The guy struck out way too much. Hahn gets it, though. Granderson strikes out more…..
  5. QUOTE (toasty @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 10:46 PM) I actually think that if the Sox could get some kind of return for Dunn, while paying a bit, there actually is indeed a good fit for AJ. He could be used as DH if not catching. LH bat and decent contact hitter. not to mention the impact on the clubhouse and fans. Not sure why you insist he cannot come back. It's not necessarily a high possibility, but stranger things have happened. Ventura and AJ did not get along very well during AJ's final season in Chicago. He questioned RV's authority on multiple accounts according to reports from soon after AJ left town. I don't think Robin would be on board with AJ returning and some of his teammates would most likely feel the same way. I think the impact on the clubhouse would be a negative one.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) I love how Luhnow gets brought up constantly as the voice of scouting wisdom on Abreu, because they were supposedly 2nd in the bidding. That's not exactly a glowing endorsement at this point in time. Now if Mozeliak said something like that.... And it doesn't mean they're actively shopping Viciedo or Ramirez, it just means they're not untouchable and Hahn is willing to listen. I would be pretty shocked if Viciedo or Ramirez is traded before next July. Why doesn't Lunhow have a ringing endorsement? Have you checked out Houston's system lately? They are absolutely loaded. I am actually very excited that Houston, Texas, and Boston were all in on Abreu as well.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 10:48 AM) I think there will be at least a $10 million a year difference in PKs and Adam Dunn's contracts for 2014 (If PK plays). If the Sox aren't planning on competing, and someone will give you something to move Dunn, you take the savings, and the player no matter how small, and move on. It isn't something that HAS to be done, but if it lines up, you do it. Okay. That makes sense. The Sox are not going to eat any money to trade Dunn though. People on this board have suggested that the Sox should eat Dunn's money, take a bag of balls in return, and then sign Paul Konerko. Doesn't make sense.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 12:12 AM) I think that's exactly what came out of the interview. He said he talked to many players and I think you have captured the message. I think he wants to play if he has the skills to do a reasonable job. I don't know why his power has been completely zapped. Weird. Exactly. Maybe because he's in his late 30's and most likely never used PED's. That is most likely the cause of his power being "zapped".
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 10:29 AM) If the top is more than $10 mil, and/or longer than 3 years, I will be upset. I would be more upset if it were a 2 year deal actually. Why would you trade a 2nd rd draft choice and the $$ slotted to that spot for a guy on a short term deal? Qualifying Offers will really hurt some of these players.
  10. 1. Why can't people let go of AJ Pierzynski? He's not coming back. Stop suggesting it. 2. Why do people want to dump Adam Dunn so that the Sox can re-sign Paul Konerko? It doesn't make any sense. PK is Right handed which is one issue. He's also bad which is a 2nd problem. Dunn had a better year than PK last year. In fact, there aren't many seasons in which Konerko's year was better than Dunn's year. I am willing to bet that Dunn's season next year will be better than Paul Konerko's season next year as well. Come on guys. These things don't make any sense. The Sox already have a mascot. They don't need another one and that is what Paul Konerko would be at this point.
  11. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 08:39 AM) It wouldn't shock me if we sign Granderson. It isn't, on its face, a horrible decision. It would absolutely blow my mind if we gave him $70M Actually, it is a horrible decision. Bad teams with bad farm systems don't trade draft $$ and a top 50 pick for 30+ year old veterans on short term deals. I don't care that he's from here. 90% of this board hates Adam Dunn because he strikes out and I feel like some of those same people want Granderson.
  12. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 11:13 AM) Why do you think this? I think this because he had 79 walks, 34 homers, and 189 K's last year on a god awful team that offered him absolutely zero protection in the lineup. Is he overpaid? Absolutely. Is he much worse than he was when he was younger? Yes. LH power is still important though. Adam Dunn has never been the perfect player and he is way past stretching the value of a true 3 outcome guy's usefulness. But to just dismiss the possibility is crazy. There aren't many guys in baseball that have the chance to hit 40 homers next year. He's one of them.
  13. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 09:26 AM) I would rather take a chance on Marlon Byrd. He was really good and one of the 20 best outfielders in the game last year. Adam Dunn is a guy who about half the time will strike out, walk, or homer. The scary thing to me about Dunn is that a lot of his peripherals remained the same or actually improved, and his overall numbers got worse. He offers absolutely nothing defensively. Literally, the only thing you can count on him to do is be a relatively productive hitter against right handed pitching. Dunn has virtually no value to any other team right now. Just hang on to him and hope to deal him at the deadline. That's not entirely true. If Dunn were in Texas or on the Yankees next year as a #6 hitter, I bet he would walk 80-100 times, hit between 34-40 bombs, and K a ton of times. How is that not worth it? The problem is, Dunn shouldn't be a team's best hitter or primary run producer. What he brings is still very valuable, however. He can still change a baseball game in one swing.
  14. I didn't know if this needed it's own thread but it looks like the Sox will have about $9.5 million to spend on their first 10 picks in June. http://mlbdraftprospects.blogspot.com/2013...r.html?spref=tw
  15. Dan Hayes ‏@DanHayesCSN 1h #WhiteSox have spoken to Paul Konerko. Sounds as if there's a spot open for him if he wants it. But he hasnt indicated his plans. Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 41m I always believed if Konerko wanted to return for '14, there would be a spot for him with the White Sox--as there should be. I have made my thoughts on this clear. Really stupid decision in my opinion. I hope Reinsdorf is behind this move because it would make me question Rick Hahn's judgment.
  16. Sounds like Houston will listen on Jason Castro....Might be expensive though http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-he...ing-star-castro
  17. QUOTE (Baron @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 05:27 PM) Maybe not over 1 year but more security No team is going to give up a high pick to sign him to a short term deal though. It doesn't make any sense. Some of these guys will end up like Kyle Lohse and Michael Bourn waiting forever to get a deal.
  18. QUOTE (dayan024 @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 05:19 PM) Phil Rogers ‏@philgrogers 2m With @cgrand14 rejecting the Yankees' qualifying offer, he's definitely on White Sox radar. Strong support within baseball ops I just replied and told Phil he's crazy. Rogers has had a hard-on for Grandy for years. My buddy was Curtis Granderson's roommate at UIC. He would be shocked if it happened. Not willing to give up draft selection. Bucket or Rock, are you hearing anything on this?
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 10:15 AM) I think Sox will bring AJ back. I do not. One person on this board would be ecstatic though.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 10:10 AM) Pretty much. November is a good month to just ignore the rumors because it's all posturing and propaganda before the Winter Meetings. 4 weeks until then. This is usually the case, but Sox have made deals at GM meetings before. I believe that Freddy for Floyd/Gio deal was a GM meetings deal.
  21. Does anyone think there is real interest between the White Sox and Salty now that the beat writers are covering it? Is it just speculation or do the beat guys know it's something that may go down? Dan Hayes ‏@DanHayesCSN 31m Jarrod Saltalamacchia and the #WhiteSox appear to be a good fit for each other. Here are a few reasons why. http://www.csnchicago.com/white-sox/saltal...e-fit-white-sox.
  22. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 9, 2013 -> 02:22 PM) Why would you be upset? Everybody admits he can still hit lefties. It's not like Dunn is some magical bat. Let Paulie and Dunn DH if you can't trade Dunn and let Abreu DH once in a while and let Paulie play first. I'd cut Dunn's at bats in half until his contract runs out. Adam Dunn hit five homers in August and four in September. It's not like he's still raking. Do I need to put this in all caps for you? Konerko is done. There is no scenario in which it is a good idea to have Abreu, Dunn, and Konerko on the roster. Dunn/Konerko cannot be one of the spots on a 4 man bench. It's just stupid. Even if they traded Dunn, keeping Konerko would be dumb because they are way too RH then. Let it go, man. I enjoyed watching Paulie's career too but those days are over.
  23. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 9, 2013 -> 07:41 AM) I think a Konerko decision was made the day we signed Abreu. Dunn is the better player right now (plus left-handed) and there is simply no room for Paulie on a 4 man bench. And you know Robin would give Konerko a decent amount of playing time at the expense of Abreu. In all honestly, bringing him back doesn't make any sense and I'm sure Hahn agrees. This is spot on. I will actually be pretty upset if the Sox bring Konerko back. It's pointless. Sometimes it's just over and that time is now.
  24. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Nov 7, 2013 -> 08:41 AM) ESPN scouting report on Turner "Turner has elite speed and should be able to stick at shortstop, but there might not be much offensive upside. " For the record, this is Keith Law's assertion. He did the write up for ESPN.
  25. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 02:45 PM) How are they planning to spend the money on international free agents if there's a clear cap? Solely on Cuban players (Abreu)? Another Cuban? Japanese or Korean? It's a bit misleading to act like we're suddenly going to be targeting the likes of Tanaka...I guess it just means we're actually going to start spending the maximum on Dominican players for a change (and we've already done that this year). The Sox will spend close to $5 million on International Bonus Pool of players and around $10 million on the draft. That's about $15 million of the budget right there. Say the Sox are budgeted at a payroll of about $105 million for opening day. I take this to mean that they would then only spend close to $90 million on the actual roster. That is fine with me and something I and many others have advocated for a long long time on this board. Being bad gives you the opportunity to spend more but it's still the team's money and they will still operate on a budget.
