  1. QUOTE (scs787 @ May 27, 2014 -> 12:07 PM) Using ERA to appeal to the back of the baseball card guys, and FIP to appeal to the saber guys.....(I know neither are the end all measuring stick but you get the point). Addison Reed-4.18 ERA/4.62 FIP Daniel Webb- 2.39/4.19 Jake Petricka- 1.57/4.06 Zach Putnam- 1.64/3.14 Then there's Lindstrom who sabermetrically is only slightly worse than Reed @ 3.32/4.68. Saying Reed would be the 4th or 5th best reliever is not that crazy to say. In your analysis, give Reed a little credit for pitching in tight situations where everyone is bearing down, as opposed to coming in on mop up duty. I'll do my best to re-visit this in a couple of months when we all have add'l stats to work with.
  2. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 27, 2014 -> 10:17 AM) Giancarlo Stanton had major contact issues all the way up, too. Sometimes they get it, sometimes they don't. Given their recent track record, I think it's reasonable to question the White Sox' ability to either develop these guys or correctly identify the ones that have a real shot. But, on the other hand, it's also probable that Davidson was the biggest package of talent that could be had for a reliever like Reed. I think it's a legitimate debate: should the White Sox shy away from poor contact prospects even when they represent the best available talent? Is the answer to just avoid them, or to continue to get better at developing them? I never saw any evidence that the Sox were shopping Reed prior to the Davidson deal. Fact is, AZ played Davidson extensively the end of 2013 season; from what I heard, they cooled on him, shopped him, and the rest is history.
  3. Noticed that there are a bunch of catchers throughout the system with pretty good offensive numbers, including the guy at Kanny (Omar Narvaez) who is up to .317 now. He's 22 with 5-6 years pro experience. Don't know if any of these catchers are prospects, since their names never show up on prospect lists. What say you, Northsider?
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2014 -> 06:59 PM) Ugh, the butchery represented in that post just hurts. It was a valid post until the last sentence. Combining the salaries of a bunch of relievers makes little sense, combining saves and blown saves a bit more.
  5. QUOTE (glangon @ May 26, 2014 -> 07:07 AM) My 1st attempt at a game thread. Chief Francona and his Tribe bring Josh Tomlin (3-1) to the mound to face the might of the Ventura's White Sox who bring Q (2-4) to the mound. The 1st pitch on Memorial Day is at 1:10pm Central Time and will be shown on CSN Chicago (or MLB TV for the out of towner like me) God bless the brave soldiers who risk their lives defending their country. Let's Go White Sox. Do you get MLB TV in Scotland?
  6. Someone recently posted elsewhere that Micah has been timed at 3.69 to first. Has anyone here ever seen a posted time for Billy Hamilton?
  7. QUOTE (LDF @ May 26, 2014 -> 07:09 AM) some posters corrected me and mention that with the salary cap for drafted players, player are slotted with the amount of what an agent or advisor can asked. I still believed the advisor can asked for the max and there by limiting the ability to sign the other drafted prospects. Rodon, Alex Jackson are 2 known prospects that have boras. Second the personal animosity that the sox and boras has for each, HAS to play into the equations. Didn't know that Jackson was a Boras Boy. Good luck to whomever drafts him.
  8. QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ May 25, 2014 -> 07:28 PM) Kevan Smith 3 for 4 with a double and a couple of RBIs, putting together a very solid season. In fact both he and Phegley have been been having very productive seasons. Smith looks like a guy who keeps improving. If Davidson had those numbers, everyone would be estatic; with Smith, he is "too old".
  9. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ May 26, 2014 -> 01:50 AM) IMO it'll take Atleast 2 more years before we can get excited about the farm. Gota let the guys develop and draft some more good players and sign a couple international prospects Same thing was posted a year or two ago. Fact is, they are approx 44 games under .500 collectively, and it's tough to get excited. From here, it does not look like a farm system on the rise. Just trying to be objective. The draft will help, but it will help others also.
  10. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 25, 2014 -> 03:04 PM) Are you actually judging the quality of a farm system by the number of minor league wins it generates? It's a start.
  11. Maybe this will create an opening for Ayala in Kanny.
  12. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 24, 2014 -> 06:16 PM) Because Rick Hahn is not an idiot Are you telling me that he wouldn't undo the Reed/Davidson trade, if he could?
  13. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ May 24, 2014 -> 02:54 PM) I thought Ventura got tossed earlier? Did not know RV got tossed earlier.
  14. QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Bad time to remind everyone that horrible umpiring likely cost the Sox a run in the 2nd? Ventura/Belasario cost that game. But speaking of the umps, they did squeeze Belasario in the 9th.
  15. Most Managers don't like to take out the closer in the middle of the 9th. They must think it will embarrass him. Hurt his pride. That's just the way the game has evolved. The current book on managing must say something like you gotta leave him in to finish, otherwise his physce will be damaged and it will hurt the team in future closing situations. Don't play for today's win, play for the big picture. When the Mgr. goes counter to this, like in Atlanta recently when they took Kimbrel out with game on the line, Kimbrel threw a hissy fit, as if to say the Mgr. can't do that. At least the Atlanta skipper had the balls to stand up to his star closer; Robin did not have the balls to remove Belasario. I'm exaggerating. of course, but not much.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ May 24, 2014 -> 12:47 PM) Very odd it's not Sierra playing I think Sierra has played himself off the team, just waiting for Abreu to come off the DL, then Sierra goes. Unless someone else gets hurt. Unless Semien gets sent down. Or Leury Garcia.
  17. It seems that with the collection of players in the Sox farm system that they would be able to find room for Sammy Ayala somewhere, just to see if he has a future in the game. Northsider, do you have a list of players held over at advanced spring training?
  18. QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 23, 2014 -> 11:12 PM) Hawks Hell Yes was classic. ESPN played Hawk's call on Baseball Tonight. "Yes, Yes, Hell Yes."
  19. Watching the KC feed on tonight's game, and the announcer talked about Casey Gillespie -- likely first rounder from Witchita State.
  20. QUOTE (Jake @ May 21, 2014 -> 01:35 AM) In his defense, he is walking a bunch Picked off twice last night..... Still on 4 man, however.
  21. Hawk was around for the Honel, Strum fiascos. Sox are 0 for 2 and overdue.
  22. Without looking at his splits, Downs has been very effective the last few weeks. His ERA will never get to be low with his awful start. It is now an irrelevant stat for him. That was a huge strikeout in 9th inning.
  23. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 19, 2014 -> 07:26 AM) It's draftnik actually. Draftnik is a term describing those who study professional sports leagues drafts, and cover the draft in the media. The term is most often used in reference to the NFL Draft and was coined in the mid-1980s after the draft was first televised by ESPN. -Wikipedia. What was the first ".......nik"? Beatnik, perhaps?
  24. Who cares? Today's announcers talk waaay too much. Most are a bunch of babbling brooks who like to hear themselves talk. Geez, they talk about anything. Reminds me of an old song that came out in the '50's, I believe: "You Talk Too Much". It's like if there is ever three seconds of silence, they think they are not doing their job. They act like the audience is stupid and can't get through the game without them. And you guys want more conversation?? Maybe a few more promos to listen to? My solution is to put the TV on mute and turn the stereo on. If something happens and I want the audio, I have a remote in both hands.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ May 18, 2014 -> 01:47 PM) Trayce 0-2 with 2K....hard to consider him a prospect now, as he's having a horrible season. Sox still have him # 6 rated prospect in their updated list.
