QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) (This isn't actually why they're losing money. They're losing money because Congress passed a law a few years ago requiring them to pre-fund their pension plan out to 75 years by 2016, something that I'm pretty sure no one has to do anywhere. Without that enormous pension pre-funding, the USPS would actually be operating at a profit right now, despite being required to maintain saturday delivery and maintaining unprofitable post offices throughout the country in rural areas). The first time I read this I couldn't believe it was true. They are literally funding pensions for future employees that haven't even been born yet.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 01:31 PM) The stock answer would be that being homosexual is not a sin, but engaging in homosexual acts is. That's exactly what somebody else told me a few days ago. I don't see how you separate the two things. Isn't the very definition of being a homosexual engaging in homosexual acts? Can you really consider yourself to be a homosexual if you only engage in heterosexual acts?

QUOTE (God Loves The Infantry @ Feb 6, 2013 -> 08:08 AM) Homosexuality is forgiveable How is being something God made you a sin and how is one forgiven for it considering it’s not something one can change?

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Jan 15, 2013 -> 12:38 PM) We should be getting a couple thousand back. Although we did add another dependent this year so it might be more. We'll be putting it towards getting gutters on the house and remodeling our bathroom. Apparently this isn't true. We have a 16-year-old who's mother signed over temporary custody to us last June. So we have legal guardianship, she's under 17 and we've had her for over 6 months. But because she wasn't placed with us through an adoption agency, we aren't allowed to claim her as a dependent.

QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Jan 30, 2013 -> 08:05 PM) I'm usually not too impressed with his endings on the long stuff. Hope this is different. I'm the same way. I was pretty satisfied with this one though.

I'll probably be putting my pop-up up on craigslist again this year since we didn't have any buyers for it last year. It'll be nice to get a little extra money and get it out of the driveway. Opening weekend isn't until April 12 for our campground but we are counting down the days until we can get back out there and open our trailer up for the summer.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 24, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) Overall, as a parent, I've found just about everything I've learned in school to be useful as I spend time every night helping my kids with their homework. I'm just the opposite. I try to help my kids with their homework and sometimes I can't because it's stuff I haven't even thought about much less used in 20 years. The math stuff they come home with I can usually figure out if I look at it but I usually don't know any real-world applications for it. The English homework I'm just lost on. Subject verbs vs. objective verbs... Compound subjects... prepositional phrases... I did learn keyboarding in HS so that's good but probably 80% of the rest of it has been pretty useless so far. Especially my electives. Marketing, Spanish, electronics, programming (on Apple computers). I've forgotten most of it.

I got curious so I did some research. Since Wrigley was built, the Cubs have played in the World Series 6 times, but in 1918 they played in Comiskey. So in 5 World Series, the Cubs have only won 2 games as the home team. One in 1935 and one in 1945.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 21, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) I made it to "Companies that want better workers need to pay more". That's just not how it works, at every job I've ever had you start out with a relatively low wage then prove yourself to be worth a higher wage. When you see a job for $11/hour dont look at that, think about how you can make it $16/hour within a couple years. I had that same train of thought at my first job. But some companies start you out low and then give really low raises so you never really get anywhere. When I first got hired I was making a relatively low salary of $26,000. Being only 20 years old and not even out of college, that was a lot of money to me. Divide it out and it's $12.50/hour When I got let go 11 years later I was making around $33,000. That's only $15.86/hour. So my pay increased a little over $3/hour over 11 years.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 17, 2013 -> 10:03 AM) This could be part of the program . One day a wek as work starts there is an information session on these types of things. Even in the current system. Maybe they should make it mandatory to go to an information session on this type of thing. When I was unemployed I was required to go to some sort of training seminar one time. Most of it focused on how to use the IDES website for job searching but it was fairly worthless. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 10, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) Cook the beef until fully browned. Once that happens, get a strainer and put the beef in there with a bowl underneath. The fat drips through the strainer into the bowl. You can even take a spatchela and smash the beef down to squeeze out more fat. It ends up way less greasy. That's what I've always done. I just assumed everyone else did the same thing.

I wonder if part of it is because medical costs are so expensive. I went without insurance for many years simply because I couldn't afford it.

I've read that sociopath and psychopath are pretty interchangeable terms.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 01:37 PM) Taxes and other deductions are based on when you are paid, not when you worked. As for the $45, it depends on how much of that was Federal income tax withholding and how much was FICA. The FICA went up Jan. 1 and the newly passed law did not take that rate back down. The law did take the Federal income tax rate back down (assuming you make less than $400K) so if that withholding amount went up it should go back down within the next check or two, but the extra amount you already paid won't come back to you until you file your 2013 return. I figured as much. Thanks.

I guess I'll ask this question here. Are taxes on salary based on when the hours were worked or when the check was written? I get paid every two weeks. My pay period ended 12/28. So all my hours worked were between 12/17/12 and 12/28/12. My employer cut the check on 1/2/13 and the taxes taken out were based on the 2013 rates rather than the 2012 rates. So I ended up getting about $45 more taken out in taxes. Also since they passed the new law, should I be getting that $45 back or will I just have to wait until my refund next April?

I had my usual NYE celebration. Wife was at work, I was playing my PS3 in the living room and the kids were playing on the computer. I paused my game long enough to watch the ball drop, texted my wife and then went back to playing my game. I have the same plans for next year.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 5, 2012 -> 10:01 AM) Anyways, SOA finale was awesome. Indeed it was. I was dead on with a couple of my predictions. The final scene was a bit surprising. Gemma can be a real conniving b****. Kurt Sutter is one messed up dude with regards to his character (Otto). Can't wait until next season now.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 11:57 AM) AT&T's internet is total garbage unless you happen to live very close to a central office. Even then, they can't come close to competing with Comcast in terms of speed. I have the cheapest Comcast internet package I could get, and it's like 20mbit down, 5mbit up. Not theoretical, but actual speeds sustained. And I find those speeds to be mediocre. We don't have the lowest tier for their speeds but I don't remember what the exact numbers are. It works for us though because we don't do anything that requires really high speeds. Facebook games, youtube videos and maybe Pandora are about it.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 10:33 AM) Allow me to apply to golden rule when it comes to any technology when the name AT&T is somehow attached... If you can avoid using AT&T, avoid using AT&T. This rule *always* applies for everything and anything they offer. In the end, you will NOT save money, you will NOT have better service, and you will NOT have a better experience than you could have elsewhere. I've had them for my phone & internet for about 10 years now with no problems. Although we could probably drop our landline phone since we hardly ever use it.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Dec 3, 2012 -> 04:23 PM) Like I've said a few times it's a small location (seating for 18). Though I would love to be in the position to worry about serving 50-70 people at a time thats probably never going to happen. 18 sounds small but I don't think that's much smaller than the dining room of an average fast-food joint. I don't know how the place is set up but I'm imagining a counter where you order and pay for the food and then a handful of tables in the dining area. If you do any kind of decent business at all, even getting half that amount of people just standing in line at the counter could be over-whelming for just one person depending on how large your menu is.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 1, 2012 -> 10:05 AM) I was actually looking into swtiching to U-Verse last night, but for some reason the TV service is still not available in my neighborhood. WTF, it's not like I live in the boondocks. Same with me, although phone and internet are available. I'm pretty sure one of our neighbors a few blocks away has Uverse, so I don't understand it.
