This is true. It’s almost they decided they wanted McLain, Saucke and Antonacci and did what was necessary to land them all. In the end, it’s 10 players off of the BA 500 plus guys like Shepardson and Fox who could move quickly in relief roles. Lots of teams punted picks this year because there weren’t 10 rounds of players worth slot values. You can still get value out of those picks though. Jordan Appel can help minor league pitchers get better and Phil Fox could move through minors quickly etc. Tim Elko was a “punted pick”. Those guys in 6-10 were basically their picks in 16-20. That’s how you have to look at it.

Skenes is absolutely the exception though. In this draft alone there are multiple instances: Andrew Dutkanych, Gage Jump and Thatcher Hurd all turned down millions out of HS. So did Arkansas 2B Peyton Stovall. If someone is offering you millions to play baseball, take it in the vast majority of cases.
-
These guys get old and ultimately have to take like $10K in the draft though. MLB isn’t going to wait.
-
I think increasing $$ allotted for day 3 could help. Most of these kids turning down money are making short-sighted decisions. It’s generally better to start a pro career and get to that potential 1st contract sooner.

Burns and Condon have same agent. He broke the record with both guys. I was told on Sunday that Oakland had a predraft deal with Kurtz and that Bazzana was falling to 5 if he didn’t go 1. That’s why he took a haircut at 1. KC and STL were also bidding on Smith so I’m very curious to see the actual bonus there.

Dodgers interested in Robert, Crochet, Pham

Something like Basallo, Norby, Beavers and a tiny sweetener for Crochet and a reliever makes sense for both teams imo. -
It’s just all of your picks added up. First pick in rounds 2-10 and then also 10th overall. Should be $12 million or so.
-
Okay well 3-5 are legit guys and so is the outfielder from the 12th. They added nine position players.

2024 Official Draft Thread - Day 3 1pm start

I think the first three probably will be. -
What was the strategy that they should have employed instead? I’m very curious. They’ll have the first pick in rounds 2-20.

The issue with this is that you lose the pick and the bonus pool space anyway. In theory, if Bonemer was supposed to get $3 million and didn’t sign, the Sox would lose the ability to spend the slot of $2.2 million at 43. They could only use whatever the overslot portion was. -

The first 6 picks are all prospects as well as the first three on day three. -

It's not a 5 man class. That's ridiculous. -

If you don't want to ever punt picks, you're taking 20 college players every draft. That's just the way it works. If you want early round high school talent, the money has to come from somewhere. Shirley isn't unprepared. He's actually pretty good at this. Their 2022 draft might be one of the best in the sport. Yeah the class seems fine now. Day three is a nice rebound. You have to think of rounds 6-10 as basically 16-20 in actuality. That's how this works sometimes. Grab some really cheap guys to ensure that you can utilize the entire bonus pool. This isn't a draft class where it made sense to pay slot values in every round. There aren't enough good players. -

It's 6 players in an 11 player class so far. This draft is really bad. Players legitimately not worth playing the slot game through round 10. The White Sox believe that Mclain, Saucke and Antonacci are real pieces for them. -

They should have some money today but it sounds like night one was expensive. I’m still not sure where the overage went or is going though. I’m interested in Zach Stewart and Cade Obermueller today. No idea if either is an option. These picks today will all rank higher than 6-10 though. I like going prep in 2nd. What did you prefer? I like that plan in a shitty draft. -
Caleb Bonemer ranked #36 in the class at BA. I’m guessing the White Sox feel similarly or higher
-
They haven’t been cheap in the draft in a long time
-
I mean I suppose. More likely to be a college RSO though I’d think
-
Agreed but I’m not sure what the $$ is being spent on
-
The class isn’t good enough to pay slot all the way through. I’d much rather take Caleb Bonemar than give slot to bad players who don’t deserve it in 7-10. It’s a bad draft class
-
Sox have spent to the pool every year fora while. Having $19 million to spend on players is helpful.
-
It's a really bad draft class but I'm very underwhelmed.
-
No. Everything over $150K counts against the pool. So like last year, they paid Mathias Lacombe $450K. $300K counts against pool. If they made that selection in rounds 1-10, it would cost $450K against the pool.
-
I'm guessing that both 2nd rounders are overslot. Prep players are expensive.
