Phillies willing to send most of $70 million contract to deal How
oldsox replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) I see a lot of hating on Dunn, but little about the actual deal. People simply say it made sense at the time. Do you deny this? I'd say a majority of the posts on Danks mention getting "rid of him now" and disdain about the money he makes and wanting to free it up. I don't mind Danks at all. I think he's had a fine season. He's the least of the Sox problems. Sale, Danks and Q are a great 3/5s of a rotation I think. After the performance last night you wonder why Sox aren't winning more with 4/5s of it sometimes doing well. Greg, I hated the Dunn acquisition from day 1, and I said so to whomever would listen. I had seen him play in the NL and just don't like that kind of player. Then, you have to consider the deal long term (4 yrs) and expensive ($60 large approx), and we lost a #1 draft choice. It was lose/lose. His terrible years in early part of his era did not surprise me. Actually, he is hitting better now than I would have guessed or predicted. I'll be glad to see him gone, but do not hate him personally. Far from it. Another poster said recently that the crowd really gets on him in a tasteless fashion; I hate to see that. -
Cody Winiarski has been doing a Mitchell Boggs impersonation.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2014 -> 04:55 AM) 7 games ago Wilkins with his "sweet swing" was an almost 26 year old hitting .251 with a below .300 OBP in AAA. While this streak he has been on is incredible, he has been pretty mediocre outside of these last 7 games. That's one way to look at Wilkins. Another is that for some reason, he got off to a horrible start this seaso, turning it on sometime in May. So from then on, his numbers are great. I don't know what caused the poor start -- injury perhaps? Don't know.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 09:10 PM) Hahn said that the plan at closer was gonna be Nate Jones. In his eyes they had a closer on the team, he just so happened to have gotten hurt before the season started. Calling the trade laughably bad is silly. Hindsight it hasn't worked yet, esp with Gillaspie hitting the way he has, but Hahn apparently had more faith in Jones than Conor. When Greg said that the trade was "laughably bad" it was probably an exaggeration, certainly an inaccurate adverb. No one here is laughing. But it was not a good trade. It'll likely take another year before the trade can be accurately assessed, but I'm sure Hahn did not forsee Davidson hitting .210 in AAA with gobs of strikeouts. Reed now up to 24 saves by the way, which is a fairly predictable level for him.

Just saw that the Pirates called up Brent Morel from AAA where he was hitting .243 with 3 HR's.

Charlotte Knights lead all baseball in HR's

and Wilkins isn't on anybody's top prospect list...... -
Question for Mr. Wite: IYO, who is the better prospect today, Davidson or Wilkins?

I think you guys are overanalyzing.

Was that base hit an example of Beckham's limited range?
-
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 08:15 PM) If they can't deal Beckham, can they send him down to build up his confidence (haha) and put Micah in the lineup. Beckham has 5+ years service time. Can't remember what the limit is before you cannot send a player down to minors. Something like 4-5 yrs I believe. I bet someone here knows the answer.

For years I have wondered if The US had normal relations with Cuba, if there would have been a major league franchise in Havanna.

Why would anyone want to leave an obvious playoff team? And then going public with it.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:39 AM) Dunn's hitting plenty of HRs. He has hit one every 19.5 ABs this year. 19th best in all of baseball. Right on par with Pujols and Bautista. The reason his power numbers look so low is because he's lost 100+ PAs to our mascot. Add another 5-6 HRs and 15 RBIs and his numbers look a whole lot better. Had to laugh. Is this an old nickname, or original material from yourself?

What was Engel's injury earlier this year?

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 11:28 PM) Ravelo deserves a month in Charlotte. Dump Dunn and call up Wilkins to make room. Agreed. Hawk was touting Wilkins during the Sox game Monday night. Too bad Wilkins got off to such a slow start; then, his stats would really be impressive. Wilkins should be on everyone's prospect list. Almost everyone.

7/21 KC Royals @ Chicago White Sox

Even Hawk was giving some love to AAA farmhand Andy Wilkins. No one else does, even the Top 20 prospect list on the team web site. He is not on it, but a bunch of non-performers are. Wilkins is hitting the cover off the ball, leading the league in HR's, and not a mention. Same on FutureSox in all those top 10/20 lists. Not that I criticizing FutureSox, because I really like it. Kudos to Hawk. -
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) Matt Davidson- how he has overcome his struggles from the beginning of the season and through the thumb injury. JB Wendelken- hows the adjustment coming to a new organization and how he has adjusted through the year. Not to be negative, but what has he overcome?
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 07:46 PM) 1.335 OPS in July. Even Cooperstown Kris would take that. Davidson K's are spiking again. I think we're looking at a guy with a poor-man's-Mark Reynolds-ceiling, but more likely Mike Olt. Contact issues are major. Would love to be wrong. You're not.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 05:51 PM) Who's he better than right now? Maybe Taylor Thompson but we just don't know that yet. If Sergio had spent the season in Charlotte, I don't think his record would be as good as Thompson's. Of that, I am 99.9999% certain. By the way, who mgave that contract to Sergio, Kenny or Toronto?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 02:49 PM) That would be the point. The White Sox would only pick up salary if it offered them a solid return in prospects. Right now, if I were Oakland or Seattle and Dunn was put on waivers I'd grab him to fortify my lineup/bench at a reasonable cost given the time remaining. The Sox ought to be able to save some money on him at least. I wonder how many times Sox have put Dunn on waivers....
-
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 12:10 AM) He has a sub .300 OBP in the minors. That is horrendous strike zone recognition. I had hoped we left that preference for low OBP ball when Ozzie left town. Not quite true. He also got off to a terrible start in April-May. He keeps improving, even his OBP. If he has a good final 6 wks in AAA, why not move him up? If Sox don't protect him in off-season, he will be gone.

I'd take any of those three guys from Colorado outfield. I watch the Rockies a lot. Not sure how much pitching they would want for Cargo, but the thought of him in White Sox uni makes me salivate. He'll get it together for someone.
-
QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) They'd probably rather give us CarGo. Can't tell if you are kidding or not, Andy. One of those guys will be available in off season, especially if they re-sign Cuddyer. Cargo is still struggling, going 0 for 5 last night, all strikeouts.

Back to Kemp. Hitless in first game after All Star break; not playing in second game. The Dodgers situation is almost comical with Kemp, Crawford and Ethier all struggling and all with enormous contracts. A tribute to GeneralManagerhood.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 19, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) How'd the system get so s***ty? Even in 2007 it wasn't so bad, but I guess trades and poor drafting added to it and the Latin American scandal Poorly drafted: Broadway, McCullouch, Lumsden Traded Away: Richard, Poreda, Hudson, Gio Kenny W. Ravelo should be #3. Geez, He's hitting .320 in AA and he's 22.
