QUOTE (Dizzy Sox @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 09:12 PM) Skaggs yes, owing s...not so much. Though he is raking at an age-appropriate level his bb/k rate is downright Hawkinsish. We have enough guys who don't know the strike zone. My point too. Minor league pitchers strike him out like crazy. Lets not target any more of these guys. Tyler Skaggs gives up a hit per inning in the minors and walks plenty of guys. Basically he's not that tough to pick up. Major leaguers have crushed him it looks like. Erik Johnson looks way more polished to me and he's not in any top 15 or whatever. What makes Skaggs such am elite prospect if his stats don't back it up? Basically I'm a huge fan of WHIP when evaluating milb pitchers. Are guys picking him up or not.

I don't like Skaggs or Owings. I hope Hahn targets guys that are dominating their leagues instead.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 30, 2013 -> 01:29 PM) He's slowly becoming Robert De Niro in "The Fan". Lol "ehhhh Bobbay". Man I'd love to watch that again. Oh yea, you can't rent movies anymore.

QUOTE (Paulstar @ Jun 29, 2013 -> 08:50 PM) One name that I saw on the free agent list that intrigued the hell out of me was Michael Young. He's always been noted for his veteran leadership, and I always felt like he would be the perfect mentor for Beckham. I remember hearing how Mark DeRosa working with Young in Texas really saved his career from failed prospect with the Braves to becoming an all around sound ballplayer for many years. Gordon Beckham has enough talent to be a Michael Young type hitter, he just needs to learn how to approach hitting like Michael Young. Yes! The old dead horse is back in season ladies n gentleman! Locked in the darkest corner of the Soxtalk stables, once a year James Baldwin drags the corpse out for all to pick at. Jun 29th is a little early but you can pick through the flies and buzzards for some bone marrow no doubt. I almost like the smell now. But actually, I believe this to be the soundest reason in the last 5 years for acquiring him. -
It's a tough year for all of us. The minor leagues are the most exciting they've ever been for us. Period. Closest I can remember is the 2009 Barons first half. I'll be in here sometimes hashing it up with you caul field.

Gordon Beckham: Player of the Decade and future HOFer

I miss "See ball, hit ball" Gordon. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 27, 2013 -> 08:03 PM) Trayce Thompson creeping up to the magical (for him) .270 mark, almost 50 RBI's. Progress. That seems like a lot of rbis. Is it? Anybody on the Sox have 50 yet?

I believe there are two Ns in Vicienndo. It's Italian I believe.

Personally, Addison makes me super nervous every single time. Like, why do you let guys get on base man? Close the f***in door. So to sell high on him would be a dream come true for me, but at a premium, since he's young and relatively proven himself. But I understand why some people want to keep him too. I trust in KW.

QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) Chicago White Sox @whitesox 1m Prior to tonight’s game, the Sox placed Conor Gillaspie on the Paternity Leave List & recalled 3rd baseman Brent Morel from @KnightsBaseball Now that's just f***in juicy boys!

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2013 -> 01:22 PM) Reed has 1.2 fWAR this season, Papelbon has 0.2. Papelbon is paid $13 million a year this year and for the next 2 years, Reed is paid $600k. Therefore, Papelbon is -1 wins better than Reed this year and $12.4 million a year more expensive. Excellent example IMO. I think we should compile the list of for sure sellers and their possible closers for fun. I think the following teams will be sellers in a few weeks: AL East: None. AL Central: All 4. AL West: Mariners, Astros, probably Angels NL East: Marlins, Mets. Phillies are in it so I say no NL Central: Brewers, cubs. NL West: None So I see 10-12 teams that would sell relief players. Maybe we could each take a team and analyze their bullpens and actually see where Crain and Reed rank. Lets take a quick look at the cubs. Off the top of my head, now that they DFA'd CM, Kevin Gregg and James Russell are probably the nicest pieces. Whoopteedo! BREAKING NEWS: "Tigers fans construct statue of Owner ILitch in response to news of Kevin Gregg acquisition for playoff run."

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 07:58 PM) That has nothing to do with Addison Reed. Again, why do you think the Tigers team of professionals scouts and administrators are going to overrate Reed when we won't? ??? It has everything to do with Reed- he's a closer. I don't think anybody really thinks the Tigers want Reed or want to deal with us either though, but why are the Tigers immune from desperation and overrating? Why wouldn't Reed be on the short list of available, quality closers? Has anybody made the list yet? I'd say you can put Crain on it.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) Wait aren't you arguing vehemently in another thread about how trading for prospects sucks and they always bust? Guess what? We're not getting f***ing Castellanos for Reed. Obviously if someone wants to vastly overpay for him, let's do it -- but I'm arguing generally against filling our direct competitors' biggest holes with our cost-controlled talent with upside. That's why you have to ask for more. It's the tigers. No way you lose that trade. Caste llanos is worth far less than y'all realize. Ilitch wants to win this year not develop a prospect.
-
Totally. Which makes the crap we get for our system funnier. We never get credit for Sale. Not trying to say our system is the greatest but I'd bet the majority of systems would like to trade their graduates of the last few years for ours. (Sale, Reed, Jones, maybe Hudson). Everybody wants a Chris Sale.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 03:32 PM) I have no problem trading Reed to Detroit so long as Castellanos is coming over. You think the Tigers want to do that? Reed has a nice track record closing out games. Castellanos has a blank resume with no past experience. If I'm Hahn, I'm asking for more to insulate against a total bust.
-
You = Hahn. Do you heavily shop Reed, Yes or No?

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 24, 2013 -> 02:22 PM) All a closer is is a really good setup man who can get 3 outs in the 9th inning without falling apart. Relievers in general are volatile. When you have a Reed you keep him if you're contending, but if you are not, and you have just about nothing positionally at the AA/AAA level, and absolutely nothing as far as run producers, then you trade him. Because he's really not all that special. He has nice numbers, but he's not a once in a generation type of arm, not even close to it. Totally. If trading him is necessary to get us a good bat then by all means. Anything to keep us from signing any of these 30 yr old FAs. -
QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Jun 23, 2013 -> 06:23 PM) Buerhle, he was/is all heart, moxie, and smarts. His raw stuff has always been well below average yet he's been one of the most successful pitchers in the majors over the past 13 years Bulls***. While he is indeed all the things you say, the thing that made him great was his talent. He can locate any of his pitches wherever he wants. As Hawk says, "he can throw it through a tea cup." I'm not trying to jump on you, but he has really good STUFF.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 22, 2013 -> 06:07 PM) M'zewski with another walk, Tim Anderson HBP, Hawkins 0-3, 2K I like the shorthand. Something has to be done. Zoo?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 22, 2013 -> 04:34 PM) There is that...getting caught in the "day to day" psychology of the team beginning to lose confidence in leads late in games. It seemed so easy to just throw out that name Rondon in the off-season, but that experiment didn't last long at all. Really difficult for Leyland, just like Ozzie, to trust rookies or inexperienced players. I think Addison's done about as well as can be expected this year...but how much better could he possibly be? Unless he ever perfects that slider to where it's as good as Crain's off-speed stuff now, he's going to struggle behind in counts because his fastball and command with it just aren't quite sharp enough. Totally agree about Reed. So do you think we can sell highest on him and his iffy command now? I kinda but into that position.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 22, 2013 -> 04:18 PM) I wonder if "closer" isn't one of those positions you're better off trading mid-season rather than during the offseason. Right now, teams like Detroit are sitting there crapping their pants every time the 9th inning comes along. During the offseason teams will convince themselves they have it taken care of with some rookie or converted setup man, and then a few will wind up in panic mode. I agree here. Talk isn't as cheap with closers this time of year. Which teams are bleeding wins late right now? Boston, Detroit...im sure we'd all prefer an NL partner.
-
What are the odds he likes it here so much that we trade him for good prospects and resign him to a 1 yr deal and do it again

Rodriguez and Webb promoted to Charlotte

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 11:43 AM) Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if these two got a look after the inevitable trades of Crain/Lindstrom/Thornton. Webb sporting a nice WHIP. You're probably right.
