  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 11:16 AM) Except where your team finishes has almost always been a factor in the discussion. It is a huge deal when the person isn't on a first place team. The Tigers wouldn't be a first place team in any other division.
  2. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 10:19 AM) The point wasn't to advocate that everyone pay for their own health care, as SS tried to imply. The point was to highlight that doctors/hospitals, with the enabler that the insurance companies have become, are jacking up costs an amount that can only be considered "insane". I understand having a profit margin...but selling a drug for 600$ that you paid 1.50$ for is just astounding. Along these same lines, I worked at an Osco one time. As an employee discount we were allowed to buy things at cost + 10%. One of the first things that was pointed out to me was that I could buy a bottle of asprin for about 47 cents. I don't remember the retail price but I'm sure it was at least 2 or 3 dollars.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 07:57 AM) Like it or not, propelling your team to the playoffs has always been a key component of the MVP award. It is not the best offensive player, or the highest WAR award. The unmeasurables have always been a large part of the award. To me MVP = best player no matter what team they are on or how they finished in the standings. If Trout was on a last place team and put up the same numbers he would still be the best player in the league.
  4. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 11:10 AM) I recommended that in here quite a few months ago. I adored that book. That's how I found it. I went through this thread and wrote down some titles that sounded interesting.
  5. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 01:00 PM) A lot of anti Tiger bias here. Triple Crown winner, played in every game but one, I give it to Cabrera because of the Triple Crown. That is so tough to do these days. Triple crown = best hitter. The award is for the most valuable player.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 08:26 AM) Ozzie had a whole lot to do with that roster failing. This doesn't help him at all. You might as well be talking to a brick wall.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 06:11 PM) winning the World Series for the 3rd time in 2006 years That's a long time.
  8. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 03:59 PM) Nice episode but the storylines are getting tough to follow without a scorecard. Indeed. It's hard to remember who knows what about who and who is on which side. Its interesting to see how the show has gone from SAMCRO vs. some outside force in the first few seasons to the internal struggles of the MC itself.
  9. Just finished "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. As a child of the 80's and a slight geek, this was right in my wheelhouse. There were a couple of references that I didn't quite get because I hadn't played the game or watched the movie but I enjoyed it overall.
  10. Sons of Anarchy is a 90 minute episode tonight.
  11. I've been with US Cellular since I got my very first phone and they were known as Cellular One. Tried switching to Verizon once, but that only lasted a couple of weeks and I switched back. Never really had any big problems with them. I've fulfilled my latest contract and am just going month-to-month now. I was just thinking about getting a new phone soon but I wonder if this is the time to switch to a new carrier. I've noticed that all the other companies advertise the fastest speeds or the best coverage while US Cellular advertises a rewards program.
  12. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 04:16 PM) A few years back, when the IL governors' race was between Blago and Judy Baar Topinka, I wrote in Abraham Lincoln. Those were less attractive options than the main event today, but not by too much. For all the bad that Blago did, I'll give him credit for the open road tolls (which I use every day to and from work) and Allkids (which I used for my kid's insurance for many years).
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) I was more putting it in there for the pages about Adam Dunn. Ortiz is about as solid of a comp for Dunn as you can get. Dunn is younger and might hit a few more HRs but Ortiz > Dunn in pretty much every possible way offensively.
  14. Given the choice between staying and dying or leaving and maybe having to replace a few material possessions, they pick the former. I don't get it.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) While to a certain extent I agree, there may be a lot of factors in individual cases we may not know about. What if the person or family doesn't have much money to begin with and nowhere to go? What if they have no family or friends elsewhere to stay with? What if they don't speak good English and didn't realize they were told to evacuate? What if they don't own a car in order to drive away? It may not be as easy as "Why didn't they just leave?" I realize there are extenuating circumstances for each case, but one of the stories the woman was leaving the house in her car when the car got stuck in flood waters and her kids got swept away. So she obviously had a way to get out and had someplace in mind to go. She just made the decision to leave much too late.
  16. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) Lilly's a good guy for throwing away that easy ground ball, but I think it's time for a new utility man. He's a flop. You know he got traded to the Red Sox in June right?
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 01:38 PM) I think the Sox would be doing handstands in joy if somebody would take Dunn and his contract off the Sox hands. Do you all at least agree on that? No.
  18. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 12:07 PM) Its kind of hard to blame Konerko and Rios since each had a higher OBP and SLG pct. than Adam. Then who should we blame for Adam Dunn not scoring a run after he walks? I would think it's those 2 that had the most PA's with Adam standing on first.
  19. I've read at least 2 stories of people dieing when they were trying to leave their house or get to higher ground after it started flooding. One hand, it's horrible to hear stories like this but on the other hand, why didn't these people listen when they were told to evactuate a week prior?
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 11:28 AM) Really? If Konerko is directly behind him, for Dunn to score he has to homer or hit a long double (I'm taking triple out of the equation). Shouldn't it shake down the line up? What's funny is if Dunn got back to his 2009 level in 2013, he legitimately could be a candidate for comeback player of the year 2 years in a row. Yes, a little bit, but the guy batting behind him is the only one guaranteed to have some effect on his scoring via a walk. Especially if he makes the third out or GIDP. It's his job, if nothing else, to move him up a base or 2. If that guy isn't doing his job, it makes it that much more difficult for anyone batting further back to do it.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 10:50 AM) Blame Konerko for Adam Dunn. Wow. Rios was behind Dunn as well. Might as well blame him too. Konerko didn't seem to be a minor league hitter when he had Dunn behind him in 2011. If your argument is that his walks haven't translated to runs that's exactly who you should be blaming.
  22. Really, the most fun was had after-hours at the bar hanging out with fellow sox fans and chatting with the players when they came down. From what I've heard, that doesn't happen much anymore. The town meetings with Sox brass was always interesting as well. Getting the actual autographs was probably 3rd on my list. Although I managed to get a picture with Hawk and DJ one year where they actually game out from behind the table and stood on either side of me. Their line was always much, much shorter. I've also got a couple of blackmail pics of a friend of mine with Frank Thomas and Aaron Rowand. He's a Cubs fan.

    Halloween

QUOTE (Joxer_Daly @ Nov 1, 2012 -> 03:24 PM) No costume pictures, but I heard today of someone that covered onions in chocolate and gave them to callers.
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 1, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) I disagree. The Tigers were on life support 3 different times where the team could beat nobody that didn't wear a White Sox uniform. Sox had chances to put that team away and never could do it. Do you remember the LONG STRETCH where Detroit could beat nobody but the Sox? There was a stretch between 8/28 and 9/12 where the Tigers went 6 - 9 with 5 of those wins coming against the Sox. The problem is that they went 13 - 7 after that when the Sox couldn't buy a win. So they went through a bad patch but over 162 games, they were the better team.
  25. Actually putting Ozzie with the Royals might benefit the Sox. It almost looks like they are getting their act together down there. Hiring Ozzie should knock them back a couple of years.
