QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) Bob Nightengale @BNightengale Teams interested in Jeremy Affeldt were told at GM meetings that he was off board and #SFGiants were signing him to 3-year,$18 million deal Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS #cubs sign scott baker, team announces. 1 year deal Baker is that type of buy low move that the Cubs will be making. They will load up on these types of signings and hope for success. Another busy trade deadline for Theo-Jed. -
Rumor: Sox are very interested in Angel Pagan
Y2Jimmy0 replied to SOXOBAMA's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) Main reason I don't buy it: OF is not a position of weakness. Viciedo-De Aza-Rios was a great OF for us last year. Furthermore, still have Dunn as the DH and Konerko at 1b, so not like Dayan would move to DH. Also, De Aza posted nearly identical numbers to Pagan and is three years YOUNGER and costs probably at least 1/10 what Pagan will be making next year. Is Pagan better defensively though? I wouldn't say that I don't buy it, just that it is unlikely. He will probably make more money elsewhere. It has also been reported that Sox contacted Torii Hunter. They may just be doing their due diligence. Maybe getting a 3B really will cost De Aza or Viciedo. -
QUOTE (southside_hitman @ Nov 12, 2012 -> 05:32 AM) Chase Headley solves the third base dilemma and provides the Left Hand power that could be lost when Dunn gets moved. I would offer to trade Peavey back to SD and package Thornton and Beckham with him. On another front I would try to trade Dunn to some National league ball club with the goal of dumping most of his salary. Thorton must be traded on principle alone. Too many blown saves and his refusal to adjust his pitching style, And one shocker I would offer up for trade - Addison Reed. I think Nate Jones has better stuff and Reed may bring the trade value that other pitchers we have won't. I agree that Thornton should be traded. I also would not be opposed to trading Reed in the right package. What i don't understand is why you think dumping Dunn, Peavy, Thornton, and Beckham and getting back Headley equates to a better baseball team. Kind of puzzling to me. Dunn isn't getting moved. God I suspect I will be seeing blanket statements such as "dump Dunn on someone for salary relief blahhhhhhhh" all offseason and next year as well. Joy

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 12, 2012 -> 09:27 AM) Story and breakdowns at link http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prosp...13/2614305.html Not great but some intrigue at least. Shouldn't be ranked 30th in all of baseball this year.

Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Sources: Hunter prefers to play every day. Ten teams have contacted him, including #Dodgers, #Tigers, #WhiteSox, #Rangers, #Mariners. Anyone still interested in Torii Hunter in a Sox uni? -
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 10, 2012 -> 11:49 AM) Ya that trade looks incredibly unrealistic. All the Padres get are Gavin Floyd and the Astros #12 prospect?? Not happening. I can see the 3 way deal Hahn was talking about being for Headley though just not that deal. Yeah the Padres don't get anywhere near enough in this deal. I have been one of Viciedo's biggest supporters on this board but if you can use him to get Headley, I would do it in a second. I just think they can get another OF. We have all mentioned that there are just not many guys like Chase Headley floating around out there.

Heyman and Rosenthal both have mentioned the last couple days that the White Sox are trying to sign Youkilis. Dodgers and Phillies also mentioned. With the Red Sox signing of David Ross, I would love to see the Sox go after Saltamacchia. He is reportedly available. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 9, 2012 -> 11:32 AM) I'm not really guessing here either. I would be SHOCKED to see those two seriously on the block, it would be a super duper secret against all of the other discussions. Now I DO think we are after another OF'er, however thats because they are floating the idea of playing Dayan at 3B again. Do you think it's a decent name in a trade or an Ichiro type on the FA market?

Also, what does everyone think of rumor that Arizona is thinking of dealing Trevor Bauer? I know the main concerns are C and 3B but if they could get Bauer at a decent price, it's something I'd look into. He is really weird and has strange training methods but I think he's a future ace. I might be crazy though. -

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Nov 9, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) Yeah, the idea of us getting Moustakas is hilarious, Headley only slightly less so. As far as complete speculation goes, I like the idea of us moving Floyd and cash (and maybe some other prospect) to San Diego to get Gyorko. San Diego's moves indicate that they are moving toward contention (extending Street and Quentin, not moving Headley), and Gavin owuld KILL in Petco when lefties can't homer off of him. Gyorko is substantially worse than Headley, but would make a ton fo sense for the Sox. Anyway, I don't know if I'm valuing Floyd too highly, but that scenario, to me, at least seems somewhat plausible. You aren't valuing Floyd too highly but it's probably the wrong team. San Diego will probably play Gyorko at 2B if they keep Headley. Also, I don't think SD would want 1 year of Floyd at $9.5 million. Granted, that is a bargain, I think they want cost controllable arms with years of arbitration still coming. -
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Nov 9, 2012 -> 08:17 AM) Dump Dunn's deal if you can, free up cash Sign Victorino to replace DeAza with Floyd's salary Use Floyd & DeAza in deals for other pieces Sign Hafner & set up a platoon DH with Hafner vs. RHP & rotate PK/Viciedo/Rios/FA OF vs. LHP, to give the starters a rest while keeping their bats in the lineup If they dump Dunn's deal, then they might as well trade Rios, PK and anyone else that has value. Trading Dunn doesn't make you better. It leaves the team void of LH run producers. Yes I know that you suggested Hafner. If they trade Dunn they should completely rebuild. It's all a moot point though because unlike many posters on this board, I am pretty sure the White Sox front office wants to keep Dunn.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 9, 2012 -> 07:43 AM) Who is this miracle 3B you speak of? I agree on this. We have heard the exorbitant cost for Headley. Moustakas is a pipe dream. If Youkilis is willing to come back, that's the move I'd make. With Dunn and PK on this roster still, the Sox have to make an effort to compete. This would also give them some more time to find the long term answer at 3B. -

QUOTE (balfanman @ Nov 8, 2012 -> 07:42 AM) How long has it been since Young has played 3rd base? Would a trade for Young / or Beltre happen for say Rios and various parts? They are losing Hamilton right? So many questions but inquiring minds want to know. It has also been reported that Texas is chasing Adam LaRoche. That means Mike Olt is probably available. They don't have a spot for him to play.

QUOTE (ROC Sox Fan @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 08:36 PM) Yea I mean, alcohol and crack cocaine abuse is bad. But are there studies out there that show they directly lead to a more injury prone athlete? I get the assumptions. That s*** ain't healthy, but what data is there to back it up? It's not always an injury though with him. Sometimes, he does something that he shouldn't be doing and goes in a 2 week funk. I just don't trust his mental state. He's very fragile. Every road trip, there is a chance that he'd wonder off and find himself somewhere he shouldn't be. It has happened before. He's a hell of a talent. So much risk though. -
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 11:35 AM) Please stop. This is not absolute fact but merely opinion that cannot be universally applied to all batters in all slots. If your eyes told you that Adam Dunn helped the team more than he hurt it this year then that's your opinion. My opinion is that he, along with a few other hitters, killed us. He hurt us the most because he placed an unfeared, auto-out in between our stack of good hitters. Just because he hit 41 pitches hard this year does not discount the other 1500 that fooled him. Stats aside I'd rate the offense like this: DeAza- tough out Youk- tough out Dunn- easy out PK- tough out Rios- tough out AJ- tough out Tank- easy out Alexei- easy out Jimmy- easy out IMO Dunn was the biggest problem. But he clearly wasn't the biggest problem. If he were an easy out he would not walk as much as he does. He committed fewer outs than more than half the team. If this is your opinion, then I really don't have any use for your opinion. Its just flat out wrong.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 02:39 AM) I'm sure he understands it quite clearly. The fact of the matter is, GMs not only see money in the production a player puts on the field (which is all FGs WAR does), but they also see money in marketing plus money in a potential playoff appearance. If spending $25 million on one player for one year makes an owner $45 million because of additional attendance plus an extended playoff run, how does that play in, even if he is "only" worth $21 million per FanGraphs WAR? This is not as black and white as you make it seem. I understand and agree with you guys on this. There is an inherent risk with signing Hamilton though. All of the substance abuse problems would sway me the other way. I just never thought the man was ready to take on the lifestyle of a MLB player. Any owner that signs Hamilton has to know that there's a chance of relapse and the contract being a complete waste. -

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 01:48 PM) Benet played a great second half. Now, can Benet beat Downers North? They can beat DGN. North wasn't that good in the regular season. They have real good Sophomore QB David Edwards. Benet is the better football team. Sometimes that doesn't matter though. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 09:59 AM) In search of the next Quintana or Veal? http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospe...ee-agents-2012/ I know I am Captain Obvious with this but those were two very sweet signings. I liked the Veal one at the time but didn't know much about Quintana.

Today is the start of the GM Meeting. While they aren't as active as the winter meetings, things still get done there. I believe that Santos deal last year and the Garcia for Floyd/Gio was also done at the GM Meetings. -

QUOTE (danman31 @ Nov 3, 2012 -> 11:25 AM) I saw Aaron Bailey play last night. It was his first game back since spraining his knee midseason. He can run, but he wasn't impressive through the air. I don't know how much of that was rust though. They don't really let him throw very often. With what Illinois has I would bet that he plays a lot as a Frosh net year. However, if he has aspirations to make a career out of football it will be at a different position. He had plenty of offers to attend better football schools but they would not commit to him playing QB. He is a brick s***house though. If you went to the game not knowing who he was you would assume he was their MLB. Real good kid too. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 01:38 PM) I think the Sox would be doing handstands in joy if somebody would take Dunn and his contract off the Sox hands. Do you all at least agree on that? I always thought Bulls fans were generally the dumbest in Chicago. Comments like this make me think otherwise. Enjoy Dan Johnson starting DH.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 03:10 AM) Asking price for Headley is atronomical. Talks would begin and end with Sale. If that's the case then I would bet that Headley stays with SD. They would have to accept less than that from someone, especially with teams knowing that they want to play Gyorko at 3B at some point.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 10:14 AM) Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS #cubs and #redsox among teams in on Dan Haren trade talks. north siders a new entry. If the Cubs got Haren they would bank on him being good and receiving a prospect or two at the deadline for him. Probably not a bad move for a team that has $$ to spend on a rebuilding effort. -
Sox organizational meetings this weekend

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 10:38 AM) Be interesting to see if we the fans get any info after the meetings concerning team priorities I'd rather not have any of the information and have them do their jobs well. It will be curious to see if info is generally as secretive with Hahn in charge. Obviously, the Youkilis move was talked about forever but Liriano and Myers fit the old MO. All of a sudden there were tweets and those players were on the White Sox. I wonder if that will change at all.
