Cell phone video taken from the car to go along with the already released aerial video I guess the lesson to be learned here is that if you spend 5 minutes yelling at the cops "shoot me" and "kill me", then drive past a road block, jump out of your car yelling "you're gonna have to shoot me", and then reach for a weapon inside your jacket... you are going to get shot. The fact that they had kids in the car the whole time really makes me sick to my stomach as well.

2015 - 2016 Bowling Season

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 7, 2016 -> 11:29 AM) So Saturday was the last night of the regular season. We were 1 point in first, playing one of the teams near the bottom. The team in second was playing the team in 3rd, so we hoped they would give them a run for their money. First, no help from them, they all showed up drunk after attending one of the many irish parades that day. They got killed all 3 games. So we had to sweep. I bowled a 220, 191 and 202, not a bad night. The anchor bowler on the other team had a 222 his first game, which was his LOWEST of the day (190 avr). We won the first 2 barely, and the third we ended up losing by 60 pins, thanks to his 297. Oh well, playoffs! 297? Ouch. Somebody got nervous on their last shot. My daughter started her travel league 2 weeks ago. First week one kid shot a 299 and another had a 300. 2nd week the kid that had the 300 the first week throws ANOTHER 300. I'm just happy if my kid averages over 150... Couple of question for you guys: Do you have a spare ball? Do you have more than one "primary" ball depending on lane conditions? I've seen people that come in with 4, 5, 6 (or more) different balls. Personally, I've spent most of my life bowling with one single ball. Oily lanes, dry lanes, 10 pins... I simply adjusted my shot accordingly. Just last year I finally got a new ball and kept my old ball for a spare ball. Although on a couple of occasions I used it as my primary ball. I'm only bowling for fun so it's not a big deal. Right now my daughter is the same way. She uses one ball and adjusts. One of her coaches has suggested getting a spare ball. The ball she has now is probably one step up from a plastic ball. It's also the first ball she's ever had that's fingertip. She's been using it for a couple of years but I'm debating if I should get her a more aggressive ball and she can use her current one as a spare ball or if I should simply get her a plastic ball to use for spares. Or maybe I should break down and get both? -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 3, 2016 -> 11:47 AM) I dont know man, I think the target audience is the original audience, now grown up. Kids whose parents were the original primary demo arent going to understand the many references to the original show I'm trying to remember back to the original show and whether they focused on the kids more or the adults. It seems to me like it was a mix of both until the girls got a little older. Then they started getting into the typical sitcom kids plots. The new show seems to focus more on the adults.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Mar 3, 2016 -> 09:10 AM) Very nice series. I have only been over 700 twice. My average on Tuesdays has been dropping like a rock due to my recent inability to adjust. At least this Tuesday I held form, all games in the 180's (average dropped to 180 now). How many more reg weeks left for you? I think we have 5 weeks left. I'd like to get my average up a few more pins, but this late in the season it will be difficult. I'll be happy if I can end with at least 195. -
Here is an article about an old script that may or may not be outdated. It has a few spoilers as to what we may expect to see in January. It sounds like they are going to take parts from a few of the books (mostly 1, 2 and 7) and squeeze them into the first movie and may even change a few important plot points. Like what happens to Jake in the tunnel and even Roland's entire reason for the journey. This article made me feel a little bit better, but I'm still not sure I'm going to like it. The absolute worst thing that could happen is that the first movie crashes and burns and they never get around to finishing it. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 06:24 PM) Harry Potter is really a straightforward story though. Steven King books are anything but, there is a lot of first person thoughts and feelings that tend to get lost in his movies(IMO). That's undoubtedly true. I think that's why movies like Shawshank and Stand By Me were both really great adaptions. They both had narrators to explain those inner thoughts and feelings.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 2, 2016 -> 02:38 PM) The fact that they chose Elba doesn't bother me in the least. I just worry that the size and scope of this story is just far too big for a series of movies They managed it with Harry Potter...

Stephen King's The Dark Tower finally being made into a film. I have a really bad feeling about this. A lot of talk has already been stirred up at the fact they are casting Idris Ebla to play a character that was originally based on Clint Eastwood. My concern is that they aren't going to be true to the books at all in an attempt to appeal to the wider masses. They've already had news about casting a character that literally appears on only one page and not until book 7. I'm not even sure she had any spoken lines in the book.

2015 - 2016 Bowling Season

I had my best night of the year last night. 235, 225, 238 for a 698 series. Of course I'm kicking myself because I missed an easy spare on my very last shot of the 3rd game. It was the 2 -4. If I would've hit those two pins, I would've gotten my 700 series. I had no idea at the time though. But we won 3 games and the second place team only won 1, so our lead is back up to 3 games. I managed to bring my average up a pin to 194. -
The Cubs invited a bunch of clowns to spring training. Literally...

I forgot to post my scores last week from my Tues league but they were nothing to brag about. I know I had a 600 series, but just barely. 604 IIRC and I had a 248 game in there as well. The other two games were just awful. Our first place lead is down to 1 game with 6 weeks to go. My past Sunday night league with my daughter was even worse. We were in 2nd place but dropped all the way to 6th. I did better last night shooting in the upper 190's for both games. She's certainly improving though. Last week she tied me for one game and last night she had a 195 (with a 140 average). We'll be in an adult/youth pins over average tourney in June. 4 baker games. That should be fun. -
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 10:58 AM) Law of Averages isn't a real thing. It's a layman theory not based on reality. You're assuming every year the odds of a team winning the World Series are the same for every team and even then, that's not the law of averages. The law of averages is a fallacy like the gambler's wager where awful statistics are used to justify outcomes. Even if baseball were a 30 side coin, that does not mean the Cubs would win three in 100 years. Each side of the coin being equally represented is the single highest likely result, but is still unlikely. I would think that the chances of a team winning the WS in any given year are higher than the chances of single team not winning a single WS in 100+ years. Especially since they keep increasing the number of teams that make the playoffs. Yet they've somehow managed to continuously defy those odds.
-
QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 09:25 AM) We're the only ones delusional enough to believe that the jersey on their backs make it true. The fact is, when the media talks about "Can the Cubs win the World Series?" it's only to drum up interest but they know it's more likely now than it has ever really been. With the best baseball man in the business backed by a generous piggy bank, the Cubs look to be good for a long time. And I envy them immensely because we know what the White Sox are trying and even with 2005, this "lightning in a bottle" method of going about business is draining when it fails. By the law of averages the Cubs should have won a WS a long time ago. At the very least they should have made an appearance in one at some point after 1945. But somehow year after year they manage to screw it up in the most spectacular ways. In their last 7 postseason appearances, they have lost at least 3 games in a row to get eliminated. That's hard to do.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 26, 2016 -> 08:16 AM) One more rule I'd like to see: Relief pitchers must either face a minimum of two batters or finish an inning. That would help cut back on the number of commercial breaks for pitching changes. I don't like that idea. You are literally taking game strategy out of the manager's hands. Telling them how quickly to do an action is completely different than telling them they can/can't do a certain action.

What are these "ads" everyone is talking about?

It missed Rockford completely. Not a single flake fell yesterday.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 23, 2016 -> 01:06 PM) They're pretty awesome when it comes to discounts. They know anything they get you to pay is gravy. I keep re-upping for 6 month subscriptions for $24.99. I'll call and say I want to cancel, they'll offer me some deal like $99.99 for a year. I'm like, um, how about $25 for 6 months? "Let me look....yep, I can do that for you." When I cancelled I believe their final offer was 5 months for $20. I almost took the deal but hate the idea of going through the hassle of calling them every 6 months to get them to lower the price again.

HS age doesn't always match up anyway. I could have started my first year of college when I was 17. Since I graduated HS in June and my birthday isn't until October. I also know a few people that were still in HS until they were 20.

So I have a question. If some average Joe forgets his pin and tries multiple times to get into his phone and ends up locking himself out of it, how do they deal with that?

2015 - 2016 Bowling Season

Well bowling is pretty much going to take over my life for the next 2 months or so. Tryouts for my daughter's middle school bowling (7th & 8th grades) started last night. Three days of "tryouts" (there are no cuts, everyone makes the team. They just divide them up into varsity and JV.) and then starting on March 1 it will be practice on Tuesdays and matches on Thursdays. There will be a handful of tournaments mixed in as well. The state tournament is in April. This is on top of the traveling Saturday morning league she'll be starting in 2 weeks. Meanwhile I'm still bowling with her on Sunday nights in the adult/youth league and my normal Tuesday league still has a couple months to go. I'll have lots of updating to do in this thread. As for me, I finally broke 600 last night. First game I started with 5 strikes, then opened the 6th frame, 3 more strikes, then got a split in the 10th. Picked it up and got one more strike so I ended with a 243. Second game I lost my line and fell to 181. Third game I found again and ended somewhere around a 220 (I think). I know my series was in the 640 range. We won 3 games but somehow the second place team hasn't lost a game in 3 weeks. -
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 15, 2016 -> 10:41 AM) What about Costco? They pay pretty solid and have good benefits. There aren't any around us.

QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 15, 2016 -> 06:17 AM) Obviously they believe two part time employees is cheaper than one full time so don't worry about their decision on the night shift. I don't know about being cheaper or not but it's what they would be forced to do since they'd have 40 hours to fill. We figure that's one of the big reasons they won't move her. Employee turnover at the store is incredibly high. They'd have to find 2 people competent and trustworthy enough to work completely solo every night. She's almost too good at her job and they don't want to have to replace her unless they are forced to. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 15, 2016 -> 06:17 AM) It does seem legal. She would be moving to a new position, one with different benefits. She'd be moving to a different position with no benefits. She's accumulated enough time to now have 3 weeks of paid vacation. But if they bump her to part-time, she loses all that vacation time. QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 15, 2016 -> 06:17 AM) On the other hand a company that would treat a ten year employee that way sucks. Agreed.

QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 13, 2016 -> 04:02 PM) yeah i screw up her name, it was feather, it was heather.... dang it is a b**** getting old. IIRC, Heather is Chisoxfanatic on WSI and still posts there. Just look for posts about Canada, winter or hockey.

So my wife has been working as a retail cashier at a gas station for about 10 years now. For most of it she has been on 3rd shift with her core hours being 10P - 6A. We've made it work over the years and she's put up with it but recently she's become increasingly unhappy with her shift. She'd much rather work days like a "normal" person but they've always refused to move her. The only thing she likes is the fact that she gets 40 hours every week and weekends off. The problem is that since Obamacare came into affect, the store no longer hires full-time employees. She and one other girl are grandfathered in as full-time. The only other full-time positions are management. So if she switched to days, they would have to get 2 people to cover her current hours. The manager insists that she would have to go to part-time, lose her weekends off and all her vacation time. That not only seems wrong but something that shouldn't even be legal. You'd think having more seniority than every other person in the store besides the manager would mean something. I probably make enough to cover 99% of our bills. Her paycheck mostly covers our "fun" stuff like bowling and camping in the summer. Her plan is to be out in some way shape or form in the next 5 years, which is when our youngest will graduate HS. I'm not sure what options we have though. AFAIK, most retail places aren't hiring for full-time hours anymore.

Our precarious hold on first place is looking like it might be in trouble. There were 3 teams tied for 2nd a few weeks ago, but suddenly one team has pulled ahead and is currently only 4 games behind us and 3 games ahead of 3rd place. We only won one game this week. Every single game was close though. Within 20 pins or less. My first game I was doing fine. Not great, but I was over my average. Second game everything fell apart. I kept hitting the pocket but I was just leaving random single pins. The 9 pin, the 6 pin, the 8 pin... It was really odd. There was also 4 times where I nearly got a pocket 7-10 but then one of the pins would fall at the last second. Ended up somewhere around 165 or so. Walking around and listening to people, it seemed like almost everyone was complaining about the lanes and the pin action that night. Even one guy that has a 220 average couldn't find his line. I actually ended up switching to my old ball which is a 20 year old Zone. Surprisingly, it was hooking more than my brand new ball. -
2016 is the 25th anniversary of "New Comiskey Park" or USCF

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 10, 2016 -> 12:31 PM) #1 that trend is reversing, with more people leaving cable than ever before. People are leaving cable for things like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. They are still spending money to watch TV, just a different format. Getting to watch TV (especially MLB games) for "free" is just not an expectation most people have anymore. That was why Sportsvision failed. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 10, 2016 -> 12:31 PM) #2, the problem is with the networks themselves not being picked up by rival cable providers, not with people not subscribing to watch the Cubs/Dodgers/Astros etc. Fans literally don't get a choice. IF the Cubs do this, that could be a big reason they fail. BUT, if they are able to come to an agreement with the networks, there will be no shortage of people willing to pay to watch the games. There are already millions of people paying somebody to watch the team now.
