Garfein: Sox could trade Beckham for pitching
Jerksticks replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 11, 2014 -> 02:21 PM) during that time, KW was not in full rebuild mode. I don't think he is now either. We are pretty good; teams can't just beat our ass anymore like last year. I like KW's retooling so far but it just so happens we ARE in contention. And since chances to win are so precious as they say, I don't see GB being traded. He's looking like the perfect bridge between Eaton and #3. I love our 1-4 -
I don't really miss watching Rios. /thread

I thought I saw two vaginas on a woman once. I turned out to be pretty wrong but who knows

Garfein: Sox could trade Beckham for pitching

I don't see it under this regime. This isn't apples and apples, but we could have traded PHumber at max value. Since we were contending it wasn't an option. Since we are contending this year in a s*** league, I doubt this same regime would trade one of our more productive players mid season. The only reason we MIGHT, IMO, is because the stables are full of MI that need to play. But almost every team has a pretty good shot at the playoffs. Has KW ever made a trade like that when we are competing? -
I hope we retire Porcello tonight. Clean the clocks

One of the worst Sox losses I've ever witnessed
Jerksticks replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Who are these 95% of managers that are for sure pulling Chris Sale with a low pitch count after a few chop hits? It's Chris Sale. Imagine if robin had pulled him before trout and the bullpen guy gave up the same home run. The same people would crucify robin for not leaving sale in the game, citing low pitch counts and chop hits n shoddy defense..."Dude you gotta leave your ace in there. Robin needs to be fired." -

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 8, 2014 -> 02:28 PM) At what? Well he personally installed the hindsight machine on the fundamentals deck. All ya gotta do is walk up to the machine, tell it you're butthurt from grown men losing a game, and then it spits out a more desirable outcome. The bigger the ego the harder it works. But don't ever go up there after a good decision because it'll race you home and crawl into bed with your wife. -

Id like the sox to give Robin an even longer extension. Does a pretty good job. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 22, 2014 -> 10:25 PM) How many one-two-three saves have the White Sox had all season? ONE? For those who keep saying that pitching in the 5th-8th in a high leverage situation (Petricka, Putnam, Webb) is more important than protecting a 3 run lead in the 9th, it sure hasn't proven to be so easy for one of the best middle relievers in the AL the last month and a half. Agree. I don't really understand the argument that the 9th is the same as earlier high-leverage situations. It's the end of the game so clearly it takes more stones. And if people actually want to argue that men don't have varying levels of stones, then you are either lying or you've literally never met other males in your life. Please explain yourselves if you take that opinion.

I really liked the look of the lineup when they put it up.

QUOTE (raBBit @ May 20, 2014 -> 10:30 AM) Without looking at anything other than the information available for him, he's a risky signing for sure. No stats and no video other than an edited video from his camp. I understand that Puig was a similar type signing but that just makes it perfect timing for Carbonell to exploit that. Whoever said "Alexei but yoked" was right on. Obviously we're far away, but going into next season with Eaton, Garcia, Viciedo and Carbonell sounds good to me. We have a great fourth option if Eaton/Garcia get injured or if Garcia sucks coming back (fathomable). Plus, we can be patient with Carbonell if need be. I am not sold on Viciedo at DH yet. We can't have him pegged as the DH and have him regress to .265/.300/.420; That is not going to cut it at DH. If Carbonell is the real deal, we can shift Eaton to LF and it would be a huge boost to the defense. Of course, this is all dependent on Carbonell actually being MLB caliber player which I am not inclined to believe yet. We need more than an unnamed scout calling him a "beast" and a video from his camp. I trust Hahn to be doing his homework instead of just trying to make this the Cuban National team. Haha dude I think they do their homework when millions of dollars are involved.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 20, 2014 -> 09:58 AM) This may be a good thing. Usually it takes multiple blown saves to remove a closer. Now we have an excuse without blowing all those. Amen. Can't throw strike one to the leadoff hitter. Also can't retire the leadoff hitter. What is there to discuss with this guy lol

Kolek could probably close games for us down the stretch
-
Danny Richar is way better anyway.
-
I was just thinking this could put pressure on a team that may have been in trade talks with the sox.
-
Could this be a precursor to a big trade? Is there any advantage to DFAing a s***ty player like this, letting him get claimed, and THEN completing a discussed trade with the claim team, instead of just straight up trading with said team? Like somebody mentioned, no team is gonna claim this guy in the real world. But in conniving Front Office world, is there any reason to plan a DFA-claim-trade instead of throwing him in like Teahen. Just seems like the risk of the trade team backing out would be too great to approach it this way.

Is This an Unprecedented Offensive Turnaround?

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ May 11, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) Hitting is always about knowing your strengths and your weaknesses as well as the pitchers . You get behind in the count and the pitcher knows you chase high heat or sweeping breaking pitches down and away you should realize those pitches are coming and teach yourself to lay off them. These are the constant battles and adjustment hitters must make . You know statistically you become a better hitter when ahead in the count so a lot of hitters take the 1st pitch. Other hitters swing at the 1st pitch thinking a pitcher also wants to get ahead because its to his advantage then and they're more likely to throw a meatball on that 1st pitch. It's the game within the game. With men on base you're pitched one way . With bases empty you're pitched another way. A hitter has to constantly monitor the situation and know the likely strategies of how he will be pitched in all situations. Hitters have to be educated on the game, certain things drilled into them. They have to anticpate like Flowers yesterday running to 3rd on a GB to his right when he was on 2nd base. Clearly he didnt tell himself stay put on a GB to my right unless it goes through the hole . You're not going to score on a single to left anyway if its between SS and 3rd base. Just as there are mental errors running the bases. Imagine the miscalculations that go into every at bat. The pitcher has to think like a hitter , the hitter think like a pitcher. Where's the ball going ? What's the location? Is he going to throw me a strike or try to make me get myself out ? Fastball ? Curve , Changeup ? He has to remember tendencies by many different pitchers . The best plan starts with knowing your strengths and weaknesses and the simple fact you become a better hitter ahead in the count thereby forcing the pitcher to come to you and if he doesnt you take your walk. Awesome post man, and this doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of "the game within the game". Stats will always be useless for the majority of player evaluation by FOs -
QUOTE (flavum @ May 9, 2014 -> 06:13 PM) That would be my concern too. Is he just a thrower that knows how to over-power high school kids, or does he have more than that? It would be unfortunate to take a high school pitcher at 3, and then he's a relief pitcher in Birmingham four years later. But the Sox have a great track record with pitching, so if they take him, I'd hope for the best. It just sucks there isn't a bat that they HAD to take. Just not this draft, unfortunately. He probably is just a thrower at this point, which is all he should be at 18 with his talent. I would argue all the other high school pitchers are breaking their arms throwing curves n sliders because they don't have the God-given size and ability that Kolek has. There is a reason he's being talked about as the top pick- he's special and nearly as positively projectable as it gets.

QUOTE (Dunt @ May 8, 2014 -> 03:48 PM) You are simply not a Sox fan if you dont enjoy Hawk. Word. Through MLB.tv on my tv, I finally got some friends to realize just how lucky sox fans are to hear two announcers talking about the game and it's lesser thought of nuances. Just watch any other broadcast and you won't believe the difference. Pretty much every other pair of announcers simply comment on the actual game taking place, not the intricate mental and physical processes that the viewer is witnessing. After a decade of arguing for Hawk, I'm starting to think either you get it or you don't, and it's cool either way with me.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 5, 2014 -> 12:16 PM) An OF of Dunn in LF, De Aza in CF and Tank in RF would have to contend for worst defensive major league OF of all-time. Haha well said. Dunn should just sit and PH.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 5, 2014 -> 12:11 PM) No, I would take Mike Trout 10 times out of 10. Carlos Gomez is better than a lot of people realize now a days - he's fantastic defensively, steals bases, hits for average, and hits for power - but Mike Trout is a better player. Frankly, I don't think it'd be a stretch to say that Gomez is one of the 10 best positional players in the game, though I'd gladly listen to arguments. He still doesn't beat Trout. Yea he's silently badass. So if you'd clearly take mike trout over Gomez then I ask what has WAR really told you?
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 5, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) I think it does that job just fine. It suggests that Mike Trout is the best player in the game. I think that's pretty undeniable. It also says that, even with the limitations of him playing 1B, Miguel Cabrera is the 2nd best player and the best hitter. It states that (when he's healthy, obviously) that Clayton Kershaw is the best pitcher in the league. I understand if people don't want to use it as an end all, be all, but I think it does a great job distinguishing players' values. Carlos Gomez is valuable but few would argue he's one of the best players in the game. I guess whether you take him or trout is a coin flip?
-
I think it's pointless as a tool to rank superstars or even good players, and should never be used as an end-all for determining value. We already know good players are good, because they produce. You can't say player A is "better" than every other player with a lower WAR because players have different jobs. I think it's an excellent tool for finding value in non-superstar players when constructing a team but I doubt front offices give one hoot about WAR.
-
QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 06:28 PM) I'm saying someone who's primarily a hitter should have a weighted batting WAR, the Gordon Beckhams of the world should have a weighted fielding WAR, the Adam Eatons a weighted baserunning WAR. Yes! You are on to something. It's time to make WAR smart...instead of the big pot of chili it is. If WAR became smart more people would frickin love it.
