QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jan 5, 2007 -> 09:24 AM) Easily my favorite one was the original Tickle Me Elmo. Those things were selling for a ridiculous amont over retail, and about 2-4 weeks after X-Mas they were on the shelves at all toy stores. It was all for a toy for kids who could never appreciate how much their parents went through and paid to get it. Basically the parents wanted to tell their friends that they go their kids one... The TMX elmo was doing the same thing earlier this year. I don't think the hype got quite as big as the original one though. When the original came out we bought one for my daughter in August. Just picked it up off the shelves and didn't think anything off it. Then suddenly a couple of months later people are fighting in stores over the damn things and selling them in the newspaper for $100. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2007 -> 09:22 AM) Especially since the samething happens time and time again. You think people would figure this out. I was saying it when I heard people talking about how they planned on waiting in line for days to get one. It's like the guy that goes flying past you at 60 MPH just so he can stop at the same exact red light 8 seconds sooner. I laugh at those idiots too.

QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 08:38 PM) don't do it for ebay if you're thinking about it, saw some go for under retail a couple weeks ago It's amazing to think that people were paying double and triple retail value just 2 weeks ago.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2007 -> 08:00 AM) FWIW., they said ratings have crashed big time. It's probably my fault. I never watched the show. Hell, I don't even know what channel it was on...

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 5, 2007 -> 02:25 AM) I had a shot at a 300 game once, but I choked in the 2nd frame. I've done that many times. It gets nerve-wracking realizing your only 11 strikes away doesn't it?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 01:19 PM) Presumably, the disk would probably have to have had the madden label on it for anyone to give this story enough credibility to publish. It's interesting that the picture they show with the article just shows the case. Not the disk itself...
-
OK, one thing I want to know... Is an actual Madden disc with porn on it or was there an actual porn disc inside the package? One would think the kid at least looked at the top of the disc before he started playing it.

QUOTE(PAUL KONERKO 14 @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 09:34 AM) The best I've bowled is like 160 I once bowled a 0. Nothing but gutter balls the entire game. I was only 5 or 6 at the time but it was league bowling so it counted. I was PO'd about something the entire game and just kept flinging the ball. I don't remember what my other 2 games were.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 07:39 PM) i haven't ugraded from VHS yet. We have any BETA users who can top me here? I'm VHS too. My wife uses it everyday to record her soap. I've got a DVD recorder but the clock likes to reset itself so I don't trust setting it to record at a certain time.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 04:40 PM) 5) I managed to bowl 18 strikes in a row without getting a 300 game. Game 2 was spare, then 11, game 3 was 7 then 3 splits. But at least I got a 700 series. I managed to blow a 300 game and an 800 series in the same 3-game series. I messed up my 300 in my first game in the 11 frame. Then in my third game all I needed to do was spare my last frame and I got a split! Ended up with a 796.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Jan 2, 2007 -> 01:13 PM) lol, can a regular canoe paddle be detected on radar? I have no idea.
-
Just cause I'm bored... 1. When I was in jr. high I took what was being called a "computer class" at one of the local factories in Rockford. They made parts for the military stealth bombers. So we made a canoe paddle out of the same material. It couldn't be detected on radar. 2. I once pitched 14 innings in a fast-pitch softball game. I don't remember if we won or lost. 3. I have a Husky named Nunook. I picked the breed and the name because of the movie "The Lost Boys". 4. I got blood poisoning when I was 5 or 6. I got this huge splinter in my hand that didn't want to come out. So I went to school with it still in my hand and while I was in class, I dropped my pencil. When I went to pick it up, another kid stepped on the eraser end, causing the pointy end to go right into where the splinter was. Worst pain of my life. 5. I've never gotten rid of a single video game system or game. I still own (and play) Atari, Odessey, NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2. My kids have a Gameboy color, Gameboy Advance, DS, N64 and Gamecube. 6. I never got to see the original Comiskey Park in person. My first game was in 1991. 7. I became a Sox fan largely because of a Cubs fan. When we'd play baseball on my previously mentioned NES, he'd always pick the Cubs. I wanted to be a "local" team so I'd pick the Sox. My interest grew from there.

Five more... 1. I own every Weird Al Yankovic CD and have seen him in concert 3 times. 2. I own nearly every Stephen King book in both paperback and hardcover. 3. I have 99% of all the He-Man Toys released in the 80s'. I'm missing less than 10 figures and one playset. 4. Once, while driving to work, I hit a cow. I missed the other 20 or so standing in the middle of the road. 5. I was 27 when I finally got my first brand-new, store-bought bicycle.
-
1. I bowled my first (and so far only) 300 game when I was 15. 2. I have an uncle that is exactly 363 days older than me. 3. Between my wife, three kids and I the initials of our first names go in alphabetical order J,K,L,M,N. 4. I have never had a broken bone. 5. I met my wife when I was 15 and a junior in high school. We got married 6 years later and have been together ever since.

QUOTE(SnB @ Dec 26, 2006 -> 03:15 PM) What would be a good way to transfer the files i want to the new hard drive? (it's mostly just music) You may be able to hook up a second drive as a slave drive. Then it's just cut and paste.

I get Christmas Day and New Year's Day both off. So basically I get two 3-day weekends in a row and two 4-day work weeks in a row. If I was smart, I would've just taken Tues-Fri off next week...

How are you and yours during this fine Yuletide Season?
Iwritecode replied to Texsox's topic in SLaM
Just finished up my shopping yesterday. The only thing left is some wrapping. -
I think I'm one of the last people in the world that still has a waterbed. I love it. Keeps me nice and warm in the winter. That is a huge factor considering my bedroom is in the basement. It also has 2 sets of drawers underneath it so it sits about 3 feet off the ground.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 19, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) I purposely mentioned the monetary investment because people are more likely to acquire free music than free DVDs or books. That's funny because I'm the exact opposite. I've gotten tons of books over the years as gifts or I'll pick them up for a buck or two myself. Very rarely do I buy one brand-new. I haven't gotten much free music although I don't have much anyway. I guess my final answer would be movies. I've got a bunch of DVD box sets. Most of them are $20 or more per set and it's rare to find them used.
-
I'm not really sure how to answer this question. At first I thought it was which do you have more of? That's fairly easy. Books first, movies a close second, music a distant third and magazines an even more distant last. The thing is, I'd say a good 80% of my books came used. It's amazing how many people sell perfectly good books for 50 cents to a dollar at garage sales. I've got a ton of books that I read when I was growing up. Mostly Charlie Brown/Peanuts, "Ramona" books by Beverly Cleary, "Soup" books by Robert Newton Peck. Now my shelves are filled with mostly Stephen King books. I've only been buying DVDs since about 2000. I'd say about half of them I got new. Many of them I got from a used DVD store or even the $5 grab bin at Wal-Mart. I've been buying CDs since about 1992 but I don't have very many. Probably less than 150. I don't listen to music all that much. I had a subscription to a magazine through EB games because it gave me a discount on a game I was buying. I think it lasted 2 years and then I never renewed it. I used to have a subscription to Nintendo Power back when that was the only system around.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 14, 2006 -> 10:40 PM) Around here we have hundreds of thousands of retirees. Store bought decorations?! Too expensive. They collect their garbage all year and figure out how to light it up. My favorite was the 8oz clear drink glasses, glued together and lights stuck inside like a giant lighted ornament. I've seen beer can santas, soda bottle elves, and more coffee filter snowflakes than I can count. QUOTE(mreye @ Dec 15, 2006 -> 08:09 AM) My Grandma bought / received as a gift one of those. Most God-awful ugliest thing I've ever seen! I've seen those things and always thought they were pretty cool. But it's been proven I have no taste in many things (mostly music and clothes) so I'm not suprised. A few years ago my wife made a Christmas tree with 6 wire coat hangers, some garland and a string of lights. She made quite a few and gave them to family and friends.

QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Dec 13, 2006 -> 08:22 PM) How long is 'awhile'? Digital camcorders have been out in the US for 7-8 years. I'm still using a VCR rather than a DVD recorder or DVR. Does that tell you anything?
-
Compared to the regular price, I'm sure it's a pretty good deal. I'm just the type of person that doesn't get into the newer technology until it's be around for awhile and the prices have dropped significantly. I just got my first DVD recorder last year. I still have a regular tube TV, I still have a regular computer monitor, I don't own an MP3 player or a DVR and I've just started getting into digital cameras about 2 years ago.
-
No wonder I'm so behind the times technology-wise. $270 is a good deal for a digital camcoder? I don't think I spent more than $100 for my current one that uses tape.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 12, 2006 -> 06:05 PM) I got a .25% off for using direct deposit with my checking account there, and another .25% off for being there a long time. I ended up with 6.65% for 4 years, when the dealership was trying to do 11% for 4 , hell maybe 5, years I got a 5-year loan with some outrageous interest rate when I bought my first car from a dealer. Back when I was younger and dumber. By the time I was into about the 3rd year of the loan, I owed more that what the car was worth. I eventually got into an accident and they totaled it. Probably the best thing that could have happened to me because I finally got out from under the loan. I only had to come up with $600 out of my own pocket because the check from the insurance company wasn't quite enough to pay it off. Since then I've stuck with private owners and gotten loans from my bank. One of my vehicles is already paid off and the other will be in about 4 months.
