DirtySox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Knobler tweeted earlier that there are executives that aren't convinced the Tigers are out on Cespedes. Mystery team to strike again? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 12:47 PM) DKnobler DKnobler On Cespedes: People in baseball wondering if Prince signing takes Tigers out of it. Not sure yet if that's true DKnobler DKnobler Also on Cespedes: He has told teams he would prefer not to play in Miami. If so, he has interesting decision if Marlins still bid big. The Tigers getting Cespedes would be pretty crazy. I still think Garza would be a great fit for them. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) Anyone care to explain what exactly he has done that makes him a tool? Not sarcastic, I'd like to know. Via Wikipedia.

Dude sounds like a tool. I had no idea his reputation. I suppose he could be a warm body/rotation filler if Floyd is dealt though. And yes, he went to Crystal Lake South.

Another White Sox / Blue Jays trade on the horizon?

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) uh...doesn't 'start the rumors' indicate it's just a joke? no need to overreact on the ones that aren't as horrifying. Why does it indicate it's a joke? Cowley uses dumb hashtags all the time. -

Over The Monster notes that the Red Sox have a full 40 man, so any possible Gavin or Beckham deal might involve player or two from the list of Felix Doubront, Stolmy Pimentel, Drake Britton, Lars Anderson, or Michael Bowden. Most of these players have little value obviously, so one would hope they aren't trade centerpieces. They certainly could be throw-ins though. -

Fielder to Detroit 9 years $214million

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:40 PM) The WORST thing KW could do is try and counter the Tigers right now with anything other than improving the system with high ceiling, cost-controlled talent. I'm praying that this is Kenny's plan right now. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 08:50 PM) I don't see how that deal gets done honestly. No idea. I would have no clue on how to value Gordon Beckham at this point, or what would be fair to ask for. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:31 PM) Trading Gordon Beckham is nuts. I wouldn't do it unless blown away. His trade value surely isn't very high right now. -

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 04:20 PM) They'll experiment with it. If he's horrendous, and he probably will be, they're not going to leave him there. As far as the deal overall? s***, this division is spoken for through at least 2014. I don't care what anybody says. We know what the Sox are. The Twins might actually be in worse shape than the Sox. The Royals still have no SP. The Indians are probably the one team you could make a non-silly sounding case for (i.e. Ubaldo reverting back to first-half 2010 form). We all know that they'll regret this when Prince is 31, 32, 33. But right now he's 27 and in his prime. I cannot ever remember a time where you had this many potential powerhouses in the AL at one time. The days of NY/Boston and everybody else are long over with. I'm not fully sold on the Indians in the near future. I think Tigers are the clear favorites the next few years with KC jumping into contention if Montgomery/Lamb/Odorizzi make the jump or they add some legitimate starting pitching like the Nats and Reds did with Gio and Latos trades. -

Phil Rogers sucks, but he's reiterating a Rosenthal rumor that the Red Sox are interested in Gordon Beckham for their SS vacancy. This in addition to Floyd for the rotation. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 02:39 PM) And if there aren't good offers on the table, this deal doesn't suddenly mean we should accept bad offers. I didn't say we should. But if Kenny had delusions of competing this year, they just realistically took a hit. If he was waffling on a potential fair deal or not, I hope he's considering pulling the trigger. -

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 02:38 PM) I'd imagine they're going to have to eat a bit of that contract to move him... They are considering Miggy to 3B, or either of them in a corner OF spot as well. Will it work out? Who knows. They have time to worry about it certainly. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 02:36 PM) Because there's plenty of flipping out, "Trade Thornton and Floyd, bring out the tarp, cover the field, I can't watch this any more, it's over. Turn out the lights, bring in the bulldozers and let's turn this place into a parking lot" already. Many of us thought those players should be traded even before this addition. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 02:29 PM) Now let's also note though...he's been somewhat inconsistent in his career, bouncing between 6.4 WAR and 3.4 WAR over the last 3 years. Furthermore, he's also moving to a much worse ballpark for hitting, which has been known to affect big bats in different ways. And if Miguel Cabrera winds up spending time at 3b or DH, then Miguel Cabrera's WAR is going to go down because of position adjustments and deplorable defense. Sure there are what ifs, but there are with every signing. I'm not proclaiming the Tigers to win the 2012 World Series, but let's not pretend this isn't a significant pick-up. I think you are downplaying his addition a bit. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 02:19 PM) Just at the same position, I'll go: Albert Votto Cabrera And if he's healthy, Adrian Gonzalez. Over the last 4 years, Teixeira has put up similar WAR to Prince, while I'm at it. Prince is still quite a solid pickup in the short term. A 5 fWAR player will offset the loss of Victor and then some. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 02:11 PM) They're going to have something like $80 million tied up in 4 players through the end of 2014. Read that number again and think about that. The rest of their roster will have to earn less than the Marlins for that team to not lose a ton of money. And 3 of them effectively play 2 positions. Aren't they already losing a ton of money? Isn't that Illitch's thing? He doesn't care and just wants to win. -
