scouts from 8 teams at Sox-Toronto series
MiddleCoastBias replied to scenario's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 16, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) If someone gets desperate enough to take on Linebrink's contract, and he's willing to accept the trade, you dump him in a second for anything you can get. More or less though, it is just an idle report. Kind of interesting, but not a whole lot there unless something else comes out. But I feel like if everyone on this board is "smart" enough to see that Linebrink is a first half pitcher and then completely collapses, can we really assume that there are teams out there that don't see that as well? I can't see anyone taking on his contract knowing full well his full body of work for an entire season. I know you're not trying to say that it's a strong possibility, I just don't even see it as a remote possibility. But goddamn, I would drive up from Arkansas to drive him to the airport (or walk him to the North Side) if someone were to bite. -
I've been forced to watch the Canadian feed streaming online this series (go America ), and I will say, even during Romero's gem, their analysts were still just talking about our bellpen. Game two of the series they spent 2 innings talking about Thornton, and how they were so impressed with him and hope to never face him again. That really says something about the respect our bullpen is getting when their own announcers are talking about our pitching while Romero is still on the mound throwing a no-hitter.

QUOTE (Tex @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 09:36 PM) By the the time he retires, he will be my favorite Sox player. Statisticians will try to find the magic stat that will answer your question, but it is elusive. The best way to describe it is "it", as in he has "it". I would also say confidence and a positive outlook. Seriously. How many other pitchers will willingly go up to their catcher and other teammates while on the bench in the 6th or after during a no hitter or perfecto, and just shoot the s*** like nothing is happening? Everyone else in that position is all uptight, and the team reacts as well. The tv shots of Buerhle joking with AJ after the 7th just show how relaxed and confident he is with what he is doing. Always calm and collected, he doesn't need the outward fire and flare that other pitchers have because he's confident in what he can do.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 11:36 PM) Jones has definitely had the nice HR output so far. Just like the Royals' Jose Guillen. Keep hitting 'em Mr. Jones. And keep playing 'em, Mr. Guillen.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 15, 2010 -> 12:07 AM) I hated Mike MacDougal. How's he doing? Was the full-time closer for the Nats last year. I actually brought my Dougy road Sox jearsey out to a game for him to sign last year when I lived there, figuring the 12 Nats fans there wouldn't even know him. He never even bothered to come out to the field. The Nationals have since released him, I don't know where he is now. EDIT: Upon looking at my post, I should clarify: yes, I actually do have a Mike MacDougal jersey. I don't think his own mother even has one. -

QUOTE (hogan873 @ Apr 14, 2010 -> 09:48 AM) One of these days Ozzie will go too far. He came pretty close on this one, but like others have said, stupid stuff like this is almost laughed at when coming from Ozzie. It would be a HUGE news story if Ron Gardenhire or Jim Leyland said it. Agreed. And I think Ozzie knows he has the golden ticket and can say whatever he wants. I fear that one day (like today) he'll say something that just goes absolutely too far, and then it isn't 'cute' for Ozzie to be Ozzie, it turns into a real liability.

My favorite random discussion point each spring

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 12, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Yes, I mean the 3rd catcher ON THE TEAM. Lucy is the 2nd catcher. I really doubt that they want Konerko doing that right now, with his age, hip, etc. My best guess is Nix, or maybe Vizquel. He's about 12 minutes away from requiring a prosthetic, and he'll qualify under AARP. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 11, 2010 -> 11:55 PM) The Sox didn't want to spend $1+ mill on a pitcher who essentially pitched in meaningless situations, even if he was very good at it. Considering the situation now (and I know how supposedly tight the money is), might it have been worth spending the $1M there to shore up the back-end pitching given how dependent this lineup is going to be on a stellar starting staff? Sure we don't have the room to spend the $5M to get a real DH, but if we really are going the full pitching route, why not make sure we have the depth in the pen to make sure we're not going to blow games late, or in the case of Carrasco, we can hold on to games that got out of hand early and give our bats a chance to wake up without blowing everyone's arm for the next 3 days?

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 11, 2010 -> 10:51 PM) The bullpen has been absolutely abused this week in terms of how much it's been used, particularly considering we don't have a long reliever. Combine that with Buehrle being in a major rhythm and ending up with a not too bad pitch count of 114, as well as the possibility of extra innings (and more bullpen overuse) looming along with 7 road games in 7 days starting tomorrow, and I don't see how anybody can argue he was left in too long honestly. It's slipping my mind now, but why again didn't we bring back Carrasco? Someone posted an article a ways back about the value of long relievers and he was far and away the best in some arbitrary rating system that I can't remember (yes, I know, I'm not really contributing anything at this point). Point is, Carrasco got a flack early but turned into a great long guy, and I can't remember why we didn't bring him back. Was it that he wanted to be a starter somewhere..?

Things seen/heard at Opening Day

What's the new opener like that they play on the big screen before Thunderstuck? Did they use the same theme/song? Anyone have a link to a video of it? -
Useful shot, lad. Well done!

Does KW now make a play for Cust on the cheap?
MiddleCoastBias replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (chw42 @ Apr 5, 2010 -> 09:40 AM) Yes, but no. I would really like somebody like Cust in this lineup, a power lefty bat who can DH and platoon with Jones. Let's all hope that Mark Kotsay sucks enough for KW to pull the trigger somehow. I'm not digging this platoon idea. If we're going to platoon players, leave it with the Jones/Kotsay bag we have right now and see how that works out. If we decide it's not working, go out and get a full-time DH and scrap this platoon idea for good. -
QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Apr 4, 2010 -> 09:44 PM) Okay i'm watching the Sox/Yanks and it's decided: I'm skipping all my classes (I have class from 1-4). The question is: how do I avoid failing my mandatory class? It will take some squirming but I have confidence in my bulls***ing abilities. The Sox are just worth sacrificing for, especially this season Two years ago I skipped a quiz that was 10% of my semester grade for the 1st game of the playoffs. That game was then rain-delayed, and I missed my quiz for nothing. The following week when the prof handed back the quizzes, he was like "I didn't give your quiz back, did you take it?" I just shook my head, shrugged, and said "playoffs." He dropped that quiz for me.
