I like the idea of giving our threats (guys who can change the game on any swing) the most AB's. I think JP is so perfect for the 9 hole as he gets to set the table all but in the 1st. I'll never see it but I'd like to. Has a team ever batted all their mashers 1-2-3-4? What are the stats on such a thing?

QUOTE (since56 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 08:00 AM) Publicly insulting any umpire is never a good idea. They stick together. I don't think Joe West is some ring-leader of umpires or has any power to rally other umpires. If anything he would be an outcast, as I think it's unwritten umpire code that you should never be a story or a focal point of a game or bigger than a game. He seems to be in the news more than other umpires so I would think they would despise him for that. Kinda like Patrick Mannelly; only time he was interviewed was when he messed up. Rule #1 of Umpire Club: People should never talk about umpire club.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 10:30 PM) But what's the market for an all bat, no position player? That's my concern. That would immediately eliminate the NL. And the DH only days seem to be coming to an end (there's obviously some exceptions). He has no position HERE. Hell, we were talking Tank/Dunn platoon until we signed PK. I get your point but in no way is it fact. Chad Tracy was playing last year.

I hope Alexei is doing the Rocky 4 workout somewhere in Montana right now.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 04:43 PM) ? He wasn't really replaced until he got hurt. After he got hurt the team started winning, that's how he got replaced. Yea Balta, but I think it was EASIER to do because he was so blatantly unathletic in his limited time. There's nothing Cora, Guillen, Alexei or Vizquel could teach him to make him not look awkward most of the time. He even looks uncomfortable in his own clothes, like they don't fit right. Guess my point is the eye test made the decision easy not to play him.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 05:28 PM) Well has it been justifiable? Are they actually worth that much? I mean, you essentially acknowledged that other players have been graded highly, but is it fair? I don't know that it is. Escobar had an OK year offensively, hit the ball well over a short time frame in the AFL, and suddenly he's the 2nd best prospect in the White Sox system? I think Viciedo and Morel have much, much brighter futures in the majors than Escobar does. I don't think stats tell Escobar's story at all, not like they ever do for a minor leaguer, but still. He must have really passed some eye tests with flying colors at the AFL. X amount of hits in Y amount of AFL at-bats can't matter much to any GM. It's fun for us fans who don't see the games, but I'm sure it matters peanuts. Something else is up with this kid- trade his ass!

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 02:16 PM) If Teahen genuinely comes out and seriously outplays Morel, then he's earned a shot to start. If he comes out and spends the next week struggling, he'll move back to the bench fairly quickly. Does Morel make the team if Teahen wins 3B? I'd think the answer would be no so he can play everyday in AAA. What happens in your scenario then? Call-up after a week or two for Brent? A Vizquel fest? Is Tank on the Roster? Teahen winning the job and then imploding sounds like the worst thing ever.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) .282 with 25 HR is not bad for a 20-year-old between AAA and MLB in 110 games. Yea it's insanely good. Nice combination of the AAA and MLB- never saw that and it blows me away even more. I love when people act like this is all he can be. I'm 26 and I've learned so much in these past 6 years it's ridiculous. He's not even a man yet.

sox payroll hike in conjunction with cubs "rebuild"?
Jerksticks replied to cws0591's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Do you think their 300M spending spree a few years back was a reaction to our back to back 90 win campaigns? Or was it more of an investment idea for Zell: pumping money into the team to increase attendance, rebuild the excitement, increase the value of the team for the future sale. Either way, that man was a genius. He rode their hearts to hundreds of millions. -
2011 Twins talent vs. White Sox talent

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 05:32 PM) Much as I loathe Juan's Pierre's game, even I can give him his due for his excellent range. Though I will say I think playing in a smaller ballpark compared to Dodger stadium made him look a little better than he really is. Yea, he looked REALLY good out there last year. He's always busting his rump whether it's in the field or in the box or on the bases. But I, like any other GM, would gladly take a true corner outfielder over him, especially in our park. Is what it is and I'll root for him. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 03:06 PM) Wow, seriously, you're clueless about defense. You tell me that my statement was a joke when you go on and ramble on about how range doesn't mean anything for an outfielder? Plus, Pierre got benched for one season and that was his age 31 season, the year that is usually the last year of a player's prime. When Juan was in his prime, he was a good player for Florida. I'd say he's still somewhere around an average player right now near his mid-30s. Believe whatever you want about WAR, but you don't have to go and try to insult others for using it. Maybe you should, you know, look into it before you start making fun of it. It'll make you less ignorant. I didn't say range doesn't mean anything. The original point was that plus offense trumps range. We're playing CQ in right and his range is horrible. Like Balta said, ManRoid's offense was way more important to the Dodgers than Juan Pierre's range...no? That's all I'm saying. Then you put words in my mouth saying I like bad range but diving catches? Just because I said I'd take DYoung over JP? That's just a weird conclusion from my post. Who doesn't want an outfielder with plus range, ya know? I think dwar is cool man, but only for lack of anything else. owar isn't for me, as i'd rather look at the different stats and come to my own conclusion. No need to fight brother, i just don't get why you had to say I hate good range. That's like saying someone doesn't like guys who hit the baseball hard and often. -

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 01:26 PM) All those videos are from a two month span. It seems like you must not appreciate great range, but rather poor range and then some diving catch to make it look good. . LOL. Sure man, I MUST? Haha why must I? What a joke of a statement. Anyways, weird assumptions aside, I think WAR is useless comparing players with different skill sets. Actually, I think it's useless in general, but I guess it's a decent summary if for some reason ranking players excites you. We all know Juan was great on the catching part of defense last year. We also all know that he will be with a different team next year for the 6th time in his career; probably for the same 2-3 years that teams generally tolerate him for until they desire a corner OF with even a smidge of extra base power. I don't hate Juan Pierre as I don't hate any player, but he is what he is. Anybody can see that. That's why teams let him go. That's why he got benched for two years of his prime. Who cares about his range -
2011 Twins talent vs. White Sox talent

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 12:03 PM) The other way to look at it is that the Twins starting staff has been helped by having a consistently top of the league bullpen, including middle relief, so if their starters give them a decent outing, they can be bailed out. They've lost a lot from their pen this year (Rauch, Crain, Fuentes, Guerreir), and they're spending a ton of money on it. If Nathan comes back and is Nathan, they've still got it, but without him, they're iffy. I'm done saying the Twins pitching looks suspect on paper. As always, I'm sure that bullpen will be amazing. -
Yea, cmon we all watched Tank last year; we know he has as good a shot as anybody at being a MLBer. He put up good stats in limited time. Now i know you can say "wha wha small sample size" but he could have put up bad numbers but he didn't. He put up ridiculous numbers for a 20 yr old. Imagine if he put up horrible numbers last year, the talk would be different around here I guarantee it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2011 -> 09:45 AM) Really? Why do you disagree with that? I thought the fact that all Delmon Young does well on D is throw was pretty firmly established. Wasn't D.Young's July better than Pierre's entire career? I don't remember any Juan Pierre highlights except that one catch running to the line, but I remember D. Young carrying the Twins for a month or two. In this case, I say WAR/SHMORE. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 10:37 PM) A 6 man rotation is just never a good idea. Yea just one of those things that'll never happen.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jan 27, 2011 -> 08:59 PM) For those of you Freddy haters out there. Remember when the rest of the staff was sucking early on? Freddy went 4-1 in May and helped carry the team through June until they all got hot. Freddy was 4-0 in June as well. He did more than anyone expected and would be a great insurance policy for this ballclup! SIGN ME UP! Well said here. It's not a stat but Freddy was a flat-out winner last year and I love the idea of a 6 man for the 2nd half. Maybe that would help Gavin hold it together at the end.

I could be wrong but I think Dusty Baker's sandwich might have been better than Ozzie's. I forget the particulars of that city showdown.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 26, 2011 -> 06:23 PM) I would expect nothing less than this from somebody with your post count. But to me, the main Sox board should be reserved for White Sox related topics. And this has become a reoccurring theme around here of late. Just ditch the MLB thread all together if we're going to create threads for every little non-related Sox topic. Rocco Baldelli retired. We could start an appreciation thread since he almost came here 9 times.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jan 26, 2011 -> 11:20 AM) It's a typical KG ranking though. Escobar's a legit short stop prospect, in a weak system AND he's from Venezuela. He was bound to sit near the top of this list. Is Escobar supposed to pick it like Lexei?

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Jan 26, 2011 -> 06:28 PM) Of course, to state the obvious, it is important to remember that this is revenue. The payroll is only one element of the cost side of the equation. Wouldn't want to forget the thousands of White Sox employees would we? I wonder what TOTAL payroll is each year.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 11:55 AM) Not a one besides that. He plays a good LF as long as he doesn't have to throw the ball more than 5 feet. Other than that, he's slightly better than Pablo Ozuna. Don't forget the B+ in hustle he posted last year and the A+ in acting like his weak points get over-shadowed by his good points.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jan 25, 2011 -> 10:04 AM) Last 5 years 2006: 162 G 58 SB 20 CS 74.3 SB% 2007: 162 G 64 SB 15 CS 81.0 SB% 2008: 119 G 40 SB 12 CS 76.9 SB% 2009: 145 G 30 SB 12 CS 71.4 SB% 2010: 160 G 68 SB 18 CS 79.1 SB% Obviously he was not quite a full time player in 2008/2009 but the bolded of what you say doesn't really appear to be true. He had the most stolen bases of his career last year and stole at one of the higher rates of his career as well. Sweet. Does he have any other stats?

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jan 23, 2011 -> 10:58 PM) I want his bat on the opening day roster because he murders left handers so anything that keeps him there I am in favor . Me too. Is there any way possible that he could beat out Juan Pierre for Left Field? LA benched him for twice the price so money isn't an issue. That would give us something like: Rios Beckham Dunn PK Quentin Pierzynski Morel Ramirez Viciedo or some other way at the bottom to have a deadly turnover after the 1st inning.
