Mayo's last mock has White Sox taking HS 1B Dominic Smith and Keith Law has them taking Jacksonville RHP Chris Anderson.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 11:47 AM) For me the name to watch is Phil Bickford. He can go anywhere from 8-30. He is a HS pitcher but he has the ceiling like Jered Weaver. I can see KC shocking everyone at #8. Wouldn't mind us picking him up. In fact, I prefer him to Chris Anderson, who I think we eventually end up with. Mayo and Law have both taken him out of their 1st round projection because of bonus demands.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 01:18 PM) Exactly, although I do agree with IowaSoxFan that the Mariners could look into reupping him before the end of the season. Are Montero and Justin Smoak done then? Is Morse playing the OF for them? Zunino will have the catcher the position on lockdown soon. If they sign Morales to be their DH then that leaves Montero and Smoak battling for 1B? Smoak may be a bust. Not sure if they are ready to give up on Montero though.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 12:09 AM) Against LHP...they might eventually have to try Gillaspie at 3B and Keppinger at DH. Or Casper Wells, that's the other option. But Keppinger has been hitting very well the last 2+ weeks, a shame to sit him now that he's finally gaining confidence. With the way this streak is going, Beckham will struggle mightily....then, by the time they go back to Keppinger, he'll have cooled off completely again. Actually this is bad too. Gillaspie should never play against LHP. I'd rather have Dunn face lefties then Gillaspie. At least Dunn might homer or walk.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 02:38 PM) Kenny Williams should yell at Hahn the way people want Ventura yelling at players. Somehow though I doubt Kenny has had a thing to do with baseball since he took his "promotion," I bet he's just been laying around on the beach, smoking cigars, drinking fine scotch, chasing tuna, etc. Hahn needs to get on the phone and let people know we're taking offers on just about everyone aside from Sale. You're only supposed to be under the radar when you're buying, not when you're selling. And please no one bring up Sergio as selling under the radar, that was like one time & all is forgiven. Do you really think he hasn't been on the phone daily? That is what GM's do. Little bit early to get good value on players though.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 31, 2013 -> 02:38 PM) That is a bunch of crap. Before interleague play, the Sox-Cubs played some exhibition game for charity during the season and it was packed and the whole city was going crazy for bragging rights. The Sox and Cubs even used their starters for five innings or so. Some families to this day have big-time arguments during holiday parties as my family did on the South Side when I was a kid. My dad, uncle and grandfathers who had different allegiances would scream at each other discussing the two teams and their ballparks. I think the Sox should be ashamed they loafed during the 3-game Cub series and lost all three. The lazy Sox millionaires should be embarrassed. Nice job, players and coaches alike to get their asses kicked by the Cubs 3 days. I hate the Cubs vs Sox series. It gives stupid people a platform. The bragging rights thing is so dumb. Win the damn division. As a matter of fact, the whole interleague thing is dumb without the same rules in both leagues.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 3, 2013 -> 10:58 AM) Except Dunn and Danks are still looming over our future VERY MUCH the next 1 1/2 years. Looking around the rest of the AL Central, there isn't a single contract worse than Dunn's or one riskier than Danks, although I'm sure Verlander, Mauer and Fielder will draw some arguments. KW also left the farm system in much worse shape than when he became a GM. The question is how much further we need to fall before there's light at the end of the tunnel? There are also legitimate concerns about Alexei Ramirez's contract, maybe not this season, but in the next couple of years. Not to mention Viciedo's worrisome OPS against RHP and the future of the catching position. We can get rid of Beckham and Flowers and DeAza, but then we still have to replace them, and none of those candidates exist inside our system AND are ready to make an impact in the next 2-3-4 months. Finally, we're left with pretty much no assets to trade that won't cripple this year's team...except for maybe Erik Johnson. So not sure if lucky would be the word I would use...having had to discount tickets this year to get roughly the same amount of attendance and inevitably behind last year's tv ratings as well. Another season like 2011 isn't going to be fun for anyone. Kenny left the system worse than when he inherited it. Kenny Williams also built a World Series champion and there is a banner hanging signifying it. The overall job probably was not good enough but I did get to see my favorite baseball team win a championship in my lifetime and KW is responsible for that.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 3, 2013 -> 08:08 AM) His OPS will be in the .600s shortly. Much like the bulk of our God awful roster. Not if he plays against RHP only like he should be Steve. He could put up an .800 ops in a platoon facing only RH's. I am hoping with Beckham back, Keppinger faces LHP, Gillaspie faces RHP.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 1, 2013 -> 11:12 AM) I'm not a fan of any of those outfielders personally. Especially Wilson. Stanek would be a great get if he falls. I also really like Gonzalez but it sounds like he isn't getting past Arizona. I wouldn't be surprised if the White Sox nab Dominic Smith if he falls, but once again he probably won't get past Philly. I have always been intrigued by Wilson. I liked him a lot coming out of HS. He's big and could be a star if he reaches his potential. It's tough to tell with Stanford hitters though because that coaching staff makes position players look for contact and hit line drives.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jun 1, 2013 -> 09:51 AM) Just heard on ESPN 1000, the ChiSox are into college pitchers and toolsy outfielders at pick #17. Jim Callis said they'd take Ryne Stanek if he falls or Alex Gonzalez from Oral Roberts who they scouted. Also have ties to Aaron Judge, Austin Wilson, and Phillip Ervin. Stanek is the most unrealistic choice, but he's probably my favorite. Yeah I heard the same interview. I think they go RHP unless someone falls. I just can't see the OF thing unless KW is in love with Stanford's Austin Wilson. But after last year's first round, nothing will really surprise me anymore.

How many years/dollars would you give to Granderson?
Y2Jimmy0 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
FWIW, my co-worker was Granderson's college roommate. I always ask him about the Sox possibility. He would go to the White Sox for less money if only bad teams in s***ty markets were offering him deals. I think his preference is to stay in NY though. -
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 1, 2013 -> 09:23 AM) I like the Colvin idea a lot. He sounds like he could come pretty cheaply via trade & he'd allow the Sox to jettison an extra OF, and some PT could come at Dunn's expense. Excellent idea. Dump Wells (he's still on the team right?) for his roster spot, give him Dunn's PA, and if he does well then you can release Dweezy so he has a shot at being a backup on a contender (because we wouldn't need him anyway) which would then open up another spot for a pitcher.... because bad teams need lots of spots available for extra pitchers. Okay, so who do we have to trade to bring Colvin in here? What do the Rockies need? Thornton straight up with the salary eaten, would that work? Is Colvin still essentially a platoon player that can't play vs RHP though? Maybe he has been better. I just didn't know. I know the Cubs new brass traded him almost immediately but he didn't fit the profile of the high .obp type guy that they are interested in.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 31, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) I can't find the quote, but IIRC, Doug Laumann went out of his way a few weeks ago to say that the catchers in the Sox organization were better than the top catchers in this draft. Oh okay. Thanks for the info. Draft time is so different now because of last year's draft. Taking the HS players high, I won't rule out anything anymore. But that is a good reason. The only thing that would really surprise me would be taking Mananae from Indiana State.

George Brett said yesterday that "Home runs can kill rallies". That's one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Why don't the Royals just get it over with and fire their lunatic of a manager.

I'll call it now. I don't think Francisco gets past the Cubs.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ May 30, 2013 -> 10:09 PM) Hooray for Phil Rogers. I see he has a story on the Trib web site in which he at least raises the possibility that Dunn take his cheerful attitude and go home because he is absurdly terrible. He doesn't think it will happen, but he at least raises the idea. Only wish other folks in the Chicago media would dial up the pressure on the White Sox to cut loose the XXXXL-albatross. Phil Rogers also suggests releasing Dunn and trading for Ethier at a reduced rate to replace him. That is absurd. Ethier is locked in until 2017 at $85 million and is strictly a platoon player as well at this point. Phil Rogers being the lead baseball writer for the biggest newspaper in the country's 3rd largest market has been and is a complete joke.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 30, 2013 -> 05:10 PM) The SI.com mock has the Sox taking Ciuffo, a high school catcher. Unless the Sox were bluffing, there's no chance of this. Why is there no chance of this? Just curious as to your reasons. If they feel like he's the best guy they could take him.
-
Conor Gillaspie is fine. He is a platoon guy though. He should never play vs. LHP. Luckily, he won't have to for much longer. Beckham goes back to 2B and the Sox can play Keppinger at 3rd vs LHP and Gillaspie at 3B vs RHP. That probably gets you at least an .750 ops from your 3B platoon the rest of the year.

The next month, and possible "false positives"
Y2Jimmy0 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
My only problem with the Hudson and Santos deals were that they did not get enough. It just was not a good enough return. Hudson could have been packaged in that following offseason with something else and the Sox could have gotten an impact player. I understand why they did it. It still doesn't make it the right thing to do. -
Rebuild: So Far Better Than Could Have Hoped For
Y2Jimmy0 replied to Marty34's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 27, 2013 -> 11:02 AM) Selling high on Peavy is a must, imo. I understand why you think that and if they got a couple of studs for him under team control for the next 6 years I would not be upset. Just don't think it's in the cards. -
Rebuild: So Far Better Than Could Have Hoped For
Y2Jimmy0 replied to Marty34's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I understand the point of the pro rebuilding people. I am usually one of them. Many of the posters on this board have convinced me however that this type of scenario will not work with the White Sox. They have great pitching. Sale/Quintana/Santiago is a great trio of LH starters. Peavy is cheap #2 starter in the AL. Danks is under contract and Erik Johnson is on his way. They have the pitching to compete. They need to add offense most likely to really be realistic about competing. Trading Rios and Peavy does this but it is so counterproductive at this point. Like others have mentioned I think they have enough to deal for a bat and sign 2 hitters next offseason. If they signed Granderson and Morales and then traded for another hitter you are in the mix with the pitching that you currently have. It's all about pitching. Most teams rebuild because they don't have pitching. The Sox pitching is plenty good enough to win. They just need to add bats and they will have some $$ to spend in the offseason. -
QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 25, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) White Sox sent INF Angel Sanchez outright to Triple-A Charlotte. A Rule 5 pick, Sanchez cleared waivers and was rejected when offered back to the Angels. He no longer has to be stashed on the 25-man roster and will continue to provide depth in the minors. Per Rotoworld This move also clears a spot on the 40 man roster.

I know that Axelrod has done the job in the rotation. However, Santiago is the better pitcher and a better option long term. I hate Santiago in the bullpen. Not because he isn't good but because he is much more valuable as a starter. I just don't understand why they don't want the better pitcher starting. You have all said it's because they need him in the bullpen. I hate that reason. He's a starter. So start him. Have someone else take the bullpen role. I hate when this organization does this. If Santiago becomes a #3 starter it's much much more valuable than him being a lights out setup man. Obviously, Santiago is not Chris Sale, but we all had these same discussions when they prematurely put Sale in the bullpen last year.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 23, 2013 -> 03:40 PM) Jonathan Gray with a 3 hit, 12K shutout vs Baylor today. He really should be the #1 pick. Maybe so. And if that happens the Cubs would still be ecstatic with Appel.
