  1. QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 10:32 AM) I bowled with my daughter in an adult/youth baker tournament on Saturday. We did ok but it was very hot and humid. Almost like their AC couldn't keep up. Everything felt wet. Even the drink we bought was sweating like mad. We had a target score of 688 (over 4 games) and bowled 695. Our lowest game was a 130 and that was the last game where I got tired and lost my line. I missed a 10-pin in the 9th frame that could've helped. We ended up tied for 10th in the tournament. 10 more pins and we would've been in 4th. That missed 10 pin really sticks with me now.
  2. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 02:03 PM) Yes. What's it called?
  3. Is there a stat out there that shows the team win/loss record for a particular pitcher's start? Like say a pitcher made 33 starts in a season. What was the team's win/loss record for those 33 games? Or is that something you would have to calculate by hand? I'm just curious how that stat would look for Quintana compared to other top-tier starters.
  4. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 22, 2016 -> 10:16 AM) Yes, because wins don't matter in baseball. The teams with the highest WAR make the playoffs. team wins =/= individual pitcher wins.
  5. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 17, 2016 -> 11:37 AM) Actually if you are talking about JR he IS the majority owner. The Sox have so many investors that his share (speculated at up to 33%) puts him in the drivers seat. AND this is more important in his contract he is allowed to run the day to day operations of the franchise without interference from the other board members. Basically he has total complete control in all aspects. I've heard that some other members of the board of directors do want to sell, in fact last year (I think) there was a long detailed story in the Tribune talking about the future of the franchise and quoted sources as confirming this. But...those people are powerless to force anything on JR because of his contract. JR is an exceptionally smart and astute business man. Mark I found this article from 2013. It says that the board numbered 10 members at the time. A few members said that he only owned 14 percent but JR says that number is low.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 16, 2016 -> 06:34 PM) Bruce Levine/Jim Margalus Meanwhile, in other media speculation, Jerry Reinsdorf shot down Bruce Levine's idea that the Sox might consider selling at the All-Star break: As for the speculation in my story, Reinsdorf told me in his own instructive way that he had no plans for anything but a full-out attack on helping his front office find a way to win now. The meeting was brief and friendly. Knowing Reinsdorf for many years, I knew he was suggesting that although I wasn’t hurting anyone with my "panning for gold" speculation, rebooting and selling off wasn’t in the organization’s plans. He's still talking about being a seller at the trade deadline, not about selling the team. It doesn't matter either way because he's not the majority owner. He's just the face of the ownership group.
  7. I thought dating somebody you work with was against the "unwritten rules" of dating?
  8. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 15, 2016 -> 03:27 PM) False. Yea, it's only 9 of their last 10.
  9. Bowling is an indoor sport but it can still be miserable bowling in the summertime when the outside temp is 90+. I bowled with my daughter in an adult/youth baker tournament on Saturday. Then last night I took my ball out and realized I made a mistake leaving it in the trunk all day. It got so hot that some of the oil actually leaked out of it. All the tape in my thumb hole melted and fell out the first time I tried to throw it so I had a sticky mess from the residue. I've been thinking about going to a switch-grip but not sure if the expense is worthwhile.
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 14, 2016 -> 09:53 AM) I remember being in my dorm room in the Fall of '95 and doing Google and Yahoo searches and there being hardly any hits. Yahoo maybe but I don't think Google came along until a couple years later.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 13, 2016 -> 04:33 PM) The FBI had him in its radar. Thus as my President said, he SHOULD NOT have been allowed to buy a gun. Check Obama's comments. He is right. http://lawnewz.com/opinion/how-orlando-mas...i-threat-radar/ He had just as much of a right to purchase and own a weapon as you currently do. Honestly though, based on your posting here, I'm not sure I'd feel safe with you owning a gun either...
  12. QUOTE (Baron @ Jun 13, 2016 -> 03:32 PM) Extra points for whoever can tell me what movie that is from Independence Day
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2016 -> 11:36 AM) There are a group of satellites out there that are visible from Earth if you know where to look, which means they have to be huge. At my campground a couple of weeks ago I had a friend tell me about a website that will let you know when the ISS will be visible. He said that it would be visible that night at 9:02 PM for about 6-7 minutes traveling from the SE to the NW. It was a perfectly clear night so we stood out and watched and sure enough at 9:02 we saw it. We got to watch it travel across the entire sky. It was pretty cool.
  14. I don't understand why there has to be an extreme side to the fire/keep Robin argument. Nobody is saying that if he's fired that the team will suddenly rebound and win 100 games. On the other hand, nobody is saying that he's the sole reason the team has been in a horrible funk the last month either. Yes he can only play the hand he was dealt but it's up to him to put each player in the absolute best position to succeed. Whether that's where they bat in the lineup, how often they play, telling them when to bunt, a steal, hit & run or putting the right relief pitcher in at the right time. It's nearly impossible to put a number on how much influence a manager has his teams wins and loses but I do believe there are some that are better at in than others.
  15. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jun 8, 2016 -> 02:48 PM) Historically though that philosophy has been in place almost from the start as at the first press conference EE said (paraphrasing) 'the way to win is with trades and free agent signings not the minor league system.' And that certainly worked early in the 80's when the Sox spent a lot of money and had a guy like Roland Hemond around to execute it pretty well as G.M. Mark One division title and a single playoff win isn't exactly what I would call winning baseball.
  16. Maybe the question at this point isn't so much who can do better but can anyone else be any worse? Maybe it's making a change for the sake of making SOME sort of change but a new voice in the clubhouse could spark something.
  17. I joined a short 10-week summer league with my family. It's all 9-pin no-tap. Very first game I got a 296. Of course the very last shot I made the ball simply didn't hook at all. The next 2 games were ok but not great. I'm just glad I don't have to worry about picking up the corner pins when I leave them! I haven't bowled regularly since April so trying to get back into the routine. I was hoping playing softball would help but my arm is still a little sore.
  18. Pennywise the Dancing Clown is returning.
  19. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jun 6, 2016 -> 09:08 PM) And at the end of the day all this is moot; credit shmedit. Either you have some capital to take out a loan or you don't. Either your income and history looks like you can pay it back or it doesn't. I'd argue it's a big waste of time to worry about a fluctuating credit score. Either you can cut a deal with a lender or not. The biggest difference in having a good credit score and an excellent credit score is the interest you pay on loans. Even with a 3 or 4 year car loan your interest rate can make a difference of a few thousand dollars. So having a better credit score can actually save you money. I grabbed this from a random article about credit scores. That's a lot of extra money for having a worse credit score.
  20. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ May 31, 2016 -> 10:15 AM) Not sure if this would be the appropriate thread but since when do you need to be a spouse or a significant other to cosign on a loan for a relative? Must be something fairly new. I co-signed a car loan just last year for a friend I'm not even related to. Had no problems with it. I had my parents co-sign for a car loan when I was 19. QUOTE (kevo880 @ May 31, 2016 -> 12:30 PM) I received a letter in the mail from Chase informing me they are closing a credit card account of mine due to inactivity and that there's nothing that I can do about it. Have any of you had this happen? It doesn't bother me aside from the negative hit to my credit score. I had that happen once with a Capital One card. It only had like a $200 limit and I never used it. You'll take a small temporary hit to your credit score. But unless you are obsessed with having a perfect score, it shouldn't affect you too much.
  21. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 1, 2016 -> 09:09 PM) Believe they stopped physical notifications to save money. The good news is that they quit charging late fees until they start sending out the reminders again. This was only after they collected millions of dollars in fines between January and March. Link
  22. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ May 27, 2016 -> 11:23 AM) I have a confession. One time when I was 11 years old I was offered, and accepted, a participation trophy for playing Little League that year. My team was in second place and I didn't really do anything special to stand out. As a result, my entire life from that point forward (high school achievements, my internship, being a manager at Blockbuster, my military career, college, my current job) has been a fraud. I would like to apologize to my teammates (even though they, too, accepted the same trophies), my parents, James Harrison, and Donald Trump. I let you all down.
  23. We played the last game of the first half of our season last night. Finished the half with a record of 6 - 1. The one game we lost was because we were playing short-handed for the first few innings because one of our players came late. Surprisingly we didn't have any rain-outs. There was one night were we played but none of the other teams did because the rain came afterwards. Somehow they have us on the schedule for a makeup game though. I've been manning the hot corner pretty regularly and aside from one or two times where there seemed to be a hole in my glove, I've done pretty well overall IMHO.
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 26, 2016 -> 11:58 PM) Now if you want to know what Johnny can do to avoid getting a C- or D in the future, fine, but don't blame the teacher if Johnny sucks at Math or can't write a sentence please. I don't completely blame the teachers for a kid failing but I think they do share some responsibility. Not all kids learn the same way. My daughter failed a math class a few years ago. Then when she re-took the class the next year with a different teacher, she passed it. I asked her what the difference was since it was the exact same class and she said the second teacher explained things in a way she understood better.
  25. At my HS ALL the seniors are exempt from finals. Their last day is actually the week before finals. So they get a 2 week break between their last class and graduating. I'm pretty sure it was that way when I went there too. Although I do remember one computer class where our "final" was to sit in and watch the movie War Games while eating popcorn and drinking pop.
