QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 10:49 AM) Seriously. Elba's "Luther" is a total Eastwood character anyway. I don't know what book you are talking about. But Elba excels in broken down, "ends justify the means" heros. Stephen King's Dark Tower Series. wiki link Here's one of the covers. That's the character Elba would be portraying.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 19, 2016 -> 10:45 AM) True, but IIRC HiA was written specifically as a companion story to the Dark Tower, whereas the other stories were visited by Roland throughout his travels I may be wrong, its been about 10 years since I read the dark tower series And in reference to Elba, i really dont care that Roland was written with Clint Eastwood in mind. It wouldnt bother me at all if Idris is cast as Roland I don't think it was specifically meant as a companion story. It just gave some background to a minor character that didn't even show up until the 7th DT book. You could read either one without reading the other and not really miss anything. King has always put in little hints to his other books or brought in characters from other stories. There are websites dedicated to pointing out all the connections between all of his books. As for Elba, I'm on the fence about it. He could probably pull the character off but the relationship between Roland and another character would have to be changed slightly.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 08:19 PM) And that's just strange, right? Why make a movie which is a small part of a larger story? To be fair, IT, Dreamcatcher, Desperation, Salem's Lot and The Stand are also connected. Or at least they exist in the same reality. They made those movies without the references to the larger story. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 08:19 PM) On a related note, Idris Elba has been cast as Roland Deschaine He's likely to be cast but nothing's been confirmed yet. It's sparked an interesting debate considering SK based the character off of Clint Eastwood. Idris Elba looks nothing like Clint Eastwood.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 01:36 PM) Wasn't Hearts in Atlantis a Dark Tower side story? It's connected, much like many of his other books. But they had to cut all those connections out of the movie because most of the audience wouldn't have a clue what they were referring to.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 18, 2016 -> 09:14 AM) I think a lot of that is because Kings writing style is very frequently from the mind of the main character. A lot of stories are told that way though and many transfer well to film. I was thinking more like the ending of IT. The people that see the ending of the movie always say IT was just a spider? But if you read the book you realize that ending was soo much bigger and more epic than that. IT wasn't *just* a spider. That was just the only physical representation the minds of the characters could come up with. That final confrontation didn't even take place in the physical world. It also connected to a much bigger universe. Hearts in Atlantis is another one that didn't translate all that well. It's one of my absolute favorite books of his, but they really chopped it up for the movie. The bad guys in that movie weren't supposed to be human. But with the way they are described, it would've been difficult to do on film.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 17, 2016 -> 09:33 AM) Stephen King movie adaptations are so weird. Some of them like the Green Mile, Shawshank, Misery are just awesome. Some of them like sleepwalkers, pet sematary, lawnmower man are just not good at all. That's because he pretty much ok's any adaption. Then it's up to the movie people to decide how closely they want to stick to the story in the book. For the most part, the ones that stick closer to the source material seem to be the better ones. The ones that go completely off the reservation (Lawnmower Man is a perfect example) usually turn out to be complete crap. Then there are the adaptions that just don't transfer well from written word to movie/tv screen.

QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Jan 17, 2016 -> 11:08 AM) I enjoyed the movie; haven't read the short story yet. That ending was some heavy stuff. The movie follows the book almost exactly, except for the ending. When King saw the ending, he said he wished he would've come up with it first.

QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 08:32 PM) Illinois club hockey fans do that, and once a season, the announcer actually says "You're welcome!" At Rockford Icehogs games the announcer always says "You're welcome!". -
Have we come to a consensus on Rey's parents yet? I know the big reason people say Luke can't be her father is that Jedi aren't supposed to have romantic relationships. But was Luke ever told that? That "rule" never even came up until Episode 2, long before he was born. I suppose Yoda or Obi Wan could have told him but they never really made a point of bringing it up in the original trilogy.

QUOTE (brett05 @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 08:00 AM) I don't recall discussing a book/short story with anyone, but now that I know it exists, I want to read it. I thought it was with you on the other board. Maybe not? Anyway, read the book if you can. It is soo much better than the movie IMHO. It's by Stephen King but he originally wrote it under his pseudonym "Richard Bachman". You can either find it as a stand alone book or in the collection called The Bachman Books (which also has another one of my favorite stories, The Long Walk). I'm not entirely sure if the book is still in print anymore as the ending mirrors a pretty horrific tragedy in American history. It gives a much better background on the main character and why hes forced to get involved in the games in the first place. The setup of the games is much better as well. The runners are basically free to go anywhere in the world instead of just being limited to a gameshow arena. There's also no sappy love story intertwined either. The ending is pretty dark but fits pretty well within the story. IIRC, we had/have a book thread in here somewhere.

Didn't they already confirm that Snoke is a brand new character that we haven't seen before?

2015 - 2016 Bowling Season

I joined and adult/youth league with my daughter that started last night. School bowling for her doesn't start until late February so this will help her get used to bowling more than just once a week. It also awards scholarship money so that's a nice benefit as well. We bowl two regular games and then two baker games, so we end up bowling a total of 3 games each. My two regular games were 221 and 180. Her two regular games were 146 and 131. Not bad but she's capable of doing better. First baker game was 186. Then the second baker game we both caught fire and shot a 236. Could've been a 237 but my last shot I left the 8 pin and it literally slid over 3 or 4 inches. It was the only non-strike I threw the whole game. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 02:33 PM) This has to be a joke debate. I've never seen such incoherent reasoning from one person. Love the book, hate the movie. What's hard to understand? Or were you referring the the Batman movie debate?

QUOTE (brett05 @ Jan 7, 2016 -> 01:07 PM) For me, the best Arnold movie is The Running Man I'm almost positive we've had this discussion before but I've never gotten over the fact that they completely destroyed that story compared to the Stephen King short story. I guess if they would've named it something else, I wouldn't dislike it so much because it might be a decent movie on it's own. But it's just not even close. The only thing the two have in common is the name.

Nobody mentioned the Santa Clause trilogy? I'd definite put them up there with A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation. Although the 2nd one was probably the weakest one of the 3.

2015 - 2016 Bowling Season

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 29, 2015 -> 03:24 PM) Went bowling for the first time in two years and rolled a 170 with marks all over the place and my ball having the movement it needs for high scores. Choked on some easy spares and missed some easy spares that I feel would come back to me quickly if I bowled more. This begs the question ... is bowling one of the easiest sports to perform well in? The 170 with pocket balls all over the place means if I bowled more, I would quickly average about 160 or better and roll my share of 200 plus games. Is bowling easy is my question?? Short answer: No. Longer answer: Like anything, the more you do it, the better you should get. Although I know people that have been bowling 30+ years and still don't get much more than a 150 average. Pretty much anyone can have one really good game. My wife averages in the 120's and shot a 192 the other day. But being consistently good like the pros and averaging 220 or 230 isn't what I would call easy. A lot of people compare bowling to golf. There are about 100 different ways to mess up your shot. Off balance, too fast, too slow, bad back-swing, bad approach, etc... Sometimes when you correct one thing, you do something else wrong. Then there are times when you throw a perfect shot and continuously leave corner pins. That's all not even mentioning different oil patterns. There's a reason a lot of guys carry 3 or 4 different balls with them. So sure, with a little practice you could probably be a decent bowler with an average in the 180s or 190s, but I wouldn't go trying to join the PBA anytime soon. Those guys make it look easy but like with any professional athlete, they've literally dedicated their lives to their craft. For the most part, even the best bowlers in a typical weeknight house league wouldn't stand a chance against them. -

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 23, 2015 -> 11:37 PM) Well, still no 300 game, but I ended game 2 with 6 and started game 3 with 6, so I did get 12 in a row. (My record is 16 in a row, but no 300 game) 185, 235, 225 That's pretty good. I think I've done something similar once or twice. The one 300 game I shot I had 18 in a row. I saw a guy once throw 12 in a row during our 10 minute warm-up time. He was/is a really good bowler. -
No spoilers for this guy.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 11, 2015 -> 02:20 AM) There is an option to turn it off...right in the game options. http://www.gottabemobile.com/2014/05/27/tu...ox-playstation/ I know about that but the game actually penalizes you for going that route. Turning off my internet connection before even starting the game doesn't. If/when I ever decide to start any of the online hacking stuff, I'd like to keep the little bit that I've earned.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 10, 2015 -> 09:18 AM) No dots on the approach. So sometimes I know I am a a little left or right of where I need to be, and as a result, when I hit my mark on the lanes, it has a different arc. usually not too much of a deal, but if we are on the lanes closer to the door, when it is cold out they dry out super fast, your lines get even tighter and there is no room for error. I've been to some pretty crappy houses but I've never seen an approach with no dots. That's unbelievable. I know how much of a difference it can make when I move my feet a board or two. I always use the dots to line up. Especially on spares. -

I'm not sure what you're describing. You only have the dots but not the arrows? Or you don't have the dots on the approach where you set your feet? -
I'm finally getting around to playing Watchdogs and I'm finding it quite annoying that other players can come in and interrupt my game while I'm playing. I've never been a big fan of the online play for open world games. I tried it a little bit on GTA5 and Red Dead Redemption but didn't really like it. But at least those games gave you the choice of when you did and didn't want to play with other players. There's so much other stuff to do and I get so little time to play that I simply don't have time to mess around with someone else. So I finally just shut off the internet connection. Problem solved.
