  1. I think the Pittsburgh Pirates could be a potential match for Alexei Ramirez if they decide to trade him. I don't know think the Sox could snag of the Buccos top 4 prospects. Pittsburgh has frontline starting pitching prospects: Jameson Taillon, Gerrit Cole, and even Luis Heredia. Don't think you can get any of those guys. Also, their #4 prospect is OF Gregory Polanco. I don't really think that they could land him either. OF's Josh Bell and Barrett Barnes may be possible though. SS Alen Hanson is another top prospect for them. He may project to 2B. Not sure what the White Sox could conceivably get back but the Pirates need a SS and their system is deep enough to make a deal like that to make the playoffs while still keeping their long term future intact. I would target Alen Hanson, Josh Bell, and one of their minor league pitchers on the 2nd/3rd tear. Pitt could even throw in Jordy Mercer who could start at SS for the Sox for the time being.
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) Is the consensus that Mitchell will be a power reliever? In all, I'm content with the draft so far. Many people think that he is a power reliever. I had heard that he will get every opportunity to start. Keith Law is actually one of the guys that thinks he can stick as a starter. Law had Mitchell ranked as his #35 overall prospect. He had Tim Anderson at #37 overall.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2013 -> 02:08 PM) Ethier and Viciedo would make a great platoon This is actually true. I want no part of Ethier. He is a platoon player. He should not ever face a LHP. Just keep Dunn and let his contract expire next year. Why take on Ethier?
  4. QUOTE (staxx @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 05:39 PM) Seems like we're saving money to sign our two question marks Who are the two question marks? Michalczewski and whom? The TCU RH?
  5. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 05:15 PM) Michalczewski Did I get it right without looking? How do you say it though?
  6. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 02:13 PM) Oakland takes Bobby Wahl. I have seen him as high as 30. He may go back for his senior year. Keith Law mentioned that Bobby Wahl was looking for around $1.5 million or he'd go back to school.
  7. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:55 PM) Sox pick almost back up Rowdy Tellez-1B Bobby Wahl-RHP Wil Crowe-RHP AJ Puk-LHP Trey Michalczewski-3B Cavan Biggio-2B/3B They are all still there    Shows how much I know. I don't think there is much of a chance that Wahl or Puk will sign now. Wahl will just go back and play his senior year. Biggio, Michalczewski, or Tellez would all excite me but in all reality I don't know anything.
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:50 PM) Did the Sox get value for their third round pick in your opinion? Probably not. You aren't getting value for every pick though. You may take a couple of guys early that will sign easily so you can take other guys later. Why is this so hard to understand? Pretend that Mitchell went in round 3 then if you have too. Holy cow.
  9. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) Explain Andrew Mitchell who ranked anywhere from 49-62 in the fourth? Keith Law had Andrew Mitchell as his #35 overall prospect and Tim Anderson as #37.
  10. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:32 PM) GOOD READ ON ROWDY Summary The Story of Ryan Tellez began in the womb, when he earned the nickname "Rowdy", for the constant ruckus he caused inside his mother's stomach. The nickname stuck with Tellez his entire life, to the point where his own grandmother (allegedly) doesn't even know his real name. It is said, that at the age of three, Rowdy learned to ride a dirtbike, before he learned to read or speak. 14 years since, The Legend of Rowdy Tellez continues to grow, as does his massive stature. On this day, the 17-year-old Sacramento-native stands 1.8 Altuves tall, weighing in at 240 pounds. The powerful first baseman, and current USC Trojan commit, has been on most scout's radar since 2011, when he was named ESPN's Sophomore of the Year. As a junior, Rowdy continued to rake, with a trip-slash of .587/.673/1.013 and nine home runs, usually of the 400+ feet variety. The left-handed-hitting first baseman is known for his mammouth power and great work ethic. He's also shown potential for average-to-above-average plate discipline. He rocks the number 44, to honor his all-time favorite player, Willie McCovey. During the World Wood Bat Association's World Championship, in mid-October, Rowdy turned some heads by going 5-for-12 with three doubles, a triple, and a 9:0 K:BB ratio. UPDATE (6/2): Not much has changed. His still rests solely on his bat. There are definitely some holes in his swing, and I'm not in love with it. He tends to beat the ball into the ground sometimes, which could lead to stretches of weak contact in the future. However; the power and potentially above-average hit tool is too hard to ignore. Major League Floor A home run threat off the bench. Major League Ceiling Dude has some legitimate upside as a hitter. Best-case scenario, I could see him having a Paul Konerko-type career with the bat. Even though his swing has holes, I don't think he fits the typical strikeout-power, all-or-nothing hitter. Projected Draft Round With the 2013 MLB Draft slowly approaching, it's never too early to start looking at candidates for the Astros' second pick. Baseball America ranks him 36th overall on their big board. Jonathan Mayo left him off his top 50. Minor League Ball has him 26th overall. And Keith Law left him off his top 30. UPDATE (6/2): He could sneak into the first round, but is more likely to go in rounds two or three. He's definitely someone the Astros will consider at 2-1, if he's available. College Commitment: USC, Will He Sign? Indications are that he will sign, yes. In Keith Law's current chat, I asked if Tellez was a steal at this point. Law responsded that it would be in a softball draft. Okay then.
  11. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) Throws 97, lower arm angle, "#1 curveball in college baseball", projects as a reliever. Keith Law likes him. Keith also notes that many see him as a reliever.
  12. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) I would be fine with any of these guys but I would love Rowdy Tellez. Baseball America had him as high as #36 on their top 100. Daniel Palka just went to Arizona.
  13. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 12:19 PM) AJ Puk-LHP Jared King-CF Cavan Biggio-2B/3B Wil Crowe-RHP Rowdy Tellez-1B Trey Micahlczewski-3B Daniel Palka-1B Some guys I have my eyes on. I would be fine with any of these guys but I would love Rowdy Tellez. Baseball America had him as high as #36 on their top 100.
  14. Does anybody have any names that interest them for White Sox day 2? I am surprised that Oklahoma prep catcher Jon Denney is available still. I wonder if he will just go to school now. If he is signable that is the guy I want.
  15. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 07:01 PM) Isn't Keon Barnum a projected 1st baseman for us? Already giving up on him for Dom? Not the way this works.....You take the best player available. Dominic Smith is an advanced bat for a HS player.
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 06:29 PM) I wasn't overly impressed by the video I saw of Bryant. I don't think he'll stick at third and a .329 avg at San Diego State isn't all that great. 31 homers and 66 walks in 62 games though. Kris Bryant is the most sure thing in this entire draft. If they couldn't get Appel, this was the right move. Cubs have a system loaded with position players that quite frankly I am pretty jealous of.
  17. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 04:05 PM) With you on that one. I have kind of given up on Peterson falling but you never know. Peterson scares me though kind of. 6'0 1B that does not have a ton of power.... You like him?
  18. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) Next years draft class is suppose to be better. With that being said would it be crazy if a team in the mid-late first round drafted Manaea or Bickford and did not sign them. Theoretically, (although you can't be sure the 2014 draft class shapes up exactly as it stands now) the 20th pick next year should be more valuable next year than this year. I picked 20 as just a random number but you catch my drift. To put in other words, hypothetically speaking, say the 2013 draft class was superior to the 2012 class. Say the Pirates take Appel, knowing they cannot sign him, just to have two picks in 2013, the better draft class. Would the new regulations come into play in such a scenario? Doesn't your bonus pool go down for the current year though? Otherwise, many teams would do this. They would draft someone in the 1st round that is unsignable and then draft tough signs in round 2-5. I think you lose the bonus money for not signing your 1st pick. Last year, the Pirates only had the slotted $3.8 million available to offer Mark Appel. Once Mark Appel did not sign they were not able to recoup that money somehow. Now they do have extra money this year with 2 first rounders though.
  19. Man it is very very unlikely but Dominic Smith at #17 would be the best case scenario tonight. I didn't think the Sox had a chance at Hawkins last year and they got him though. I will keep my fingers crossed.
  20. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 03:04 PM) Are we supposed to think these moves are going to be the help we need to get over the top? Probabaly more about using too many pitchers yesterday then anything I wouldn't sit around waiting for the help we need to get over the top. I am excited for draft tonight, Blackhawks Cup run, and we are 49 days until Bourbonnais. The Peavy news has put me in full selloff mode.
  21. Does Justin Smoak interest anyone? Was a pretty well regarded prospect and just has not hit. I think he could be pryed away from Seattle. Also, Sale is the only player that could net the White Sox anything close to Jurickson Profar. Sox aren't getting Profar. He's one of the top 2-3 prospects in the game. As a matter of fact, I would have traded Elvis Andrus this past offseason to make room for Profar.
  22. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 03:25 PM) It's a little different at the top of the draft, though. He signed for 4.8 million, which is a ton of money. That left them with 3 extra million! The slot value drops down to 3.5 million by the time you get to the 5th selection, already. Correa still got top 3 money, which is all he could have hoped for and the Astros got a ton of extra cash. For a team like the Sox in the mid-round or later, the bonus is only shrinking around 50-100K per selection, around 2 million dollars and shrinking. Hard to make space when you're that strapped for cash and a significant discount basically puts the draftee a round lower, rather than just a couple picks like Correa. I understand what you are saying. I took your point the wrong way. Do you think Houston could "double dip" again though with talent and just roll the dice and take Gray/Appel and Manaea?
  23. QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 02:38 PM) Right. You'd basically have to take a second round type guy in the first to afford a first round type in the second. Hard to game this system. Jake, it can be done though. Look at Houston last year. They took a lesser player at #1 in Carlos Correa. However, Correa is still a nice talent. Then they double dipped and took HS pitcher Lance McCullers who many thought would not sign. They could have taken Appel at #1. I would have taken Byron Buxton. But I understand what they did.
  24. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 12:53 PM) So basically the best you can do is offer a player 9.99% over slot? With Bickford's situation, I don't know if he has a certain threshold where he needs to picked to sign or he'll go to college. I know Gray was in a similar situation out of HS. I am pretty sure Bickford will just to go to school. Manaea may also go back to school. However, if I were Houston I'd probably use most of my money to draft Appel and Manaea.
