2012 Cuban signees thread Cespedes/Soler/Concepcion

With a Concepcion signing, a decent return if Gavin is traded, and the 13th pick in June I could start to feel a bit better about the farm. Hopefully it's ready to churn out some MLB players or trade chips in the next few seasons. I'd like to see some young cost controlled talent to join players like Sale, Dayan, and Reed around the time Dunn and Rios are gone. -

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 11:43 PM) Cespedes- Cubs Soler - Red Sox Concepcion - White Sox I'm okay with that. The White Sox need anything they can get that resembles depth, both pitching and position players. I'm sure KG isn't as high on Concepcion as others due to him being a polished "pitchability" guy. Kevin loves his tools and upside. That's his M.O., and that's fine. Even if Concepcion's ceiling is that of a 3 or 4, it's still better than the majority of the pitching in the system currently. Sign him. -

Kevin_Goldstein Kevin Goldstein Doing all the Yoenis work in the last 48 hours, I talked to a lot of people about Gerardo Concepion. 8 minutes ago Kevin_Goldstein Kevin Goldstein General thought on Concepcion is the same. Highly polished for his age w/ advanced control and secondaries, but not blow away stuff. 8 minutes ago Favorite Retweet Reply Kevin_Goldstein Kevin Goldstein Many teams in on Concepcion; don't have great feel for the market. Not Top 100 guy. 6 minutes ago Favorite Retweet Reply Kevin_Goldstein Kevin Goldstein Could move quickly for a teenager, but STILL A TEENAGER. RT @jklein78: @Kevin_Goldstein what's the range of timeline for Concepcion? 4 minutes ago Favorite Retweet Reply -
Pretty damn excited for baseball. No matter the team. I'll be attending many more Sox games when I move to the city next month.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 31, 2012 -> 10:03 AM) How in God's name can the Tigers afford Cespedes as well after signing Fielder? Is Little Caesar's Pizza taking off in profitability in the last 2-3 years? Ilitch is old and wants to win. He spends more of his own money than any other owner. They haven't made a profit in like ten years supposedly. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 28, 2012 -> 08:24 AM) I'd still be willing to bet that Cherington would rather just give Edwin the deal he wants, than give Kenny a package of prospects. That's the thing, they can't give Edwin the deal he wants it seems. It would push them over the luxury tax threshold.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 28, 2012 -> 12:49 AM) Getting Soler and Concepcion would give us another B+ prospect and an A+ prospect. I say do it. Concepcion doesn't seem to be nearly that touted from what I can tell. Soler on the other hand could be very good. A+ is a huge stretch though. For reference, Sickels has Bryce Harper as a straight "A."

QUOTE (pktmotion @ Jan 28, 2012 -> 12:07 AM) If indeed Oswalt heads to St. Louis and the Red Sox start getting anxious to trade for Gavin. What are the realistic expectations? Do the Red Sox have decent enough prospects? are they overhyped? If we're working on a position of leverage, I'd like KW to pull a fast one on a rookie gm. The Red Sox are starting to get desperate. It's hard to put realistic expectations on a trade return. We don't know how each team values certain players or prospects. Kenny also works his own way and it's hard to predict what he will do. You know he loves his reclamation Coop can fix 'em players. If I had to guess I'd say a fair return would be two "B" prospects, or a higher end "B" prospect and some "C+" pieces along with it. Kenny might have more leverage here than normal with the Red Sox kind of f***ed by the luxury tax threshold. Some players to consider would be Anthony Ranaudo, Brandon Workman, Brandon Jacobs, and Bryce Brentz. I doubt the Red Sox would move Middlebrooks, Lavarnway, or Bogaerts. Some lesser pieces could be Felix Doubront, Stolmy Pimentel, Drake Britton, and Christian Vasquez.

JonHeymanCBS Jon Heyman via @Jim_Duquette, cards most likely but rangers, red sox, astros (yes, astros) in mix for oswalt. seems to prefer south 1 minute ago

QUOTE (daggins @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 09:28 PM) That hasn't happened yet btw. Yep. If the Cards are indeed in the mix, I think it'll be official soon though. It sounds like Texas and St Louis are his preferences.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 08:57 PM) Oswalt signed with the Cards. Sox could be trading Floyd soon Nice.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 06:55 PM) Have the Sox acquired a major league player this offseason? Nope. And if it holds true, the White Sox will be the only team in MLB to not sign a major league free agent this offseason. -

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 05:45 PM) I guess that means no Cubans players are coming to the Sox. DAMN!! MDGonzales Mark Gonzales KW says he's maxed out on $ for roster but played coy on Cuban free agents 6 minutes ago Favorite Retweet Reply Probably Concepcion. I'd love Soler too. -

I'd like to get more opinions and scouting reports on Concepcion. All I've read so far is KG's projection as a 4/5 starter. Polished, pitchability, etc, but not the best stuff.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 26, 2012 -> 04:23 PM) According to this ESPN Deportes (spanish) report Concepcion is close to signing. Not the highest profile guy, but lord knows the Sox need depth. Hope they get him.
-
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jan 26, 2012 -> 03:00 PM) Also, no one thought Royse was promising. Most people blasted the pick when it was made. The injury only amplified that concern. I actually had forgotten about Royse. I recall some opinions that he had the ceiling of a number 4 starter. I was actually kind of optimistic about him until the injury.

Rios, as he continues to be awful and not give a s*** about it.

QUOTE (Baron @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 09:41 PM) Itll get done eventually. I still hope Toronto is in the mix. As far as Boston, I'd be very okay with a Ranaudo + Workman package. Jacobs + Workman would work too.

While most current reports have Boston now most interested in Edwin Jackson, and Oswalt not fully committed to Boston, it sounds like the Red Sox are still considering Gavin. http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7...ngthen-rotation

MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has his Top 100 Prospect List out. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/ White Sox have 1 prospect on it. Coming in at the last spot, #100, Addison Reed.
