Kerry Wood signs 1 year, $1.5 million deal with Cubs
Jerksticks replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 17, 2010 -> 02:37 PM) It's a proper noun. This point you make matters less to me than almost anything on earth. That's hilarious. Thanks for the new line princess. -
QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 17, 2010 -> 07:17 PM) Agents and pitchers put big market teams on their no trade list so they get more money to waive the clause, King Felix has the top 10 market teams on his no trade list. He has two years left on his deal and will probably ask for some sort of an extension to waive for teams, so it has to be a combination of teams with the money to extend and quality prospects to make the deal happen. Teahen and flowers? Perhaps daisies?

I don't know how you guys can just capitalize the word "cubs" so carelessly. 7 years of talking baseball on the internet and I still can't do it. Makes me sick -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 16, 2010 -> 09:17 AM) This board's obsession with Joe Cowley is getting old. Every thread has Joe Cowley talk. Everyone, get over the fact that he ripped Soxtalk once! The only way I can kind of explain it is this- that there is some pride involved with breaking stories early that most men may never understand. I know I won't ever get it. Most men spend their days creating things, but then there is the other kind of man who doesn't create, a lesser man who has to analyze the moves of other, greater men. This is what a Cowley does and also some posters on here. If they find out a story a whole day before the rest of the world, then in their minds they can gloat for that 1 WHOLE day...until of course everyone else finds out and it becomes just old news. But I kinda get it- I can picture these men drooling over their precious early knowledge like it was a chest of gold...so sad. If only they liked their lives, none of this would be necessary. It's more of a failure to fully develop than anything else. Just let it be.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 11:43 AM) And looking at arbitrary separation points can lead to inflated values. Edwin Jackson had what I would classify as 1 bad start with the White Sox. On September 11th, Jackson put up a line of 5 IP, 13 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Excluding that start, Jackson put up: 2.70 ERA 1.10 WHIP 2.2 BB/9 9.5 K/9 1 HR/9 His September stats, excluding that number, are 4.05 ERA 1.17 WHIP 2.4 BB/9 7.8 K/9 1.35 HR/9 If he goes all of next year and only has 1 bad start out of every 11 like he did, he's going to be in contention for the Cy Young. Bingo. Count me in.

Multiple Sources: Sox actively shopping Quentin
Jerksticks replied to SoxFan1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) I'm of the opinion that, in modern times, any beat writer who only posts information that turns out to be correct, isn't working very hard. There's really no other way to look at it, as I think you hit the nail on the head. Who cares if this Cowley guy says the Sox are trading Quentin? I'm still gonna get up, go to work, check out some Soxtalk, go to bed and do it all over again. When there's news, there's news; and if Cowley wants to take some childish credit/pride for "knowing it first", well then God bless his little heart. This whole "contest" of who's breaking stories first is sad, real sad. Go give your family a hug instead. -
White Sox could be top 5 payroll team in 2011

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 05:18 PM) And I wouldn't overlook the fact that Sergio Santos had barely pitched prior to last season, and he had no idea what his future held in December of last year. At this point in time, he now has a full offseason to work and study pitching, to hone his control and command, and to do any other number of things. And I also wouldn't overlook the fact that, besides ANY of that, Sergio Santos is a relief pitcher who has a 95 MPH fastball and a ridiculous slider. Zach Duke surely didn't have that, and once Dontrelle Willis lost the ability to control the strike zone, he got knocked around. Bobby Crosby is an awful, awful player (I don't even understand the reason for bringing it up...he hit 22 homers his rookie year but wasn't good otherwise, he was OK his second year but got hurt, and he's been busy getting hurt or sucking at baseball ever since that point). Beckham struggled, as young players tend to do, but he bounced back pretty quickly and had a monstrous second half. I agree. It's unlikely that a man with his stuff has hit any sort of ceiling yet. -
QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 01:33 PM) Thank you for expressing your sentiments regarding Pierre. I've posted several extensive comments on White Sox Interactive about how I would like to see the Sox upgrade the outfield, starting with Pierre. The insults and attacks against my suggestions have been "over the top". Geez, I can't help it if a guy who can't drive the ball out of the infield doesn't excite me. Apparently, a lot of the guys on that board just think that it's all about stolen bases. Pierre can do that, but that's about all he can do. At any rate, it's nice to see that I'm not the only one who is not enamored with J. P.'s game. Yes, I think he is an awful fit for this team. And sweet stinkin sausage, at lead off of all places!?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 11:19 PM) Listening to KW's press conference today, I'd say little to nothing. They're going to have to make a trade. Totally. My question is this though: If we have to come in at 110M and we are currently at 118M if we bring everyone back, then do we have to trade away 13M worth of salary in order to spend roughly 5M on proven bullpen arms? 13M sounds like a lot of human capital to me, what am I missing? -
Crawford to Boston, $142 Million, 7 Years
Jerksticks replied to Leonard Washington's topic in The Diamond Club
As long as they still have Papelpits at the back end we shouldn't worry. His bad play could ripple through their team next year just like Bobby's doomed the 2010 Sox. -

So to the bullpen experts: how much additional money do we need to spend in order to solidify the bullpen? Lot of variables so please be opinionated. I just can't grasp how much salary we really need to shed via trade to accommodate these extra arms. If the payroll is at 118M right now and we need to be at 110M, do we need to shed roughly 13M? 16M? I have no clue. -
QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 07:38 PM) I agree. Pierre is a KW type of guy. Disagree. He seems more like an Ozzieball type of guy. .330 getting the most ABs with no extra-base possibility doesn't work for me. Works for me in the 9 hole but not at #1 again. I understand your side of the coin so I'll agree to disagree.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 06:18 PM) I agree. The Sox don't need to acquire a lead off hitter. My argument starts with the need to improve the outfield defense, while retaining Quentin, who no longer has the option to be the DH. If Quentin is in the outfield, he should be in Left. Then you need a better outfielder to play RF, or move Rios to RF, and play a better fielder in CF. Pierre has no place in that scenario. However, if the outfield addition can provide some offensive production, then you have the luxury of Rios leading off. That is how I got there. What is your suggestion? This is exactly how I see it as well; Pierre should not be starting on this team. Pierre doesn't seem like a KW-type player so I wouldn't be surprised to see something happen there. He's just too weak. If he stays I think he should bat 9th so he's the leadoff hitter 3 times per game instead of 4.

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 01:31 AM) Seriously, who in their right minds spends 10 million dollars to hurt a team not even in your own division? I don't know but it sure is funny. Makes me respect Jim a bit now I suppose.

Can we just give Crawford 5yrs 100M and call it an offseason? Sure looks like a HOFer
-
I'd actually be comfortable with Dunn/Viciedo as my 1B platoon. We could spend a good chunk of this supposed money in the outfield and finally get Pierre off full-time duty. That way 5 of these 6 get to play everyday: Dunn/Rios/CQ/Pierre/NewOFer/Viciedo. Dunn obviously gets to play nearly everyday and Rios should be out there most days as well; Pierre and Viciedo get the least naturally. That's a rotating DH.
-
Yes sir I agree. The cubs only needed to spend 3-5 million at first base since everyone knows this is a transition year anyway. Nothing like this was necessary so I see your point.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 07:31 PM) If Konerko goes elsewhere why does everyone like D. Lee so much better than Adam LaRoche ? LaRoche is 4 years younger than both Kornerko and Lee. Stops us from getting Pujols, silly.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 03:25 PM) This has been my stance as well. A good bullpen can shorten a game to 6 innings while an average pen will lose games from the 7th on. However, the bullpen is the most difficult part of the game to predict as well, as many have said. While it's only Dec. 7th., I'm concerned that the is no effort to improve the pen and that willbe the downfallof an otherwise very solid team. I feel ya but this is the only thing KW does: build teams. There's no way that a hole that is blatantly obvious to us casual fans flies over the radar of KW. Sit back, relax and strap it down my friend.

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 05:05 PM) Werth already has a ring and if the Nats win while he is there he gets to be a hero. Haha, the Killer W's now?

QUOTE (pktmotion @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) No kidding. I thought Bard or Ellsbury would certainly be going to SD. Are these guys similar to what we gave up for Peavy? Meaning, absolute garbage? If that's the case, then poor San Diego- having nothing to show for AGon or Peavy but Clayton Richard and his awful, awful splits. I know it's too early to tell, but what are the ceilings on some of these guys?
-
Kenny definitely alluded to the fact today that it isn't just about PK. The longer PK takes, the more guys KW potentially loses out on. AJ and AD deferred their money so The Sox could sign somebody else, number 1 choice being Paulie. So I guess we could get anybody- I don't know how to be a Sox fan anymore as I feel guilty being the spoiled kid asking for Jayson Werth on top of Dunn. Paulie too? haha this is nuts.
-
That was one of the most wonderful things I've ever listened to, firmly ahead of all types music.
-
Teahen's mentioned a few times that he's happy as long as he plays. He's not going to be playing much here, and I have to think there was some agreement about playing time between him and Kenny when the extension was signed. I think he gets traded for sure if only to give him a chance to play everyday somewhere else.

QUOTE (Real @ Dec 3, 2010 -> 12:12 AM) I would bet my house that Sale doesn't start the year in AAA. He'll be on the 25-man. If I could SuperAgree I would, but I'll settle with a regular agreement.
