Story on Sox trade possibilities...
Chicago White Sox replied to Lip Man 1's topic in Trade Winds 2024
I just don’t see how any contender trades for Sheets between now and the deadline given his lack of track record and 1B/DH only status (unless you are the White Sox). And if the best we can get for him is a lottery ticket, then I’d rather just hold until the offseason. With Eloy certainly gone and Vaughn a serious non-tender candidate IMO, it doesn’t hurt to have someone who can slot into one of those spots if better options don’t present themselves. And while he’s not exactly young, he is controllable for three more seasons and could be flipped later if he proves to be an above average DH against RHP. To me, the must moves remain Fedde, Kopech, & Pham. Obviously there are other guys who will or could be moved, but I don’t expect much of a return for them. The one exception being Steven Wilson, but not sure Getz will pull the trigger there given the level of control. As such, Getz really needs to hit big on those first three guys I mentioned. My hope is he packages Fedde plus Kopech or Pham for a legitimate OF prospect who can challenge for a starting role as soon as next year. And he can’t miss like he did on Dominic Fletcher and Zach DeLoach…Getz needs to hit a HR with those guys like Rick Hahn & Haber’s laptop did last deadline. -
Maybe Montgomery isn't going to make it.

Not worried about Colson just yet. He never really failed up to this point, so it’s good for him to learn to make legitimate adjustments to his game. Does anyone have a link to the AAA Statcast data? I’d be curious if his elevated K level is driven by chasing or from being too selective against AAAA pitchers who can actually get their junk over the plate. -
I believe he’s regained most of his velocity

The problem is Eloy is never healthy and he’s only going to have a very short window when he comes back from his latest setback to prove that he is. I think some club will give him a shot in the offseason as a DH, but I doubt it will be someone with serious ambitions of winning. He simply hasn’t flashed enough these past two years (102 wRC+ in 635 PA’s) to make a large gamble on. -

Eloy is a bad baseball player who can’t stay healthy. No contender is going to trade for him in hopes of improving his chances. -
Glad they are doing this instead of going six man, one day a week for everyone.

Kopech isn’t performing bad and is 4th is Stuff+ amongst relievers. He will be in demand at the trade deadline. -

Chance of scenery type trade? -
The one thing I will give Getz credit for is bringing in Bannister. No idea how they convinced him to join this s%*# show of an org, but he seems to be making a difference where he can. I just have zero faith Getz has any idea how to build a competent group of position players. And when his key advisers are Gene fucking Watson and a dude who pushed to acquire Dominic Fletcher I become even less inspired to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Because Hahn was clueless in how to evaluate a manager and got all excited when Grifol used some buzz words.

I hate being that guy, but if you can’t build a team full of replacement level players then you dont deserve to be a major league GM. Yes, Robert and Moncada are hurt and yes Benintendi is a nightmare that Getz assumed, but so many of the negative fWAR guys are of his own doing. Maldonado has no business a major leaguer at this point. Vaughn should have been sent down a while ago. His big acquisition in Fletcher has been terrible and the depth pieces he acquired in Lopez & Shoemake are simply bad to little surprise. A person with any level of pride would quit out of embarrassment, but not Chris Getz, he’ll ride this wave of unwarranted good fortune to Jerry’s grave.

Two separate players => Robert + Benintendi
-
You just listed Robert, one of the worst OFs in baseball, an interesting backup catcher, and 11 unproven prospects. There is a very real chance it takes five years to be a legitimate contender again. The major league roster is almost completely devoid of talent. I think 2027 should be the realistic goal of when we are competing for an AL Central title. I think it would take a miracle to be competitive before the 2027 season and not a ton has to go wrong for it to take a few years longer.

I think the question is why waste playing time on garbage like Keller in the first place? At some point we have to start committing innings to our young starters. The one strength this system has is SP prospects in the upper minors. We’re going to have like seven prospects competing for like three or four rotation spots next year in Nastrini, Cannon, Thorpe, Iriarte, Eder, Bush, & Adams. Why not start giving them some of these starts so evaluations can begin? There is going to be a learning curve at the major league level and adaption will take time. Let’s see what Nastrini has to offer at minimum so we can get a pretty good sense if he has be a long-term rotation stalwart or more of a bullpen guy. No need to cram that initial evaluation into a two month post deadline period because we’re hoping to snag a minor league relief prospect for crap like Keller.

Let’s hope Getz does the smart thing and uses this spot towards developing an potential future piece rather than hoping we hit the lottery on some retread.

Isn’t Montes a DH-only type prospect? -
We got a pitching prospect for Grossman that is more or less the same as Horn. You don’t need to “trust my evaluations” to realize Getz has executed a ton of roster churn to ultimately effectively gain nothing so far. It’s wild to me how much the pro Getz crowd is celebrating getting a relief prospect for Grossman like it’s some game changer for us. We legit have the least talented major leaguer roster in baseball and Getz is prioritizing getting a few more C tier prospects vs. using our available playing time on guys who could potentially fill everyday roles. What’s weird is that you were previously all about giving Colas a shot but now are hoping to flip some dumpster dives for garbage. I can’t wait until we ultimately cut Colas & Sosa this offseason without giving them an extended shot.

Bush has been killing it. And so has Adams for that matter.
-
What good is a C tier minor league when you have little long term talent on the major league roster? Is that really going to move the needle? At some point you need to start giving your youngsters extended opportunities. And I supported the Fedde & Pham signings. There is flip upside there. What I don’t like is not giving guys like Colas, Sosa, & Fletcher extended shots and instead playing the likes of Grossman, Ortega, Lopez, Mendick, etc. Cool, we got a minor league reliever for Grossman! We literally just DFAed one that I’d consider a similar caliber talent in Horn. Same applies for giving a rotation spot to Keller over Nastrini. Hitting on one youngster we weren’t relying on would likely exceed anything we get in return for these minimally talented veterans.

I don’t know much about Young or Emerson, but does either have legit stat potential? Have to get a legit 60 FV headliner if you move Robert. -
That’s part of my frustration with Getz. Go look at the old rebuilding Sox in the early years and you at least had some pieces that were going to part of the future. There are just so many bad vets that won’t command anything in trade on this roster that I don’t get the plan. And the few youngsters we’ve had have mostly be cast to Charlotte unless they performed well right away. It definitely feels like Getz had some plan but panicked a bit after the horrific start.
