What should be the Sox focus in the offseason?
oldsox replied to harfman77's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Sox should figure out the market value for Danks. I can think of a couple of teams who think they can contend in 2012 with a solid lefty, and they would give up some very good position player prospects. Then, since DeAza and Viciedo have looked so good, we should see what kind of pitching prospects we can get for CQ. If someone in charge can figure out what to do with Dunn, we should be at least as good next year as this year and be a lot closer to being a solid team in 2013-14. Otherwise, we will be a 24 man roster team. -
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Sep 11, 2011 -> 09:25 PM) How? I thought he would have had to have been on the 25-man roster before Sept 1st to be eligible? No? If he was part of the organization on 8/31, he is eligible to join parent team for playoffs.

..................and still no K Smith for Great Falls.

Is he arbitration eligible for 2012?

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 01:55 PM) How do you figure they would've given up something significant for AJ? Yeah, he would've been an upgrade over what they currently have in place. But you weren't getting any impact player for a couple months of AJ at his salary. Because they were fighting for another Division title and had no catcher.
-
AJ is not the reason for the lousy year that the Sox had. Primary culprits are the two clowns in the middle of the batting order (Rios/Dunn) and the GM who got them. When it became obvious the Sox were not going anywhere, I was hoping for a minor overhaul, and we had a start with moving Jackson, Teahan and finally bringing up DeAza, Flowers, and Viciedo. With Giants missing their great catcher Posey, yet still contending, I was hopeful that we could make a deal with them for AJ. After what the Giants gave up for Beltran, we could have gotten something significant, or so I thought last July.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 07:52 AM) Zambrano in the AL would be Fausto Carmona bad. His stuff has deteriorated considerably. True, but he is a much better hitter than Rios..

Back in the mid 50's, Billy Pierce took a perfect game into the 9th inning at home vs the Washington Senators. He got the first two guys out routinely, then pinch hitter Ed Fitzgerald, a back up catcher, with two strikes, I believe, hit an unhittable pitch over the first baseman's head into short right field, barely fair. End of perfecto. Then Pierce struck out Albie Pearson on three pitches.

Matt Williams, third base coach of D-Backs, would be a good choice. He could also be the hitting coach. He wants a Mrg. gig.

Kevin Smith did not play last two games. Is he hurt?

Ryne Sandburg

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 4, 2011 -> 08:54 PM) If he were hired by Fla. the Sox wouldn't have to pay the 2012 portion of his contract. Fat chance.

Wilkins bypassed the usual stint at Low A Kanny. Went straight from GF in 2010 to W-S in 2011. I would not be surprised to see another leap in 2012. He'll be 23 this month. Too bad he is not slated for AFL.

9/2 - Sox @ DET; Danks vs. Ver-Zeus-Der

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 2, 2011 -> 12:56 PM) pretty sad that I'm shocked Dunn and Rios are riding pine. Verlander's gotta be urinated. -
They'll prob have to put Gac on the 40 man roster to keep him.
-
I wish we had included Thompson from Kanny.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 09:01 AM) Sort of missed the point. The AFL isn't a best-prospects list, for any organization, Sox or otherwise. So a "lack of prospects" has nothing to do with it. The Sox system is piss-poor right now, but no one thinks that Terry Doyle, Tyler Saladino, Brandon Short and Josh Phegley are the best prospects in the system. Hell only one of those might be in the Top 10 for the Sox. I think it is or should be a group of your best prospects who have at least one full year and preferably two years of pro ball up to AA. Obvious exceptions are guys with injuries and pitchers who have exceeded some mythical pitch count plateau. The Rockies just announced their AFL players, and they have several with really nintriguing offensive numbers in High A and AA. I just wish we had a few of those.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 06:44 AM) So anyone word on the progress of Leyson Septimo? There was a lot of talk about his great arm, but I haven't heard a peep about him since we got him playing. It looks like his ERA, K, and BB improved, but his baa took a dip. I am guessing they have got him hitting the zone more often which has him giving up a few more hits? Will be tough to keep him on 40 man roster.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2011 -> 06:47 AM) You have to understand, the AFL is used (at least by the Sox) for multiple purposes, such as: --Getting more work in for a prospect that may have missed time during the season --Showing off a prospect to scouts for future trade value --Pushing a prospect off the fence - guys who are borderline, want to know how they do against tougher competition, see if they are for real So you often do not get an A-list of prospects, from any team. ....or maybe it's just a lack of prospects.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 02:46 PM) MDGonzales Mark Gonzales C Josh Phegley, inf. Tyler Saladino, OF brandon Short and P terry doyle will rep White Sox in AFL. Not exactly an A List of prospects

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 08:29 AM) I've compared Ozzie to Ditka so many times. It's almost a perfect comparison. Does that mean I'm going to have to watch Ozzie on ESPN for the next 15 years
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Aug 30, 2011 -> 05:16 AM) Ozzie can be entertaining, but being funny doesn't win ball games. If the Sox get hot and make the playoffs, I wouldn't be surprised if Ozzie is back next year. If the Sox get hot and still finish a couple games out, there's a better chance he goes. But I'm not sure he's going anywhere, regardless of what happens this year. But if he is shown the door, whether the Sox finish strong or not, it would not be embarrassing to the Sox. Well, I take that back. It would be embarrassing that it took them this long to get rid of him. I wonder how important it is to Ozzie that he get paid for 2012 from Sox AND get his deal with Marlins?

Was Kevin Smith hurt when he arrived at GF? Kenyon Walker now firmly above the Mendoza line. And, a possible explanation for Tyler Williams is that, since he was cut by Ariz and picked up by Sox, he has responded to good coaching.

Please don't tell Kenny that both Viciedo and Flowers went deep
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 25, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) It has also paid off in a World Championship and another division title. You'd be hard pressed to not call the Kenny Williams era the most successful in the history of this franchise. Because of his bad trades and senseless FA signings? and watching our farm system become arguably the worst in MLB? Charlie Manson could have done as well.
