  1. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Mar 22, 2011 -> 03:12 PM) It was marketed as a burger for grown ups. I think it was 1/3 pound with bacon, some spicy sauce, and served on a thick bun. It's called the Big N' Tasty now. McDLT = Arch Deluxe = Big N' Tasty.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 21, 2011 -> 10:42 AM) That is how they make people pay taxes on vehicles. Cigarettes are also a big one they want people to report on their tax forms. But my point remains the same. Why should I pay taxes on something if I buy it in another state when I can't get it in my own state?
  3. QUOTE (Tex @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 04:01 PM) Only if you had the item shipped to you. If you bought it, and paid the sales tax, you would not need to pay a second sales tax. They way I read it was that it's for anything you buy out of state. Having something shipped to you is just the most common way. http://www.revenue.state.il.us/Individuals...e-Tax.htm"" target="_blank">Illinois State Website From the FAQS
  4. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 12:20 PM) The last few jobs I got in the IT industry were through recruiters who often get you interviews without the need of cover letters. Many companies, such as mine, used recruiters to fill positions, and often went with who recruiters sent their way vs people sending blind resumes for their public job postings. Same with me although with my first job the recruiter actually found me. I applied for one job and she called me and told me that position was no longer open but there was a position with another company that she knew about if I wanted to apply for it instead. The job I have now I found through a former co-worker. I've filled out 100's of applications both online and in person and gotten a few interviews but that's all. Knowing somebody is definitely the key.
  5. I got this in my email on Saturday. People don't really fall for these things anymore do they? I haven't been an AOL customer since the mid 90's. While I'm certainly glad this came to their "attension" it's too bad the "massage" already expired.
  6. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 10:12 AM) Of course every recruiter will have a different idea of what they want to see in a resume but their are many key parts that many students don't know, for example, don't just put down what your title meant, but how you improved the organization or team during your tenure. It is expected that a Philanthropy Chair held events to raise money, but did you really do better than your predecessor, what skills did you use to improve your position. I’ve always had trouble doing this. I was with my previous employer for 11 years but when I sat down to write out my resume I really had to ask myself, what the hell did I actually *DO* in those 11 years? I’ve never been about to actually quantify my work into numbers besides the number of projects I worked on. I can’t say that any of them saved the company X number of dollars or allowed them to sell X amount of product. Typically the stuff I did was to make the job of somebody else slightly easier.
  7. Link Sounds like they are trying to get all 50 states to do the same thing Illinois is now doing or make a federal law. Which is the only way it would make sense. This was interesting though: Quinn had to know they would do the same thing here. Shocking. I don’t entirely agree with the use tax anyway. If I go to another state and buy a souvenir while I’m there (say like a shirt or a hat with the name of the place I’m at) I’m expected to report and pay Illinois tax on that if the place I bought it happens to charge less sales tax?
  8. QUOTE (The Critic @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 05:15 AM) Holy s***. I felt my brain melting and dripping out of my earhole. That is awful, even by Disney Channel "standards". I don't know if that girl is a Disneybot, but she sure seems to be. I finally watched this last night since I kept reading about it everywhere and it was up to 13 million views on YouTube. Then they played it and made fun of it on the radio this morning so now I actually have it stuck in my head. Honestly, I don't see much difference between this song and every other Disney/Nickelodeon/bubble gum pop song that's come out in the last few years.
  9. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 05:00 PM) Iowa isn't exactly close enough to draw fans away from going to the Cubs like a suburban AAA affiliate would be. That really makes it the perfect distance away then. Close enough to become a fan of the regular team and make a few road trips to Chicago throughout the year but not so close as to draw fans away from watching the MLB team. We had a Cubs affiliate in Rockford at one time in the late 90’s too. The Rockford Cubbies. Puke. Now we have a team from an independent league.
  10. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 09:09 AM) There isn't much you can do anymore. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 06:47 PM) There aren't good solutions to the global problems that capitalism are presenting right now. OK. What do we do about the problem this thread is about? The fact that companies are leaving Illinois to go to other states?
  11. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 06:52 AM) Nate Dogg, age 41 I remember when I played baseball in HS we listened to Regulate on the bus all the time.
  12. QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 09:09 PM) Anyone listen to B&B on the Score? The tournament of bad brackets were announced today. The Japanese housing market is my pick to win it all! http://chicago.cbslocal.com/tournament-of-bad/ I'm wondering what Jason Goff's #2 seed is...
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 05:19 PM) You're not doing a lot to convince me otherwise, there. You're basically saying that we need to keep giving in to the demands of businesses more and more or they'll ship our jobs to another state (or more likely another country). Like I said, the most business-friendly environment is a pretty terrible environment and that isn't what states should be trying to out-do each other to reach. edit: my snarky posts don't mean I don't understand and haven't considered what you posted before you posted it. So what is it that we should do to keep companies from shipping our jobs to another state/country? Obviously passing this bill wasn't the solution.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 14, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) 3) The "Impossible Skillset liar-face". Example Skillset: Windows 7, Windows XP, *nix (Linux/Unix), Mac OSX, VAX, Mainframe, C++, Java, C#, Scripting, Perl, PHP, HTML, Cisco Routers/Firewalls, Checkpoint, etc... Basically, they claim to know everything about everything related to a specific industry. These are immediately dismissed, because no you don't...and if you did, you wouldn't have to look for jobs...ever, because jobs would look for you. I swear I've seen job openings that have required that much skill and more. I never applied at those places because it's probably just a company that needs a "computer guy" and they really have no idea what skills are needed for the position.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 10, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) It would be pretty easy as an admin... Just because something is deleted, it doesn't mean it doesn't exist anymore.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 11, 2011 -> 09:00 AM) I'm pretty sure you're still supposed to report and pay that tax as the consumer, but no one does. from yahoo: http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/r-article-a...it_who_doesnt-i Consumers' Responsibility to Pay Sales or Use Taxes Consumers who live in a state that collects sales tax are technically required to pay the tax to the state even when an Internet retailer doesn't collect it. When consumers are required to pay tax directly to the state, it is referred to as "use" tax rather than sales tax. The only difference between sales and use tax is which person -- the seller or the buyer -- pays the state. Theoretically, use taxes are just a backup plan to make sure that the state collects revenue on every taxable item that is purchased within its borders. But because collecting use tax on smaller purchases is so much trouble, states have traditionally attempted to collect a use tax only on big-ticket items that require licenses, such as cars and boats. Some states, including Connecticut, Maine, Nebraska, New Jersey, and North Carolina, have changed their attitudes and are stepping up efforts to collect use taxes. But bureaucracy, complex tax rules, and limited state resources have thus far prevented most states from pursuing use taxes. Since state governments are losing substantial revenue, the collection of use taxes may become a priority if the federal government continues its ban on Internet e-commerce taxes. You are supposed to report anything you bought out of state and brought back to Illinois. In fact, I remember this exact question coming up on TurboTax when I did my taxes a few weeks ago. Of course I'm sure everyone kept all their receipts of out-of-state purchases and filled in the proper amount on their 1040 this year...
  17. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Mar 11, 2011 -> 12:25 AM) Glad I'm not the only one that doesn't care for college sports. I have no interest in watching a second rate product. Give me the NBA and NFL all day. Same here. The only reason I pay any attention to March Madness is so I know how much longer I have to put up with it until baseball season starts.
  18. I got a FB invite to another one of those stupid "no gas" days that never work. I will actually be taking part in it simply because it falls on a Thursday. I don't get gas on that day. I do get it on Wednesday and Friday though. I'll certainly show those evil oil companies!
  19. QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Mar 7, 2011 -> 07:54 AM) Off the top of my head- http://www.greatwolf.com/dells/waterpark I was going to suggest Mt. Olympus for the coasters and go karts but then I noticed your kids are 6 and 9, so they might not have as much to do. You can trip and fall on (good) mini-golf in the Dells though. If you don't want to stay at Great Wolf, find a cheaper place and go to Noah's Ark (waterpark). Mt. Olympus has tons of stuff for younger kids. They just added more stuff in the last few years and there is an entire indoor area that has a bunch of rides for the younger aged kids. Plus all the go-carts are 2-seaters so you can bring the kids with you. I can't say how the hotel part is because we usually bring our pop-up trailer with us and stay at one of the nearby campgrounds for the weekend. The last time we were there we paid for an all-day pass on Saturday and got a pass for the next day for free.
  20. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 10:35 AM) So how can you say you don't like them then??? Seems like you haven't even watched them haha I didn't say I disliked them. But obviously I can't love something I've never seen. It's just things that everyone else seems to love.
  21. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 10:32 AM) What do you do in the baseball offseason then??? I still watch football and basketball sometimes.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Mar 8, 2011 -> 10:28 AM) After reading this I have decided that you are lame. Yea, I know.
  23. Beer and coffee. I can’t stand the taste of either one. Music. It’s not that I don’t like music. I just don’t get into it as much as most people. Most of the time I’m perfectly happy listening to whatever is playing on the radio. I got an MP3 player a few years ago for Christmas and put a couple dozen songs on it but I rarely used it. I ended up giving it to my daughter when hers quit working. I just got a newer MP3 player this past Christmas but I have yet to actually add any songs to it. Football. I like to play it sometimes both in real life and as a video game. I’ll watch a few Bears games during the season but I really can’t call myself a fan. If they win, that’s cool. If they lose, no big deal. Baseball has always been my first sports love. Any number of popular TV shows like The Office, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, etc… I might like them if I actually sat down and watched them but I just don’t have the time right now.
  24. I think having a minor league team closer would be a good thing. How many bus loads of people show up at Wrigley Field every year from Iowa because they are fans of the Iowa Cubs?
  25. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 3, 2011 -> 06:05 PM) This is more true than you may want to believe. This is the reason for scholastic organizations, job fairs, and networking sessions. To get to a high level within the real world, no matter your profession, you really need to know people and to have their trust. Sure, some of it will be proving what you know, but when you get to a certain level of the professional world, when comparing two equal candidates, the one who is more well known within the company by anybody - whether it through a connection of another company or within the company itself - is going to get that job. I can tell you one thing, I am dealing with it right now. I am more than qualified for an entry level job in the business world, but because I really don't have any good connections, I have struggled getting a job to the point where I am just looking for any job because I need money. If I planned on being in Bismarck for longer than 6 months, there would be several professional organizations I would try to get involved in. However, I don't plan on being in Bismarck long, so at this point it's getting a job that has some intrinsic value (looking at being a server at a restaurant, where I will at least be able to get some type of customer service experience on my resume, though I have several other outstanding applications to businesses around the area) so I can have at least some money when I do eventually move away. I don't think I've ever gotten a job where I didn't know somebody (or knew somebody who knew somebody else) within the company. Even the s***ty retail jobs I had in high school I got through connections.
