  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 1, 2011 -> 03:54 PM) The issue is that yeah, Sale should have more than that in him and he's already made the big leagues, so he's gotten the first step or two accomplished. Starting from that point, only winding up with a reliever would be a disappointment. Starting from the draft itself, winding up with a dominating reliever is a solid result. Well put. I only have issue if he isn't given the opportunity to maximize his value as a starting pitcher.
  2. Steve Stone on CTL noted that Francona isn't likely to be hired by the Sox.
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 05:51 PM) "We met this morning to look back on the 2011 season and to consider the future of the Boston Red Sox, including my involvement with the club," Francona said in a statement released by the club. "I passed along my frustrations at my inability to effectively reach the players. After many conversations and much consideration, I ultimately felt that, out of respect to this team, it was time for me to move on." He admits he can't reach the players. The Sox have a couple of very pricey veterans who need to be "reached". You can cross Francona off the list. If the Sox are interested in changing the organizational culture, Francona doesn't sound like the right fit.
  4. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 04:25 PM) The Sox are gonna be as aggressive as hell in the next few weeks building a new culture within the team ASAP. This includes Manager and staff and then player moves when possible. Will this new culture involve spending some money on the god-damn draft?
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 12:35 PM) If that is the case then you want the Sox to go as cheap as possible as the odds are good this manager will be gone by the time they win again anyway. Indeed. I just don't see a good fit right now. Maybe it's just me, but I think almost everything will have to go right for the Sox to be in contention next season.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 12:13 PM) I see the Sox as being much closer than the Cubs, because all we need is guys to play like they have done in the recent past to have a big resurgence. I don't know if I am a big Francona fan or not. With the impending payroll paring and potential rebuild, I'm not even close to optimistic. I'm not counting on Rios or Dunn returning to form either.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 11:17 AM) You don't hire Francona unless you have a team that can win in the next year or two, which the Cubs clearly do not. I agree with this, which is why I'm not sure why so many White Sox fans are clamoring for him to be signed. I don't see the right fit unless Jerry is going "All In" again.
  8. Anyone but the Yankees or Phillies.
  9. Moore starting game 1 is fantastic. Kudos to Maddon. I'm stoked.
  10. Just aced my job interview, Sox get the 13th pick, and now I'm going drinking. Today is a good day.
  11. If the Sox go ahead and win, they drop to the 15th pick, with the possibility of falling to 17th depending on if Cleveland and Washington win or lose later today. I might be wrong though. Someone double check my work.
  12. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 01:18 PM) A loss today locks up the 13th pick for the Sox, I believe. Yep.
  13. That's unfortunate. He's just awful. 4 more years of MLB Gameday Audio I suppose.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 11:05 AM) Yeah, I am going to say I know the Sox aren't signing a Type A OF or RP. I would agree fully. I'm indifferent to the pick protection aspect this year. I'd just much rather have the 13th pick versus the 17th.
  15. QUOTE (oldsox @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 10:02 AM) Could be dicey if we win Wed (which means Toronto loses) and Cleveland loses. Then it depends on tiebreakers, but if we fall out of the bottom 15, Kenny figures to give away the pick. We want the Reds and Nats to win as well.
  16. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 28, 2011 -> 10:25 AM) Agreed on not thinking KW is the best for that job, but it is what it is. They don't have to go into full rebuild to be successful in a few years, but they will have to build up the scouting department and development in the minors, especially when it comes to position prospects. We need to be able to develop consistent hitters from our system, while our pitching has actually been pretty good (though our SP prospects are dreadful currently). A few big investments in upgrading those areas and spending in the draft with some key trades here and there and the Sox could be a force again in a few years. They have enough talent to trade and build upon that they should be able to cut down the rebuild time significantly. Agreed about where money needs to be spent. But the White Sox obviously cannot continue to be dead last in bonus spending if they want to successfully rebuild in a timely manner. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/...itures-2007-11/ ^^^ That simply will not do, especially during a rebuild of sorts. It's almost embarassing consdering the resources available to the organization. Hopefully Kenny has or will have a nice talk and persuasive presentation for Jerry on the returns from investing in amateur talent.
